Just Cause as the union would have it........2006-03-21
No employer should ever accept the "Seven Tests" as the standard for just cause; it is the arbitral equivalent of "reasonable doubt" and much too great a burden. Many public employers have foolishly incorporated this standard into their rules, their training, and even into their labor agreements. If you're in charge, eliminate any reference to it. Most experienced arbitrators will not apply this standard unless it is articulated in the agreement or one party, usually the union, proposes it and the other accedes. For a management representative in collective bargaining and labor arbitration the Seven Tests is at best a know your enemy course. It gets the two stars because it is informative and well written, just wrong.
seven tests is a must have.......1998-03-01
this book is excellent for practicioners, and individuals who serve on boards of adjustment, or merit system grievance panels.

Book Description
This volume provides the first comprehensive look at a pivotal new technology in integrated circuit fabrication. For some time researchers have sought alternate processes for interconnecting the millions of transistors on each chip because conventional physical vapor deposition can no longer meet the specifications of today's complex integrated circuits. Out of this research, ionized physical vapor deposition has emerged as a premier technology for the deposition of thin metal films that form the dense interconnect wiring on state-of-the-art microprocessors and memory chips.
For the first time, the most recent developments in thin film deposition using ionized physical vapor deposition (I-PVD) are presented in a single coherent source. Readers will find detailed descriptions of relevant plasma source technology, specific deposition systems, and process recipes. The tools and processes covered include DC hollow cathode magnetrons, RF inductively coupled plasmas, and microwave plasmas that are used for depositing technologically important materials such as copper, tantalum, titanium, TiN, and aluminum. In addition, this volume describes the important physical processes that occur in I-PVD in a simple and concise way. The physical descriptions are followed by experimentally-verified numerical models that provide in-depth insight into the design and operation I-PVD tools.
Practicing process engineers, research and development scientists, and students will find that this book's integration of tool design, process development, and fundamental physical models make it an indispensable reference.
Key Features:

Customer Reviews:
Very clear and concise book.......2007-10-09
I used this book for an introductory Physics class and it was very helpful in supplementing my professors lectures. There are some really good pictures and diagrams to help in understanding various principles. It was very clear and concise. The algebra was more helpful than any other algebra book I've had, however the author did cut some corners in procedures which made it a bit hard to follow at times.
A student who loved this book.......2007-08-21
This book was wonderful, and I read it from cover to cover. Like some other reviewers, I also think that most readers would benefit from some more examples of problem-solving in the text. I didn't personally find that troublesome, as I learn more effectively when I have to work at figuring it out myself. Although, it would have gone much faster with more examples. I took calculus in college, yet I took the algebra-based physics courses, as the calculus-based courses were taught by poor instructors. I absolutely loved this book and learning about physics. The course was at 7:30 am (unavoidable) and since the instructor followed the book so carefully, I stopped going to class since it was so early. I was able to learn enough from this book alone (I would take notes on the chapters) that I could successfully complete the problem sets and take my tests and got A's both semesters, and it wasn't an easy class. I know that if we'd been using a lesser book, there's no way I could have learned all of that physics by just reading a book, as most books don't explain stuff nearly as well. I would have had to go to my early class, and probably wouldn't have understood anything! Yay for this book - it taught me stuff!
p.s. For all of you reviewers complaining about the lack of calculus: umm, it would be kind of unfair if calculus was in a book for an algebra-based physics class (of which there are many taught, even to science majors). these classes don't have calculus prerequisites most of the time. I know calculus, but not everyone who wants or needs to learn physics does.
A required text.......2007-07-21
I purchsed this book because it was required for my general physics class. According to my physics professor and personally trying to follow the process of problem solving, Cutnell and Johnson falls short. The sample problems lacked "showing work" and graphics to help a student absorb the sequence of problem solving. Their methods seem more elementary than the higher level expected in a college environment.
