Book Description
Spurred by the advances in option theory that have been remaking financial and economic scholarship over the past thirty years, a revolution is taking shape in the way legal scholars conceptualize property and the way it is protected by the law. Ian Ayres's Optional Law explores how option theory is overthrowing many accepted wisdoms and producing tangible new tools for courts in deciding cases.
Ayres identifies flaws in the current system and shows how option theory can radically expand and improve the ways that lawmakers structure legal entitlements. An option-based system, Ayres shows, gives parties the option to purchase—or the option to sell—the relevant legal entitlement. Choosing to exercise a legal option forces decisionmakers to reveal information about their own valuation of the entitlement. And, as with auctions, entitlements in option-based law naturally flow to those who value them the most. Seeing legal entitlements through this lens suggests a variety of new entitlement structures from which lawmakers might choose. Optional Law provides a theory for determining which structure is likely to be most effective in harnessing parties' private information.
Proposing a practical approach to the foundational question of how to allocate and protect legal rights, Optional Law will be applauded by legal scholars and professionals who continue to seek new and better ways of fostering both equitable and efficient legal rules.

Customer Reviews:
a solid textbook on Laser for intermediate level.......2007-07-12
Starting from Einstein's coefficients in Chapter 1 for stimulated emission this book tries to cover optical system, resonators, Solid-state Lasers, Gas Lasers and so on. Later Chapters deals with Coherence Theory, Laser Applications including holography and Laser Plasma generation. As a Laser Engineer I recommend this book for its efforts in trying to cover all the subfields in Lasers starting from the very beginning and taking complex issues one by one in a systematic way. Professor Davis surely deserves much kudos for writing materials in a easy and reader friendly way. Overall a very good intermediate level text on Laser!
emphasis on engineering readership.......2007-01-18
Davis offers a comprehensive sweep of the subject of lasers and electro-optics. Lasers are inherently quantum devices, and the text starts with a straightforwardly clear explanation based on elementary quantisation of energy levels. Flowing from this, various types of lasers are described. The historically important ruby laser, which was the first laser ever made. Gas lasers, like the He-Ne, are explained. Along with the Nd-YAG and Argon lasers. Dye lasers, with their tunable ability, are not neglected.
But for electro-optical purposes, it is the solid state lasers that are the most significant. Davis describes the theory of heterojunctions, and how LEDs and lasers can be made and operated, based on these. There is a minimal explanation of solid state band structure. Enough to explain the devices at an engineering level. Though physics students might want to consult a text like Ashcroft and Mermin or Kittel for a more thorough excursion into the physics.
Given the book's title, the text also devotes substantial space to explaining electro-optical elements and the circuits from which these can be made. Switches and detectors are well described.
Not the best lasers text out there:.......2004-06-19
This book is intended for a graduate-level course on lasers. While covering a number of subjects in depth, there are a large number of mistakes. There has been two reprintings with corrections, so I would hate to have seen the first printing. There are many mistakes in the equations (usually easily ferreted out) as well as in the problems. The problems can be very frustrating as they are often as clear as mud. Overall however, the book does do a good job of covering most topics, but if you are looking for a better lasers book, I would go with Verdeyen's Laser Electronics (ISBN:013706666X) or Siegman's Lasers (ISBN: 0935702113)
Recommended Optical Communications Text.......2000-08-24
I highly recommend this text. As a student under Prof Davis in 1995-96 I used his text extensively and found it to be extremely well designed and though in all regards.
An excellent book of basic principles of photonics.......2000-03-24
As a graduate student majoring optics, this is the kind of book that I always want to keep near me. This book combines important topics of laser, electro-optics, and more in a well organized manner. So anyone involved in laser, eletro-optics, and photinics can refer to only one book for the basic principles. The math is not so difficult and every derivation is worked out quite thoroughly. There are many useful examples of latest systems, elements too. However, the early part covering laser is not so detailed as the other laser books, although the second half dealing with electro-optics is excellent in every aspect. I had a quite hard time with Yariv's book of optical electronics, but feel pretty comfortable with this book. Highly recommendable to anyone majoring the field of laser, photonics.

