Book Description
Prolonging North Korea's life may actually increase the costs and the dangers of its inevitable demise.
Customer Reviews:
An extremely myopic view of North Korea.......2002-04-04
I had high hopes for this book that were quickly dashed by a number of glaring problems. Nick Eberstadt is a demographer/economist and he analyzes North Korea solely in these terms. If he were to write a book about North Korean economics, he would probably be capable of writing a masterpiece. As it is, he steps out of his well-troden field and attempts to predict the future of an entire country from a demographic/economic perspective. The hubris of Eberstadt's work is that he ventures to write about things he knows little to nothing about. ...In this book, Eberstadt simplifies North Korea into a one-sided demon bristing with weaponry and a declared enemy of the free world. While this may be true, it is difficult to take him seriously since he analyzes North Korea wholly from the outside. Curiously missing from his book is a history of the internal developments that allowed North Korea to survive even when the Communist Bloc states fell like dominoes in the 1980s.
review of the end of north korea.......2000-04-29
korean peninsula was politically partitioned in 1950's korean war. korean war is often seen as democracy vs. communism, yet it is more correct to say christianity vs. non-christianity. us millitary was sent to korean peninsula to convert korean peninsula to christianity peninsula. all other wars that us millitary was involved in were from amreicans' desire to realize christianity world.
as long as christianity and related religions exist tragedies never end.
North Korean Irrationality Made Rational.......1999-12-06
North Korea is regularly portrayed in the Western media as a lunatic colony running amuck on the world stage. While its strategies and tactics can be (sometimes purposely) baffling, the country is being run by extremely intelligent and very rationale people. However, it is the framework within which the North Korean leadership finds itself constrained in facing the rest of the world that leads to actions and decisions that appear from the outside as being irrational.
Making a great deal of sense of all of this is Nicholas Eberstadt's recently released book, The End of North Korea. Eberstandt is a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Research and a visiting fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.
Last month (October 1999) the paperback version of this book appeared in its 175-page format. The original manuscript and charts were completed not quite a year ago so that the perspective is still quite timely. Why this is an important read is because the author skillfully lays out the historical and political context the North Korean leadership is calling the shots. The North Koreans' hidden agendas suddenly become much more visible by Eberstadt's well researched analysis. Actually the North Koreans have been remarkably blunt. The West has done a poor job of listening - more often than not we have just been reacting without recalling prior messages. What Pyongyang is demanding may not be what we wish to hear but they have been clear and consistent.
Upon reading this book, the zigzag patterns of Pyongyang now make a great deal more sense to me. I think any other reader, in government or in business, who is concerned about the current and near-future environment of the Korean peninsula would do well to invest a few hours in reading this well written text.

From the supplier: Analysts wrongly expect North Korea will collapse due to economic problems and a lack of leadership provided by Pres Kim Jong Il. North Korea's relations with the US have improved since 1993, when the issue of nuclear weapons reached a crisis level. North and South Korea do not get along.

Book Description
Unleashing Rights is a study of the animal rights movement's efforts to advance social reform through the deployment of legal language and practices. The study looks at how prevailing understandings of rights language have shaped the attempt to put forth the idea that animals have rights, and how this attempt, in turn, offers the opportunity to reconstruct the meaning of rights. The book also examines the way litigation has influenced the movement's activities and opportunities for success.
Presented here is an investigation of the legal system through a decentered, cultural approach. Legal languages and practices are viewed as a part of everyday life--constructed, used, and interpreted not only by those who run official legal institutions but also by everyday people with a legal consciousness. Using this approach, the book questions whether the deployment of rights and litigation by animal rights advocates has challenged prevailing legal meaning.
Looking to both the constitutive and instrumental aspects of law, and to how each informs the other, Unleashing Rights finds that the resort to rights and litigation has advanced movement goals and contributed to alternative constructions of legal meaning. The study concludes that despite their many constraints, both rights talk and litigation are powerful resources for those who seek change, especially when used by strategically minded activists.
Unleashing Rights is a book that illustrates the relationship between law, social movement activism, and social change. The book joins the ongoing debate within public law scholarship that is concerned with the effectiveness of legal strategies and languages. The book also speaks to those interested in the general study of social movements and in the particular study of the animal rights movement. With its cultural approach focused on rights language and the construction of meaning, the work will be of interest to the disciplines of law and political science, as well as those who study sociology, anthropology, and philosophy.
Helena Silverstein is F. M. Kirby Assistant Professor of Government and Law, Lafayette College.

Book Description
Bioinformatics has ignited the imagination of scientists, entrepreneurs and the general public. At the meeting place of two fast growth disciplines, biology and computer science Bioinformatics is one of the cornerstones of the new biology. It is clearly pivotal to the translation of high throughput projects such the human genome project into useful knowledge. Yet despite all this attention, there is no consensus on what exactly is Bioinformatics. There are several canonical topics, such as gene structure prediction, protein functional classification or structure prediction. The present book explores new frontiers in bioinformatics, such as Glycomics or the computational modeling of genetic processes. We also discuss confounding factors that we find crucial to the development of the field, such as the ability to protect and restrict intellectual property in the field, or the challenges involved in educating bioinformatics users. Finally, we touch upon some fundamental questions, such as what information is and how it is captured in biological systems. By bringing to the readers such a broad spectrum of reviews, we hope to capture the vibrant spirit of this young science and to truly represent the fast pace with which it is still developing.

Book Description
This book introduces an approach to protein folding from the point of view of kinetic theory. There is an abundance of data on protein folding, but few proposals are available on the mechanism driving the process. Here, presented for the first time, are suggestions on possible research directions, as developed by the author in collaboration with C C Lin.
The first half of this invaluable book contains a concise but relatively complete review of relevant topics in statistical mechanics and kinetic theory. It includes standard topics such as thermodynamics, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, and ensemble theory. Special discussions include the dynamics of phase transitions, and Brownian motion as an illustration of stochastic processes.
The second half develops topics in molecular biology and protein structure, with a view to discovering mechanisms underlying protein folding. Attention is focused on the energy flow through the protein in its folded state. A mathematical model, based on the Brownian motion of coupled harmonic oscillators, is worked out in the appendix.
Customer Reviews:
Reflects Research as of June 2004.......2005-10-28
This book is from a series of lectures given by the author at the Zhou Pei-Yuan Center for Applied Mathematics at Tsinghua University to introduce research in biology to individuals in other sciences.
The first ten chapters are an introduction to statistical physics, but somewhat tilted towards biological applications. The last six chapters cover specific biophysical topics based on the general mathematical/physical principles.
The book introduces an approach to protein folding from the point of view of kinetic theory. This is presented as the driving force of the process. A series of possible research directions is suggested to further investigate these theories.
The book was published in June, 2004 and was up to date with current theories as of that time.

Splendid treatise on mutation.......2004-09-06
I won't write a long review here. Suffice it to say that this is one of the best books on evolutionary theory I have read in a while, and it is a fascinating and detailed look into one of the most fundamental aspects of our living world: mutation... without which there would be no genetic variation and, therefore, no life. Ridley's thesis is that the limit on the evolution of complex life is in overcoming the problem of mutation. This book is engagingly written and convincing. I would think that any evolutionary biologist or geneticist would find this a must read. Truly inspiring.
