Book Description
Whether or not foreign companies can succeed in China is largely determined by how they enter the market. This book offers insightful lessons to international managers in this area. It integrates views of both foreign business and Chinese government, describes entry choices and related governmental policies, compares pros and cons of each entry choice for foreign firms, and provides a series of thoughtful advice to business people.
The book illuminates how to enter China for international corporations seeking preemptive opportunities and long-term competitive positions abroad. It presents China's investment environment at the turn of a new century; outlines the impact of China's WTO membership on these companies; articulates each of the entry mode choices available to foreign companies; analyzes factors underlying entry mode selection and equity ownership arrangement; and provides insight into entry mode selection from case studies. It also synthesizes relevant literature, offers managerial lessons regarding entry strategies, and illustrates Chinese government views and expectations of MNCs.
By choosing an entry mode that fits organizational capabilities, objectives, and environmental contingencies, foreign businesses can accomplish their strategic goals, prevent uncompensated exposure of proprietary knowledge, and mitigate transactional hazards that may be precipitated during allocation and local operations. Students taking a "Doing Business in China" course, executives interested in foreign investment, and scholars interested in international expansion will find How to Enter China invaluable for those purposes.

Book Description
Vegetation plays an important role in partitioning solar energy and water into the geosphere and the atmosphere. When changes occur in areas related to agriculture, urbanization and mining, the resulting changes in land cover and land use often lead to disturbances in both the atmosphere and the subsurface environment.
This edited volume addresses the relationship between changes in land use and the delicate balance between water, solute, and heat cycles in basins. It examines evapotranspiration, the rate of groundwater recharge, discharge rates into rivers or oceans, and the moisture content of soils. The combined effects of these factors will have a significant impact on issues affecting the global environment.
Subsurface Hydrological Responses to Land Cover and Land Use Changes will be of value to experts in academia, consulting firms, and planning agencies who are interested in subsurface hydrological problems. It may be appropriate for use in courses such as environmental hydrology, subsurface hydrology, water management and land use management.

Book Description
An alternative rendering of the theory of relativity by a distinguished English mathematician and philosopher. Three-part treatment presents an overview of general principles, mainly philosophical in character; describes physical applications and the results deducible from the formulas assumed for the gravitation and electromagnetic fields; presents an exposition of the elementary theory of tensors.

Why Einstein might be wrong........2004-10-14
It is a delight to have this volume back in print again. For anyone with an interest in Whitehead's philosophy, this is an essential work that requires very little discussion. Whitehead is, here and in all of his work, a marvelous writer. But this is a technical piece, not necessarily of interest to the broadest audience imaginable. So, very briefly, what I want to do here is suggest to physicists, physics enthusiasts, and philosophers of science why they need to be interested in this book.
In the physics community, it is well known that Whitehead's theory of relativity is "wrong." Evidence presented by Clifford Will in 1971 articles in the "Astrophysical Journal," which were later summarized in his _Theory and Experiment in Gravitational Physics_ (available at Amazon), "demonstrate" that Whitehead's theory makes predictions that are violations of observational data. Very convincing, and as nearly as I can tell, Will's arguments have only one (or two, depending on how you count) problem(s):
They are predicated on two assumptions, one that is so limited it grossly misconstrues the aims of Whitehead's theory, while the other is demonstrably false.
Will's arguments against Whitehead (which come from the work of J.L. Synge) state up front that Whitehead's theory is based upon a "(1)non-dynamical (2)flat metric." #2 is the limited approach that grossly misconstrues Whitehead's argument, while #1 is the demonstrable falsehood.
It is true that, in the explicit mathematical treatments of the second half of the book, Whitehead is using Euclidean geometry. But the idea that the "flat-metric" plays any central role in Whitehead's theory is explicitly repudiated on the VERY FIRST PAGE of text in Whitehead's book. Whitehead makes it absolutely clear that he is only using "flat" geometry for purposes of mathematical convenience; it plays no essential role in his larger theory. Indeed, in 1923, G. Temple actually generalized Whitehead's program to a non-flat system of mathematics. But, despite the fact that everyone mentions Temple, no one actually looks at his work, or addresses Whitehead's larger arguments in that light.
The claim that Whitehead's theory is "non-dynamical" is demonstrably false. Unfortunately, Whitehead put this demonstration in a book that had been published three-years earlier, his _Enquiry into the Principles of Natural Knowledge_. This, along with _Concept of Nature_ and the finally republished _Principle_ form what might be thought of as the "triptych" of Whitehead's philosophy of nature. All of these books are the results of a common line of inquiry. But, unfortunately (again), Whitehead's argument for the dynamical nature of his theory is only implicit in _The Principle of Relativity_; he assumed people read his other books.
Now, the centerpiece of Whitehead's argument -- the part that Synge explicitly ignores and which Will (following Synge) doesn't even acknowledge -- is the *philosophical* critique of Einstein's theory. This philosophical critique is seldom enough noticed in the philosophical literature; as far as I know, has never been addressed within physics. The criticism is this: if the geometry of space is altered by every last particle of matter and energy which influences space, then there is no possibility of meaningful measurement. In order to measure a piece of space, my unit of measure must have some kind of uniform meaning, such that I can legitimately move my "yardstick" from "here to there." Einsteinian General Relativity undercuts this possibility, by denying the existence of any such uniformity. The structure of space is absolutely dependent upon the contingent distributions of matter and energy.
As a result, before we can engage in meaningful measurements, we must know how matter and energy is distributed throughout the universe so as to know how to interpret our measurements. In other words, if Einstein is right, we're boxed into a situation where the only way we can know anything, we must first know everything.
Clearly, I have the space here for neither a careful nor a detailed examination of Whitehead's argument. There are some interesting responses to this criticism that can be developed from the claim that space exhibits "maximal symmetry" in the abstract. This claim is rarely mentioned even in the orthodox physics literature -- Weinberg and Carroll are the only major texts on the subject which I know that talk about the subject at all. In any case, Whitehead's work is more than deserving of examination, examination that is *NOT* dominated by the narrowest consideration of nothing beyond the mathematical treatments at the end of the book. These, too, are of interest, though by now it would seem more for their historical worth than their direct connection to cutting edge cosmology. Still, even this part is worthy of serious attention, since it is the basis of Whitehead's rejection of the "geometrical metaphors" which so dominate the field.