Caution: You will burst out laughing.......1999-05-13
Sit down, let go and enjoy. Fever hits Hana life right on the head. It answers the questions many vistors ask me: What brought you to Hana? What is there to do? What's it like to live in Hana? The characters are zaney, witty, and frightfully real. I thouhgt I was Dic. Now that Fever has caught the Hana experince so well I do not have to write about my similar experiences. As a fellow transplant from the mainland, when asked the questions above I simply and delighfully say, "Get Nicoles book 'Fever' at Hasegawas or Amazon.com. All your questions will be answered." A fun quick read, especially when read at Red Sand beach. Thanks Nicole for the many laughs. A must read before, during or after a trip to the "last Hawaiian village" Hana.
An utter waste of paper stock.......1999-02-01
It's not easy to earn a living In Hana, Maui. The author must have been thinking: "I know, let's write a book to suck in the tourists!" The large print should have been a 'give-away', but I was on vacation and in search of 'local charm'. I will read anything cover to cover: a bad book being superior to no book at all. The drivel in this book tested the limits of my philosophy.
Wonderfully imaginative, endlessly entertaining........1999-01-19
FEVER transports you to an ethereal version of rain-forest reality, where nothing known is really as it seems. Wildly and richly imaginative, yet based on actual experiences, Ms. Dean's account delivers endless, enthralling entertainment. From mystic mind-melders to uptight mellonballers, from pagan pundits to plantation papaya men, this book offers a whimsical island ride you won't soon forget. Buy it!
Great Fun!.......1999-01-11
A fun book to read before & after visiting Hana, Maui -- & to share with friends who have or have not been here. This review is from a resident of Hana.... one of those fortunate few.
It helps to know Hana, but you don't have to........1998-11-10
FEVER by Nicole Dean is not just a wonderfully funny account of a mainland dropout seeking paradise. It is a thought-provoking narrative for anyone contemplating giving up one life style for another. True, it helps to know Hana, Maui, as I do, because it adds to the enjoyment. But this search for paradise knows no boundries. It really doesn't matter WHERE the seeker is going, it's the search that matters. Dean writes of the quest with tremendous wit, which keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously, but the message is there. And thanks to her writing style, we get it! Readers who know Herman Wouck's Don't Stop the Carnival,a delightful account of a Manhattan Island resident seeking paradise on a tropical island, will, I believe, put Nicole Dean in his category. That's high praise for a first-time novelist.

What You See Is What You Get.......2000-04-04
The authors have undertaken a monumental task in attempting to tell the history of various Native American peoples through a geographic prizm. That said, Compton does a reasonably accurate job.
The difficulty lies in the fact that many Native People were semi-nomadic in habit. For example, the Dghelia Sioux people (The Omaha, Ponca, etc) migrated onto the eastern Great Plains from the Ohio River Valley in recent pre-historical times. And the Shawnee, a well-known nation, only settled into their Ohio "homeland" when the original inhabitants--the Miamiwek--felt pressure from across the Appalachians from the whites and Iroquois, and invited the SHawnee to settle in.
Compton has presented recent theories on these and other migrations and eventual settlements with clarity and accuracy, and has done about a good a job as anyone could expect. His coverage of the sedentary peoples (eg-Hopi) is also first-class.
His history has more breadth than depth, but given the scope of the work, that is understandable.
All in all, a very useful resource book.
Customer Reviews:
Disaster Synopsis Book.......2006-03-14
Nice looking book, but I was disappointed that only 2 or 3 pages were given to each disaster. While I recognize the task of covering 100 disasters obviously means large number of pages can't be written for each event, I did want to read more than just 2 pages. This fact was not mentioned in the sales description of the book. There is only one photo (printed, not a photo plate, which are clearer) per event, which was also a big disappointment. I paged through the book when I received it and decided to return it because of these things. Covering disasters from BC to current day also may not appeal to everyone.
