5 out of 5 stars Essential to a Proper Understanding of Federalism.......2004-03-16

This book is an excellent mini-treatise on constitutional federalism, written by one of the finest federalism scholars in the legal academy. It discusses federalism's main themes and issues, and does so in a clear, cogent, and concise manner.

All too often, laymen and lawyers alike wrongly refer to federalism as a synonym for "states' rights." Some think it simply a tool in the "conservative" constitutional scholar's arsenal. This reviewer is an attorney who was once a student of Professor David Engdahl, and I can assure you that neither he nor his scholarship supports either of those erroneous notions. Those who have respect for complexity and nuance will have much to appreciate here.

Nonetheless, Engdahl rejects the notion of "process federalism," a dubious notion that really isn't federalism at all. He provides a clear overview of the concept of enumerated powers, discussing what is actually meant by the word "powers" in this sense, and also how those powers extend in legislation. His discussion of the Necessary and Proper Clause is as sophisticated as any in the legal academy. Likewise, his understanding of the Commerce Clause is much more logical and textually supportable than those exhibited by any of the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. Engdahl is also an expert on interstate compacts and federal borrowing and spending powers, giving readers of this work with some impressive scholarship in these areas. He also provides a much better approach to the commandeering immunity concept, as grounded in the Necessary and Proper Clause (rather than the 10th Amendment), and rightly identifies the Ex Parte Young doctrine (a part of 11th Amendment jurisprudence) as a "silly fiction."

As noted, this book is written in the form of a small treatise, so it is not something a layperson would pick up and as easily understand. Furthermore, this edition was printed in 1987, and there have been many developments since that time, largely in the guise of the "New Federalism" spawned by U.S. v. Lopez (1995) and recent jurisprudence in the area of state sovereign immunity. (This reviewer recommends Dr. Michael Greve's "Real Federalism" for a discussion of more recent federalism jurisprudence.) None of the more recent developments detract from what is contained in this book, however. This small treatise provides the law students and legal scholars with clear and well-reasoned analysis of the principles of federalism and Supreme Court jurisprudence in that area. It is highly recommended.

        Book Description

Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Programme (TSBF) TSBF was established in 1984 under the patronage of the Man and Biosphere programme of Unesco and the Decade of the Tropics initiative of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The objective of the programme is to develop appropriate and innovative approaches for sustaining tropical soil fertility through the management of biological processes and organic resources. To achieve this objective, TSBF aspires to: TSBF is a voluntary participatory international research programme whose members are committed to the concept that the fertility of tropical soils is controlled by biological processes and can be managed by the manipulation of these processes. Research is conducted at both the ecosystem level and the process level on the basis of two principles: that the capacity to manage soil fertility depends on a mechanistic understanding of the biological processes regulating nutrient flux, organic matter dynamics and soil physical structure maintenance, and that successful management for sustainable soil fertility must be implemented at the ecosystem level by integrating soil biological processes with those of human decision making in relation to all components of the ecosystem.

          Book Description

Charles Darwin's correspondence provides a unique window on Darwin's working methods, the atmosphere of intellectual revolution of his time, and his doubts, anxieties, and false starts that are now little known. This volume is the most comprehensive catalog to date of all presently known letters between Charles Darwin and his friends and associates. The editors of Darwin's Correspondence give information on the source and location of each letter, as well as a brief summary of the content of each. First published in 1985 (by Garland Publishing Company), the Calendar has been thoroughly updated to include recently discovered material, corrected dates, and reinterpretations of known letters. These amendments and additions--1500 in number--are all carefully listed in a new supplement. An essential reference book for all scholars of Darwin, this Calendar will also form a vital companion to The Correspondence of Charles Darwin, a multi-volume work currently in progress, eight volumes of which have already been published by Cambridge University Press.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook.......2007-03-19

This excellent textbook presents the basic concepts of Nanotechnology and Nanophysics in a well structured, solid manner, without leaving any aspects unattached. It is updated, with references to recently published work in top rated journals. The main advantage of the book is the wide spectrum of the issues covered, ranging from biology to quantum computing, allowing future applications to be tackled by the students easier.

