    Book Description

Nations of the Pacific region had, until recently, a reputation for prudent running of their economies with minimal fiscal imbalances and debt. This reputation has become tarnished of late thanks to some financial crises that have brought about real debt management problems for several economies in this area.

This book analyzes a selection of these economies paying specific attention to their fiscal policies and structures. The impressive contributions cover a range of countries seeking to provide evidence that can be made useful for future policy decisions.

A wide range of experts from across the globe have some together in this useful book. They have produced a work that will be recommended reading for students and academics involved in the area of international finance, money and banking and Asia Pacific Studies. The policy lessons that can be learned from this book will also need to be taken on board by policy-makers the world over.

      Book Description

In 1754 Eleanor Powers was hung for a murder committed during a botched robbery. She was the first woman condemned to die in Canada, but would not be the last. In Uncertain Justice, Beverley Boissery and Murray Greenwood portray a cast of women characters almost as often wronged by the law as they have wronged society. Starting with the Powers trial and continuing to the not-too-distant past, the authors expose the patriarchal values that lie at the core of criminal law, and the class and gender biases that permeate its procedures and applications. The writing style is similar to that of a popular mystery: "Harriet Henry lay dead. Horribly and indubitably. Her body sprawled against the bed, the head twisted at a grotesque angle. Foam engulfed the grinning mouth." Scholarly analysis combines with the narrative to make Uncertain Justice a fascinating and engaging read. There is a wealth of information about the emerging and evolving legal system and profession, the state of forensic science, the roles of juries, and the political turmoil and growing resistance to a purely class-based aristocratic form of government.

                              Book Description

Recent advances in immunology and molecular biology have resulted in new therapeutic approaches being generated and implemented in cancer clinics. The discovery of new antigens, mechanisms of antigen presentation, and interplay of cells involved in anti-tumor immunity have made the clinical control of some cancers more plausible than previously thought. An invaluable source for clinicians, researchers, and students, Tumor Immunology presents an introductory overview of the immunology of cancer including therapeutic approaches. Topics covered include the immune recognition of cancer-tumor antigens, humoral recognition of cancer, and the immunotherapy of cancer.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Nice book!.......2000-05-04

The content of the corresponding book is good enough and updated very nicely in the 2nd edition. But the solution manual gave me more surprise. Equilibrium Statistics, especially the renormalization group method, is a highly difficuly yet challenging topic. I highly appreciate such a solution manual, with which I do not need to waste too much time on a single problem.

                                  Book Description

Civil War buffs and scholars quickly recognize the dates of September 16-18, 1862 as the period marking the bloodiest battle of the entire campaign--Antietam. But until now, the ten days prior to that event have remained in relative obscurity. In Before Antietem, John Michael Priest offers the first book-length, tactical exploration of the Maryland campaign and the Battles of South Mountain, describing the decisive events leading up to the famous battle and elevating them from mere footnote status to a matter of military record. Chronicling Robert E. Lee's turnabout from defensive maneuvres to full scale Confederate invasion into Maryland, Priest demonstrates how this tactical change brought about a series of engagements near Sharpsburg, Maryland that came to be known as "The Battle of South Mountain" in which the Federal and Confederate forces struggled fiercely over Union territory. It was here that George B. McClellan, the new Northern commander, led his Army of the Potomac to its first victory over Lee in a furious action that produced one of the war's few successful bayonet charges. Written from the perspective of the front line combatants (and civilian observers), the book recounts the Confederate invasion and the Federal pursuit into Sharpsburg that set the stage for Antietam. From September 5-15, a total of twenty-five skirmishes and three pitched battles were fought. Priest provides graphic descriptions of the terrible conditions surrounding these events and so thoroughly enters into the common soldier's viewpoint that military history quickly gives way to gritty realism. He vividly shows that, had Robert E. Lee not been bested at the gaps along South Mountain, there would have been no Antietam. Lee's decision to make a stand along Antietam Creek was a point of pride--he had never been "whipped" before and would not return to Virginia defeated. That decision was a fateful one, since the sparring and fighting drove him into an untenable position that became his downfall. Priest's revealing narrative establishes that, at this stage of the Civil War, the Federal cavalry was better equipped and just as well trained as the Confederate cavalry thereby settling a point of debate among historians. Scholars and Civil War buffs alike will applaud the efforts of John Michael Priest in bringing us the means to view those devastating encounters from a true military perspective.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-05-24

John Priest is one of the nicer Civil War authors and it is a shame that he is having this "accuracy" problem. Having read and enjoyed the book, I have taken the time to investigate the extent of the "factual errors". I found it very hard to pin down the errors that reports indicate abound in this book. The Sgt. Bloss "problem" is covered in an extensive footnote. Except for the Amazon review, I have never had it mentioned as one of the book's errors. The one documented error all agree on is the story of an Iron Brigade skirmish with a reference to Nolan's book. It seems that this skirmish was never mentioned in the various editions of the Nolan book. If your passion for historical accuracy is such that editing or transcription can destroy a book, you should stop reading this review.

