This is like another textbook. If you are looking for a supplement to compliment the material, it is a very in depth examination of critical constitutional areas. It is not a book of case briefs.

5 out of 5 stars Constitutional Analysis by Williams.......2004-06-01

This is an excellent work on the origins of Constitutional Law
and the various governing precedents and protocols. For instance,
a litigant must have standing in order to have a case considered by the United States Supreme Court. The concept of standing requires that the party have a stake in the outcome. The Constitutional legal apparati consists of the following:
o It establishes a national government.
o It controls the relationship between the states and the federal
    government
    o It defines personal liberties
o It contains provisos for the perpetual operation of the
government. i.e. the operation of law of the Magna Carta since
    1215.

The basic pattern of the distinction between liberty and governmental power/prerogative is present in virtually all constitutional cases. The Courts are asked to set or interpret
the dividing line between liberty and the governmental powers of the states and the federal government. For a Court to overrule a previous decision/precedent-it must be confident that the
decision-making criteria in the past stare decisis is in error
or in need of substantial revision.

According to Justice Jackson, " The very purpose of the Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be applied by the Courts."

Overall, the work has a generous coverage of individual liberties and protections, the National Powers, State Powers, the Constitution, the process of Judicial Review, Intergovernmental immunities, the relationships between and amongst the states, inter-governmental and foreign relations.
The Constitution of the United States is published in the
appendix. This work has a wide constituency of users in government, the legal profession, journalism and a general concensus of users in academe.

Excellent study aid for tests and very informative for those interested in the rationale behind US Supreme Court decisions.

5 out of 5 stars A Highly Useful Study Aid!.......2004-01-24

This is an extremely useful book for any first year law student. I have about every imaginable first year study aids, but by far this is one of the best on the market! Professor Baker does an outstanding job of explaining complex issues to the novice constitutional law student. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to enhance their legal knowledge. It's also a very handy tool for final exam time!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Supplement to Constitutional Law.......2004-01-18

Professor Baker's "Constitutional Analysis" is an excellent supplement to the study of first year constitutional law. However, I would recommend the book to any individual wishing to improve their understanding of the Constitution. The book uses common language and reads like a well-written novel. The Index and Table of Cases allow you to quickly locate any topic or case quickly and efficiently.

              Book Description

Over the past decade, the prospect of climate change resulting from anthropogenic CO 2 has become a matter of growing public concern. Not only is the reduction of CO 2 emissions extremely important, but keeping the cost at a manageable level is a prime priority for companies and the public, alike.
The CO 2 capture project (CCP) came together with a common goal in mind: find a technological process to capture CO 2 emissions that is relatively low-cost and able be to be expanded to industrial applications.
The Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project outlines the research and findings of all the participating companies and associations involved in the CCP. The final results of thousands of hours of research are outlined in the book, showing a successful achievement of the CCPs goals for lower cost CO 2 capture technology and furthering the safe, reliable option of geological storage.
The Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project is a valuable reference for any scientists, industrialists, government agencies, and companies interested in a safer, more cost-efficient response to the CO 2 crisis.

*Succeeds in tackling the most important issues at the heart of the CO 2 crisis: lower-cost and safer solutions, and making the technology available at an industrial level.
*Contains technical papers and findings of all researchers involved in the CO 2 capture and storage project (CCP)
*Consolidates thousands of hours of research into a concise and valuable reference work, providing up-to-the minute information on CO 2 capture and underground storage alternatives.

              Book Description

V.I. Arnold, who is renowned for his lively style, retraces the beginnings of mathematical analysis and theoretical physics in the works (and the intrigues!) of the great scientists of the 17th century. Some of Huygens' and Newton's ideas. several centuries ahead of their time, were developed only recently. The author follows the link between their inception and the breakthroughs in contemporary mathematics and physics. he book provides present-day generalizations of Newton's theorems on the elliptical shape of orbits and on the transcendence of abelian integrals; it offers a brief review of the theory of regular and chaotic movement in celestial mechanics, including the problem of ports in the distribution of smaller planets and a discussion of the structure of planetary rings.

Translated from the Russian by E.J.F. Primrose

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Arnol'd's view of history.......2004-02-04

Entertaining and opinionated survey of the history of the origins of mechanics, post-Galileo, Kepler and Descartes, by the greatest living theorist of classical mechanics. Arnol'd shows sympathy for Hooke and argues that Hooke, not Newton, should be given credit for the inverse square law of gravity. However, I find Newton's approach to be more convincing. Arnol'd praises Newton's geometric insight and reminds us that Leibnitz mechanized the rules of calculus so that (fortunately, I would say) it can be taught to idiots. Interesting and highly entertaining descriptions of the nonsense of the extreme formalization of simple mathematical problems (in the hands of the Bourbaki school of math, e.g.) can be found in the footnotes.

A note to students: classical mechanics, in most texts, is taught in totally unphysical postulational style, divorced from experiment/observation. This is an anachronism. If you ask the typical physics professor "What, exactly, is the origin of the inverse square law of gravity, how was it discovered?", then he/she will not be able to explain it. Textbooks, blindly present a postulatory exposition (bad physics!) and merely plug an assumed force law (where did it come from!?) into The Second Law and derive Kepler's orbits, but this is not an explanation how Newton arrived at "1/r^2" in the first place. Hooke's explanation can be found in the monograph reviewed here. Newton's original "inverse solution" can be found in my book "Classical Mechanics", where the connection of apples with the discovery of the law of gravity is also explained, following "Principia".

