Book Description
Advances in plant cell molecular biology have considerably increased our understanding of pollen-pistil barriers, particularly those operated by incompatibility mechanisms, and, at the same time, demonstrated the complexity and diversity of rejection systems once considered to be relatively simple. This book reviews the impressive knowledge acquired in the last century on the biology, particularly the inheritance and population genetics of self-incompatibility, and presents the new approaches to the study of the structure, function and evolution of incompatibility alleles and the analysis of cell-cell recognition and pollen rejection. The different methods now available for transforming the breeding behaviour of higher plants are also discussed.

In days of yore, educated men and women would avidly follow new developments in the world of science; these days it seems to be too much trouble--relativity was bad enough, but "N-dimensional space"? Fortunately for those of us who have trouble visualizing parallel parking, much less quarks and gluons, John Gribbin is back with an up-to-date primer on subatomic physics. The Search for Superstrings, Symmetry, and the Theory of Everything refers as much to the reader's search for understanding as to the physicist's search for clever theories and experimental evidence to back them up, and Gribbin's prose is up to both tasks.
While meeting luminaries from Einstein to Steven Weinberg, we are treated to clear explanations of what in the world they're talking about, whether it's the "collapse of the wave function" or "high-energy particle acceleration." This material is especially fascinating to those of us without much mathematical inclination, as Gribbin manages to show the state-of-the-art in modern physics without forcing us to go back to school for a few years. (There is an appendix, "Group Theory for Beginners," for interested parties.) Writers like Gribbin are helping us reclaim the time when a little learning was all it took to understand science--and The Search for Superstrings, Symmetry, and the Theory of Everything might just convince you that it's not so hard, after all. --Rob Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Very little information about strings.......2007-04-10
This book was a disappointment, while there is some excellent background on the structure of matter and quantum mechanics, there is very little on the topic of superstrings. In reading through it, I got the impression that the segments on strings were an afterthought, something that needed to be mentioned but in no great detail.
If you need some knowledge of quantum mechanics and the historical development of the understanding of matter, then this book is worth reading. However, if your interest is first and foremost that of the current theories of strings and superstrings, then quite frankly this book is not worth your time and money.
Decent, but outdated and rambling.......2006-05-16
If you are looking for an introduction to the newest theories in astrophysics, this is not the book for you. It has nearly the same brief intro to quantum mechanics as all the other books on the topic, then Gribbin simply wanders from topic to topic discussing weird phenomenon and theories and never really tying them together. He's got a ton of speculation about String Theory, but he never really provides any reason that you should believe in it other than that it sounds really cool.
He is also a bit behind the times (not necessarily his fault), for theoretical physics has (mostly) moved past the particular theories he presents, though they are helpful for understanding the most recent theories.
In all, this is not a book I would recommend. String Theory is beginning to collapse, and there are a few books coming out this year detailing the rise and fall of String Theory. One of these books would probably be a better introduction to String Theory that this one, even if you disagree with their conclusions.
Overall Grade: C-
A good book but not for beginners.......2005-06-14
Yes, perhaps a little slow on the introduction and a drag for those of who had a beginners course in quantum physics or a college physical science background. But the author does an excellent job, in my opinion, of explaining in detail WHY it is that we're searching for SUSY, not just the buzzwords of this science for the impressionable readers. It also keeps a good psychological reality check, and defends certain theories over others; a very honest and unbiased book, and an interesting one too. Thanks!
Overview of particle (not astro) physics since quantum.......2003-11-23
If you haven't had a solid introduction to quantum physics, this book is not the place to start -- Gribbin's excellent earlier book (Schroedinger's Cat) is the place to start. However, if you've read about the Cat and have a decent conceptual grasp, this book is a good update. Gribbin's strength is explaining the concepts, independent of the intense math that's involved in physics. The science is so complicated that this is clearly not an easy task, yet Gribbin is, in my opinion, quite good at bringing the concepts to a level that I can mostly, usually, get a grasp of. On this level, this book covers what's happened in physics from the quantum revolution up to the present. Superstrings, Symmetry, & TOE is really not the best title for it though, because I read the first half of the book waiting for Gribbin to get to any of the title concepts.
I don't think Superstrings is nearly as solid an effort by Gribbin as Cat was. I had a hard time grasping the symmetry concept. I was solid on the review of quantum mechanics (which was well done, but was not enough information to make me suggest skipping Schroedinger's Cat). I was right with him through the spin function, and I was doing pretty well all through quarks. When he (finally!) got to strings, I could understand again. Unfortunately, all through the discussion of symmetry -- which I read and re-read several times -- I just wasn't getting it.
All in all, I think this is a pretty solid book for covering the physics concepts of the last 70 years or so, but I recommend reading Schroedinger's Cat, or at least having a conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics first.
Well written and informative.......2001-08-05
If you are looking for more than " Oh, Golly" physics with some real mathematics, then this will be disappointing, but if you like Richard Feynman type informative lectures that name the names and give an understandable overview, then this is a well written book with history and facts and references. I got is as a gift from a friend who was trying to be of help! It was more help than some of my Google searches on the Internet!

