Book Description
The important volume summarizes the current trends and developments in the study of bacterial and viral fish diseases. Books on these subjects are few and relevant review articles are mostly outdated. This volume will thus serve as a platform for scientists and aquaculturists to understand the current limitations as well as new developments so that fish health and disease control can advance to new heights.
The first section provides readers with an overview of the bacterial and viral diseases and the current understanding of innate immunity and interactions with pathogens. Section II includes case studies, where three pathogens are presented, namely two bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio anguillarum, the common causes of bacterial diseases in freshwater and marine aquaculture, respectively) and the white spot syndrome virus (an important viral disease for shrimp). These case studies serve as models for the study of various bacterial and viral diseases. Section III presents new platform technologies that are widely used in the study of human pathogens. It aims to spur fish biologists to use modern and cutting edge technologies for their studies so that the study of fish disease can move into the mainstream and focus on the basics. The final section is on marine biotechnology, discussing biotechnology products that are urgently needed for the aquaculture industry spin-offs from basic research, including diagnostics, immunotherapy and vaccine development, and the use of probiotics.

Book Description
Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg continues his masterly exposition of quantum field theory. This third volume of The Quantum Theory of Fields presents a self-contained, up-to-date and comprehensive introduction to supersymmetry, a highly active area of theoretical physics that is likely to be at the center of future progress in the physics of elementary particles and gravitation. The text introduces and explains a broad range of topics, including supersymmetric algebras, supersymmetric field theories, extended supersymmetry, supergraphs, nonperturbative results, theories of supersymmetry in higher dimensions, and supergravity. A thorough review is given of the phenomenological implications of supersymmetry, including theories of both gauge and gravitationally-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Also provided is an introduction to mathematical techniques, based on holomorphy and duality, that have proved so fruitful in recent developments. This book contains much material not found in other books on supersymmetry, some of it published here for the first time. Problems are included.
Customer Reviews:
Defective Hard Cover.......2007-01-04
The whole current production run of this book has a defect. A glue is bleeding through on the inside of the hard cover fold, front and back. This does not seem to affect the structural quality of the book and is not visible from the outside. If you need this book and get it with this defect, don't bother trying to exchange it.
Once again, great book.......2005-03-26
Finding good introductions to supersymmetry can be difficult. Most introductions concentrate on N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions, and there the superfield forumlation can be useful. However, when you go to N=2 supersymmetry (e.g. when considering theories in five or more dimensions), component fields can be better. Many times it's a matter of taste. For those cases, you have to go to review articles. Anyway, Weinberg concentrates on N=1 4D supersymmetry and supergravity using the superfield formalism. However, he ventures into the N=2 strong-weak coupling results of Seiberg and Witten, which are now a fundamental part of (supersymmetric) field theory. The text is, as the previous volumes are, a fantastic resource for learning the subject, and as a reference (for things like gravity- and gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, as well as the minimal supersymmetric standard model, which are open areas of reserach). As for all modern areas of research, the body of knowledge is stacked higher every year; but the topics covered here stand as solid fundamentals of supersymmetry. For more advanced topics, one is forced to go to the recent literature.
A self-contained treatment of the subject.......2000-04-20
If the two first volumes of "The Quantum Theory of Fields" were considered masterpieces in a modern and original presentation of the basics of quantum field theory and its penetration in the recent development of particle physics, with the machinery of spontaneously broken gauge theories, the new volume embraces the wide subject of supersymmetry in Weinberg's typical style, which always means a self-contained treatment of the subject, from its foundations and motivations, to its most recent application as a possible scenario for new physics beyond the Standard Model.
A complete review is published in CERN Courier, May 2000
Weinberg Keeps the level!.......2000-04-07
Great book, contains a lot of material, will be useful to many as a reference on supersymmetry for years to come. Highly Recommended!

The setting is New York's Little Italy in the 1950s -- a community closely knit by gossip and tradition. This is the story of an extraordinary family, the Santangelos. There is Joseph, the butcher, who cheats in his shop and at pinochle, only to find the deck is stacked against him; his mother, Mrs. Santangelo, who sees the evil eye everywhere and who calls on her saints; and Catherine, his wife, whose determination to raise a modern daughter leads her to confront ancient questions. Finally, there is Theresa, Joseph and Catherine's daughter, whose astonishing discovery of purpose moves the book toward its unpredictable conclusion.

