Book Description
This timely Reader brings together, for the first time, key writings on the relationship between law and geography. In so doing, it has fostered the creation of an intellectual forum for scholars and students in related disciplines, who have - until now - been working in parallel, rather than in tandem. Although a recent area of study, the intersection between these fields is becoming increasingly important with the recognition that space is socially produced and that it is riddled with power relations. The chapters in this Reader are organized around geographic scale - local, national, global - and each section includes an introductory essay contextualizing the selections and explaining their contribution. The topics covered include public space, local racisms, property and the city, environmental regulation, state formation and decentralization and international-global legalities. A comprehensive introduction reviews the current state of the field. Representing some of the most provocative and interesting approaches to law and geography by an interdisciplinary group of acclaimed contributors, Legal Geographies Reader will serve as an important reference source to this expanding field.

Book Description
In step with our growing lifespan, dementia is becoming a widespread handicap to the health and well-being of individuals and a burden on human society world-wide. The increasing prevalence of this tragic condition has stimulated an explosion of scientific research in the last ten years, which resulted in numerous profound insights and technical innovations. This timely volume presents both an overall and a detailed overview of the current worldwide knowledge about the neuroscientific basis of dementia. Leading authorities in their fields provide a far-reaching synthesis of all topics in dementia research, including pathogenesis of dementia, neuroimaging of the earliest alterations, potential biological and genetic markers for Alzheimer`s Disease and new therapeutic strategies. Each chapter discusses clinical implications and areas of controversy, highlights the wide range of current and future therapeutic possibilities and indicates promising directions for further research...
Customer Reviews:
Plenty in-depth articles on current Alzheimer's research.......2001-03-19
Audience: Scientists and graduate students in medical, pharmacological and biological research, physicians and researchers in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. Purpose: To give a comprehensive and detailed overview of the current worldwide knowledge about dementia disorders, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Content: The book opens with two articles which deal with the phenomena of membrane lipid signaling, neuroinflammation and neuronal degeneration in AD. The next section, dealing with memory and its impairment, has chapters on long-term memory, amygdala damage in AD, memory in the hippocampus and hippocampal long-term potentiation. Then, there are eight chapters involving the tau protein that aggregates to cause neuronal degeneration in AD and other dementing disorders where neurofibrillary tangles and other tau deposits occur. These chapters include one on transgenic mice overexpressing the human tau who develop a progressive tauopathy similar to frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17, two on tau mutations, one which suggest that the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/parkinsonism-dementia complex of the Kii peninsula is a new form of familial tauopathy, one on a new disease entity senile dementia of the neurofibrillary tangle type, and three on cellular pathology of tau. The next section contain three chapters on dementia related to synuclein. These papers show that alpha-synuclein is a common mediator of many neurodegenerative diseases, now called synucleinopathies (Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, LB variant of AD, multiple system atrophy) and give future directions for alpha-synuclein fibrillogenesis as target for drug development. The role of the presenilins (PS) in amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and beta-amyloid (A-beta) production in AD is next covered in a series of thirteen chapters. These include seven on the presenilins and six on various aspects of beta-amyloid peptide. Cumulatively, these papers give evidence that the accumulation of A-beta peptide deposits (the presumed prime-mover in AD) in the cortex requires cleavage within the transmembrane domain of APP. Gamma-secretase has been posited as the agent responsible for this cleavage, but has managed to elude every effort to isolate and identify it. Four reports published in 1999 appear to be closing in on this long-sought goal. Three of them show that PS-1 is necessary for the cleavage of Notch, which mediates cell-cell interactions in determining cell fate during development. To carry out its signaling function, Notch requires cleavage in its transmembrane domain in a manner reminiscent of A-beta production. The fourth reports on mutations in PS-1 that completely abolish APP cleavage and suggests that PS-1 itself is