Book Description
This magisterial survey of the historical geography of the West Indies is at bottom concerned with the causes and consequences of three complex and inter-related phenomena: the rapid and total removal of a large aboriginal population; the development of plantation agriculture and the arrival of enforced labour, in the form of many thousands of African slaves; and the environmental, ecological and cultural changes that resulted. Dr Watts shows how the initial European vision of a land of plenty has been replaced by an awareness of the geographic and ecological fragiliaty of the area, and explains how the exploitative agricultural systems of the colonial and recent West Indies have not adjusted to the demands of the environment. An enormous array of historical, biological and literary sources are marshalled in support of Dr Watts' analysis, which is likely to remain the standard work on the subject for many years to come.
Book Description
This book explains the advantages of computer presentation resources, how to use them effectivley in and out of the courtroom.
Customer Reviews:
For neophytes and veterans alike - a great resource.......2007-03-09
If you've been deterred by the notion of creating a computer presentation for use in court, here's your book. The writing is in plain English and even engaging. The information starts with baby steps but will take you as far as you care to venture. The insights into how juries view, absorb and evaluate evidence is worth the price of the book, even if you never end up creating a computer presentation. The authors also cover using computer presentations with clients, colleagues and while teaching seminars. Absolutely terrific.
A Great Book for Any Lawyer.......2006-07-12
This book is a great tool for any lawyer, but particularly a neophyte to visual persuasion, to learn about how to persuade with PowerPoint and other computer presentation tools. It is a treasure trove of examples to use and to stimulate thinking about how to persuade visually.
Best Guide to Legal Presentations.......2006-05-21
The authors have outdone themselves with this edition. It is comprehensive and accessible, whether you are a novice or an expert. The CD provides excellent step by step instruction for the lawyer who wants to learn techniques to create the most effective presentations. But the book is more than just technical tips. The discussion of legal concerns, as well as basic rhetorical theory, makes this book an essential resource for lawyers and legal assistants who want to reach jurors (and judges) who are much more media savvy today. Most decision makers are not primarily aural learners, and in the days of CSI, the ability to highlight the most compelling evidence is not just a luxury.
What makes the book most valuable is the depth of understanding of persuasive techniques, illustrated with many true-to-life examples. Lawyers who are highly skilled in aural persuasion can hone their messages better, by learning how to harness technology to bring the facts to life through visual illustration. The good lawyer can learn how to present a seamless web of information that will reinforce the trial theme and the trial strategy for the juror or judge who can see and hear the evidence in the courtroom.
This is not just about trial techniques. The authors also address other ways in which presentations can be made more effectively (in motion hearings, settlement negotiations, administrative hearings and seminars).
The focus of the book is on presentation technique regardless of the format of the presentation. It includes the most popular presentation software (Powerpoint) as well as other software designed specifically for lawyers (Sanction II, TrialDirector).
This should be required reading for every litigator who wants to be more persuasive.

A new book on corn.......2005-08-10
This book is a good addition to the limited number of books on corn for young people of which there are surprisingly few considering how important corn is to the US food supply and economy. There are some good quality photographs and some excellent labeled illustrations. Many important topics are covered such as parts of a corn plant, how it grows, and fertilization. It also looks (briefly) at diverse corn related topics like insects, ancient corn, storage, and a few positive and negatives of modern corn. There is a glossary, index, and publisher updated web links. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

Book Description
Over 70% of the population in industrialized nations live in cities; in the next decade so will most of the world's entire population. This volume examines the impact of urban living on human health and biology. Cities pose numerous and diverse social and biological challenges to human populations. These challenges bear little resemblance to the forces that molded human biology throughout millions of years of evolution. Urban populations in industrialized nations have distinctive patterns of behavior, social stratification, stress, infectious disease, diet, activity, and exposure to pollutants from years of industrialization. These features affect diverse aspects of human function including human nutrition, energy expenditure, growth, and reproduction.

