This study maintains that China’s system of economic planning tends to mitigate the trade-off between economic growth and equity that has been found to prevail in the early stages of development in most less developed countries. The analysis focuses on the Chinese leadership’s attempt to improve economic efficiency by decentralizing economic management without encouraging, as a consequence, increased economic inequality among different regions. By examining the budgetary and planning process, focusing in particular on the fiscal relations between the centre and the far-reaching degree of resource redistribution undertaken by the central government through its control of interprovincial and intersectoral resource transfers. Professor Lardy’s analysis highlights the essential features of Chinese economic growth and relates these to the experience of both developing and Soviet-type economies.

China has experienced over a quarter century of rapid economic growth, which has a phenomenal impact on the global economy. Entering into the 21st century implies that China has begun a new phase of economic and social development. Vast improvement in people's living standards, however, has been coupled with two critical problems: inequality and poverty. The key question is not that people should be pessimistic about China's future growth and prosperity, but that people should consider which direction that China will go. Is it going to become one of the most un-egalitarian countries like Brazil and Mexico, or one of the most dynamic and relatively egalitarian economies like South Korea and Taiwan. This book reviews the economic development history of contemporary China from 1949 up to today, paying special attention to the interface among growth, inequality and poverty reduction. A real China economic miracle should have two important features: high income growth and a fair distribution system so that povertycan be eradicated.

This book no longer need a review. It is so popular among the academics and the students for its lucid way of treating complex variables I used this book as my reference for complex variables for the graduate mathematical methods course. This book helped me a lot with lots of examples and interesting exercise problems. It is also very good for students who wants to have a fast glance at the concepts. Overall, I would strongly recommend this book to any student who wants to learn complex variables in the most simple way with all kinds of examles to solve problems and score high grades.
Great cheap text on complex variables for the mathematician.......2006-08-13
Complaints seem to abound in regard to how this Schaum's outline is too theoretical and has too few problems involving applications. You must remember that this particular outline was meant to complement an undergraduate mathematics course in complex variables, not an applied physics or engineering course using complex variables. Thus, the purpose of this book is to develop the calculus of functions of a complex variable.
This is one of those Schaum's outlines that has sufficient explanation, figures, and examples that it can double as a cheap textbook on the subject. However, remember that the emphasis is on theorems and proofs of theorems versus applications. However, there are some sections of the outline that are excellent at illustrating some applications of the subject matter. In particular, chapter 9, "Physical Applications of Conformal Mapping" contains applications from physics using those equations that are defined by a potential, including the electromagnetic field, the gravitational field, and, in fluid dynamics, potential flow, which is an approximation to fluid flow assuming constant density, zero viscosity, and irrotational flow. By choosing an appropriate mapping, the outline demonstrates clearly how one can transform the inconvenient geometry of one set of these equations into a much more convenient one. The equations are solved in this new "convenient" geometry, and then transformed back into the old one. One example of a fluid dynamic application of a conformal map that is detailed is the Joukowsky transform.
If you are not looking for a book to complement a mathematics course on complex variables and you are looking for something more applied, you might look at "Complex Variables: Introduction and Applications". That book has the first part dedicated to theory and the second part dedicated to applications at a reasonable price.
too theoretical.......2005-02-27
I bought this thinking it would help me understand complex variables, complex integration and differentiation. As another customer commented there are wayyyy to few solved concrete problems, all of the solved problems are proving some theorem. This is useless. I can look those proofs up elsewhere. What I expected was concrete solved problems, there are very very few of those. All in all I am rather dissapointed with this book. Not recommended unless you are looking for many proofs of just theorems.
Good mixture of examples and theory........2004-06-02
I like this book very much. First, you can go through solved examples or you can try to solve them yourself and compare your solution against the presented one. If you want to get deeper, there are theorems to be proved and again, proofs are shown or indicated, you will not be left alone. Then the book presents number of examples to be solved.

