This is definitely the best introductory book there is on the subject. This was a supplemental book for an undergraduate class of mine, but I read it anyway. The authors lucid writing allows this book to be thoroughly understood by all readers despite their backround in economics. I truly believe that this book should be required reading for all history, political science, finance, sociology, and economics majors.

Unlike most books on the history of anything, this book starts from the beginning. The authors start off discussing explorers and empires and then go into colonization. Extremely informative on the economics of different regions in colonial America and the Industrial Revolution.

Rockoff is the greatest American Historian ever........1998-12-13

Rockoff gives a brilliant account of the history of the American Economy and is possibly the best American economic historian in US history.

An excellent review from the most used techniques.......2004-08-23

When I began my phD I've had to learn a lot about different techniques that I worked with. This book was an excellent help, since, despite it is written by specialists, it has an approach that even a beginner can understand.
I was further surprised in the end of my thesis when I used it once more to write deeply about the techniques. It is really a wonderful book!
The first chapter is also a good course concerning the basis of vaccum, that is required to deal with surface science techniques.

Multivariate statistical techniques, such as cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and discriminant analysis (DA), were applied for the evaluation of temporal/spatial variations and the interpretation of a large complex water quality data set of the Fuji river basin, generated during 8 years (1995-2002) monitoring of 12 parameters at 13 different sites (14@?976 observations). Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped 13 sampling sites into three clusters, i.e., relatively less polluted (LP), medium polluted (MP) and highly polluted (HP) sites, based on the similarity of water quality characteristics. Factor analysis/principal component analysis, applied to the data sets of the three different groups obtained from cluster analysis, resulted in five, five and three latent factors explaining 73.18, 77.61 and 65.39% of the total variance in water quality data sets of LP, MP and HP areas, respectively. The varifactors obtained from factor analysis indicate that the parameters responsible for water quality variations are mainly related to discharge and temperature (natural), organic pollution (point source: domestic wastewater) in relatively less polluted areas; organic pollution (point source: domestic wastewater) and nutrients (non-point sources: agriculture and orchard plantations) in medium polluted areas; and organic pollution and nutrients (point sources: domestic wastewater, wastewater treatment plants and industries) in highly polluted areas in the basin. Discriminant analysis gave the best results for both spatial and temporal analysis. It provided an important data reduction as it uses only six parameters (discharge, temperature, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, electrical conductivity and nitrate nitrogen), affording more than 85% correct assignations in temporal analysis, and seven parameters (discharge, temperature, biochemical oxygen demand, pH, electrical conductivity, nitrate nitrogen and ammonical nitrogen), affording more than 81% correct assignations in spatial analysis, of three different sampling sites of the basin. Therefore, DA allowed a reduction in the dimensionality of the large data set, delineating a few indicator parameters responsible for large variations in water quality. Thus, this study illustrates the usefulness of multivariate statistical techniques for analysis and interpretation of complex data sets, and in water quality assessment, identification of pollution sources/factors and understanding temporal/spatial variations in water quality for effective river water quality management.

Most interesting and refreshing.......2005-04-26

I wouldn't call these places the "Most Mysterious" in the world but they are mysterious none the less. The authors provide detailed background research to most of the stories in the book. They leave out very famous mysterious places such as the pyramids or nazca lines but instead chose stories that are little known but yet mysterious all the same. That is not to say there are no famous mysterious places in this book. There are stories on Stonehenge & Easter Island but also little known stories such as Grimes Graves & Tintagel. I found this book to be most interesting and refreshing.

Secrets of ancient and intriguing places.......2000-08-03

Where legend and history meet lies the fertile pasture from which mystery springs. Written documentation and oral tradition have provided us with a rich historical heritage - knowledge of kings, queens and castles, politics, religion and its saints and sinners, traitors and heroes. From the time that human beings forged their first communities, such people, events and places have formed our anchors to which this knowledge has been securely bonded. For we modern beings, only those people, places and associated events which are 'factual', well documented and immediately feasible are the only 'reality'. Legend and mystery have their place as abstract curios worthy of a passing interest, and for most of us they are quickly passed over as being of little consequence to "what is".

Not so for Lionel and Patricia Fanthorpe though! Following upon their excellent book "The World's Most Mysterious People" their equally fascinating and tirelessly researched "The World's Most Mysterious Places" proves this. Once again they worry those 'loose ends' and the unsatisfactory logical explanations for events, structures and phenomena that have only served to raise more questions than answers to their mystery. Lionel and Patricia dare to ask the questions; to revisit, re-excavate and share their findings with we 'armchair investigators'.

This is a book that encompasses mysteries from the world over, so not only are we guided with customary open mindedness through houses in Devon and Wales which are reported to be occupied by the shades oflong dead occupants, but are taken to ponder upon the strange phenonemon of the tomb of the Turkish St. Nicholas whose spirit lives on in childrens' eagerly awaited Santa Claus. What caused the hauntingly fragrant scent that emitted from his final resting place? The Colossus of Rhodes, a gigantic bronze statue of the Sun god, it seems, may well have been a functional war machine which pounded enemy ships with a mighty arm from its lofty vantage point.

As we consider the riddle of ancient Gaelic script found on stone slabs in the Americas, rethink our dismissal of Atlantis as the long lost island of a brilliant culture and yearn to visit for ourselves eerie Maltese caves and shrines, the Fanthorpes have bonded history and mystery, myth, legend and psychology between these pages to tantalise their readers and leave them itching for more answers. Hopefully we can depend on the intrepid couple to keep 'boldly going' and long continue to travel far and wide to bring them home to us -- or better still, inspire us to get out there and find them for ourselves.

Simply an excellent work for anyone's library........2002-08-06

This book is written somewhat on the order of Reader's Digest's Natural Wonders of the World. It covers several hundred mysterious places, such as Easter Island, Stonehenge, Maya ruins, Jericho, Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Mesa Verde, the Bermuda Triangle, etc. Many lesser known, equally interesting places are covered as well.

The format is a simple title heading followed by a page or less written description, usually in great detail. Each heading is generally accompanied by one or more color photos that seem to have been carefully selected.

I have been fortunate enough to visit many of the places discussed, and I assure you that the writing is so evocative of their appearance as to bring back a host of fond memories. Even though the book went out of print rather quickly, for reasons I cannot understand, it is a prize, and I believe it can be enjoyed thoroughly by teen readers and higher. Archeology buffs will go wild over it. I recommend it highly.