Book Description
This volume deals with "Microbial Production of L-Amino Acids" and presents five comprehensive, expert and actual review articles on the modern production of Amino Acids by application of biotechnologically optimized microorganisms. This includes not only the modern techniques of enzyme, metabolic and transport engineering but also sophisticated analytical methods like metabolic flux analysis and subsequent pathway modeling. A general review about industrial processes of Amino Acid production provides a comprehensive overview about recent strain development as well as fermentation technologies. It was our special interest to focus the other articles on the most important and best selling amino acids on the world market i.e. L-Glutamate, L-Lysine and L-Threonine. The authors of this special volume have contributed significantly to the progress of Amino Acid biotechnology in the last decades and earn our special gratitude and admiration for their expert review articles.
Book Description
Covering the elementary aspects of the physics of phases transitions and the renormalization group, this popular book is widely used both for core graduate statistical mechanics courses as well as for more specialized courses. Emphasizing understanding and clarity rather than technical manipulation, these lectures de-mystify the subject and show precisely "how things work." Goldenfeld keeps in mind a reader who wants to understand why things are done, what the results are, and what in principle can go wrong. The book reaches both experimentalists and theorists, students and even active researchers, and assumes only a prior knowledge of statistical mechanics at the introductory graduate level. Advanced, never-before-printed topics on the applications of renormalization group far from equilibrium and to partial differential equations add to the uniqueness of this book.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful introduction to critical phenomena.......2007-03-19
This book stands clearly to me as the best one on the vast and fascinating subject of phase transitions, critical phenomena and the renormalization group. My other references are Binney et al., Le Bellac and Yeomans. Nigel Goldenfeld's course is the most suitable for a first contact with the field. It stresses in a exceptional way the ideas lying under each concept and has a gift for explaining what's really going on beyond the equations. This can most clearly be seen with his careful discussion of ergodicity and symmetry breaking.
Moreover, this book is remarkable in that it presents various openings on modern issues ; it includes an overview of disordered systems and a rather complete discussion of dynamical critical phenomena.
After reading this book, you'll probably be ready to fully appreciate the typical treaties on critical phenomena, which use more sharp technical tools but which require a good understanding of the associated physics you'll only find so beautifully presented in Nigel Goldenfeld's book.
I could *become* a classic.......1999-11-17
As other reader has put, this is not a classic book, in that the main focus is renormalization group, which is certainly a very dynamic field. Nevertheless, the introduction and discusion of other topics I find very good, so time and time I come back to this book to read again about some other topic which is *not* the RG (ergodicity, the Ising model, dynamics...).
Good Book -- but not a classic.......1999-05-15
"Lectures on Phase Transitions and the Renormalization Group" is a good text, and a wonderful place to learn about the remormalization group in terms of real physical systems many of which can be measured in your basement (as opposed to HEP which, unless your basement happens to include fermilab is out-of-reach). This book is not a classic, not because it is a poor book, but because this is a dynamical area of modern research.

