    Book Description

Europe's Experimental Union challenges conventional writings on European intergration by situating the analysis of the EU in the context of changing patterns of political and econimic order. The authors conclude that the union is not evolving towards a federal superstate, but rather, is an arena of deep economic intergration governed by a prismatic polity characterised by innovation, experimentation, pragmatis, decentralisation and devolution. Although it may seem unsettled, this book reveals that in fact the experimental nature of the the EU enables it to respond to multiple agendas and Europe's diversity in a flexible manner.
". an immensely instructive and thought-provoking bool: strongly recommended reading for advanced students and specialists concerned with European politics, European integration, international relations, patterns of governance and the changing political economy of late twentieth century state and capitalism.' A must-read for 1Ls - 'Rich in anecdote and historical detail, it explains how laws - from the Constitution to decisions of local zoning boards - are made and administered by courts and administrative agencies. It also surveys the wide variety of law: antitrust, criminal justice, family law, torts, consumer protection, and commercial law, and explores the relationship between law and society.'

              Book Description

This book describes the fascinating chemistry of the many kinds of organic compounds of hypervalent iodine. Each chapter deals with a particular iodine compound or families of compounds which have been used as reagents in a plethora of useful transformations. These include assorted oxidation, such as with the precious Dess-Martin reagent as well as with a wide range of further reactions.
Prominent features of hypervalent iodine reagents derived from iodobenzene are: ready availability, operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and high efficiency. They are environmentally safe and can be recycled. New species may be easily prepared by introducing substituents in the benzene ring or changing the ligand attached to iodine. Their combination with other reagents broadens considerably their synthetic potential. Today, no synthetic chemist can afford to ignore the valuable hypervalentiodine reagents.

There's a reason "astronomically large" means "larger than the scale of ordinary life": normal scales of time and space for astronomers involve millions of years and anywhere from thousands to quadrillions of kilometers. Even for astronomers, University of Michigan professor Fred Adams and his former student Greg Laughlin think big--really, really big--and their planning is really, really long-term.

In The Five Ages of the Universe, Adams and Laughlin present their vision of the history of the universe, from the big bang on. They've had to come up with a new unit of measure to make this timescape intellectually tractable: the "cosmological decade." When the universe is 10 to the n years old, it is in the nth cosmological decade; we are now in the 10th, for instance. Each decade is thus 10 times as long as the one before.

All the stars will have stopped shining in the 14th cosmological decade, about 100 trillion years from now--which is a mind-bendingly long period of time by most standards. But Adams and Laughlin are just getting their speculations warmed up. They go on to fold, spindle, and mutilate your time sense as they discuss the Degenerate Era (out to decade 39), the Black Hole Era (to decade 100), and the possible creation of new universes in the Dark Era (after decade 101 or so). It's the most fascinating, mind-expanding trip inside eternity you can read. --Mary Ellen Curtin

                Book Description

As the twentieth century closed, Fred Adams and Greg Laughlin captured the attention of the world by identifying the five ages of time. In The Five Ages of the Universe, Adams and Laughlin demonstrate that we can now understand the complete life story of the cosmos from beginning to end. Adams and Laughlin have been hailed as the creators of the definitive long-term projection of the evolution of the universe. Their achievement is awesome in its scale and profound in its scientific breadth. But The Five Ages of the Universe is more than a handbook of the physical processes that guided our past and will shape our future; it is a truly epic story. Without leaving earth, here is a fantastic voyage to the physics of eternity. It is the only biography of the universe you will ever need.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Provocative Books Ever Written..........2005-07-23

This book is written for the layman and yet is ever so elegant.

While much of it is still speculation and the result of current astrophysical theory, it is worth reading because it will take you to a "what if" universe that will blow your mind.

It is a must read for anyone thinking about the big picture of the universe and what the future holds.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and clearly written biography of our Universe .......2004-08-03

I am simply a general reader who enjoys reading about cosmology so I have no way to judge whether the physics in this book is sound, but I suspect that it is. There are a great many divergent views on various aspects of what is discussed in this book. Since the boundaries of this science live in speculation and searching for evidence it isn't surprising that people as well respected as Stephen Hawking change their mind about Black Holes and so forth. This means that some things that were speculated in this book may have become generally accepted by now, or may have been made obsolete by new observations.

In any case, for those of us who want to gain some sense of the broad sweep of what are Universe is, what happened at its beginning and how it might end, this book is a fine read. The authors are able to present complex ideas clearly enough to make me believe I have some grasp of them (when I likely do not, but the sense of belief is comforting). The language is never condescending for the general reader and is not so long that the detail becomes overwhelming.

It is a fine book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the broad sweep of the existence of our Universe.

4 out of 5 stars One of the laymen.......2003-10-27

This book describes what I hope is the ultimate fate of the universe, that is, a gentle, long-lasting slip into beautiful quiescence. Alas, we are only babies in this universe, and should this prove to be true, all our offspring, and their offspring, and so on shall continue to be babies in this increasingly grandiose yet dimming universe. Then, maybe, intelligence shall cease and true existence, that is, non-existence, will prevail into the dark eternity...far out man:)

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating theories about universe.......2003-03-09

I thought this book was very fascinating! I enjoyed reading not only about theories regarding the past and present eras of the universe, but also about future eras. As the title implies, authors Fred Adams and Greg Laughlin divide the lifetime of the universe into five eras, and we're living in the second. It was fun to imagine what the night sky should look like trillions of years into the future, and many more. It was also fun to read about the time when it can be expected that only black holes will be left, and to go even beyond that. This is the only book I know that deals much with the question of the far future of the universe.
The authors also brings up questions which are probably beyond our ability to know the answer to(for example, whether our universe is one of many), but such an idea is interesting to think about. They do mention a few ideas that I'm skeptical of (for example, the idea of a "Darwinian view of universes"), though they also acknowledge that this remains speculative.
Although this is a scientific (not a theological) book, I will also mention that I am a believing Catholic. So I believe that God created all things, including the whole universe. However, I also believe that the scientific theories mentioned in this book are compatible with Catholic Church teaching, provided we understand that everything that happens is in the providence of God. Of course we should also understand that theories are not doctrines, and so theories could be subject to change upon future discoveries.
I highly recommend this book, at least for those who have some general knowledge of astronomy and physics.