Great Supplemental/Review Material.......2005-04-06
For as cheap as it is, this is a great value. It reviews every concept in physical chemistry very well. Obviously it won't replace your textbook, but it will at least cover subjects that maybe your textbook omits. The outline was last updated in 1989, but, honestly, physical chemistry has not changed in at least the last twenty or thirty years. Conceptually, all of physical chemistry has remained the same, so I would not say that this book is obsolete.

The examples are from a different planet! The text is very general in the important concepts and too detailed in the obscure stuff; this is definintley not intended for someone new to PCHEM. Stick to you textbook, like Atkins, which probably has better explanations and problems.
GOOD, BUT OBSOLETE CONTENTS.......2003-03-02
The over-five hundred pages that make-up this "Schaum's Outline of Physical Chemistry" were dedicated to giving overview of every aspect of the subject. The book's presentations and analyses are easy-to-follow; and would be appreciated by any Physical Science undergrad.
I valued its exploits in the fields of: Thermodynamics, Equilibrium Properties, Chemical Kinetics, and Intermolecular Forces. Its information are concise; yet, detailed enough. There are both tutorials and worked examples in every chapter: hence, making it a fine revision tool.
However, bear in mind that the contents of this book are more or less obsolete. The fact that it has not been revised since 1988 is discouraging. In view of this, I am reluctant to recommend it!

This book is a fabulous supplement to any physical chemistry text. It even includes reviews on quantum and solid state. I found this book especially helpful as i am a physics major taking p.chem with little chemistry background.

This is one of the books that I pull out once or twice a year to review the principles of physical science. If you are like me, it is irritating to contemplate losing all of that hard-won knowledge from high school and college science courses. I especially like this volume, since it includes earth science and astronomy along with the basic chemistry and physics.

If you believe in creationism then read this book with caution. This book tries to brainwash you into thinking that evolution is based on solid foundation and creationism is quack. Buyer beware. I would not buy this book for someone under 18 years of age.

This book is self explanatory and easy to read. I use this book for my SC 102 class. I'm a senior non-science major and it is really a good book.

Nice edition, but it is really necessary?.......2004-04-16
For over thirty years, McGraw has been putting out various editions of this highly successful textbook. Now in its tenth iteration, McGraw has made an important extension. It added a CD (which was long overdue). Plus, the book gives access to an online resource called PowerWeb. Pretty snazzy! You can access whole bunches of material there which is simply not in the book.
Hopefully, this may help motivate some students to learn more effectively. But a disquieting counterargument has arisen in some quarters. Is a new edition really needed? Perhaps an earlier edition would suffice for most students. If so, this would let several buy second hand versions far more cheaply. But if the publisher goes to this edition, and it is made mandatory by a school, then it is far harder for students to find used versions. At least for a few years. And later? When those used editions start circulating, what if the publisher and school then go to a newer edition?
From the Viewpoint of a Freshman High School Student........1998-11-30
This title is a comprehensive look at many aspects of science. Its Study guide is very helpful in preparing for examinations. The book, however, has a complicated way of explaining material. This slight defect may be reduced with the help of the useful appendixes, and study guides.

A good story.......2007-08-28
It takes a little keeping up with at the start. Nearly three-fourths of a dynasty is followed in the first part of the book and then the latter half is the main story, covering only a couple of months. The progression of time is fairly well done. The characters really do come to life, each with a quirk or five. The interactions between them practically require diagrams. Lots of horses jumping and talk about fishing. More than anything, though, it is the syntax and style that really captures the uniquely Irish mood and impishness. Many of the descriptions force me to suppress laughter, but I read on anxiously, enjoying the momentum of the ride. I recently read that to mimic dialect, one should focus on the sentence structure and word choice, and not to purposefully misspell words. These authors are great at this. The better-known Irish R.M. stories use this to great effect. However, this novel was written after Martin's death. Those little misspelled words creep in a way that didn't happen in the R.M. While I do not doubt their partnership endured despite being in separate worlds, there is certainly a difference in the writing, albeit slight. The relationship between those in the house and those in the tower is interesting, as well. Overall, it is a very good story.