Book Description
The Wild Bunch, the confederation of western outlaws headed by Butch Cassidy, found sanctuary on the rugged Outlaw Trail. Stretching across Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, this trail offered desert and mountain hideouts to bandits and cowboys. The almost inaccessible Hole-in-the-Wall in Wyoming was a station on the Outlaw Trail well known to Butch Cassidy. To the south, in Utah, was the inhospitable Robbers’ Roost, where Butch and his friends camped in 1897 after a robbery at Castle Gate.
Charles Kelly recreates the mean and magnificent places frequented by the Wild Bunch and a slew of lesser outlaws. At the same time, he brings Butch Cassidy to life, traces his criminal apprenticeship and meeting with the Sundance Kid, and masterfully describes the exploits of the Wild Bunch.
Customer Reviews:
A Somewhat Misleading Title.......2007-08-01
This book gives a pretty detailed description of many notorious outlaws of the time. It gives a good overview of many characters of the wild west, as well as the three main spots along the Outlaw Trail. That being said, I was a little disappointed upon reading the book.
Unfortunately it has very little to do with Butch Cassidy. He is mentioned frequently throughout the book, but never in great detail. Every now and then Cassisdy does have a chapter devoted to one of his more famous exploits, but but it feels as though Kelly really only scratches the surface of Cassidy's exploits. Unfortunately it also seems that the author portrays Cassidy as a mythical figure, as he seems bent on proving Cassidy to be a robin hoodesque hero.
That being said it was an interesting book. If not so much about Cassidy you will learn about other outlaws like the McCarty gang, Matt Warner etc. In addition Kelly does give good firsthand accounts he obtained from many people who befriended, hunted, or simply knew of the outlaws. For these reasons, i gave this book three stars.
A scholarly work full of details about a time period long past.......2006-10-07
This book was originally self-published by Kelly in the 30s and then updated and republished in the 50s. It contains a very good Introduction written by Daniel Buck and Anne Meadows which puts what follows in perspective.
There are indeed problems with the book, but it is rich in details giving a far more accurate portrayal of the Old West and the outlaws that ran from the Canadian border to Mexico (cutting through specifically Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona) than what passes for the Old West in Hollywoods version or some of the more popular western fiction writers. I'd say after reading this that the west portrayed in David Milch's DEADWOOD is closer to reality.
I've traveled much of the territory in this book and found while doing so that the book enriched my travels. Much of the Old West is gone, but traces of it can still be found if you look hard and this book helps to bring it alive.
Kelly details the history of the Outlaw Trail through the different outlaws he writes of and their escapades. The book is not particularly linear. He does skip around and has an annoying habit of mentioning someone and then saying he'll tell more about them later. At times I felt I needed a character list to keep track of all of the outlaws and how they interrelated. Still, it gave me ample background about how the Outlaw Trail "worked" and the various places where they had free reign.
It's a scholarly work in need of some serious scholarly editing. Still, I found the information useful and interesting. If you're looking for strictly Louis L'Amour this probably isn't the book for you. If instead you're looking to find out more about the true Old West add this book to your collection. It gives another perspective and once you get past some of the at times overly descriptive language/dialogue you'll walk away with a better understanding of this time in our country's history. It's the history of the men and woman who never had movies written about them but who up until a little over 50 years ago still haunted the territories they once rode through with near impunity.
Research that stands the test of time.......2006-05-21
Although Charles Kelly did not leave us with a lot of footnotes while in the course of writing this book, his research has stood the test of time, and relatively few of his facts are contested, even after more than fifty years. He was able to interview many of the old timers, participants and eye-witnesses, and come closer to capturing the feel of the time period. No wonder the book is full of intrigue and insight that the best modern researchers can not match.
The Real West.......2000-09-20
The fascinating true story of the outlaws of the late Old West, (roughly 1887-1909). This book was originally written in the 1930s, based on interviews with witnesses still living. The author skillfully weaves Butch Cassidy throughout the narrative, but the story is not the outlaw leader's alone but of Gunplay Maxwell, Big Nose Jake, Sheriff John T. Pope, Queen Ann Bassett and a host of others, of Hole-in-the-Wall and Robber's Roost, of a time when *everyone* stole cattle, of bank robberies gone awry, local juries that never convict, and posses so fearful of the men they are pursuing that fresh sign on the trail means it's a good time to stop and brew coffee.

A scholarly work full of details about a time period long past.......2006-10-07
The other review of this book seems to have missed the point entirely and it's a shame they didn't enjoy it.
First the book must be taken in the perspective in which it was written. Kelly lived in Utah and yes he did interview many of the people either involved in the history he tells or witnesses. That's how history is told. And if the other reviewer has a problem with people sitting around a table telling their stories the reviewer had better stick to fiction because often that is indeed how history is told. I'd say the other reviewer has a severe case of ageism.
This book was originally self-published by Kelly in the 30s and then updated and republished in the 50s. The edition I read was published by the University of Nebaraska Press in 1996. It contains a very good Introduction written by Daniel Buck and Anne Meadows which puts what follows in perspective.

