Book Description
Amino Acids are not only the essential constituents of all living organisms, they also provide vital clues about life in the past. This book of contributed papers updates the science of amino acid geochemistry and replaces a classic but now outdated work, The Biogeochemistry of Amino Acids (out of print). The new book will have a wider focus than its predecessor, covering preservation of ancient proteins and amino acids, diagenesis of proteins and amino acids through geologic time and on short time scales (relevant to the preservation of museum materials), stable isotope geochemistry of proteins and amino acids, amino acid racemization, the origin of life, the stability of amino acids at hgh temperatures and pressures, and extraterrestrial amino acids. The primary audience for this book will be academics and graduate students in geochemistry, organic chemistry, archaeology, geochronology, and stratigraphy, although it will also be of interest to workers in forensic science.

Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction
ASIN: 0198609434 |
Book Description
During the 20th century, scientists discovered what the Universe is made of; as the 21st century begins, they are preparing experiments to find out how it came to be like this. This great adventure, which will involve a metaphorical journey back in time to within a billionth of a second of the Big Bang, is the latest stage in the quest to understand the nature of the matter that makes our Universe and the forces that govern it. The Particle Odyssey takes the reader on a spectacularly illustrated journey to the heart of matter. In clear, non-technical language the authors describe the key experiments and fundamental discoveries which have led to our current understanding of the origins and nature of the material universe. In this fascinating book, you will find individual 'portraits' of all the major subatomic particles, from the electron to the top quark. The authors describe the history of experimental particle physics: its origins in the discovery of X-rays in 1895; the dissection of the atom by Rutherford and others; the unexpected revelations of the cosmic rays; the explosion of new particles in the 1950s and 60s; the discovery of quarks and the rise of the 'standard model' in the last part of the 20th century. And they also look at the great challenges that face physicists today--where did antimatter go? what is dark matter? can there be a theory of everything?--and the experiments they are devising to explore them. The Particle Odyssey brings together and presents with style over 100 of the best images of particle 'events': mysterious, abstract, beautiful pictures of the tracks of subatomic particles as they speed, curve, dance, or explode through cloud and bubble chambers, stacks of photographic emulsion, and the giant multi-element detectors of modern experiments. Here are spiralling electrons, the tell-tale 'vees' of strange particles, matter and antimatter born from raw energy, energetic jets of particles spraying out from the decay points of quarks and gluons. A further 250 pictures, many taken specially for this book, illustrate the laboratories, experiments, and personalities of over a century of particle physics. This superb book is a testament to the work of 'big' science and one of the great detective stories of our age.
Customer Reviews:
A splendid account of a marvellous scientific 'journey'.......2007-06-10
The dictionary definition of `odyssey' is a `long adventurous journey. This single word aptly describes the immense effort that went into the quest for a deeper understanding of the `workings' of nature and what makes up the range of particles that define our universe.
This book competently describes that journey, outlining the `voyage' into the heart of matter, not only into the atom to study the protons, neutrons and electrons that make up what were once thought to be the ultimate `building blocks' of nature, but then going deeper into the `world' of quarks, which we now know are much more fundamental. These, together with leptons (which include electrons) make up all the particles found in nature.
These particles of ordinary matter, i.e. protons, neutrons and electrons are only part of the story. There are myriads of short lived particles that are seen in mesons or generated in particle colliders such as the super proton synchroton at CERN in Switzerland. To make sense of it all, in the form of the Standard Model, is an achievement beyond compare. The Particle Odyssey describes this achievement in an easy free flowing style, and with beautiful, and magnificently descriptive photographs and illustrations.
The work of delving into, and deciphering the inner workings of nature is a tribute to human ingenuity and inventiveness. If a person would like to get to know the people involved, the machines they used, the results they found, and the conclusions they drew, during this gargantuan task, then look no further than this book.
Unique Introduction to Particle Physics - Excellent Photographs and Particle Track Diagrams.......2006-07-27
The Particle Odyssey (2002) by Oxford University Press has few, if any peers: an oversized book (a little under 12 by 9 inches) suitable for display on a coffee table, filled with fascinating photos, and yet one that will appeal not only to the enthusiastic layman but even to undergraduate physics majors.