Physics Masterpiece.......2007-03-08
I have seen some that like this book and others that claim without the Calculus, its not worth much. I liked the book from the standpoint that the concepts were the clearest I have seen ever! For example on quantum physics, Chapter 30, he explains exactly the four quantum numbers and how they relate to Bohrs theory of energy levels and contrasts them. You can use this knowledge for chemistry, quantum physics or electrical engineering. Its important to get somewhat of a hold on the terminology, some history, and what your trying to accomplish. I kinda felt like a well prepared high shcool student or first year college student could do the problems; and I really think this is the aim of the book. Alot of chapters cover alot of different material and so its a good refresher or starter before going much deeper into Calculus based physics books, besides Calculus is very much an extension of algebra anyhow. I use the book a first source on a subject to get a feel for the subject, then move up to more advanced mathematics.
This book is utter crap........2006-09-28
Okay.
No student solutions manual. So good luck reasoning you way through the problems at the back of the book. No calculus, which actually makes things much simpler. The examples are not representative of the problems in the back of the chapters. Cumbersome algrebraic formulas that are not necessary if just a tad bit of calculus was employed. A waste of paper. Too bad universites use this, as the authors are obviously rip-off artists not at all concerned with the quality of their text, which is in shambles.
Customer Reviews:
Very poor instruction text........2007-01-08
Book glosses over difficult subjects while offering little to no example support. Questions and problems are worthless in applying subject material and draw too heavily on non-requisite material. The authors seem not to care about helping students get a grasp on the material. I am a graduate student with a heavy science background and this book intended for a 100-level course is by far the worst example of useful text ive ever encountered. Combined with sloppy in-class instruction it is a recipe for failure.
a waste of money.......2006-05-11
what a waste of money!.. I should not have bought this book. There is only about 10% of the solution of the exercise from each chapter, it won't help you learn anything. There are still 90% of the hard exercises that you cannot do because it's just too hard and no hint from this manual at all.
I suggest you NOT to buy this book, but seek help from your instructor or tutoring center.
adeel ahmed .......2005-01-24
this book is good. but i contradict to the review of one of the preson because writer just skip some of the chapters and the questions to check the mentality level of the student.so i think this book is good...
Disappointment.......2004-05-19
If any word comes to mind having seen this accompanying solutions manual it is sheer disappointment. The biggest problem is that it skips problems. Although student manuals are supposed to only cover the odd numbered or even numbered problem, this manual decides to depart from that convention and only covers half the odds, and sometimes it even skips whole chapters. Not only that, it fails to answer the "Questions" and "Multiple Choice" questions within the text. Avoid this manual and the textbook itself if you can.

The Periodic Table
ASIN: 1565846451 |
Book Description
The Holocaust survivor, writer, and scientist Primo Levi, in his own words. Over the course of more than twenty-five years, Primo Levi gave more than two hundred newspaper, journal, radio, and television interviews, speaking with such varied authors as Philip Roth and Germaine Greer. Marco Belpoliti and Robert Gordon have selected and translated thirty-six of the most important of these interviews for The Voice of Memory. We recognize the familiar voice of Levi's masterpieces, from The Periodic Table to The Drowned and the Saved. But we also see a fuller, more varied, and more complex picture of the writer famously shrouded in his past. There is Levi the Holocaust witness; the writer; the chemist; the intellectual; the political polemicist; and the atheist and Jew, holding onto his Jewish culture while rejecting the symbols of a faith he could not share. Levi emerges in a rich, contradictory, and essentially human light--he was a classic figure out of place. As he put it, "I am an amphibian, a centaur. . . . I live with this paranoiac split." Levi's status as perhaps the most important of the survivor-writers of the Holocaust is enhanced still further by his many voices speaking in this remarkable book.
From The Voice of Memory: "Survival in itself proves nothing; as someone who has survived I do not feel in any way either a hero or a resister. I am at peace with myself because I have borne witness, because I kept my eyes and ears open so that I could tell the story of what I saw truthfully, with accuracy. . . . Even today, after so many years, I have preserved a visual and acoustic memory of my experiences there that I cannot explain. . . . For some reason that I cannot fathom, something anomalous happened to me, almost an unconscious preparation for the task of bearing witness."
Customer Reviews:
More than you've read before.......2007-09-03
The editors point out that talking - giving interviews, speaking in schools, etc. - was almost a third career for Levi, after his work in SIVA and as a writer. The interviews included in this collection show what a good talker he was.