I've traveled much of the territory in this book and found while doing so that the book enriched my travels. Much of the Old West is gone, but traces of it can still be found if you look hard and this book helps to bring it alive.
The book is not specifically about Butch Cassidy, but indeed covers many "unheard of bandits" as the other reviewer calls them. Perhaps the reviewer was simply searching for a retelling of the film. In that case I recommend they search out a copy of Goldman's old script once available in paperback.
Kelly details the history of the Outlaw Trail through the different outlaws he writes of and their escapades. The book is not particularly linear. Hard to swallow -- easy to put down (in more ways than one).......2000-12-29
Easily one of the worst books I've ever read. A true groan.
This book fairly centers on Butch Cassidy, starts and ends with him, but is grossly unappealing otherwise. Subtitled "and the Wild Bunch," the subtitle overruns all credits. Each chapter features some new, unheard-of bandit, and uses such ridiculous metaphor, description and humor as to elevate the topic to a comic strip.
For instance, author Kelly declares a posse's hanging a criminal to their wanting him to suffer "an acute case of suspended animation." And the thoughtless "Tom Horn had checked off plenty of Apaches in his time." And the supposition: "He was ordered held for the district court, but the records do not show that disposition was made of the case." [Conclusion suspiciously resembles guessing. . .] "He probably broke jail before his trial came up." And also the colorful: "Longabaugh returned his shots and no more was heard of the Great Falls officer."
The author's claim is countless personal interviews (40 years later) with people who were eyewitnesses to the events described. Everything then appears like the author gathered around the family table, telling old wives' tales that he originally heard from his decrepid old uncle. He speaks of the "Outlaw Trail" the same way the rest of us talk about "high school reunion" or "baby's christening." Every criminal is a hero to him. Every gunfight an enjoyable exchange between showmen. Every hanging or robbery a charming vignette.
Kelly concludes: "It was the irony of fate that this leader of the Wild Bunch, successful in a hundred forays, who had taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash during his lifetime at the point of a gun, should finally die for the theft of a mule!"
If you see anyone reading this book, kindly take it from him. It will benefit you both.
Product Description
The outlaw Trail descibes the three almost inaccessible Western mountain hideouts frequented by the Cassidy gang and seldom visited by the Law. They bore the name, Hole in the Wall, Brown's Hole, and Robber's Roost. Mr. Kelly's book is packed full of the exploits of the extraordinary men who rode with Cassidy or crossed his path. The Outlaw Trail is fact, not fiction. It is based on the author's decades of research among old Western court and newspaper records, thousands of miles of travel from Canada to the Mexican border, and many interviews with surviving outlaws and with their descendats. It is authentic Americana, filled with raw truth and stirring adventure