4 out of 5 stars fundamental approach to the field.......2005-01-03

Wolf explains from the vantage of a physicist what exactly is nanophysics, and what the engineering implications might be. He describes how the size of atoms, at 0.1 nanometers or so, sets a natural lower limit, and how the scale of nanometers lets us see and use quantum phenomena for designing new materials.

A solid background in quantum mechanics would not be remiss, before trying this book. Wolf offers a bottoms-up approach to understanding the various branches of nanotech research, which is currently burgeoning.

4 out of 5 stars these Greek romances strongly influenced the modern novel.......2001-11-24

This 800 page book contains all the extant Greek novels, or romances, that have made it to us out of antiquity. These romances are mostly in the line of boy meets girl, suffer shipwreck, are eventually reunited and discover they're rich. Like modern romances! Other of the romances are more historical, like the one about Alexander the Great. But great this particular romance is not. It's rather boring. My favorite in the book is Chariton, Chaereas and Callirhoe. Not exactly world famous these days. But of surprising invention and delight. More famous names are Heliodorus, An Ethiopean Story. Or Longus, Daphne and Chloe. Or Lucan, A True Story. If you're interested in expanding your idea of the novel, this would be a great place to spend a few weeks.

4 out of 5 stars Little known novels that everyone should know.......2001-01-29

This was the required text for a Classical Novel course I took, and at first I felt as if I was going to be disappointed by the novels it contained because to me it seemed as if they were all romances with little substance, kind of like the modern pulp fiction novels that you buy at your local drugstore.

However, after reading the first novel in the anthology, Chaereas and Callirhoe, I was hooked. These ancient novels are wonderful works of literature, written in a readable style that will grip anyone who reads them. I think also, that there is no better way to get in touch with Hellenistic history than to read a contemporary source.

4 out of 5 stars The Remnants of a Genre.......2000-04-26

Prose fiction is the segment of Greek literature that has left the faintest impression on later ages, as is demonstrated by the fact that virtually all of its remnants fit within this thick but not unwieldy volume. The contents include nine complete tales, most of which we would call novellas, plus epitomes or fragments of ten more. None of them is famous today, though Lucian's "True Romance" is often cited as a precursor to science fiction and Heliodoros' "Ethiopian Story" was widely read through the 18th century.

The core of the book consists of five "novels" - all from the 2nd century A.D., give or take a hundred or so years - that share enough conventions to be labeled a "genre". Their plots, in broadest outline, are identical: Boy and girl meet, fall in love, are married or about to be married, then are snatched apart by misfortune, faced with escalating threats to life and chastity, and finally reunited with virtue intact (hers anyway - his may wind up a bit tattered).

Within this pattern, there is much variation. "An Ephesian Tale" is sheer melodrama, "Chaereas and Callirhoe" a loosely historical romance, "An Ethiopian Story" a skillful narrative that opens with a trompe l'oeil scene that would do credit to a contemporary novelist. Perhaps the most interesting to the modern reader is "Daphnis and Chloe", where the perils to the lovers are more psychological than physical and the story traces their love affair from the first stirrings of adolescent attraction through long-delayed consummation.

Also present are works in other genres: a bawdy comedy ("The Ass", wrongly attributed in the Middle Ages to Lucian), a Munchausen-like travelogue (the authentic Lucian's "True Romance") and the faux historical "Alexander Romance", which shaped the later image of Alexander the Great as much as or more than did genuine history.

The translations, all but one specially prepared for this volume, are readable and generally lively. Only one of translators (burdened with the rather hopeless "Leucippe and Clitophon", in which he labors to uncover deeply hidden virtues) feels compelled to preface his effort with a discourse on literary theory.

The narratives gathered here are little-traveled paths in the terrain of classical literature and the reader may stumble now and then among the brambles, but the sights along the way are not without interest and charm.