The Particle Odyssey is an excellent introductory overview of particle physics from the unexpected discoveries in the 1890s of electrons, x-rays, and radioactivity to the meticulously planned, large scale experiments in the mid-1980s that detected the W and Z particles (thereby confirming the Standard Model). Furthermore, the three authors - Frank Close, Michael Marten, and Christine Sutton - offer a lucid, intriguing overview of major challenges now facing particle physicists as they continue to unravel the fine structure of matter, and as they join forces with cosmologists to explore the moment of creation.
Even numbered chapters generally focus on the researchers and their massive machines. Odd numbered chapters describe the subatomic particles. Surprisingly, this unusual even-odd arrangement works quite well.
The Particle Odyssey, despite its abundant photos and diagrams, does require careful reading. The reader encounters neutrinos, muons, pions (pi-zero, pi-plus, pi-minus), kaons (K-zero, K-plus, K-minus), J/PSI, D (D-zero, D-plus), upsilon, lambda, sigma (sigma-zero, sigma-plus, sigma-minus), xi (xi-minus, xi-zero), omega minus, and charmed lambda. And don't forget, there is an antiparticle for every particle. There are also various resonance states for many particles.
The three authors (Close, Marten, and Sutton) published an earlier edition, titled The Particle Explosion, in 1987. This new edition, The Particle Odyssey (2002), has two major advantages: one, the material has been updated to cover the years 1987-2002 and two, the graphics are even better.
Recommendation: For a more technical look at the standard model, Deep Down Things (John Hopkins Press, 2004) by Bruce A. Schumm is quite good.
Art and Science in one binding.......2006-02-02
Rarely does a scientific book achieve the successful balance of well-written content and lavish, relevant illustration. The Particle Odessey sets a new standard for popular scientific books. The historical overview of particle physics tell the stories with tantilizing detail without distraction. The photos generously embellish the storyline and in many cases, are astonishing to say the least. This book deserves prominent display on your bookshelf and would be a great gift to the science buff looking for a great read. One of the best books in popular science available...
I wish this was around when I was a kid.......2005-02-10
I've always been fascinated with the large and small extremes of physics and while on the cosmological scale there's a surplus of visually enchanting material there hasn't been as much when it comes to physics on the particle level. This book fills that demand.
Tracking the advances made in particle physics over the last century, the book includes beatiful images illustrating what the scientists of the time saw and the equipment they used. All of this is clearly and simply explained. The difficulty level of the book increases as it progresses through each new discovery which is to be expected as the underlying physics and detection methods became more complex as well. Still, to someone with an interest in science and will to learn this is a great introduction to a mysterious world.
Beautiful and Informative.......2004-08-14
Can you imagine a coffee table picture book on particle physics?
That's what this is, and it's beautiful.
Particle physics began in the 1890's, when the early experiments of Thomson discovered the electron. Things moved slowly, the proton during the teens's. The newtron and several other particles in the 1930's. And that's basically where physics was when I got my physics degree more years ago than I like to remember.
Then beginning in the late 1960's the world of particle physics exploded. There are more than three dozen known particles. New theories about the formation of the universe have come about. What happened at the big bang, what particles existed in the first few nanoseconds? The development of testing machines undreamed of not so many years ago have begun to answer some of these questions.
The title of this book is well chosen. It has been an odyssey. To the outsider, not working in particle physics, it has been mysterious. Newly discovered particles with names like quark, newly discovered attributes like charm, color, and strange have made it impossible to keep abreast of the developments.
Here in one easy to read, beautifully illustrated and rather short book is the whole story laid out in a way that conveys just what you want to know.