gamma secretase (since two separate groups in Jan/Feb 2001 have found that transgenic mice lacking the BACE1 isoform of beta-secretase do not produce A-beta and grow to seemingly normal adulthood without unacceptable side-effects, now we know that a promising target for an AD therapy may be the beta-secretase as well). Finally, there are five chapters on the diagnosis and therapeutics of dementia. They comprise phenotype/genotype correlation in familial AD, risk factors and longitudinal studies of at-risk individuals from familial AD pedigrees, biological markers for differential diagnosis, cognitive deficits and functional neuroimaging techniques. One of these articles focused interest on the intake balance of polyunsaturated fatty acids called omega-3 and omega-6, which are not synthesized in mammals. The paper gives convincing evidence that genetic risk of AD might be lowered by the increased omega-6/omega-3 ratio (together with increased vitamin C, carotene and antioxidant levels). The last chapter gives a review of the recent progress of possible future therapeutic strategies. The most promising among these are anti-tau phosporylation (since recent demonstration that the propyl isomerase Pin-1 can restore the ability of phosphorylated tau to bind microtubules and promote microtubule assembly) and vaccine therapy (after a novel and exciting result of immunization of young monkeys, which produced high titres of serum A-beta antibody, almost completely prevented development of A-beta deposition, dystrophic neurites, astrocytosis and microgliosis, while immunization of the older animals also markedly reduced the extent and progression of the AD-like brain lesions). Highlights: The book is cohesive and highly readable. It fully covers a vast and scattered literature on latest progress in dementia research. Limitations: As with any multiauthored text, there is some redundancy. However, overlapping chapters on presenilins and A-beta are quite consistent with each other. Related reading: Two well-established books in the field are Alzheimer's disease and related disorders: Etiology, pathogenesis and therapeutics (Iqbal, Swaab, Winblad, Wisniewski, eds.; Wiley, 1999) and Alzheimer's disease (Terry, Katzman, Bick, eds.; Lippincot Williams & Wilkins, 1999). Before new editions of these books that are expected around 2003 or later, Neuroscientific basis of dementia neatly fits the gap and provide an integrative current view of one of the major medical problems of our time. Book Description
The aim of this book is to inform engineers about the available equipment options for solid/liquid separation, to put these into classifications so that an engineer can make an informed equipment selection for a particular separations problem, and to present applicable models so that meaningful design and simulation calculations can be carried out. Within this context the role of expert systems and computer simulations are elucidated, with many examples showing the nature of calculations that can be undertaken and their significance.
The focus of this book is design and simulation, linking practical aspects of filter selection and design to models that have been proven by industrial practice.
An overall aim of this book is to bring closer together and rationalise both practical information and fundamental knowledge. In doing so, the importance of both must be recognised and the synergy that results from a good understanding used to improve design and simulation.
Book Description
Psychoacoustics – Facts and Models offers a unique, comprehensive summary of information describing the processing of sound by the human hearing system. It includes quantitative relations between sound stimuli and auditory perception in terms of hearing sensations, for which quantitative models are given, as well as an unequalled collection of data on the human hearing system as a receiver of acoustic information. In addition, many examples of the practical application of the results of basic research in fields such as noise control, audiology, or sound quality engineering are detailed. The third edition includes an additional chapter on audio-visual interactions and applications, plus more on applications throughout. Acoustic demonstrations on a CD included with this edition further illustrate and amplify basic and applied psychoacoustic phenomena. Reviews of previous editions have characterized it as "an essential source of psychoacoustic knowledge," "a major landmark ," and a book that "without doubt will have a long-lasting effect on the standing and future evolution of this scientific domain."

Essential for NVH.......2002-06-21
Even though it may not have been his direct intent, the (mostly) empirical information presented in Zwicker's book is essential for understanding how to integrate a customers perception of sound into the design of a consumer product (such as a washing machine or an automobile, for instance). If you are interested in the engineering field of noise and vibration, or wish to make a career out of designing for noise and vibration, this book is a MUST HAVE as a professional reference. Highly, highly recommended.