Having written all that, I strongly recommend this beautifully-written little monograph for both enlightenment and entertainment.

                  Product Description

                  E. B. White is the finest essayist in the United States. He says wise things gracefully; he is the master of an idiom at once exact and suggestive, distinguished yet familiar. His style is crisp and tender, and incomparably his own. A city-dwelling Thoreau holed up very frequently on the first page of The New Yorker, but from that Tower of Irony remembering Maine, where he lived part of the time, and Walden Pond, where Thoreau lived briefly. This is the British edition of a collection of essays, stories and poems. As one reads these prose pieces, ranging from longish essays and short, short stories (most but not all of which have appeared in The New Yorker or elsewhere), to paragraphs that one recalls from The New Yorker (and about which at the time one had felt Mr. White's touch), one is haunted by the desire to analyze the secret of these telling and economical effects. They add up to (or perhaps "fuse into" would be better) this writer's style, which is one with his substance. The wit is marked at once by penetration and by compassion, the nobility is without affectation, and the homespunness is unaffected, too. This book is American prose and, one is tempted to say, Americanism at its best.

                                  Book Description

Just four months after Richard Nixon's resignation, New York Times reporter Seymour Hersh unearthed a new case of government abuse of power: the CIA had launched a domestic spying program of Orwellian proportions against American dissidents during the Vietnam War. The country's best investigative journalists and members of Congress quickly mobilized to probe a scandal that seemed certain to rock the foundations of this secret government. Subsequent investigations disclosed that the CIA had plotted to kill foreign leaders and that the FBI had harassed civil rights and student groups. Some called the scandal 'son of Watergate.'

Many observers predicted that the investigations would lead to far-reaching changes in the intelligence agencies. Yet, as Kathryn Olmsted shows, neither the media nor Congress pressed for reforms. For all of its post-Watergate zeal, the press hesitated to break its long tradition of deference in national security coverage. Congress, too, was unwilling to challenge the executive branch in national security matters. Reports of the demise of the executive branch were greatly exaggerated, and the result of the 'year of intelligence' was a return to the status quo.

3 out of 5 stars A good lesson in political history, not very revealing.......1999-10-07

Written from a typical partisan perspective, i.e. republicans, democrats, liberals, conservatives. No mention of participants' connections to Elite groups, i.e. Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission, Bilderbergs. A good documentary, none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Understanding of the Facts, Spin-free.......1999-05-15

There have been so many books on this subject which have attempted to present one or another political party's point of view in a convincing manner that it is truly refreshing to read an author who gets her facts straight and lets the reader come to his or her own conclusions. Olmsted looks carefully at these investigations, and presents them honestly and with understanding. Good job!

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Not-So-Distant Mirror.......1999-04-09

If anyone still believes the mainstream press protects the interests of the average citizen, this book will disabuse you of that notion very quickly. Olmstead delivers a fascinating and lively expose of how the Washington press corps -- faced with a real opportunity in the 1970s to bring light and accountability into one of the darkest corners of our government -- turned tail and ran. Her book goes a long way towards explaining why media coverage of the so-called "intelligence community" is so lame and subservient, even to this day. Well-written, thoroughly enjoyable, and damned infuriating.

                                    Book Description

In Fortunes of History Donald R. Kelley offers an authoritative examination of historical writing during the "long nineteenth century"—the years from the French Revolution to those just after the First World War. He provides a comprehensive analysis of the theories and practices of British, French, German, Italian, and American schools of historical thought, their principal figures, and their distinctive methods and self-understandings. Kelley treats the modern traditions of European world and national historiography from the Enlightenment to the "new histories" of the twentieth century, attending not only to major authors and schools but also to methods, scholarship, criticisms, controversies, ideological questions, and relations to other disciplines.

                                      Book Description

This book describes the development of the scientific article from its modest beginnings to the global phenomenon that it has become today. Their analysis of a large sample of texts in French, English, and German focuses on the changes in the style, organization, and argumentative structure of scientific communication over time. They also speculate on the future currency of the scientific article, as it enters the era of the World Wide Web. This book is an outstanding resource text in the rhetoric of science, and will stand as the definitive study on the topic.

4 out of 5 stars Future online journals?.......2004-06-01

Over the centuries, scientific articles have acquired a distinctive style of writing, which you may see in the examples shown here. Gradually, authors have striven to write as objectively as possible, or at least give that impression. To this end, the first person has been deprecated in favour of the third person. So that instead of writing "I painted the wall", you would write "The wall was painted". Third person and passive form.

The book also describes the evolution of the scientific journals. An international apparatus that is very specialised and lucrative for a few publishers like Reed-Elsevier.

To some of you, the most salient points will be the discussion of the future of scientific publishing. The sheer cost of some journals is prohibitive, even in developed countries. Out of sight for developing countries. There is speculation that the rise of the Web can lead to new online journals that have much fewer subscription fees, and possibly faster publication times.