Why does she deny herself?.......2001-02-02
Tula and Rosa are two orphans raised by their priest uncle. Ramiro is a young man who falls for Tula, but she is a tough young woman who refuses him and prompts Ramiro to marry Rosa instead. Rosa is a feeble woman who gives birth to three children before dying. Tula steps in to take care of the children, and then Ramiro asks her again to marry him. Tula refuses one more time, and becomes Aunt Tula. She is the real head of the family, a firm but loving woman. One of the kids, Manuela, adores her and starts becoming a new Aunt Tula. Ramiro, very sad at her refusals, marries the maid and has two more kids. The the maid dies and Ramiro follows. Before he dies, Tula confesses her love for him. Why the hell then didn't she marry him? We are left without a clue: maybe it's because of the stern and restrictive Catholicism of Spain in those times, maybe she's frigid, maybe whatever. But the novel is good and the character is interesting.
History of a woman's self-repression.......2000-03-28
Tula and Rosa, two orphans, grow together educated by their uncle, a priest. Ramiro, a young admirer of both, cannot choose between them. Tula denies her own desires and pushes Rosa to marry him. When Rosa dies, Ramiro declares his love for his sister-in-law, but Tula keeps on denying herself her sexual and emotional needs and becomes the aunt-mother of Rosa's children. Only when Ramiro is dying she is able to declare her love.

Product Description

Book Description
Craving dolphin meatballs? Can't find a reliable restaurant for boiled parrot? Have a hankering for jellyfish omelettes, sows' wombs in brine, sheep's brain pate, or stuffed mice? Look no further than Around the Roman Table, a unique hybrid cookbook and history lesson. A portrait of Roman society from the vantage point of the dining table, kitchen, and market stalls, Around the Roman Table offers both an account of Roman eating customs and 150 recipes reconstructed for the modern cook.
Faas guides readers through the culinary conquests of Roman invasions—as conquerors pillaged foodstuffs from faraway lands—to the decadence of Imperial Rome and its associated table manners, dining arrangements, spices, seasonings, and cooking techniques. With recipes for such appetizing dishes as chicken galantine with lambs' brains and fish relish, Around the Roman Table is ideal for food aficionados who wish to understand how the desire for power and conquest was manifested in Roman appetites.
"There are many misconceptions about the food of ancient Rome that Faas sets out to correct. The result is half cookbook, half history book and is entirely fascinating to both chef and antiquarian alike."—Washington Times

Book Description
In Around the Table of the Romans, Patrick Faas brings to life the Roman passion for eating. More than just a book of ancient recipes reconstructed for the modern cook (though there are over 150 in the book), this book is a portrait of ancient Roman society as seen from the dining table. Faas explores ancient Roman manners, dining arrangements, spices, seasonings, and cooking techniques. He shows how ancient Roman cuisine differs from its present incarnation. Most of all, he brings the ancient Roman world to life in a book that foodies and history buffs will salivate over.