Creek Country: The Creek Indians and Their World, 1796-1816

Customer Reviews:
a rare eye witness account of life among the Creek Indians.......2004-05-07
For the student of Alabama/Georgia history or Creek Indian history, this is the most complete and comprehensive eye witness journal that exists of daily life among the Creek Indians in the 1795 to 1819 time period. This is not a book written by Hawkins but a collection of his daily journals over several years of life among the Creeks.
Hawkins is one of the few educated men (ex US Senator from North Carolina) who lived among the Indians, ate with them, treated with them, talked to them in their homes and counsels, and made daily journals. I consider it one of the most important tools I have seen for learning about Creek Indian life in the Georgia/Alabama area.
One of the most interesting accounts is when Hawkins is "accosted" in the night by an amorous Creek lady who offers herself as well as her wordly goods to his management. At the time he is getting on in age with a bad case of gout and she is 25 years old. It seems that he turned her down but the fine details of the incident are most interesting and revealing of customs.
For all intents and purposes, Hawkins is the leader of the Creek nation after Chief McGillivray's death (1793) untils its demise in the Alabama/Georgia region.
Some of the most interesting parts of the book are the speeches or talks given by the various town chiefs. The names of all the chiefs, traders, and white residents are listed as well as the people who travelled through the country and had to get passports from Hawkins. The book is full of Creek terminology which is colorful and descriptive such as "he who cannot get enough land" and similar things. Hawkins delights himself in learning and recording the language.
Its apparent that the Creek Indians loved and trusted Hawkins and that he had their best interests at heart, although he was a US government employee bound to do the will of Jefferson which was to "civilize" the Native tribes which in the end caused them to implode in a civil war which destroyed the Creek Nation established in Alabama and Georgia.
This is an invaluable tool for the scholar and a fun read for the casual student. It is packed full of fine details, lists, bookeeping entries, which can easily be scanned over by those who dont need the details. There are gold nuggets here for the research scholar.
Thanks to the Alabama Press for publishing this important historical account.
Book Description
Explores concept of probability, surveys rules for addition and multiplication of probabilities, conditional probability, total probability, Bayes formula, Bernoulli's scheme, random variables, the Chebychev inequality, distribution curves, and the means by which an event is declared to be in practice impossible.
Customer Reviews:
An illuminating introduction to probability theory........2004-10-26
This brief text, which was written for high school students in the Soviet Union following World War II, is an illuminating introduction to probability theory that does not require a foundation in calculus. The authors develop the theory by generalizing from examples, most of which are taken from military or industrial applications. This gives the reader insight into how mathematicians develop theorems by abstracting from problems arising in the real world. The theorems are proved rigorously except in the final chapter on normal distributions. Formal proofs about normal distributions require advanced mathematics not familiar to the intended audience.
Probability theory is developed in the first section of the text. The authors define probability. They explain the addition rule and how it simplifies when events are mutually exclusive. Likewise, after they obtain the multiplication rule in terms of conditional probabilities, they explain how it simplifies when events are mutually independent. The authors discuss Bayes' formula for the probability of a hypothesis given that a given event has been observed using several examples. They then prove Bernoulli's formula for the most probable number of occurrences of an event when there are a large number of trials.
The second section of the text is on random variables. The authors discuss laws of distribution, mean values, variance and standard of deviation, and how these quantities are used to measure the dispersion of a random variable. Their development culminates in Chebyshev's law of large numbers. In the final chapter on normal distributions, the authors informally discuss their properties and show how they can be used to solve problems.
In a brief conclusion, the authors discuss other developments in probability theory that are beyond the scope of this text.
This text is an excellent introduction to probability theory. I recommend it highly for the insights it offers. However, it does not contain exercises. To learn mathematics, one must solve problems. Therefore, I suggest that you read this text in conjunction with a problem book on probability or a text on probability that does contain exercises such as Samuel Goldberg's Probability: An Introduction.
Old and useful, but get something else.......2001-12-04
Even though the fifth edition of this book was published in 1961, this book still gives a useful and brief introduction to probability. However, if you're going to buy a book to learn statistics or probability, I would suggest a more recent book. They may not be as brief and concise as this, but newer books would be more up to date. One interesting thing about the Gnedenko/Khinchin book is their examples and problems, which involve things such as the production of artillery shells, or hitting targets with cannons. It is a very welcome change from the traditional, but obvious examples that use decks of cards or dice. Also, it says things about the audience for whom this book was originally meant, and the relevant topics of the time of the cold war. Still, I suggest a more recent text.

Book Description
California Desert Miracle is a story of how unpaid and under-funded volunteers fought for the last large area of wildland left in California. Their efforts, lasting over 20 years, culminated in the enactment of the California Desert Protection Act of 1994. The story describes how masterful leadership helped work the Act through Congress despite filibusters, "holds", and other legislative mechanisms of delay and destruction arrayed against it. This story will engage and enlighten all who care deeply about the environment.
Customer Reviews:
Hard read, confusing, will put you to sleep.......2004-09-18
This book tries to document how legislation was created to protect California deserts. I am still not sure what was accomplished by the desert protection act. The tale is told in a disjointed manner that is hard to follow. I know much hard work went into these activities, but it will not come through in this book.
Also note that this book is very partisan. For example, groups that ride motorcycles in the desert are portrayed in a negative manner, I guess as the enemy. I would like to have seen their viewpoint presented. So, this book may give you some idea of what happened, but only from one side.
It is not a book for the student of politics, too one sided, and the story proceeds in a random fashion. I hoped to understand what was protected, why, how various viepoints were served. Instead, it is a "pat on the back" to a handful of individuals. I wish it would be postured as such, and I could have saved my money.