Most important, perhaps, there is a good deal here that does not appear in Levi's better known works, and which rightfully cause us to think more deeply about the complexity of his thought and life. For example, his conclusion in _The Drowned and the Saved_ that "the worst survived; that is, the fittest; the best of all died," has become an archetype of Levi in his last years. Readers may be surprised to read that in 1986, as he was completing _Drowned and Saved_ , Levi also said: "To be a mensch was a factor in survival," although "not every survivor was a mensch." Fortunately, perhaps, Levi also said that year (in his interview with Philip Roth), "Please grant me the right to inconsistency."
In granting Levi the right to inconsistency we honor him most of all. No one described better than he how quickly human complexity becomes oversimplified. This book is a valuable antidote to the ways that has happened in the story most often told about Levi himself.
Interviews with one a great voice of conscience .......2004-10-18
Primo Levi is one of the great literary witnesses of the Shoah. He is also a remarkable literary figure, and the self- described centaur who is composed of a scientific, work, chemist side, and a literary, poetic side. These interviews in which he discusses the Shoah( The Holocaust) his experiences, and his witness, his writing, his relation to his Jewishness, his relation to many beloved writers of his enriches our sense of the man and his work. His calm reassuring moral voice is the voice of one who has seen much and been able to tell its story. At the end of the interviews there is a sense of weariness , and a sense of having said it all. There too is a feeling that the younger generation no longer can really sense what he is saying, as the younger generation could after the war. Levi is a truly poetic and deep soul, but exact as a scientist and a therefore seemingly a most reliable witness. His finding human dignity in simple work is another major theme of his work and life. And his modest, practical and realistic answers ( for instance to the question of why he did not distribute food found and made at the point of liberation to three thousand prisoners when he was with ten who ate the food and were kept alive by it) shows his awareness of his own human limitation and fundamental decency.
One caveat. The very leftist interviewers in the Jewish section seem to go out of their way to make Levi criticize Israel for its 1982 effort to stop terrorism coming at it from Lebanon. Levi is critical of Israel but only to a certain point, and does not fall into the trap of condemning the Jewish state. After all he knows what it is to be attacked as a Jew and he understands that the Jewish state is fighting for its survival.
All in all this is a wonderful set of interviews with one of the great voices of conscience of the twentieth century.
Astonishing, hopeful then crushing in its finality.......2002-05-08
Primo Levi{of Blessed memory], was one of the great writers of the past half century. Memoirs{survival at Auschwitz},fiction{the monkeys wrench,If not now, when] essayist[The Drowned and the saved, his magum opus} and Reawkenings, his description of life from the liberation of the camps until he finds his way back to his beloved Turin, Italy[where he lived ,save those years in the camps, all his life. A chemist by trade, amy believe his best work to be THe Periodic Table, whre he begins each "story" named after one of the elements. I have read all of Mr. levi, and he is one of the few, very very few, writers or people that I hold in awe.I have two earlier collection of interviews that he gave, though none carries the sheer inclusiveness of this collection. These interviews take place over a 26 year period, and are grouped into specific catergories.Part 1 is ENGLISH ENCOUNTERS,interviews in Englan, with English new agencies or with English writers. Part 2 isLIFE,interviews about Mr. levis life.Part 3 is BOOKS, interviews regarding Mr. levis published works.Part 4 is LITERATURE and WRITING,interviews regarding the art and craft.Part 5 is AUSCHWITZ and SURVIVAL,a group of interviews and one essay, the preface to IF THIS IS A MAN, what is my favorite non fiction among Mr levis work. Part 6 is JUDAISM and ISRAEL,a series of thoughtful, painful hopeful interviews on the subject, perhaps all the more relevant and poignant due to the recent neverending hatred going on there on both sides. How i wish to hear Mr levi's calm gentle words on the current state of things. The astonishing thing that I carried from these interviews was Mr Levis lack of bitterness or rancor. The coda, of course is that Mr levi commited suicide in 1987,at last a victim to the HOLOCAUST which he so valiantly fought to memory. At lifes end, he found himself forgetting details of his life{early alzheimers?} and was forgetting his time in the camps, was forced to read and re-read to remember what he had just read. In the drowned and the saved,he speaks of the growing movement to de sacralize the holocaust, to downplay its uniqueness, and how the guards at the capms would taunt him by tellig him"no one will believe you, or remember." Thanks to people like Primo Levi, that will not happen. A brillaint absolutely essential book by a good and great man.HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

Going to see the Great Father.......2006-06-04
This is a fascinating account of the numerous Indian delegations to (mainly) Washington, DC, over the course of more than a century (1800-1900). The first Indian delegation occurred in 1710, when four Mohawk chiefs (known as "The Four Kings") were brought to England for a month-long visit and a meeting with Queen Anne. The Indians were the hit of London and drew crowds wherever they went. During the American Revolution, Indians often visited George Washington at his headquarters, as the Americans tried to keep the natives friendly and neutral.