Planning a Roman feast?.......2005-09-13
Are you a teacher and planning a Roman feast for an activity? This book has everything you will need.
A Bit Rambling Yet and Interesting Read.......2004-07-18
Informative, but Whiteside's translation is spotty. Ilaria Gozzini Giacosa's A Taste of Ancient Rome would help clarify and fill in some of the overlooked topics and recipes.
Learn to Cook for Caesar.......2003-05-21
The first half of Around the Table of the Roman's is a discussion of Roman cooking and food. The second half is a list of recipes from various Roman authors. The book has a lot of promise and gives a good overview of what the Romans ate and the role of food in Roman culture. The recipes are given in three forms. First, the original Latin version is give, then a translation is provided. Finally, a more detailed recipe is given that the reader can use to try the recipe at home. The book is interesting, but should be treated as an introduction to Roman diet, cooking, and eating habits. The book was originally written in Dutch and the translation could have been better. However, there are not serious problems with the translation. Overall I liked this book and I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes.
Very Poorly Written.......2003-01-22
This book is filled with misspellings, poorly phrased sentences, and illustrations not explained well in the text. Whatever happened to editing? The subject should have been presented much more adequately. The publisher should be ashamed to release such a poorly-presented work!

Book Description
Decentralization has become a globalized policy: a large number of countries around the world have formulated this policy and many also have implemented it. The policies and the changes at the national level have been researched and thoroughly described and analyzed. What has taken place and is taking place at the grassroots level has not received attention until recently.
The book makes an overview of the world wide economic, political, cultural and educational changes since the beginning of the 1980âs and presents the new type of educational governance. It describes the processes of globalization and how national education systems have responded to these processes. It argues that symbolic world models (for the way of organizing national societies and education) have emerged in international agencies and how these models are borrowed, imitated, imposed and so on, when different countries reform their primary and secondary education.
This book extensively reviews outcomes of educational decentralization using research findings from different parts of the world: Australia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Czech Republic, Sweden, England, Mozambique, South Africa, Senegal, Nicaragua, the USA...
It also presents grassroots cases from different countries against the background of the overall changes in governance philosophy and applications. It reviews literature and reports on decentralization in the wider context of educational restructuring and gives a detailed account for different types of decentralization and their short and medium term impact. Also, it presents case studies from countries in Africa, Europe and Latin America and describes what is taking place at the local levels. Focus is directed towards the outcomes in terms of: parent and teacher participation in school.
Therefore, the book is useful for scholars as well as students in higher education and teacher training.
"â¦I think this book is of great importance globally. It should appeal to policy makers, teacher educators and school administrators around the world"
Dr. Joseph Zajda, Australian Catholic University,
Melbourne Campus, Melbourne, Australia

Pioneers.......2004-11-30
Harold Sherman was a researcher on the subject of ESP, and has written many books in his writing career. He earned his living by writing many football books for kids up to around 1950s. In the meantime, he was using himself as an experiment to research on ESP and power of mind.
He was not born with any unusual psychic abilities, yet with practice and research, he was able to tune his mind to read people's thoughts. I know a friend who knew Sherman in his later years, and said that Sherman could read people's thoughts, make coincidences happen, and several other ESP abilties. Sherman believed that ESP is something we all have, and that with practice we can use it more often in our life.
This book was written in the 1930s, after Sherman did a pioneering long-distance telepathy experiment with Sir Hubert Wilkins. Wilkins went to the North Pole to search for missing Russian pilots, while Sherman stayed in New York. Sherman will daily receive thoughts about Wilkin's feelings, thoughts and conditions, and write them on paper. The reports were submitted to several testifiers of the experiement so that the reports cannot be changed once submitted. There were no telephones, and when Wilkins returned to USA to show his report and diary, an amazing 80% of Sherman's 'readings' of Wilkins adventure was accurate! This was such big news then that it was published in newspapers in those days.
Sherman has good techniques to help you train your mind to do this. And with practice, it gets easier and better. If you are interested, also get his book "You Can Make ESP Work For You", which describes his lifetime of adventures with ESP, which saved his life many times.
Also recommended is Ernest Holmes' "Science Of Mind". It was Sherman who opened up my mind about such powers within our mind, and Ernest Holmes' Science of Mind further strengthens the practice and theories. The difference between Sherman and Holmes is that Sherman believed in minds, while Holmes theory of One Mind which is everywhere at all times(what people call God) really explains how it works.