Book Description
The world we inhabit is enchanted—every tree, rock, and star, and even "empty" space itself, is teeming with living energy and awareness. And it's all nearer to us than our own breath. Why, then, can't we see it? Because, according to Jeremy Hayward, we are taught not to. And because our cultural conditioning keeps us in denial about the fact that a strictly scientific worldview provides only a partial, and unsatisfactory, view of reality. Letters to Vanessa is the guidebook for a generation caught in the crunch between the hard realities of science and the genuine yearning for an experience of the sacred. In a series of letters addressed to his teenage daughter, Dr. Hayward points the way past the limits of science and shows how we can connect with the magical, multidimensional universe of soul. Along the way he presents the most recent findings of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, new biology, and physics in a most engaging and understandable way. He also provides practical meditation instructions that will enable everyone to reconnect with the joyous reality of ordinary life.
Customer Reviews:
good intentions, but bad science.......2006-02-07
I am a computer engineer and science geek. I have also been involved in meditation and Eastern philosophy for years. So I should be the ideal audience for this book. But Hayward seriously distorts the principles and facts of science to make his mushy mystical argument.
Great letters even if you are not a teen........2001-01-26
Although written in the form of letters from a father to his daughter, this book is a great read for anyone interested in modern physics, neuroscience, and biology and their relationship to spirituality. If the "Dear Vanessa" is removed from the beginning of each chapter the letters take on a universal audience. By writing as if to a teenage daughter, the explanations of advanced scientific concepts and mindfulness practices become accessible to the general reader. Hayward re-enchants our world by showing how something he calls awareness-feeling-energy fills all of space. He shows how changing the way we think about the world can allow us to see the universe as alive and full of awareness. Three of the chapters in the book are what Hayward calls Interludes where he describes meditation practices derived from Buddhism that are aimed at helping the reader make the concepts described intellectually become integrated into consciousness. The bibliography is divided into chapters so the reader can pursue any concept discussed as far as desired. A great book for anyone interested in the topic.
Awesome material at a perfect time...........1999-06-10
While in Atlanta, I happened upon this book. I threw it in a pile and sat down to sip coffee and find somethng to read in my dead time. I glanced through my titles and nothing "grabbed" me. Just then my beeper went off and dead time became live time as I had to get to work for a client...Upon returning to the NY area, I searched for this book just to finish my perusal. After about a two week search i found it. And when I sat down with a cup of coffee this time, I could not believe the information in this book. It is so well put together that the word Vanessa could have easily been replaced by my name! The book is a must read and is just gaining popularity in some circles. I absolutely love this material. In fact I have purchased 16 copies to give as gifts to freinds and relatives! Pick it up! You won't put it down!
Making the Spirit, Matter . . ........1998-08-24
In a series of letters written to his daughter, Vanessa, the author allows the reader to "live within his dream." His own invisible love, a spiritual concept, is vividly explained through the physics of how energy becomes Matter, and all Matter is Energy. From pre-Tibetan Buddhism to current and future theories on the "nature" of quanta, the scientist meets the mystic in language the layman can understand. Since our reality is based on our beliefs and our beliefs are based on our perceptions and our perceptions, in turn, make up what we think - What we "think" to be belief-able makes up what we take to be true and this becomes reality. BUT FAITH is a substance, a belief system born in Trust. Mark Twain said, "Faith is believing when you know it ain't true." Like love, trust is invisible but can be understood to exist as energy in the pages of this book. "Trust me, you'll like it," is an old Sales cliche BUT, If you Trust me, you WILL like it - because you've invested the Energy to believe. Keep Smilin', Mike
Daughter and Dad in a "Drala" World.......1998-08-24
As the father of a 17 year old daughter, I admit this author "peaked my interest" with his introduction of 'Drala energy' on page 17 of, Letters to Vanessa. According to Dr. Hayward, in the pre-Buddhist traditions of Tibet, dralas were the energies which sought, ". . .to harmonize the world and heal the fragmentation of it." By explaining with words in letter form the relationship of energy to matter, the power expressed begins like a vortex to wrap loving arms around his little girl as well as the reader. We read the words but feel the enchanting harmony of the invisible "I'll always be there for you" love shared between a Dad and his daughter. To someone like me who's been trying to explain [to daughters] Einstein's quip that, "Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts," this book was Drala sent. We live in a world where most all that matters is invisible - teaching that to my "material girl," has become much easier now. This is a book for young women on the very edge of adulthood, and for Dad's trying to learn to Let Go . . . Trust me, fellas, none of us ever get very far apart. Please read this book, it's worth it. . . MR
