    Book Description

Legal Research Made Easy is designed to take the fear out of doing legal research, no matter whom the researcher may be. It answers how to do it, when it is necessary, where you should look, what you should be looking for and why it is important.

Updated to cover the expanded use of the Internet in legal research, as well as the traditional books that contain our laws. This new edition covers the core components of any legal research project such as: statutes and codes; case law; practice manuals; monographs; treatises; legal periodicals and Shepard's citations. New material discussed includes: on-line databases; bar associations; government websites; law schools; restatements of the law; administrative law research and local ordinance research.

With a sample research problem to serve as a guide and research tips to save time, the legal research process is finally made clear for everyone.

This book is good for beginners, and I refer the hono[u]rable readers/reviewers to the review I wrote about this book sometime ago.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and easy to understand, for the layperson.......2003-03-27

The heading says it all. This book is a good introduction to the sometimes baffling world of legal research. Aimed at the layperson, this book is also good for high school and undergraduate courses (including paralegal).

            Book Description

Many mammals, such as otters, live in close association with rivers and streams, feeding in them, or using them as a place of safety or means of escape from predators. The distinct adaptations that riparian mammals have evolved in order to live in these environments also handicap them for living elsewhere. These animals are therefore threatened by alterations to their environment. In recent years, our rivers have become highly polluted, and have been subject to bankside modifications for agriculture and forestry, enhanced or decreased water flow, and recreation. As a result, they have become less and less suitable for these highly specialized animals. This book looks at the habitat utilization, adaptation, feeding ecology, and conservation status of a range of riparian mammals. It gives insights into the problems facing these fascinating animals, and how they might be overcome.

                                Book Description

A new kind of optics has grown up during the last 25 years. Geometrical optics has been studied for centuries (the law of reflection was known to the ancient Greeks) and wave optics (heralded by Huygens' Treatise on Light) has been studied for more than 300 years. But in the mid 1970s it began to be understood that when natural processes focus light, as when sunlight is reflected from the sea at sunset, the light caustics that are produced have a systematic behavior previously unrecognized. Natural Focusing and Fine Structure of Light: Caustics and Wave Dislocations provides a definitive account of how classical optics has been reconstructed in a modern way by emphasizing the hierarchy of singularities that exists in light fields. The book discusses the singularities of geometrical optics and their systematization by catastrophe theory. It explores the diffraction patterns associated with caustics that are dominated by wave dislocations, line singularities of the phase, and analogous to crystal dislocations. The book is a perfect blend of mathematics and physics, combining theory, computer simulation, and beautiful experimental photographs of the phenomena studied.

5 out of 5 stars Unrivaled in this topic.......2007-07-31

John Nye published with Sir Michael Berry a paper titled "Dislocations in Wave Trains" [Proc. Royal Soc. London A, _336_ 165 (1974)]. This work helped catapult optics into a new realm, part of which is explored in this book.

The first chapter or so can easily capture the interest of anyone (with a strong scientific background). Patterns on the bottom of swimmings pools and reflections in coffee cups are mathematically analyzed in a clear way. Subsequent chapters are much more "deep" but equally fascinating.

This is an incredibly specialized book. That said, it is a treasure to anyone interested in this or related fields (singular optics, mathematical optics, wave optics, etc). It would be a valuable addition to a library (university, lab, etc.).

4 out of 5 stars Well-written and nicely illustrated book.......2001-12-31

This book is somewhat difficult to review because I think the book will appeal mostly to readers with a somewhat specialist interest in the subject. Those readers will discover that the book is very well-written and thought through. It contains numerous interesting discussions, elaborations, etc. Everything very nicely illustrated. The author clearly demonstrates how to present specialist material in a lively manner.

For the more general public (i.e. scientists, physicists, mathematicians) it will appear as a specialized book, which may draw and keep their attention because the material is well presented. It may also be that they quickly lose interest, because of the specialist character of the book. But then, the author is not to blame.

During the second half of the fifteenth century, a complex and violent struggle for the English throne erupted between the supporters of the House of York and supporters of the House of Lancaster.

The rise and fall of these dynasties, and the mystery of the fate of the Princes in the Tower, have made the Wars of the Roses the subject of countless novels, plays, poems, and films.

This illustrated, authoritative A-to-Z encyclopedia is written in a clear and understandable style by an acknowledged expert in the field. It provides accurate and readable descriptions of the major battles and events and the principal historical figures and issues involved in the Wars of the Roses.

