Combining theoretical work with careful historical description and analysis of new data sources, History Matters makes a strong case for a more historical approach to economics, both by argument and by example. Seventeen original essays, written by distinguished economists and economic historians, use economic theory and historical cases to explore how and why “history matters.”

The chapters, which range in subject matter from the economic theory of irreversible investment to the nineteenth-century decline in U.S. rural fertility to the English poor law reform, are unified by three themes. The first explores the significance, causes, and consequences of path dependence in the evolution of technology and institutions. The second relates to the ways in which economic and political behavior are profoundly shaped and constrained by the cultural and political context inherited from history at a particular point in time. The final theme demonstrates the importance of integrating economic theory into historical research in the gathering and interpretation of data.

This is a celebratory volume for Paul A. David, the noted Stanford (and subsequently Oxford) economic historian. David is known internationally for his contributions in American economic history, demography, and the economics of science and technology. He has long been engaged in investigating the conditions that give rise to path dependence in micro- and macro-economic phenomena.

The book brings together a group of David's students and colleagues who present seventeen papers. Nine of the papers deal with path-dependence, one of David's trademark issues; four of the papers look to the influence of culture, geography, and political institutions on economies and policies, another area in which David has made important contributions; and four deal with economic growth and demographic change, yet another of David's central concerns.

The cast of authors is impressive, including David's Stanford colleague and Nobel laureate Kenneth Arrow, as well as contemporaries from the old guard in economic history, Peter Temin, Richard Sutch, and Charles Feinstein. Contributors from a younger generation include a number of David's impressive students: Charles Calomiris, Tim Guinnane, Joshua Rosenbloom, Bill Sundstrom, David Weiman, David Weir, and Warren Whatley.

Guinnane, Sundstrom, and Whatley are to be commended for putting together such an outstanding volume. They have surely done their teacher proud.

The editors of this festschrift for Paul David, one of the greatest living economic historians - and one of those who has influenced leading economists most - have done him proud.

Festschrifts don't always work. They are prone to prolixity, and to be the recepticles of papers unwanted elsewhere. This is not the case here. The editors' decision to focus only on topics associated with Paul David give his Festschrift more unity than most, and Guinnane et al. have persuaded a stellar list of authors to contribute. These include Nobel Laureate Ken Arrow, Charles Feinstein, Tim Besley, David Weir, Warren Sanderson, and several more.

Over four decades Paul David has made seminal, brilliant, and highly imaginative contributions to the measurement of early U.S. economic growth, to explaining that growth, to the economics and economic history of technological change, and to demographic history. For this he deserves the gratitude of all economic historians. The papers reflect his achievement, and point to its ability to inspire more work.

All economic historians need to know about and read chunks of this book.

I do professional translations, and I have found this dictionary particularly helpful in legal translations. It contains many examples, key phrases and terms, which are of great use. In comparing it to others this has special advantages.

A fine modern Spanish-English legal dictionary........1999-05-14

This is an excellent dictionary for translators. The terminology is basically that of Spain and Britain, but there are detailed explanations and many examples, so that the dictionary is equally useful to translators of the Spanish or English of the Americas. There are particularly good explanations in matters relating to the differences between the two legal systems.

I found this book to be useful when looking for general terms. However, if you are searching for very specific terms used in the legal profession or more recent terminology used, then one may want to opt for something else.

Spanish Law Dictionary/Diccionario De Terminos Juridicos.......2000-04-21

I was disappointed on this dictionary. As a translator, I thought it would be a helpful tool for handling legal texts, but found it very basic and way too expensive for what it offers. It was explained to me that the hardcover makes it so pricey. In that case, it's worth waiting for the paperback version.

a legal dictionary without legal terms.......2006-01-06

This is not a legal dictionary.Many of the terms are not well defined, and it is missing many legal terms that should appear in a dictionary of this kind.The title of legal is a misnomer. I have the impression that the persons that prepared it do not have a legal background. For example, the dictionary does not cover the word in Spanish for Securities"Titulo valor" .In English a spanish speaker would not know the meaning of fee or fee simple since it is not there.Then what is there? Not much more than what you would find in a very simple bilingual dictionary, and I mean very simple.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Bandelier. If you are interested in Bandelier or history it's a great read.

The secession of the southern states marked the beginning of the trial of Confederate nationalism. The slaveholding elite that had led the South out of the Union now had to solidify its support among nonslaveholding small farmers, a class that constituted the bulk of the white population. Jefferson Davis and his new government were greatly hampered in their bid for widespread public support, partially because of the same force that had resulted in seccession--the strong states' rights predisposition of many southerners and their opposition to a strong central government--and partially because of the great social and economic gap that separated the governed from the governors. In After Secession, Paul D. Escott focuses on the challenges the South's political ideals presented to Davis in wartime and on the ways in which growing class resentments among citizens in the countryside affected the war effort. Escott examines Davis' policies, offering thought-provoking new interpretations of the Confederate government's means of decision making and its failure to respond to the needs of ordinary citizens. Escott blames the wrong person.......2006-01-20

Paul D. Escott's well researched book refutes its own thesis--that Jefferson Davis was largely responsible for the failure of the Confederacy to coalesce into unified country. What one ultimately realizes is that Escott wanted to blame Davis and disregarded what his own evidence told him, that governors such as Thomas Cobb of Georgia were actively undermining the Confederacy in an attempt to increase their own power over their states.

I give the book three stars because it is an excellent resource; anyone seeking a book from which to begin a literature search would be well served to start here. The book gets no higher ranking because of the weakness of his thesis in light of the evidence presented in this book. Indeed, rewriting the first chapter to blame the governors and unwilling citizens of the Confederacy would automatically earn the book five stars.

Insight to a Leader.......2000-03-30

Paul D. Escott shines a light on the President of the Confederacy and reveils new information about why the Civil War ended in the maner in which it did. Escott focuses on the attempts to strengthen Confederate Nationalism, particularly focusing on the efforts of Jefferson Davis. Davis' characteristics and attitudes are respectful analized by Escott to determine how they affected the survival of the Confederate States of America. Escott also looks at Davis' attitudes towards his generals and cabinet members, compairing them to that of Abraham Lincoln. This book particularly appeals to those that enjoy the Civil War, but is also enjoyable to those that would just like to know more about this aspect of American history.