A diamond in the rough..........2006-02-19
Having grown tired & bored over the years of reading the same-old, mass-marketed crap from major and "prestigious" publishers, I began turning my attention to the bookstores' small-press sections for potentially more innovative & intriguing offerings. (It's the same as when music lovers scour the internet for more original music than is being offered by the 3 or 4 radio conglomerates.) Although I find the activity entertaining and worthwhile, more often than not, I walk away empty handed. Every once in awhile, however, my perseverance pays off; I find a gem. That's the case with this heartfelt and interrelated blend of poems and short stories that I discovered at a local bookstore. There's a wonderful, quiet noise at work here, more about the heart than the mind. By drawing us into these 23 pieces, the author connects with the reader on a deep but accessible & personal level. It's the pain (mental & physical) & struggles & hopes of everyday people that dominate this collection, along with the possibility that life might occasionally offer a form of relief along the way, sometimes by way of humor. If you'd like to be wondrously entertained, while at the same time be compelled to, heaven forbid, think, then read it. Who knows, it may, at least temporarily, "ease the pain."
Close your eyes and he'll take you there ..........2006-02-02
The style of short stories and poems in this book is a style I have not experienced before. A tad confusing at times, until you are done reading ... then you ponder, and suddenly, you feel immersed in the center of his thoughts, his stories, his experiences. And then you feel yourself smile or perhaps a heaviness in your heart ... or even a tear in your eye. He vividly brings to life his experiences as a young boy, a pilot in Vietnam, and an ER doctor in rural America. Don't miss this ...

The Black Seminoles: History of a Freedom-Seeking People
ASIN: 0813027438 |
Book Description
This is the first full-length ethnography of a unique community within the African diaspora. Rosalyn Howard traces the history of the isolated "Red Bays" community of the Bahamas, from their escape from the plantations of the American South through their utilization of social memory in the construction of new identity and community.
Some of the many African slaves escaping from southern plantations traveled to Florida and joined the Seminole Indians, intermarried, and came to call themselves Black Seminoles. In 1821, pursued and harassed by European Americans through the First Seminole War, approximately 200 members of this group fled to Andros Island, where they remained essentially isolated for nearly 150 years. Drawing on archival and secondary sources in the United States and the Bahamas as well as interviews with members of the present-day Black Seminole community on Andros Island, Howard reconstructs the story of the Red Bays people. She chronicles their struggles as they adapt to a new environment and forge a new identity in this insular community and analyzes the former slaves' relationship with their Native American companions.
Black Seminoles in contemporary Red Bays number approximately 290, the majority of whom are descended directly from the original settlers. As part of her research, Howard lived for a year in this small community, recording its oral history and analyzing the ways in which that history informed the evolving identity of the people. Her treatment dispels the air of mystery surrounding the Black Seminoles of Andros and provides a foundation for further anthropological and historical investigations.