Very strongly recommended for both school and community library historical reference collections, Encyclopedia Of The Wars Of The Roses by historian and educator John A. Wagner is a thorough and informatively presented historical account of the grueling war of the fifteenth century between the House of York and the House of Lancaster that came to be known as the "War of the Roses". These were two factions of the British aristocracy who shed a great deal of blood in political intrigues and armed confrontations as they strove for the power to rule England. Entries are arranged in "user friendly" A-to-Z format giving detailed information on the battles, historical figures, key events, and more for a prolonged civil war that became a engaging subject for Shakespeare plays and Hollywood movies.

5 out of 5 stars The personalities, events, politics, issues, and battles.......2001-11-11

Arranged in an A to Z format, John Wagner's Encyclopedia Of The Wars Of The Roses is a superbly presented survey of the war that took place by rival factions for the English Throne in the second half of the 15th Century. The House of York fought against the House of Lancaster in a conflict that ebbed and flowed for ten decades before achieving a final resolution. Here are all the personalities, events, politics, issues, and battles that comprised this historic and often bloody conflict from the 1460 Act of Accord, Richard III, and Henry VI, to the 1461 Battle of Mortimer's Cross, the Neville-Percy Feud, and the Tower of London. John Wagner's Encyclopedia Of The Wars Of The Roses is an impressive, very highly recommended, single volume reference that covers the socioeconomic dimensions of the conflict as well as the military aspects of this era of English history.

                                        Book Description

Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.

Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.

Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.

A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10

Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.

5 out of 5 stars Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31

An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.

That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.

I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.

NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27

This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.

The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.

All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21

Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.

In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.

This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.

1 out of 5 stars a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21

A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.

But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)

There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?

These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

This book is good for starters looking to get indepth with the origins of the nations. For the most part I found the book to be helpful in my research, but their is problems with the book with some of the nations I don't agree with. But, it still dosen't take away from the fact that book is still very good, and helpful. I recommend this book to anyone who is intrested. Also check out Steven M. Collins, and Yair Davidiy for further details concering the tribes of Israel if intrested. Once again 5 stars for a very good book:)

It was an interesting book. The differences in races was some waht a suprise. As a believer in the tracing of the tribes of old Isreal, I liked the clarity that is given in the tracing of these peoples. This added to the " Tribes" by Yari Davidiy. I thought is was easy to understand and very educational.

In Search Of... The Origin Of Nations is the first work ever published providing major proofs for the modern identity of nations and peoples whose roots may be carefully tracked back to the ancient Middle East.

Reviewers have claimed that the subject of this book may one day be acknowledged as the most amazing work on the origin of nations and peoples ever written.

The author has spent many years of painstaking in-depth research investigating and pulling together the many complex threads and strands of tradition, linguistic, anthropological and historical fact and detail to assemble the most overpowering anthropological detective work of this age!

With precision, incredible detail and analysis, the author assembles an awesome array of proofs for the true identity of the three major races and the modern nations (the bibliography alone contains over 700 items).

The interrelationships of the peoples of the earth and their destiny based on stunning ancient prophecies are discussed in a pacy but logical style.

Many years have been spent researching the origin of the world's tribes, peoples and races - the family of nations - based on the mysterious Table of Nations found in Genesis chapter ten. Piecing together and tediously assembling the many parts of the puzzle, the strands of information and the bits of data required for an exercise such as this has not been easy for this writer/researcher.

Using a data-gathering and deductive reasoning formula, I have pored through hundreds of books, journals and articles to assemble a work, which is moderate in size but huge in scope. Basing the book on the requirement for biology, genetics and physical anthropology as the chief criteria to ascertain which nations may be identified with the peoples mentioned throughout the Bible, I found that modern racial taxonomy and classification was very close to the Biblical model found in Genesis 10.

Genesis 10 has often been overlooked by modern scholars. Many Bible scholars from previous centuries, have had a fascination with it, but gradually with the advent of humanism and the anti-literal interpretation of scripture, interest in this chapter as the basis for the origin of nations has receded to become almost a taboo subject.

In the 18th century Sir William Jones and J. Bryant wrote on the subject. But the interest in this chapter of God's Word peaking late 19th century with academics such as Rawlinson famous for his Origin of Nations (1878) and Sayce in such books as Races of the Old Testament (1891; 1925). Both showed an intense interest in this key topic. Famous Seventh-day Adventist scholar, Alonzo T. Jones also authored two works on the subject: The Peopling of the Earth (1887) and The Empires of the Bible (vol. 1, 1904). He was obviously inspired by contemporary writers; in turn, others in the twentieth century were inspired by his writings.