After the country gained its independence, inviting Indian delegates to Washington, DC, became a general policy - a policy that had psychological implications as well as diplomatic purposes: Washington leaders wanted the Indians to see the power and might of the whites in the hope that it would discourage the thought of uprisings. Indian delegations were often treated as visiting royalty might be treated, and left laded with gifts and tributes. (Of course, like most people or groups up against governmental bureaucracy the Indians also left Washington with little of substance gained.)
Viola, rather than just relating one visit after another, arranges his information in chapters by themes: visiting the Great Father, financing the delegations, Indian life in Washington, diversions, etc. This thematic presentation is much more interesting than a straight chronological one would be. The book is well written and thoroughly researched, and is well illustrated, too. It's an engaging and highly informative look at a rarely studied topic in Indian-white relations.

Less speculation, more facts ... .......2006-04-02
This is a must-read for anyone wondering "what it's all about". Science is Ancient ... not new! This is a realization only made broadly accessible in the last few hundred years, with discoveries in both archaeology and other sciences. Really, though, this is "The Mystery" behind so many others - mythic, religious or otherwise. Most other books in the genre engage in a lot of speculation, trying unsuccessfully to identify specific cultures / societies at work behind these ancient mysteries... Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria etc. Tomas' breakthrough is simply to stick to the many many many facts proving that science is, indeed, probably older than religion. He lets the facts speak for themselves, without overreaching, and in doing so makes a HUGE contribution to the emergent process of reclaiming our lost heritage - in fact, not just in literature.
So crazy it must be true!.......2005-01-16
My father had this book hidden away in one of our storage closets and I found it while digging... He said it was all crap, but I'd beg to differ! I sat down and read it in one afternoon. Andrew Tomas presents so many ideas that, if you really take the time to think about it, coincide perfectly with current scientific knowledge. He makes his case, saying that we can't possibly be the first race to have lived on Earth. How else could the pyramids have been built with such perfect precision with their technology, or how could ancient philosophers have known the Earth was a sphere, or that there were planets beyond Saturn? I highly recommend this book to those who have an open mind and are willing to question everything we have discovered thus far.
We Are Not The First by Andrew Tomas.......2003-05-25
I found the book to be a very interesting and fun read.It doesn't matter if it is scholary presented or not.Just enjoy the information presented.I found it thought provoking.

Book Description
A large, reliable digest of urban data about land use, transportation, and energy use, An International Sourcebook of Automobile Dependence in Cities, 19601990, provides government agencies, consulting firms, academics, and community and conservation groups with the kind of detailed information that they need to improve their planning, teaching, and researching in these fields. The book sets out detailed data on land use, private and public transportation, energy, environment, and economics in forty-six metropolitan areas in the United States, Australia, Canada, western Europe, and Asia for 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990.
An International Sourcebook provides a multitude of tables and diagrams so readers can quickly access key data on their own cities and easily gain a global perspective on how different cities perform according to various factors. For cities that are not included in the book, a comprehensive methodology chapter is provided, describing how to develop comparative data for other locations.
Each city represented in the book has its own set of color maps showing the various territorial boundaries and shape of the metropolitan area, the urbanized areas of the region, the freeway system and all the fixed track rail and bus transit systems. These maps--together with the detailed data, correlation analyses between city characteristics, and key trends between 1980 and 1990--make the book an essential tool for policy development, presentations, teaching, and further research.
Outstanding in its detail and its extensive coverage of cities, An International Sourcebook is a valuable source of information for anyone concerned with the impact of the automobile on urban environments and the role of planning in helping shape better cities.
The cities covered are: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Washington (U.S.); Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney (Australia); Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg (Canada); Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Vienna, Zurich (Europe); Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo (wealthy Asian cities); Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Surabaya (developing Asian cities).