Be Ready to Get Hammered With Information.......2001-12-04
Zwicker is a major name in Psychoacoustics. He references his own publications in the field well over 100 times in this book. This book is probably the most comprehensive collection of psychoacoustical information I have seen to date. As with all works, it starts with a description of sound and the human audiotory system, and then moves into how the two entities interact and how perception is modeled by this. The discussion is very technical, and he has an average of one graph per page. I do not recommend this book to anyone not interested in the details of how psychoacoustics evolve.
It is also nice that he includes a methods section, as one would do in a technical journal. This describes how the data that he is presenting was obtained, and adds a load of credibilty to the work. Also most of the data presented is empirical, from experiments themselves. The amount of research underlying this work is huge.
My one complaint is the pace varies a bit, but not too bad. Some parts seem fast, others seem slow. Overall however, this is a great book for technical readers. I personally found this book tremendously useful.
Ever wanted to understand human hearing?.......2000-05-21
Eberhard Zwicker was one of the great names in psychoacoustics. This book, written with his student Hugo Fastl, is an excellent introduction to psychoacoustics, and presents a modern account with a great deal of qualitative and quantitative information. The second edition has been updated by Fastl.
I would have liked to see more discussion of the relationships with the psychology of music, but there are now several good books available on this subject, especially a collection of essays edited by Diana Deutsch and another edited by Perry Cook.

Martin Gardner's Annotated Alice is definitive........1996-08-14
Martin Gardner avoids questionable psychoanalyticinterpretations, and instead describes the objects ofCarroll's satire that have been forgotten since the Victorian era. His notes allow us to fully enjoy Lewis Carroll's humor, and to see why Alice was so loved by children then (and by mathematicians now).

A wonderful historical recounting of a forgotten segment.......1999-10-18
This book brings to light some of the other populations that have faced discrimination for centries, the gypsies. Folts has personal knowledge that shines through the horror of Nazi Germany's devastating era. Everyone who is concerned about history repeating itself, should read this book. This is discrimination and scapegoating at its worst. Man's inhumanity to man. The book is well documented and thoughtfully written without sentiment.
Book Description
While much has been written about barriers to women in science, very little work celebrates the wisdom and insights of the women who have risen to the top of their chosen scientific profession. In this remarkable book, the author gathers the personal stories of the select few women scientists who have achieved the honor of election to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences.
Including several Nobel laureates, the group is elite--yet their career profiles and personal interviews have much to say to everyone struggling to overcome obstacles. From their passionate love of research to their struggle to balance the demands of home and career, these women share a great deal. At the same time, these intimate portraits offer widely different insights about how being female has affected their careers.
In these chapters, readers will discover the importance of such factors as persistence, good mentoring, talent, and plain luck. Often, there is a critical moment at which, but for a serendipitous event, even these dedicated women could easily have been diverted from their career paths. The Door in the Dream offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of these inspiring women, providing readers the opportunity to benefit from their personal insights and anecdotes.
In an informal and engaging manner, the author provides a fascinating window into the changing status and representation of women in science in the 20th century. Among the eminent women interviewed:
Mary Ellen Avery May R. Berenbaum Mary K. Gaillard Margaret Kidwell Judith P. Klinman Nancy Kopell Marian Koshland Jane Lubchenco Pamela Matson Cathleen Morawetz Myriam Sarachik Joan Steitz Susan Taylor
This book will be helpful to anyone concerned about women: educators, employers, university administrators, career counselors, scholarship funders, scientific professional groups, established women scientists, and--perhaps most important --young women aspiring to a science career, their parents, and their advisors.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but was expecting more..........2001-11-27
I definitely like the idea behind this book which I thought was to help understand the lives/struggles that the women elected into the National Academy went through. I also liked the way the book was grouped into women born within specific time periods since they seemed to have more in common with each other. But along with all survey books, this one lacked a focus or goal. The author who conducted the interviews seemed very passive and not willing to explore problems the scientists were going through. Wasserman hints at problems/solutions, but I was looking for more.