Authors such as Dr. Herman L. Hoeh, Arthur C. Custance, Dr. D.J. Wiseman, Dr. John Pilkey, Bill Cooper, J. Simon, and, of course, Ross Marshall of Project Genesis Ten, have continued the research and study of this fascinating science. Dr. Hoeh in particular has demonstrated that history, ancient tradition and authenticised lists of kings assist in tracing various peoples around the world.

Much of the corpus of Genesis 10 research in literature which has been extant for a considerable period of time generally, in my estimation, remained inadequate while large chunks of information had never been written up or explored in much detail.

My focus is primarily historical and anthropological, attempting to find all scraps of evidence, digest them, and then produce a synthesis of all the major finds (while omitting many other minor proofs so as not to overwhelm the reader or clutter up the book).

Since my spiritual awakening in late 1972, I have developed a powerful curiosity about the national origins of all peoples. It became apparent to me that, while some have included the identity of Israel in their theology and literature, almost nothing was said or published about the other peoples and races. It was a pity that this area of identity was not included in overall teachings about God's plan for humanity. In Search of... the Origin of Nations aims to correct this imbalance.

A lot of space has been spent discussing the Assyrians in this book. Why? one may ask. This will become self-evident, but they were a very important and dominant people in the ancient Middle East and impact upon Israel to such a degree, that they must be traced and their descendants identified today.

The identity of Assur is identified; his exploits in the years after Babel; his character, empire and descendants all discussed. After his empire fell, his descendants were driven out of the Middle East and I trace them on their journey to where they reside today.

After going into captivity, most of the peoples of Israel disappear from view - what became of them and what is their future? Why is Israel so important to God and why are they so emphasised in the Bible?

                                          Book Description

This is the first of three volumes on partial differential equations. It introduces basic examples of partial differential equations, arising in continuum mechanics, electromagnetism, complex analysis and other areas, and develops a number of tools for their solution, including particularly Fourier analysis, distribution theory, and Sobolev spaces. These tools are applied to the treatment of basic problems in linear PDE, including the Laplace equation, heat equation, and wave equation, as well as more general elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic equations. Volume I prepares the way for studies of more advanced topics in linear PDE, in Volume 2, and for studies of nonlinear PDE, in Volume 3. The book is addressed to graduate students in mathematics and to professional mathematicians, with an interest in partial differential equations, mathematical physics, differential geometry, harmonic analysis, and complex analysis.

4 out of 5 stars Great PDE book.......2006-09-23

I like this book. Right from the beginning, Taylor uses concepts from smooth manifold theory to obtain results in a coordinate free fashion (on a Riemannian/Lorenz manifold) when possible. At the same time, he will go to coordinates when necessary, or even revert to R^n when stronger results are possible there. As an added "bonus" the book contains surprisingly few errors, or at least I found less than usual, so maybe I'm getting slow!

I didn't find this to be an introductory (as in first year of grad school) level book. The proofs are often given in less detail than those found in the standard introductory graduate texts. Reading and understanding this text requires knowledge of Real Analysis and smooth manifolds/differential geometry at the introductory graduate level. Fourier transforms and distributions are built up from scratch, but the treatment is quick and probably assumes you have some previous knowledge. Note that my opinion is formed after using this book for self-study, so you can probably relax the prerequisites slightly if this book is used as part of a course.

Another point worth mentioning is that the exercises are often quite easier than verifying the individual proofs in the chapter.

Why not 5 stars? I found the book and chapter introductions to be quite uninspiring and not very useful. He essentially lists off the material that will be covered with no thought to motivation. I like to read something about why one particular approach is necessary or better or just different than another approach. Simply listing off concepts to be covered has little meaning if one has no idea what those concepts mean! The discussion of results is also rather sparse, sort of like Rudin.

The author accomplished the goal of presenting this broad and many-faceted subject in a thorough and comprehensive manner. Beginning from the fundamentals of ODE theory to the most sophisticated methods for solving important PDE's of mathematical physics, this series of three volumes comprises all what a modern analyst must know about the topic and much more.

The contents of volume 1 are: Basic theory of ODE; Laplace and wave equations; Fourier analysis, distributions, and constant-coefficient linear PDE; Sobolev spaces; linear elliptic equations; linear evolution equations. Appendices: Outline of functional analysis; manifolds, vector bundles, and Lie groups.

Originally intended for graduate students and working mathematicians, most of the material is suitable for advanced undergraduate courses. Includes excercises for each section and extensive references.