Book Description
The years 2003-2006 mark the bicentennial of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's famous transcontinental journey between the Missouri and the Columbia River systems. They never did find the fabled Northwest Passage, but over twenty-eight months, the Corps of Discovery traveled more than eight thousand miles through eleven future states, named scores of places and rivers, met with many Native American tribes, and wrote the first descriptions of heretofore unknown plants and animals. By the end of their trip, Lewis and Clark had navigated and named two thirds of the American continent. They may have had undaunted courage, but the sheer volume of information related to their expedition can be more than a little daunting to the armchair historian. Written by two highly regarded Lewis and Clark experts, this book contains over five hundred lively and fascinating entries on everything from the members of the expedition and the places they went to the weapons and tools, trade goods, and medicines they carried, along with the food and amusements that sustained them. Highly readable and informative, it's the perfect introduction for the Lewis and Clark novice, and the comprehensive guide no buff will want to be without.
Customer Reviews:
A Companion Book it Is : A Need for All L & C Books .......2005-01-24
A wonderful reference book of terms, food items, boats, geographic locations, tribes, specific Indians, games, politicians and of course the entire cast of explorers down to Seaman the Newfoundland. Biographies can be several pages long and they cover not only an individual's role but what is known of the individual after the journey. Particularly helpful are the definitions in detail and descriptions of the materials utilied on the journey. An example are descriptions of the small flat bottomed boats called a Pirogue, a cake like food made from grease that was an easy to retrieve as a traveling food called Pemmican and a "drink composed of equal parts water and rum used for medically or for celebration" called grog. The definitions, descriptions of geographic locations and biographies are in satisfying detail almost like small books within a book. A book not only handy for sitting near your reading chair for any Lewis and Clark book but for any reading of early American historty.
a must have book for lewis and clark afficianados.......2003-11-03
Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs and Clay Jenkinson have joined forces to produce the definitive text for Lewis and Clark readers to keep in one hand while they read through the many books available on the epic expedition. They cover numerous personalities involved, and the many other aspects of the journey with encyclopedic thoroughness, resulting in the reader coming away, not just with a superficial knowledge of any topic, but a comprehensive understanding of the many facets involved in the greatest adventure in American exploration. There is something for everyone in this book. It makes great reading on its own, or as a reference book. The reader will gain much appreciation of Lewis and Clark, and a depth of knowledge previously only available to those with sufficient time to dig into the journals and sift through the dirt and pull out the gold nuggets...The authors have done the work of pulling out the gold, thus giving the reader the opportunity to enjoy their studies of the Corps of Discovery to a greater extent and not have to spend the effort of "mining" themselves.
Great for novices and aficionados alike.......2003-09-07
As we celebrate the bicentennial, the world of Lewis and Clark books grows by leaps and bounds. There are detailed studies of the flora and fauna, the weapons, the medical aspects, the views of various Indian tribes on the interactions with the Corps of Discovery. You can find cookbooks detailing what they ate, books about what they wore, stories of Seaman (Lewis' dog), and biographies of all involved.
So, what is the average person with a small amount of budding interest to do? Even scholars and historians who "do" Lewis and Clark have a hard time keeping up with all of it, and most people don't want to invest endless money in accumulating a personal Lewis and Clark library.
Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs and Clay Straus Jenkinson have come up with a perfect solution to this dilemma. "The Lewis and Clark Companion - An Encyclopedic Guide to the Voyage of Discovery" is a wonderful reference book on many aspects of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Arranged in alphabetical order, from "air gun" to "York," each article provides just the right amount of information needed to understand each area. Each entry is written in a straightforward style, giving quotes from the journals of the Expedition where they would be enlightening. There is also an extensive bibliography, if you find yourself wanting to know more about any aspect.
Tubbs is a Montana historian and serves on the Lewis and Clark National Trail Interpretive Center?s Foundation Board and is the daughter of the late Stephen Ambrose. She has spent much of her life traveling the Trail. Jenkinson is a well-respected Jefferson and Lewis and Clark historian, and author of several books, including "The Character of Meriwether Lewis," and "Thomas Jefferson, Man of Light." He has traveled the Trail extensively and also does Chautauqua performances around the country as both Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis. They bring vast knowledge and lively and interesting writing style to this project.
It is the perfect reference work for Lewis and Clark aficionados, as well as those who are just beginning their journey of enchantment with this epic adventure.