The Search for Miracles in Everyday Life.......2006-08-16
Although, it took me about 30 pages to really get into the story, afterwards I couldn't bear to put it down. It is not a sad tragic book, as a previous reviewer has suggested. Instead it's a beautiful novel that captures the heart's search for miracles amidst our ordinary lives. Prose really brings this family to life, and for me they will stay forever in my heart. This one of the best novels I have ever read.
Depressing.......2005-08-27
I kept waiting for something happy to happen to this family but it was just one miserable event after another. It didn't even end happy. I couldn't pass it on to another reader as I usually do --- so depressing.

Great Resource for the Medieval History Buff.......2000-04-01
From Abd al-Rahman III to zygian, this book is a wonderful resource of people and terms regarding ancient and medieval warfare up through the 1500's. It lists battles and wars, heroes, great commanders as well as ordinary fighting men. Some of the more important subjects are detailed in longer, separately boxed articles. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is due to its lack of illustrations. Otherwise, a great book.

Book Description
'Die if you must, but never kill' was the injunction of the enlightened leader of the Brazilian movement to 'civilize' the Indian population in the first part of the 20th century. Years of exploration and exploitation of the Amazon's resources had revealed that those tribes living in the interior would need somehow to be brought into the modern world. Hemming describes the slow process of exploration, contact, their customs and practices and, disturbingly, their almost immediate decline on meeting modern man. He describes too, the change of heart which has led to a renaissance of tribal culture. It is heartening to learn finally that there are as many as 40 tribes still living in the Amazon forests-protected.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the wait!.......2005-10-28
I think it's been about 18 years since I bought 'Amazon Frontier' by John Hemming, the second book in his trilogy charting the history of contact between the indians of Brazil and the invaders from Europe. Since that day I've been eagerly awaiting the hoped for final book. In brief 'Die if You Must' does not disappoint at all. It is clearly well researched, factual with a strong dash of humanity and crammed with stories and information that thrilled me, saddened me, horrified me and ultimately left me with feelings of hope. The accounts of first contacts with hitherto unknown, understandably wary or hostile people are incredibly intense and I found it easy to imagine the mutual terror and excitement felt by both the indigenous nations and the people seeking to contact them. Stories of tribal revitalization and resistance in the face of seemingly unsurmountable opposition are great to hear. We hear tales of honour, shame, morality, courage, grief and guilt in the very personal accounts of people both indigenous and neo-Brazillian in the wider scope of the book. It's a shame that like so many other pages in history, that of the indigenous peoples of Brazil is one that is sadly neglected by the media and writers alike. Thankfully there are still people like John Hemming determined enough to bring their stories and histories to a wider audience. A fantastic book, detailed maps and information, I could go on and on. Best piece of non-fiction I've read in years. Incredible!
Book Description
Galileo. Newton. Darwin. These giants are remembered for their great contributions to science. Often forgotten, however, is the profound influence that Christianity had on their lives and work. This study explores the many ways in which religion -- its ideas, attitudes, practices, and institutions -- interacted with science from the beginnings of the Scientific Revolution to the end of the nineteenth century.
Both scientists and persons of faith sometimes characterize the relationship between science and religion as confrontational. Historian Richard G. Olson finds instead that the interactions between science and religion in Western Christendom have been complex, often mutually supportive, even transformative. This book explores those interactions by focusing on a sequence of major religious and intellectual movements -- from Christian Humanist efforts to turn science from a primarily contemplative exercise to an activity aimed at improving the quality of human life, to the widely varied Christian responses to Darwinian ideas in both Europe and North America during the second half of the nineteenth century.
Customer Reviews:
Equal Footing.......2007-01-05
Olson is well qualified to write on the history of science and religion, having published at least two previous books (Science Deified and Science Defied, vols. 1 and 2). I enjoyed those books, but this one is even better. Packed with interesting details, well researched, and well written, it maintains a calm, balanced historian's perspective. In particular, Olson uses broad historical scholarship to demonstrate the range of religious and other cultural responses to the advance of science -- everything from the typical images of irrational resistance to the eager adoption of scientific knowledge as a SOURCE or DEFENSE of religious ideas.
A bumpy ride.......2005-09-10
If God doesn't exist, one doesn't lose much by belief in God; however, if God does exist and one doesn't believe, the cost can be dramatic. Therefore, one should believe in God, for the odds are then in one's favour. This is sometimes called Pascal's Wager, after the dissident Catholic physicist, mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal. It has been argued that Pascal introduced game theory in order to help prove God's existence, or at least justify a belief in this. This is but one story highlighted in the history of the rocky relationship between science and religion from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the last century.
Often when one discusses this issue, a good historical starting point is Copernicus, who was the first major astronomer since classical times to `demote' the favoured position of the world to being but one of several planets orbiting the sun; the demotion of the sun from being the centre of the universe would come later, but the implication was all too clear from the start. This scientific upheaval coincided with political and religious unrest in Europe, and in a world where the idea that church and state would be separate is not even a distant dream, certainly the separation of the natural sciences from theology, the `queen of the sciences' was inconceivable.
The mistrust between science and religion persists to this day, continuing in its strongest vein the arguments against the Darwinian Theory of Evolution (even though the Theory of Evolution has itself `evolved' from the time of Darwin's observations and publication of `The Origin of Species'). There are some who try to assert one over the other - this happens both with scientists over religion as with religious people over scientists. There are others who look for an arrangement of `respectful noninterference' - scientist Stephen Jay Gould is quoted here as saying, `I do not understand why the two enterprises should experience any conflict.' He argues for a `non-overlapping magisteria' that deal in utterly different realms of human experience.
Author Richard Olson argues that neither the conflict model nor the non-engagement/disjunction model reflect the reality of the historical situation in total - there has been a strong traditional of religious institutions supporting scientific endeavours. Olson's purpose in this volume is to examine the areas of conflict and the areas of cooperation, taking out some of the invective and seeing the situation in a more objective sense; Olson's purpose with this series is to give the issue a more global sense, examining not just the interplay of Christianity and science, but other religious traditions at different historical periods, too.
This volume covers issues beginning with the time of Copernicus and Galileo, continuing through times of continental and English scientific awakenings (Descarte, Pascal, Newton). He then looks at some of the scientific ponderings on religious matters, including philosophical and anthropological studies by figures such as Kant, Hegel, Schleiermacher and Feuerbach. He concludes with chapters on geology and biology, as these have some of the dating issues that seem to be so much at odds with certain religious interpretations in the modern American arena today.
Beginning with Galileo and ending with Darwin, Olson frames the history with what he calls `the most notorious episodes in the supposed ongoing conflict between science and religion,' but states that even from his brief description of each, the issues are far more complicated than those who would look for simple condemnations can reasonably hold. The complex landscape of this relationship, not unrelated to the larger framework of social, economic and political upheavals and restructuring during this time, leads to a very rich and interesting topic for study.
Olson includes excerpts from many primary sources, including the writings of Richard Hooker, Robert Boyle, David Hume and John Draper. He has an extensive annotated bibliography (a great feature of Greenwood Guides), and a useful index. This is a good text for providing worthwhile information and historical context to current debates and conversations.

