This novel is definitely "Literature"--the book is rather abstract in concept. The story partially explores others erotic pleasures from art or from assorted grooming and cleansing rituals, and another part of it is a innocence versus good. There is relatively little plot, and the characters, except for one, are sketched in very lightly. The novel is technically erotic, but most of the book is not particularly lust-inducing. (Anthony Burgess, who reviewed this for the NYTimes, claims the change from Spanish to English is to blame.)

The main narrative is interspersed with tales inspired by paintings. Full-color prints of the paintings are included. Most of these mini-stories are erotic, except for the last. The last mini-story, about Mary, helps to stimulate thought about innocence, goodness, and the character of the young boy.

This was okay....pretty screwed up really, I read it for art history at uni. The art part of it was quite imaginative, with the ideas regarding the paintings. But the parts where Don Rigoberto performs his 'ablutions' may be interesting for a neurotic male but for a female (well me anyway) are tedious and anal. The little boy stuff was very strange, but all tied in to erotic art and stuff like that, pushing the boundaries. The best bit about it was that there were actually images of the paintings he was talking about in the book.

a real treat from Llosa.......2004-10-02

I have pretty much read everything from Llosa so I can definitely say that this is nothing close to his best still this is a nice little appetizer. By the way the beauty of the book is in it's brevity but on the other hand the charm of the book is in the details. Sounds like oxymoron?

The book is primarily around 3 characters - don Rigoberto, his son Alfonso and second wife Lucrecia. It goes into the details of the daily rituals of don Rigoberto and these details are just amazing. I will quote my friend - who once told me that this book is exactly like "Bloody Mary" - it has got the right amount of wrong vodka, the sex is like the tomato sauce, and the juvenile delinquency of Alfonso adds the tabasco while Lucrecia and her relationship with Alfonso is the rest. I have never found a better description of this book.
Llosa does an excellent job commenting on the situation with paintings - his description of the paintings is vivid. The print quality of the painting plates are excellent so the type setting. I also have to praise the translation which has done justice to the actual novel - hats off to Helen Lane

Well written but disturbing.......2004-06-22

I dont think of myself as someone that would use the word perversion. . at least not in a negative way. . but I never got comfortable about reading a book that describes in detail the sexual relationship between a stepmother and her very young step-son. Vargas Llosa writes beautifully, there is no doubt. But I still don't want to read a beautifully written passage about a 10 year old seducing a 40 year old.

Stresses All the Wrong Details.......2004-01-06

Once you get past the basic premise -- sex between a 40 year old woman and a very young boy, there's nothing especially shocking, or even interesting, about this short novel.

Despite its brevity, individual scenes are described in far too much detail -- I think we get about a page and a half devoted to someone brushing his teeth, and there are similar scenes in which we learn the intricacies of trimming nose hairs, ear hairs, etc.

And while I was mildly surprised by the twist ending, I wasn't touched by it emotionally or intellectually.

To sum up, I've seldom read a book that left me feeling so uninvolved on so many levels.

Too often Marx and Engels are reduced to philosophical caricatures in order to serve an author's own agenda. Richard Schmitt's book is noteworth for his careful analysis of the enduring issues and insights of Marx and Engels. I enjoyed this refreshing reminder of what all the fuss was about.

A minor disappointment.......2003-04-23

When I purchased this item, I believed that it would be a comprehensive overview of the study of history by a variety of Marxists. Instead, despite, the author's promise not to there is only discussion what Marx said. More distressingly, is an ommission of any discussion of contemporary Marxist historians influenced by the works of Gramsci (who only gets one sentence).

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get back to Marx and study history without the bias of Marxist, telling you the correct interpetation but not for those who wish to study the controveries imbedded in a term such as Historical Materialism.

Despite Gandhi's ironic wit, studying Western Civilization is still quite valuable, not least because it's now largely free of ethnocentric biases. This latest incarnation of Mckay's standard text is a sound tool for the task. Superb structure and organization aid in mastering the inevitable barrage of names, dates and other facts in a sweeping survey. There are also helpful cross-references, subsections, key terms, suggested readings and many striking illustrations. The numerous maps are especially useful, with plenty of data for a geography test. Reasoned judgements and substantial material on Islam, Judaism, women, peasants, heretics and other dissenters, ensure that this is no mere triumphalist tale of the rise of the West (apologies to William McNeill). Perhaps the best feature is the primary source section at each chapter's end. Along with frequent quotations in the text, this alerts students to the fundamental importance, and fascination, of original evidence in writing history. This also saves money for students, who shouldn't have to acquire a separate source collection. High prices, likely inflated by marginally useful supplements (e.g. CD-Roms), will deter some readers from buying the book. But they should not be put off by the writing, which is consistently clear and sometimes even pithy by survey-text standards. I will assign it again in future, because it works for students---and their opinion matters the most.
