Book Description
Drawing on previously unused primary sources, this book paints an intimate and vivid portrait of Palestinian society on the eve of modernity. Through the voices of merchants, peasants, and Ottoman officials, Beshara Doumani offers a major revision of standard interpretations of Ottoman history by investigating the ways in which urban-rural dynamics in a provincial setting appropriated and gave meaning to the larger forces of Ottoman rule and European economic expansion. He traces the relationship between culture, politics, and economic change by looking at how merchant families constructed trade networks and cultivated political power, and by showing how peasants defined their identity and formulated their notions of justice and political authority.
Original and accessible, this study challenges nationalist constructions of history and provides a context for understanding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It is also the first comprehensive work on the Nablus region, Palestine's trade, manufacturing, and agricultural heartland, and a bastion of local autonomy. Doumani rediscovers Palestine by writing the inhabitants of this ancient land into history.
Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece of the history of Nablus with a scholarly approach.......2007-02-14
This book documents the most accurate account of the region I have ever read. Others have attempted to do so but they were short of projecting the Micro and Macro dynamics of the ruling families of the area. Professor Doumani's description and approach gives you an insight to the daily lives, politics, and personalities of the time.
Excellent Work, I do recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Palestine.

Book Description
The Antarctic Treaty, set up in 1961 to provide a means for managing international relations in Antarctica, will be reviewed in 1991. This book considers the question of the region's future with the evergrowing international interest in the area as a source of important mineral resources. In this timely survey, a study group brought together by the David Davies Memorial Institute of International Studies looks at the political and environmental questions raised by the potentially conflicting interest in Antarctica: what are the stresses internal and external, on the Antarctica Treaty system, and can it develop to cope with them? If not, what is the likely political outlook for Antarctica? Together with The Antartic Treaty Regime, edited by Gillian Triggs(CUP, 1987), which describes the components of the Antartic Treaty System, Cambridge offers and authoritative basis for the study of the Antartic Treaty and its future.

Book Description
In the early ninth century, George Synkellos, a monk of Constantinople set out to compose (in Greek) a universal chronicle beginning with the creation of the universe. Synkellos' death prevented him from seeing this ambitious project through to completion, and it fell to a fellow monk, Theophanes Confessor, to complete the narrative from the reign of the emperor Dicoletian up until his own day. The purpose of the chronicle, as Synkellos states on several occasions, was to confirm the orthodox dating of the incarnation of Christ at the completion of the 5500th year from the creation of the universe. In the course of demonstrating this point, Synkellos cites extensively from numerous histories and chronicles from Egypt and the Ancient Near East, some of which are unattested elsewhere. Since the author comments at length on his authorities and predecessors, his work is also a rich resource of information about the origins and development of early Christian chronography. Despite its recognized importance, the chronicle has never been translated into a modern language. The English translation provided here, together with introduction and notes, promises to make this influential and wide-ranging history more accessible to Byzantinists, students of ancient historiography, and specialists in biblical chronology, early Judaism, Egypt, and the Ancient Near East.

Commoners, Tribute, and Chiefs.......2000-05-05
Potter combines findings from ethno-history, archaeology, and anthropology to trace the living patterns of natives occupying the Potomac Valley during the years from 200 to 1700. In particular, Potter uses these findings to trace the Chicacoan political organization, social behavior, and settlement patterns as they changed over time showing how and why the Chicacoans went from being a distinct group before contact with Europeans to moving to new land and merging with two other tribes and becoming the Wicocomoco by the latter 1600s and finally becoming landless tenants living on an English plantation. Potter shows that Chicacoan life (as well as the living patterns of other native groups in the region) was affected by changing subsistence patterns (increasing importance of agriculture), increasing population, conflicts with neighboring tribes, changing climate, and finally contact with Europeans.