Book Description
Environmental quality management is seen as a competitive strategy that could help a firm improve its bottom line. It is argued that being environmentally correct is good business that can provide competitive advantage to the firm in the long term and help it to survive and remain in business. To achieve environmental quality, top management must take the lead and refocus its objectives by redefining its customers. Rather than a focus only on "direct" customers who are consumers of the product, emphasis should be on the stakeholders of the environment since they can potentially influence the cost of doing business. The book starts by tracing the relationship between technology and the environment. Clearly, the quality of life we enjoy today is, to a large extent, a result of technological advances. However, environmental pollution is a byproduct of such advances and has contributed in declining the quality of life. Sustainable development is increasingly seen as a way of both maintaining technological advances and environmental quality. However, many have argued against sustainable development without looking at its long-term goals and its potential of helping a business improve its bottom line and competitiveness. Clearly, there is a need for strategic planning in order to remain competitive through environmental quality planning. A corporate environmental quality model is, therefore, needed. Environmental quality management can also benefit from developments in the total quality management area. A great deal of attention is focused on how this could be achieved by adopting tools from total quality management, establishing environmental quality award programs, and conducting environmental quality assessment. The book concludes by focusing on the needs to conserve the earth's limited natural resources and discussing some of the major environmental laws in the United States designed to protect the environment.

Book Description
In this book, the story of how IKEA and its paper producers struggled to solve the problem of creating environmentally friendly paper constitutes the foundation of a discussion of technological development. Through a detailed analysis of the case-study, the authors demonstrate the necessity of including social, technological and economical factors when dealing with such issues.
Focusing on the interactive aspects of commercial and technological development, they examine how new solutions are developed and shaped in relation to the different companies and organizations involved. They investigate resources in terms of how they are related and built into other resources through historical and contemporary interaction processes. Their overall emphasis is on dealing with the issue of how different, closely and distantly related companies and organizations are affected when resources are developed.
