Book Description
This book is an insightful and accessible analysis of contemporary Malaysian business and politics. Using the concepts of rent and rent-seeking as tools to study the Malaysian political economy, the authors explore how political patronage influences the accumulation and concentration of wealth. The book considers the impact of party politics and economic development on the relationship between politics and business in Malaysia, and provides up-to-date discussions of government-led change in Malaysia’s business community, including the emergence of a Malay business class. In this revised edition, the authors examine how the 1997 Asian currency, liquidity and financial crises have impacted on Malaysia’s economy. Their discussion canvasses various economic policy responses, including capital control measures, as well the ensuing economic recession and political turmoil.
Customer Reviews:
Real World View.......2000-07-27
Those pursuing major business (or considering pursuit of business) in Malaysia need to read this book. If you are very familiar with Malaysia politics and business, it makes a great read. Otherwise, only of interest to academics in politics, political economy, and perhaps 'Transparency International.' The only caveat is that it mainly applies to very large business efforts - while something of the entire patronage culture obviously permiates many transaction levels here, only the really big (nationally important) stuff draws the kind of attention discussed in this book.
The book basically presents a slightly pessimistic but fairly accurate view of major business efforts and their effects. The book concludes in the midst of the 1997/8 economic melt-down and subsequent political maneuverings, but stops well short of the late 1999 election.
Insightful and objective.......1999-03-22
When looking at the political economy of Malaysia many authors are quick in taking an extreme point of view. Gomez and Jomo, on the other hand, focus on the reality of the Malaysian situation. Their analysis of the functioning of Malaysia's political economy is frank and thoroughly backed up. By concentrating on the effects of Mahathir's privatisation policies on the Malaysian economy, they have pinpointed several key structural weaknesses which need to be addressed; especially in view of the pressing politial and economic issues which are currently affecting Malaysia. The book therefore, is an absolute must for people interested in Malaysia's complex economic structure.
Fills half of the gap!.......1999-02-13
This book is essentially about profits, politics, and patronage in Malaysia. Indeed it is a useful detailed study on 'political economy in action' rather than the political economy of Malaysia. Those looking for a survey of previous studies on the political economy in Malaysia shall be disappointed.

Book Description
Morgan Jones'
Valve Amplifiers has been widely recognised as the most complete guide to valve amplifier design, modification, analysis, construction and maintenance written for over 30 years. As such it is unique in presenting the essentials of 'hollow-state' electronics and valve amp design for engineers and enthusiasts in the familiar context of current best practice in electronic design, using only currently available components. The author's straightforward approach, using as little maths as possible, and lots of design knowhow, makes this book ideal for those with a limited knowledge of the field as well as being the standard reference text for experts in valve audio and a wider audience of audio engineers facing design challenges involving valves.
Design principles and construction techniques are provided so readers can devise and build from scratch designs that actually work. Morgan Jones takes the reader through each step in the process of design, starting with a brief review of electronic fundamentals relevant to valve amplifiers, simple stages, compound stages, linking stages together, and finally, complete designs. Practical aspects, including safety, are addressed throughout.
The third edition includes a new chapter on distortion and many further new and expanded sections throughout the book, including: comparison of bias methods, constant current sinks, upper valve choice, buffering and distortion, shunt regulated push-pull (SRPP) amplifier, use of oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers, valve cooling and heatsinks, US envelope nomenclature and suffixes, heater voltage versus applied current, moving coil transformer source and load terminations.
* The practical guide to analysis, modification, design, construction and maintenance of valve amplifiers
* The fully up-to-date approach to valve electronics
* Essential reading for audio designers and music and electronics enthusiasts alike
Customer Reviews:
Valve Amplifiers 3rd Ed.......2007-09-24
Book is very informative, however it is not for the novice/amatuer.A fundamental understanding of solid-state electronics is needed prior to delving into this(book).
Charming Technical Discussion.......2007-08-09
In "Valve Amplifiers", Morgan Jones attempts to do a core dump of his vast experience on the subject. If you once knew how to use an NPN transmitter in an emitter follower circuit, this book will teach you about tubes in audio applications. If you don't know simple transistor circuits, I think this book will leave you behind quickly. The focus is on high-quality tube-based amplifiers -- not the stuff you'll find in a guitar amplifier, which was primitive even 50 years ago when most of the circuits were designed. He tells you the hi-fi solutions, which don't apply to guitar amp circuits, which points out the various parisitics and limitations that make that "brown sound".
On the other hand, if you can grok it, you'll learn how to bias simple tube circuits and interconnect stages. Emphasis in on the practical.
If you just want an accessible explanation of guitar amplifiers, try Dave Hunter's "The Guitar Amp Handbook". If you want excruciatingly detailed discussion of some common guitar amp circuits, try Richard Kuehnel's books.
Having read the book, when I look at the guitar amp circuits I have to laugh. As I suspected, most guitar amps, even the ones that sound good, have major problems that keep them from sounding their best.
Jones' style is charming. I think the emphasis on practical considerations in this book makes it worthwhile.
Excellent reference for new and experienced builders.......2007-05-10
Well worth the purchase if you are considering DIY. Many schematics and building blocks are discussed, which is important. You don't just look at a few standard amplifiers and choose which to build; you actually get trained on the tools and options to custom build your own amp.
Do I want to switch my concertina over to a LTP? With this book, I will know how to do it. Good calculations and equations throughout.
Very good and useful.......2005-09-30
I have poor understanding of electronics, but this book explains well all concepts, and is enough easy to follow.
To me is a book to read again and again to absorb new concepts, explained in a plain and easy form.
Very practical, lot of examples, not too much teory.
tubes amps.......2005-08-26
the book is the best of two worlds
It's well written and gives the bare minimum of theory you have to know to jump on the soldering iron without too much fuss about maths
Numerous ,practical exemples are given with clear schematics
In my opinion this is the very best book you can begin with when dealing with audio tubes amplifiers