4 out of 5 stars you will like it for a while probably.......2000-04-18

This is a huge book of romantic stories of the ancient world in which the young hero and heroine are beautiful and in love. Either they are separated by being stolen by pirates, or thought to be dead (a la Romeo and Juliet) or some such...and after much ado they are reunited. In my college class we are observing the role of the supernatural/divine in the various works,as a reflection of the kaliedoscopic religion of those times and places of the authors.

                  Book Description

In 1997, amid much fanfare, Leo Corry announced to the world that he had uncovered proof that Albert Einstein arrived at the generally covariant field equations of gravitation, before David Hilbert. Leo Corry joined with Juergen Renn and John Stachel and published an article in the journal "Science" arguing against Hilbert's priority. Their claims were largely based on a set of printer's proofs of David Hilbert's 20 November 1915 Goettingen lecture, which Corry had uncovered. However, in this 1997 article, "Belated Decision in the Hilbert-Einstein Priority Dispute," Corry, Renn and Stachel failed to disclose the fact that these printer's proofs were mutilated, and are missing a critical part. Full disclosure of the facts reveals that even in their mutilated state, these proofs prove that Hilbert had a generally covariant theory of gravitation before Einstein, and that Einstein plagiarized these equations from Hilbert. The author of "Albert Einstein: The Incorrigible Plagiarist" focuses in on the general theory of relativity and discredits the baseless historical revisionism of Leo Corry, Juergen Renn and John Stachel. The direct comparison of primary source material demonstrates that Albert Einstein did not originate the theory of relativity. Formal mathematical proofs explain how Einstein was forced to fudge his equations in order to derive the results Paul Gerber and Johann Georg von Soldner had published long before him. Einstein did not yet have the benefit of plagiarizing David Hilbert's generally covariant field equations of gravitation and was operating under an erroneous assumption. An extensive history of the principle of equivalence proves that Einstein plagiarized this idea. The book reprints the relevant papers by Einstein, Soldner, Gerber, and Hilbert, as well as the remainder of David Hilbert's mutilated printer's proofs of his article "The Foundations of Physics". While the book presents the mathematical proofs needed to justify its claims, the non-mathematical reader will find it rich in prose and will be able to follow the arguments and the history presented.

Many people may have been misled by the tactless and prejudiced account of the history of the Hilbert-Einstein equations of gravity published in 1997 by Leo Corry (Cohn Institute, University of Tel-Aviv) and John Stachel (Director of the Center of Einstein Studies, Boston). The "objectivity" of that account is well demonstrated by the fact that Corry and Stachel "forgot" to mention that the set of galley proofs of the fundamental Hilbert's paper that they analyzed was incomplete and was missing a critical part. The wonderful book by Bjerknes is a perfect remedy to Corry and Stachel's "discovery" and their attempt to further cultivate the cult of personality of Einstein at the expense of Hilbert. The book is thoroughly and meticulously documented and leaves only one way to counter it: by silencing it or by labeling the author as Einstein-hater (or worse) and changing the subject. Especially valuable is the section reproducing the original publications, including the (incomplete) galley proofs of the Hilbert's paper. If after having read this book someone still thinks that Corry and Stachel understand physics well enough to write about the history of general relativity then I would recommend the paper by A. A. Logunov et al., "How were the Hilbert-Einstein equations discovered?" Physics-Uspekhi, vol. 47, pp. 607-621 (2004) (in English).

The type of literature surrounding the investiture contest has a tendency to be a but dull and longwinded. This book breaks that tradition with a style that had people in my class thinking they new all about the conflict by just reading the introduction...it's that engaging.

If you are a student of chemical engineering and you need to study process control, this is the best book to initiate. After you can look for more specialazed books. It's excellent for general view.

5 out of 5 stars A clear, concise, authoritative book on this subject........2005-04-14

This is a no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point book, which effectively covers the topic of chemical process control. Though it is quite old now, much of the information is still very relevant and useful.

The way of simplifying explanations and writing from an understanding point of view (rather than merely presenting facts) is great and I wish all books were written in such a way!