Very Insightful and On the Mark!.......2002-07-18
Found it difficult to put this book down once I began reading.. Insightful and on the mark, this was a very enlightening journey into the world of profiteering in the public domain.... A MUST READ for everyone interested in learning about the piracy of America...! Buy it today!
Learn to proofread.......1999-04-24
The Piracy of America: Profiteering in the Public Domain is the latest look at the unwise abuse movement and corporate and government damage to the environment. It is a collection of essays edited by Judith Scherff from Clarity Press Inc. (1999) a human rights publisher. The essays are a mixed bag, including both reprints and new material. Some are very good, such as David Orr and David Ehrenfeld's essay on the problem of ecological denial. Others are not so good; John Passacantando's article on climate change is little more than repeatedly claiming that because evil corporations are funding the naysayers they must be wrong. Unfortunately, the whole book suffers from a lack of proofreading. For example, according to the book the average passenger pigeon ate nine bushels of food a day! (Yes kids, you can go out and play. Just remember your hard hats and rain gear and whatever you do don't look up.)
Favorite quotes (Thomas Puzzo, page 231): All that is needed for great evil to triumph is for good to be complacent and not ask questions.
David Orr & David Ehrenfeld (page 225): Denial, however, must be distinguished from honest disagreement about matters of fact, logic, data, and evidence that is a normal part of the ongoing struggle to establish scientific truth. It is, rather, the willful dismissal or distortion of fact, logic, and data in the service of ideology and self-interest.
Belongs on every journalist's bookshelf.......1999-04-16
Learn how corporations completely circumvent the media. Find out more about the "wise use" movement that counteracts the efforts of environmentalists. Read about rent-a-scientists and news pollution. It's all contained in "The Piracy of America: Profiteering in the Public Domain," (Clarity Press, 1999), a collection of searing articles by such authors as David Orr, Conger Beasley Jr., Douglas Trent, Wes Jackson and John Stauber. The piece entitled "News Pollution" by Stauber and co-author Sheldon Rampton is particularly riveting. Both men work for the non-profit Center for Media & Democracy in Madison, Wisconsin, and edit the investigative quarterly PR Watch. They are also co-authors of "Toxic Sludge is Good for You: Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry," and "Mad Cow U.S.A.: Could the Nightmare Happen Here?" The section on video news releases (VNR)produced by PR firms offers a detailed inside look at how these pre-packaged promotions get used as legitimate news by deadline-maddened or budget-strapped TV stations. An excerpt: "VNRs are as much a public relations fixture as the print news release," stated George Glazer, a senior VP at Hill & Knowlton. "In fact, many public relations firms are well into second generation of VNR technology. We use satellite transmissions from our own facilities almost on a daily basis, and wait eagerly for fiber optics systems to allow us to dial into nationwide networks." News Pollution points to databases PR firms keep on environmental journalists. For example, former Wall Stret Journal reporter Dean Rotbart runs a firm called TJFR Products and Service, "which compiles dossiers on his former colleagues so that corporate clients know how to manipulate individual members of the media," according to Stauber. John Passacantando's piece, "How Industry Combats Climate Protection," offers insights into how PR firms are used by the fossil fuel industry to counteract research into alternative energy sources. Tarso Luis Ramos does a fine job explaining the "wise use" movement in his article "Mobilizing Against Environmentalism." This collection, with forward by Thomas Berry, belongs on every journalist's bookshelf.