A genuine classic of popular scientific writing. Buy it!.......2007-07-15
`Powers of Ten' by Philip and Phylis Morrison and `The Office of Charles and Ray Eames' is one of those non-fiction classics which everyone gets around to buying or at least browsing in the library before they reach the age of forty. In fact, I'm quite surprised to see that the book was copyrighted in 1982, since it seems as if it has been around for decades, easily going back as far as the 1950's.
Part of this impression may be due to the fact that the concept is so simple. The heart of the book is a series of forty-two (42) photographs, or simulated photographs, each showing a view exactly 1/10th the size of the previous view. One thing that confirms the vintage of the book is that the views near the middle of the series, those from near outer space, are genuine photographs from some NASA platform or other.
One similar book that comes to mind is `Flatland', the `fictional' description of a three-dimensional person visiting a two-dimensional world. A similar work, far more whimsical than these two, is `The Point and the Line'. One advantage the geometrically premised works have on `Powers of Ten' is that their underlying mathematical bases are virtually secure for the ages. Not so with our `Powers of Ten'. Even my layman's knowledge of modern physics can spot at least two out of date aspects in the book. The first I spotted was the statement that the largest share of mass in the universe is in stars. Modern theory posits a mysterious moiety called `dark matter', which now explains a lot of facts about astrophysics which were a mystery under the `all mass in stars' point of view. The second out of date perspective is the absence of any fine detail at the sub-atomic particle level. In the early 1980's, the most advanced physics relied entirely on a particle-based paradigm for sub-atomic structures (The last quantum physics advance cited is the hypothesis of quarks). Since the mid-1980s, the theory of choice is based on strings or even `superstrings'. The conjectural pictures at this level know nothing of vibrating strings. The `big' perspectives also don't really do justice to hypotheses about deep space entities such as black holes and quasars.
Still, this is a great classic. If, for no other reason than it is a great tutorial on getting someone acquainted with the metric system of measuring distances, as all steps are in tenths or tens of a meter. On a more general level, this is a great little lesson in the history of physical science, as the book contains a chronology of the discoveries that pushed our perceptions of the world in one direction (big) or the other (small).
Any family with at least one scientifically curious child should own a copy of this little gem!
Powers of Ten -- a Flipbook.......2002-01-08
Charles and Ray Eames give us a photographic tour of the universe we can hold in our hands. Starting with a picture of the dark emptiness of at the edge of the universe, each page brings us closer to our galaxy, solar system, planet, and down to the one power of ten on which we humans live. But then we continue to dive deeper -- skin deep -- shrinking smaller and smaller through the cells, molecules, and finally sub-atomic space of which we are composed... finding the empty space within the atom to be eerily reminiscent of outer space itself. It's an exciting, thought-provoking five-minute journey you'll want to take again and again.
A Wonderful Ride Through The Powers Of Ten........2001-01-23
With a start at 10e+25 meters, from the far end of the universe (~1 billion light years), the book takes 1 power of ten steps downward to the subatomic level, about 10e-16 meters - or smaller than a hydrogen atom. A very good book to get lost in the comparison from one power to the next - be it higher (bigger) or lower (smaller).

Book Description
The Greening of Central Europe evaluates the environmental policies of Central Europe, using Poland and the Czech Republic as examples. John W. Sutherlin recognizes that since the Earth Summit II meeting in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, most states have attempted to incorporate the principles of sustainable development into their national environmental and economic management policies, in turn leading to less pollution and more favorable economic conditions in the long term. However, achieving this goal in the states that emerged from Soviet domination would seem nearly impossible. So Sutherlin portrays the political changes in Poland and the Czech Republic as a foundation for understanding the formation of environmental policy. He then summarizes how well each state has incorporated the principles of sustainable development into their policy-making systems. Finally, he evaluates various environmental measurements, including air quality, deforestation, and public health, to assess the successes and failures of each state. His conclusions provide a mixed result for sustainable development, especially for the transitional states in Central Europe, yet the evidence shows that the "greening" of central Europe has begun.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional work!.......1999-12-31
I have seen Dr. Sutherlin speak in Europe in different conferences over the past four years. This exceptional work reflects a true dedication to undertanding sustainable development and environmental policy making in Poland and the Czech Republic. There is no work in print that captures the research and analysis of Sutherlin. This work should be required reading for all interested in Central European environmental issues.
Concise and well-researched.......1999-10-03
As a member of the environmental movement in Central Europe, I was most pleased to find someone from the West that really understands what has happened in Poland and the Czech Republic since 1989. There is no comparison to what Sutherlin has accomplished in this directly written book. I hope that he follows this work with similar efforts. This book is useful for those in classes, in environmental organizations or those wanting to understand policy making in Central Europe.
Most Important Contribution on Sustainable Development.......1999-08-06
Despite the work focusing on Poland and Czech, this work is useful regardless of geography. Its premise is simple: States that are both democratic AND have market economies can still have sound environmental policy if they accept the principle of sustainable development. That is a lesson for all of Europe and this hemisphere. The data assembled in this work is fascinating and the interpretation of the very technical by the author (whose background is probably the social sciences) is nothing short of remarkable. He has blended the hard sciences and the social sciences together in a way that marks the best effort to have true environmental analysis.
The best book yet on the environment of Central Europe!!!.......1999-04-29
This work takes the perspective that 'sustainable development' is the desireable way that the transitional nations of Central Europe should travel. Then, using information he obtained in Poland and the Czech Republic along with data from various state agencies and the United Nations, Sutherlin analyzes how well each nation's environmental policy has or hasn't worked. Additionally, he uses Western Europe and the U.S. as examples of other manners for making policy. The result is somewhat surprising: both Poland and the Czech Republic are doing well in different areas due to various factors. This is a well-developed, easy to follow (despite the complexity of the subject) work that will be interesting and useful to anyone interested in the environment, in general, or Central Europe, specifically.