Book Description
This third updated and enlarged edition includes about 350 new papers added to the previous list of references. The contents have been revised and updated in the areas of:
Thermonuclear pumping; Throughput; Transmission probability; Electronic circuit simulation; Sorption on charcoal; Desorption from porous materials; Desorption from stainless steel, A1 alloys (outgassing rates); Ion bombardment (glow discharge) cleaning; Clay - type pumps; Turbomolecular pumps-improvements; Cryosorption; NEG (Nonevaporable getter) linear pumps; Standards for measurement of pumping speed (Recommended practice, test domes); Spinning rotor gauges; Quartz friction gauges; Increase of sensitivity of thermocouple gauges; Lubrication in vacuum; Calibration of diffusion leaks; Improvements in leak detection.
Besides its role in educational activities, the book will also serve as a handbook for those working in this field, or in fields connected to Vacuum Technology.
Comments from the press on the second edition:
"A valuable reference work for undergraduate libraries...well organized and clearly written and strikes an appropriate balance between completeness and attention to fundamentals. The index and references are unusually complete. Recommended." (Choice)
"Roth's new book contains a comprehensive collection of information on rarefied-gas flow, physical and chemical phenomena associated with vacuum technology, the production and measurement of high vacuum and sealing and leak-detection techniques. One finds a wealth of equations, numerical examples, tables, graphs and monographs. The book is more a handbook than a source book of latest developments. It is suitable for teaching, but the wealth of organized data should also make the book highly useful to engineers..." (Physics Today)

Worthless Purchase........2006-04-29
This "book" -- and I use the term lightly because it is really little more than a photocopy with a slick cover stapled over it -- is not worth purchasing. It provides only the poems from Whitman's Drum-Taps which can be found in any collected edition of the poet's work; in other words, for the same price, you can have all of his poems, not just these. I purchased this book in the hopes it would be the original 1865 edition of these poems, but it's not -- just the revised versions (the poems changed dramatically over the years) rearranged in the original order. What a waste.

Book Description.......2001-02-16
Delavan S. Miller served as a drummer boy in Co. H, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery Regiment; enlisting on April 5, 1862, giving his age as 18 (his true age was 12). The regiment formed a part of the capitol's defenses, its men occupying various fortifications and drilling with the large siege guns in them. The 2nd New York Heavy Artillery became one of the units transferred to infantry duty and assigned to the Army of the Potomac in May 1864. Assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, Miller and his comrades participated in the battles at Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox. By the time of Lee's surrender, the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery suffered 1,140 men killed, wounded, & missing. The unit was mustered out on September 29, 1865. Miller participated in most of the marches and engagements of his regiment, and reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on March 31, 1864 (the same day as his mustering out).

Book Description
The previous three booklets were produced in order to assist the beginner and reduce the time spent taking notes during workshops. This book replaces and expands those booklets, drawing attention to some of the many aspects of dance which are very often ignored in the modern day workshop. The use of a simple tabulation enables the taps and rhythms to be analysed and the building blocks to be recognised, abbreviated, and assembled into traditional music patterns and phrasing. All of the tap schedules are shown as musical rhythms at the end of each chapter when required.
The book contains chapters detailing two solo's; one is a pedestal clog dane and the other a simple step dance into which clog steps may be put and everyone is encouraged to develop a stage further. More importabtly, the book details the entire repertoire of Samuel Bell, a past champion clog dancer, together with a short history of his life and details of the North Country competitions in the thirties. Finally, there is a more recent record of a simple duet which is suitable for all ages that does not require great athletic ability. The book is not presented as a complete work on clog dancing, but is an attempt to show in detail some of the steps and rhythms in music and tabulation format, with a few points above their performance.
The main emphasis is to improve performance, in particular the understanding of timings and the rapport that is required between the dancer, audience, and the musician. It is essentially a guide to be used by dancers, if so inspired to try the dances and impose their own personalitites upon them.