4 out of 5 stars Four and the 1/2 Stars about The Five Ages of the Universe........2001-11-03

I love and collect books about cosmology since many years. This one was a great reading. Not only about the beginning and current state, but also about the fate of the Universe in the future.
Time will show how these computer simulated predictions are accurate. But it will not be you or me of course to observe it.
Book as for today is a bit outdated, does not take under consideration new discoveries like dark energy and acceleration of the Universe.
I have asked Professor Adams about it and he e-mailed: "the biggest change to our vision of the future comes in the Dark Era; positronium formation will be less likely, and a vacuum phase transition will be more likely if the Universe has a component of this dark energy. The basic picture however is still correct". What I really like about this book is that it gets even more interesting in the end. Explanation of quantum mechanical tunneling and possibilities of sudden cosmic scale phase transition is so vivid that I had a hard time to fall a sleep. My imagination was running wild ignited by description of space-time foam and multiverses. Summarizing: it was easy, quick and enjoyable learning about not so easy subjects. "References and further reading" list included in this book is worth to have a look as well.
Professor Adams is currently working on his new book.

                  Book Description

Herencia (meaning "inheritance" or "heritage") is the first anthology to bring together literature spanning the entire history of Hispanic writing in the United States, from the age of exploration to the present. The product of a ten-year project involving hundreds of scholars nationwide, Herencia is the most comprehensive literary collection available, covering over three centuries and including writers from all the major Hispanic ethnic communities as well as a broad sample of writing from diverse genres. Here is the voice of the conqueror and the conquered, the revolutionary and the reactionary, the native and the uprooted or landless. Of course, readers will find pieces by such leading writers as Piri Thomas, Luis Valdez, Isabel Allende, Oscar Hijuelos, and Reinaldo Arenas. But what truly distinguish this anthology are its historical depth and its rich, complex portrait of Hispanic literature in the United States. Beginning with Cabeza de Vaca's account of his explorations in the New World, the anthology includes a passage from La Florida, a narrative historical poem of 22,000 verses, written by Franciscan friar Alonso de Escobedo. It also features an attack on Mexican stereotypes in the nascent movie industry written by Nicasio Idar, editor of Laredo's La Cronica; and an essay about Coney Island written by revolutionary Jose Marti. Embracing Chicano, Nuyorican, Cuban American, and Latino writings, the voices of immigrants and the voices of exiles, Herencia makes a vital contribution to our understanding not only of Hispanic writing in the United States, but also of the great contribution Hispanics have made to the United States.

                  3 out of 5 stars Far less than it could-and should-have been........2002-04-29

Herencia : The Anthology of Hispanic Literature of the United States by Nicolas Kanellos (Editor), is a book that's been creating a lot of buzz here in San Antonio (where I live), a town that is one of the centers of "Hispanic" literature. The buzz has been overwhelmingly negative, the primary thrust of the discussions being that this book is a "political" book and a "sellout".

The book does have some serious problems. First of all, this is not an anthology of "Hispanic" authors per se--calling it an anthology of "Latino" authors would have been more accurate. You'd think the guru's at an institution as prestigious and knowledgeable as the Oxford University Press would understand that entities other than the Spanish colonized the southern Americas. If this was intended to be a collection of "Hispanic" literature, several included authors should have been excluded.

As it is, excluding authors didn't seem to be an issue. A list of major "Hispanic" authors whose work does not appear-or even get passing mention-here would fill a much larger collection than this. Such a list would include major literary award recipients such as Kathleen Acala, Ana Castillo and Sandra Cisneros, as well as other, extremely well known and thought of artists as Julia Alvarez, Jose Antonio Burciaga, Alam Luz Villanueva, Denise Chavez, Gary Soto, Angela de Hoyos, John Phillip Santos, Juan Philipe Herrera, Arturo Islas and Cecile Pineda, to literally just name a few.

The word around here is that this is a "political" book in the politics os publishing sense. Mr. Kanellos is apparently know quite well in the Latino writing community as a man who helps those he like and attacks those he does not-apparently quite a list based on the omissions from this text. That sounds like pettiness at first blush-but when one looks at the way this book is constructed, one has to wonder.

Even with all that, the book is an impressive collection of works.that cover a wide range of Latio heritage (the translation of the title) and writing styles.

In the end, this stands not as "the" anthology of the (rather arrogant) title, but "an" anthology of "Latino" writers that is seriously flawed, but nevertheless stands as an impressive collection all the same.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of Hispanic literature.......2002-02-06

A vast compilation of the struggles, strivings, and dreams of a people. The selections show a sharp eye for scholarship and passion is at work, one with a keen ear for the music of the language. Kudos to Dworkin y Mendez and the other editors for their labor of love and language.