Book Description
The Gemini 7 spacecraft's then-new record for a long duration manned space flight, 330 hours and 35 minutes, is chronicled in this volume.
Customer Reviews:
The US Takes the Lead in the Space Race.......2006-06-17
The dual flight of Gemini 6 and 7 was a major milestone for the United States space program. From this flight on, the US had the lead in the space race and never gave it up. Every single accomplishment of the Soviet Space program had now been equalled or bettered, and the United States never stopped until Apollo 17.
This book includes the press kit, mission report, astronaut debriefing and other information on the flight. The CD includes the second part of a NASA documentary (the first part is on the Gemini 6 mission report CD), a Jim Lovell interview, and still photography from the mission. Gemini has been the forgotten program of the US space program, this book helps fill the gap.
Lots of Gemini information.......2003-01-07
Within minutes of opening this book I learned several interesting things about Gemini. For instance: the pressure suits used on Gemini 7 were thin faboric with soft zipper attached helmets, these things really remind me of a windbreaker jacket! Since detailed Gemini information is hard to come by (Gemini being refered to as the forgotten manned program by many NASA engineers,) this book contains a wealth of knowledge.
Even if you don't collect the series, this is a great piece to add to the space library of the technically minded.
Another Good Book in the Series.......2002-04-10
Over the past three and a half years, Robert Godwin and Apogee Books have compiled a variety of various NASA documents, press kits, crew interviews and the like, which recount the early days of the space race and specifically the Apollo missions. As is obvious from the title, this book does not focus on the Apollo moon mission, but on its predecessor, the Gemini missions and in particular Gemini 7. Gemini 7 was commanded by Frank Borman and with James Lovell (of Apollo 13 fame), as it is pilot and set an endurance record of 14 days, which was not surpassed until Skylab. This mission also included the rendezvous with Gemini 6, which was the first time that two vehicles met in orbit and was a precursor to the Apollo dockings in lunar orbit.
Unlike other volumes in the series that open with the usual NASA mission press kit, this book opens with some hard to find NASA Fact and Educational Sheets and two press releases. Even a cursory glance of these small introductory documents shows the competition between NASA and the Russian space program by indicating that with at the conclusion of the Gemini 7 flight, NASA's spacecraft time and total man-hours in space will surpass the Russians. The next section of the book contains the usual NASA press kit. The press kit contains information on the medical experiments that were to be conducted, some of which sounded quite unpleasant, the flight plan and a large section of docking maneuvers. I found it amusing that the press kit even contained information on the meal plans for each astronaut. Afterwards there is a brief, but extremely interesting report of the tracking network. The next sections contain the pre and post Mission Operations Directorate reports on the mission and some really nice line drawings of the vehicle. Basically, these are the press kits for internal NASA use. There are also some nice general information post-launch NASA fact sheets.
The crew debrief section, which is about 90 pages long, contains the Borman's and Lovell's comments and feelings about various parts of the mission and for the most part avoids the technical NASA-ese language. A good portion of the crew debriefing seems to be devoted to the medical experiments (and others as well), Earth observation, the Environmental Control System and general crew comfort. I'd expect this report to focus on these topics, since this 14-day mission was a test to determine if humans could endure the time it takes to get to the moon, explore and return to Earth. There is a lot discussion about the military's involvement in the project, more than I thought. I always find the crew debriefing quite enjoyable, because it is the closest thing to being there and you get two or three first had view points of various aspects of the mission.
I also found the CD as enjoyable as ever. It contains a nice 15 minute interview with Jim Lovell, a NASA film on the mission and over 400 photos of the Earth. While many of the photos are low resolution, there are still really good and high resolution photographs are outstanding.
Some general information that might be useful.
1) These reports are just scanned-in documents from previously released NASA press kits, etc., In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.
2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books and documents.
3) Many people have asked why the post mission reports are not included. Since NASA has published about ten books with hundred of pages each (The NASA SP series). Specifically, "On the Shoulder of Titan," "Earth Photographs from Gemini VI through XII" and "Gemini Mid-Program Summary"
