North Korean Irrationality Made Rational.......1999-12-06
Making a great deal of sense of all of this is Nicholas Eberstadt's recently released book, The End of North Korea. Eberstandt is a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Research and a visiting fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.
Last month (October 1999) the paperback version of this book appeared in its 175-page format. The original manuscript and charts were completed not quite a year ago so that the perspective is still quite timely. Why this is an important read is because the author skillfully lays out the historical and political context the North Korean leadership is calling the shots. The North Koreans' hidden agendas suddenly become much more visible by Eberstadt's well researched analysis. Actually the North Koreans have been remarkably blunt. The West has done a poor job of listening - more often than not we have just been reacting without recalling prior messages. What Pyongyang is demanding may not be what we wish to hear but they have been clear and consistent.
Upon reading this book, the zigzag patterns of Pyongyang now make a great deal more sense to me. I think any other reader, in government or in business, who is concerned about the current and near-future environment of the Korean peninsula would do well to invest a few hours in reading this well written text.

The New Avenues in Bioinformatics (Cellular Origin, Life in Extreme Habitats and Astrobiology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402026390 |
Book Description
Bioinformatics has ignited the imagination of scientists, entrepreneurs and the general public. At the meeting place of two fast growth disciplines, biology and computer science Bioinformatics is one of the cornerstones of the new biology. It is clearly pivotal to the translation of high throughput projects such the human genome project into useful knowledge. Yet despite all this attention, there is no consensus on what exactly is Bioinformatics. There are several canonical topics, such as gene structure prediction, protein functional classification or structure prediction. The present book explores new frontiers in bioinformatics, such as Glycomics or the computational modeling of genetic processes. We also discuss confounding factors that we find crucial to the development of the field, such as the ability to protect and restrict intellectual property in the field, or the challenges involved in educating bioinformatics users. Finally, we touch upon some fundamental questions, such as what information is and how it is captured in biological systems. By bringing to the readers such a broad spectrum of reviews, we hope to capture the vibrant spirit of this young science and to truly represent the fast pace with which it is still developing.

Lectures On Statistical Physics And Protein Folding
Kerson Huang Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 9812561439 |
Book Description
This book introduces an approach to protein folding from the point of view of kinetic theory. There is an abundance of data on protein folding, but few proposals are available on the mechanism driving the process. Here, presented for the first time, are suggestions on possible research directions, as developed by the author in collaboration with C C Lin.The first half of this invaluable book contains a concise but relatively complete review of relevant topics in statistical mechanics and kinetic theory. It includes standard topics such as thermodynamics, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, and ensemble theory. Special discussions include the dynamics of phase transitions, and Brownian motion as an illustration of stochastic processes.
The second half develops topics in molecular biology and protein structure, with a view to discovering mechanisms underlying protein folding. Attention is focused on the energy flow through the protein in its folded state. A mathematical model, based on the Brownian motion of coupled harmonic oscillators, is worked out in the appendix.
