ASIN: 1860940269 |
Book Description
This book builds on the fluid and kinetic theory of equilibria and waves presented in a companion textbook, Basic Space Plasma Physics (by the same authors), but can also serve as a stand-alone text. It extends the field covered there into the domain of plasma instability and nonlinear theory. The book provides a representative selection of the many possible macro- and microinstabilities in a space plasma, from the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz to electrostatic and electromagnetic kinetic instabilities. Their quasilinear stabilization and nonlinear evolution and their application to space physics problems are treated. The chapters on nonlinear theory include nonlinear waves, weak turbulence and strong turbulence, all presented from the viewpoint of their relevance to space plasma physics. Special topics include auroral particle acceleration, soliton formation and caviton collapse, anomalous transport, and the theory of collisionless shocks.

Advanced Topics on Astrophysical and Space Plasmas
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792345940 |
Book Description
In June of 1996, at the idyllic seaside resort of Guarujá, Brazil, a renowned group of researchers in space and astrophysical plasmas met to provide a forum on Advanced Topics on Astrophysical and Space Plasmas at a school consisting of some 60 students and teachers, mainly from Brazil and Argentina, but also from all the other parts of the globe. The purpose was to provide an update on the latest theories, observations, and simulations of space-astrophysical plasma phenomena. The topics covered included space plasma mechanisms for particle acceleration, nonthermal emission in cosmic plasma, magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in solar, interstellar, and other cosmic objects, magnetic field line reconnection and merging, the nonlinear and often chaotic structure of astrophysical plasmas, and the advances in high performance supercomputing resources to replicate the observed phenomena. The lectures were presented by Professor Mark Birkinshaw of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the University of Bristol; Dr Anthony Peratt, Los Alamos National Laboratory Scientific Advisor to the United States Department of Energy; Dr Dieter Biskamp of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Garching, Germany; Professor Donald Melrose, Director, Centre for Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Sydney, Australia; Professor Abraham Chian of the National Institute for Space Research, Brazil; and Professor Nelson Fiedler-Ferrara of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. As summarized by Professor Reuven Opher, Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, University of São Paulo, the advanced or interested student of space and astrophysical plasmas will find reference to nearly all modern aspects in the field of Plasma Astrophysics and Cosmology in the presented lectures.

Space Physics: An Introduction to Plasmas and Particles in the Heliosphere and Magnetospheres (Advanced Texts in Physics : Physics and Astronomy Online Library)
May-Britt Kallenrode Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540412492 |
Book Description
The phenomena of space physics are complex and their understanding often requires the integration of different concepts. To help the beginner, this book uses a new methodological approach. The first chapters introduce simple concepts of plasma physics and describe where these can be applied in space physics. Subsequent chapters are devoted to more complex observations, interpreted in terms of the concepts introduced earlier. New, more difficult, concepts are introduced as they are required. Thus observations and physical concepts are interwoven to give basic explanations of phenomena and also show the limitations in these explanations and identify some fundamental questions. This second edition has been updated and extended. Improvements include: the use of SI units; addition of recent results from SOHO and Ulysses; improved treatment of the magnetosphere as a dynamic phenomenon; text restructured to provide a closer coupling between basic physical concepts and observed complex phenomena.

Heirs of Anthony Boucher, The: A History of Mystery Fandom
Marvin Lachman Manufacturer: Poisoned Pen Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1590582233 Release Date: 2005-08-01 |
Book Description
This history of mystery fandom is called The Heirs of Anthony Boucher because it was to Boucher's mystery review column in the New York Times Book Review that fans turned, before what Lachman calls "The Fan Revolution" was launched in 1967. In a literary domino effect, Boucher's column led to the first fan magazine, The Armchair Detective, and Boucher encouraged and reviewed it. Boucher's sudden death in 1968 was a shock to mystery fans, but everything they have done since is part of Anthony Boucher's legacy.Customer Reviews:

Drum Songs: Glimpses of Dene History (McGill-Queen's Studies in Ethnic History)
Kerry Abel Manufacturer: McGill-Queen's University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0773530037 |
Book Description
Using a wide range of sources, including archival documents, oral testimony, archaeological findings, linguistic studies, and folk traditions, Kerry Abel shows that previous ethnocentric interpretations of Canadian history have been excessively narrow. She demonstrates that the Dene were able to maintain a sense of cultural distinctiveness in the face of overwhelming economic, political, and cultural pressures from European newcomers. Abel's classic text questions the standard perception that aboriginal peoples in Canada have been passive victims in the colonization process. A new introduction discusses Dene experience since the first edition of the book and suggests how the approach of scholars in this field is changing.

The Private Science of Louis Pasteur
Gerald L. Geison Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 069101552X |
Book Description
In The Private Science of Louis Pasteur, Gerald Geison has written a controversial biography that finally penetrates the secrecy that has surrounded much of this legendary scientist's laboratory work. Geison uses Pasteur's laboratory notebooks, made available only recently, and his published papers to present a rich and full account of some of the most famous episodes in the history of science and their darker sides--for example, Pasteur's rush to develop the rabies vaccine and the human risks his haste entailed. The discrepancies between the public record and the "private science" of Louis Pasteur tell us as much about the man as they do about the highly competitive and political world he learned to master.Although experimental ingenuity served Pasteur well, he also owed much of his success to the polemical virtuosity and political savvy that won him unprecedented financial support from the French state during the late nineteenth century. But a close look at his greatest achievements raises ethical issues. In the case of Pasteur's widely publicized anthrax vaccine, Geison reveals its initial defects and how Pasteur, in order to avoid embarrassment, secretly incorporated a rival colleague's findings to make his version of the vaccine work. Pasteur's premature decision to apply his rabies treatment to his first animal-bite victims raises even deeper questions and must be understood not only in terms of the ethics of human experimentation and scientific method, but also in light of Pasteur's shift from a biological theory of immunity to a chemical theory--similar to ones he had often disparaged when advanced by his competitors.
Through his vivid reconstruction of the professional rivalries as well as the national adulation that surrounded Pasteur, Geison places him in his wider cultural context. In giving Pasteur the close scrutiny his fame and achievements deserve, Geison's book offers compelling reading for anyone interested in the social and ethical dimensions of science.

Perspectives on Ecological Integrity (Environmental Science and Technology Library)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792337344 |
Book Description
Concepts of ecological integrity have recently been proposed to facilitate enhanced protection of biological and ecological resources against the threat of human activities. The promotion of ecological integrity as a basis for public policy and decision making stems from scientists and others concerned about the threats of human activities to ecosystems and species, and from philosophers attempting to derive a more suitable ethic to guide the relationships between humans and the non-human environment. Although ecological integrity has been proposed as a norm for public policy and decision making, the concept is relatively new and therefore the underlying scientific and philosophical rationales have not been fully developed. This book offers a number of perspectives to stimulate and inform future discussion on the importance and consequences of ecological integrity for science, morality and public policy.