A real mixture.......2001-09-05
Parts of this book are absolutely first rate -I thoroughly enjoyed the introductory & concluding sets of chapters that "place" the interviews- and some of the biographical pieces are also intriguing and insightful. Unfortunately one gets the feeling that Wasserman has tried to both stretch too far & at the same time go too deep in some areas. In the cases of scientists where we actually get enough material to sense a "conversation" the book cannot be faulted (the interview/section on Ruth Patrick was marvellous for instance), but in some cases we have little more than an expanded extract from some sort of "Great Women & Men in Science" dictionary. Fewer and longer entries would perhaps have served better. This breadth/depth problem is in a sense highlighted by a striking shortage of ecologists (there is the Patrick interview mentioned already & a disappointingly short blurb on Jane Lubchenco) & an absence of behavioral ecologists (what of the likes of Sarah Hrdy etc.?)while at the same time it seems we get lots of biochemist/genetics/& physical science types. A number of authors have noted the greater success that women have had in penetrating the Life Sciences, and perhaps Wasserman feels that this area needs less attention, but a more detailed analysis of WHY things have been better in Biology would be of interest. Other than these complaints I enjoyed the book and will have no problem encouraging my students (female and male alike) to read it.
Many doors,many dreams.......2000-09-03
This book succeeds on so many different levels. Above all, it is a fascinating introduction to the lives of thirty seven remarkably successful women. It is a "good read" for anyone interested in a personal glimpse into many different worlds of scientific discovery. It offers varied templates to young scientists seeking alternative approaches to scientific careers today. It suggests some unconventional wisdom about possibilities for career progress for women and men in any organization. And finally, it provides compelling evidence for employer policies and programs to support employee efforts to balance professional productivity with personal and family commitments.
Wasserman offers a unique perspective on all careers based on the life experiences of women scientists elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. She draws on personal interviews, correspondence and biographic materials of thirty seven women(of a total of eighty six elected women scientists) to portray their experiences, often in their own words. Wasserman undertook this project based on personal questions about her own career, which led from research scientist (PhD chemist)to academic administration to the practice of law. She describes her career path in the context of family interests and commitments as well. For this study she sought to understand what differentiated the lives and paths of these remarkably successful scientists from the paths of others with similar interests and potential. In presenting a consistent set of questions to each of her subjects, she looked for similar patterns and notable differences within this group of women and between this group and others. Her interview material is organized into age clusters and is thus informed by societal characteristics of each cohort's era.
Wasserman's work yields lessons about career success far byond the world of scientific research she depicts. For these women initial career decisions were most often based on interest, talent and encouragement from family plus special teachers at critical juncture points. Yet these initial decisions were then modified and shaped by circumstance and opportunity, for better or for worse. As with each of us, each of these women faced numerous barriers and hurdles as she moved along a path. As with each of us, the path was often unclear. Yet each of these women found her way to make unique contributions to scientific knowledge. Despite barriers and hurdles each was remarkably successful in her scientific career.
Among the barriers and hurdles faced by many of these women, one persists, and that is the dificulty in balancing between professional and personal commitments. Here the lives of these scientists shared challenges similar to the ones faced by men and women at all phases of their professional development. How to balance a strong commitment to work with a strong commitment to family and/or personal life remains a daily struggle for so many of us. It is a struggle we hear about from men and women in corporations, government and academic life as well. It is a struggle anticipated by young people as they embark on their careers and by men and women in mid-career as they live their daily lives and consider their future directions. Each struggle is characterized by much that is personal and unique and much that is universal as well.
In her summary chapters Wasserman highlights the balance between professional interests and personal lives as a key opportunity for organizations to affect lives and careers. She suggests that organizational policy could enhance productivity by becoming more flexible in demands on people and more generous in the resources provided to help support the balance between professional and personal commitments. Her exploration of policy and program implications is especially cogent for today's workforce and in today's workplace.