What we have is good solid coverage of an under reported battle. South Mountain is lost in the story of Harpers Ferry and Antietam. A book length treatment is welcome and unique. Priest focuses on the experiences of the rank and file as much as the generals, giving the reader a good micro and macro view of the battle. The maps are Priest's maps, better than no maps but not great maps. There are a large number of them, which helps keep the reader on the field and aware of what is going on. We are not dealing with one battle but a series of somewhat linked battles that slowly break through the AoNV's line and force a retreat.

Is this a great battle book? No, but it is an above average one and very readable. This could be the only book available on this battle and is needed to understand the Antietam Campaign. This is not a book that should be dismissed lightly and one I never regretted buying.

2 out of 5 stars Factual Error Worries Me.......2004-07-16

I would probably award this book 2.5 stars. There are no others that offer the kind of small scale detail that this book provides. For miniature wargamers, that alone may be worth the price of the book. The maps, though, are truly ugly and not very much help (which is a disappointment considering the maps in his Antietam book are, while ugly, better).

What really concerns me is his factual accuracy. His account of the Lost Order has the erroneous story of Sgt. Bloss seeing the packet and having Corporal Mitchell pick it up for him. This is wrong. Bloss made up this story later, trying to take credit for the Lost Order well after Mitchell had died. Historians don't lend any credence to the story, but here it is -- given as fact -- in Priest's book. This mistake, while sloppy, wouldn't worry me so much if I hadn't read reviews of some of his other books (particularly those on the Overland Campaign) that say he's made numerous factual errors there.

If you want small scale details, you can't find other books to match this one. Just don't use this as your only source, and keep Priest's track record of accuracy in mind.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up.......2002-12-06

Very worth while. Interesting, well written. Spend some time here.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......1999-12-05

I had heard a lot of good buzz about this book and Priest's fine writing style. I was let down, frankly. I found his prose fairly choppy throughout. And I think he focused on the micro at the expense of the bigger picture. Oh, and terrible, useless maps!

4 out of 5 stars A meticulous study of the little known prelude to Antietam........1998-07-15

Those of us who have enjoyed Priest's other works on Antietam and the Wilderness will find this book comparable.

Advantages: meticulous, hour-by-hour study from a soldier's eye view--- once again, thoroughly researched bringing to light many unpublished materials from diaries, letters, etc. This book differs from others in that it covers a number of little-known cavalry skirmishes that preceeded the battles on South Mountain. Also has some very interesting accounts of marches through Maryland towns and gives a civilians' perspective.

Weaknesses: detailed maps once again are in Priest's hand-drawn style. The events described in the text can be hard to follow because the maps are dominated by terrain features, while military units and road names can be difficult to see. The book also ends much too abruptly-- there is no summary chapter that gives an overview of the events and personalities described in the book.

This said, the book is therefore NOT recommended fo! ! r readers who are new to the subjects at hand. On the other hand, dedicated students of the Civil War and those interested in studying military tactics will find it to be an outstanding contribution to the field.

There are so many ideas and thoughts packed into each chapter of this book, that digesting any more than a paragraph at a time can be too much. Every word contributes to the "wholeness" of the book. It is very well written. Part of the joy of reading this book is having a tablet nearby to record the reader's own contemplations and aspirations for further study and research.

Anna Lemkow's premise is interesting though not new--that science and religion are moving toward common ground. Both ways of understanding the Universe, she claims, may have far more in common than currently understood. In light of the fantastic discoveries and thought experimentrs in the field of quantum physics, notably about the "interconnectedness" of matter and energy, Lemkow poses an interesting scientific-theosophic premise--namely, that the ancient Law of Karma, along with rebirth, and perhaps the so-called Akashik collective memory bank of consciousness, might well fit into the quantum physical reality of our universe. Perhaps the ancients may have been on to something but without the benefit of today's sophisticated scientific tools? Regardless, the book has its weaknesses. Lemkow attempts to cover too much philosophical and metaphysical ground in too few pages and her approach is biased from her metaphysical/theosophical background. She berates Newtonian science as blind "scientism" (the religion of science)yet makes no similar criticism of blind mysticism (the science of religion). But overall, I liked the book. It is thought-provoking and gently weaves a theosophical viewpoint throughout. I don't agree with all the author's ideas, but then who could? Still, for the scientist or the mystic in me, it was a stimulating read. The book also serves as a roadmap (including interesting sidebar excerpts from other related works)in which to begin a personal exploration of the mysterious confluence of ancient meta physics and modern quantum physics