Lewis & Clark Encyclopedia Makes for Fascinating Reading!.......2004-01-19
This book starts out with a well-written introduction that provides an overview of the expedition, followed by a chronology of events leading up to, during and after the journey. The introduction and chronology provide useful context for the hundreds of entries that follow. The entries range from a couple of paragraphs to a couple of pages. They provide fascinating details on such subjects as the Native American tribes encountered during the expedition, sexual encounters by expedition members during the journey, supplies and equipment brought along during the journey, Clark's slave York (including his life after the expedition) and Lewis' dog Seaman. The book makes for easy browsing, as there are numerous cross-references that can bring you to related subjects, as well as recommended reading listed at the end of each entry. All in all, it's an enjoyable and highly recommended read.

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

Book Description
This clear and concise survey charts the momentous change, the shift from ancient and medieval science to the beginnings of modern science, that has come to be called the Scientific Revolution.
Starting with traditions of the ancient Greeks and the Christianizing of pagan philosophy during the middle ages, later chapters go on to show how these ancient and medieval traditions were either overhauled or overthrown by early moderm natural philosophers. Aristotelian cosmology was replaced by a new astronomy and physics, and animal physiology and medicine were put on new foundations. New scientific methodologies were proposed and scientific societies were organized to harness the power of science for the good of the state. Professor Jacob provides a masterful summary of the most recent scholarship surrounding these developments in language accessible to the nonscientist.
But this narrative does not stop at an account of the events themselves--it sets them in a broader cultural context. The impact on science of the invention of the printing press is discussed as is the contribution of Renaissance humanism, Neoplatonism and magic. Even more importantly, the dynamic relations between religion and science are treated in detail and the question addressed of just how the crisis of authority in science reflected the crisis of authority in society.

Could easily pass for a freshman term paper.......2007-08-13
"The Copernican system did have at least two major advantages over the Ptolemaic system. First, the diurnal rotation of the earth explained the apparent daily motion of the stars and planets. Second, the apparent retrograde motion of the planets in their course around the sun---the way they sometimes reverse direction as seen against the background of stars---could now be accounted for." (pp. 28-29). This is just ridiculous. Explaining the motion of the planets, including retrograde motion, is what the Ptolemaic system is all about. Of course the Copernican system had no "major advantages" by explaining what had already been successfully explained well over a thousand years before. "These advantages, however, could scarcely be said to outweigh the objections one could raise ... There was ... no observed parallax of the fixed stars (daily or seasonal change of their position relative to the earth)" (p. 30). Surely the absence of daily parallax was not a relevant objection to the Copernican system. Since no parallax effect had been observed by travelling the earth, none could reasonably be expected as a result of the earth's rotation. On Galileo's observations with telescopes we read that he "published his findings in Sidereus Nuncius ... written in the Italian vernacular for all to read" (p. 45). Apparently, Jacob does not find it odd that Galileo chose a resoundingly Latin title for this work supposedly written in "the Italian vernacular". On Newton: "Before ... inertial motion could make sense ... something else was needed, namely, a universe in which a finite quantity of matter could be seen as moving through infinite, absolute space ... Descartes had denied the existence of such a space, but Gassendi and More had asserted it, and so Newton borrowed just the world-picture he needed from them, who, in turn, had taken it from the ancient Stoics." (p. 126). Of course, in the Ptolemaic system it is natural to assume that the universe is finite, while in the Newtonian system it is natural to assume that the universe is infinite, and in neither system is it a very central issue. Why not leave it at that instead of claiming pompously that Newton made his discoveries "within the framework of a neo-Stoic cosmos" (p. 127) just because a couple of Greek guys once happened to suggest that space might be infinite?
Clarity and Insight.......2003-06-11
The "Scientific Revolution" is a fascinating but complex and confusing topic. James Jacob in a simple, clear style "connects the dots" from Greek to near modern science. One caution: if you start highlighting important points the pages become nearly covered in flourescent yellow.
The best general book on the subject now in print........1999-05-15
As editor of the series in which the book appears I can say that it is a superb, general account and very accessible to undergraduates.
