Book Description
Hancock and Logue, along with their contributors, seek to explicate the achievements, problems, and prospects of simultaneous processes of economic and political transitions from communism to contrasting forms of market economies and democracy in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and eastern Germany. Contributors include 14 American and European scholars with intimate professional and personal familiarity with the various case studies. The contributors draw on process analysis and transition theory to explore different national approaches to privatization. This includes individual voucher schemes, the use of investment funds, the direct sale of former state owned enterprises, employee buy outs, direct foreign investments and their consequences for parallel processes of marketization and democratization. A quarter of the volume is devoted to comparative analyses of contrasting modes of privatization, the role of public opinion and law in the transition process, and the international economic and political context of postcommunist transformation. An important analysis for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with postcommunist economic and political change.

Book Description
The societal changes engendered by the rapid technological advances of the past century underline more than ever the crucial need to reflect on the future of our educational systems. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have completely modified our living, working, spending and leisure patterns, but do they also offer the very opportunity that we, as citizens, parents, teachers and politicians, have been seeking to ensure that children all over the world have access to an education that will enable them to become masters of their own lives? "Upon What Does the Turtle Stand?" attempts to answer this question by: examining the social aims underlying ICT integration in education; providing readers with a broad overview of the subject; underlining similarities and differences, points of accord and of conflict in implementation strategies and approaches; presenting the issue from the standpoint of highly experienced experts in the field; enabling readers to perceive more clearly the fundamental aims and values upon which "The Turtle Stands". This publication offers a wealth of information to researchers, academics, university lecturers, students, teacher trainers and trainees, educationalists and policy makers in their quest to define the rightful role of ICT in education.

A great introduction to the chaotic field of e.learning .......2005-05-23
I have been interested in the subject of e.learning for a long time. As a young teacher I have done my best to introduce e.learning to my work- I understand this is a must, without it our teaching will become obsolete. We simply should learn to speak the language of the new generation.. Still I have always been puzzled by the chaotic nature of this field, the lack of any accepted mappings of this "jungle" and the lack of systematic thinking starting with the aims of education and continuing to the ways e.learnign can serve them; as well as the lack of mapping of the major factors leading to the difficulties in introducing it .
All the training sessions on these issues I have taken part in and books I have read - focused on the practicalities and ignored the above more fundamental issues . This has always frustrated me. This book is the first which goes much beyond the mere practicalities (without ignoring them) . It supplied me with an accessible mapping of this chaotic field, understanding of possible ultimate goals and acknowledgement of the many differences and gaps in knowledge still characterizing it. Reading it has been for me a real intellectually exciting and professionally and personally empowering experience. I recommend it to anybody who is involved in the area of e.learning with interests going beyond the concrete and the immediate.

Book Description
This volume contains a representative discussion of mathematical problems that arise in radar and sonar. The design of waveforms for radar and sonar and the development of algorithms for the processing of these waveforms lead to many interesting and difficult problems of applied mathematics. It is timely to separate these prob- lems from the engineering tasks of radar and sonar to form a minitopic of applied mathematics. The range of such problems - applications of group theory, modern topics of signal processing, inverse problems, array processing and beamforming, estimation-theoretic imaging, and phase tracking - cannot be found in any other single volume.

Book Description
Low-dimensional systems have revolutionized semiconductor physics and had a tremendous impact on technology. Using simple physical explanations, with reference to examples from actual devices, this book introduces the general principles essential to low-dimensional semiconductors. The author presents a formalism that describes low-dimensional semiconductor systems, studying two key systems in detail: the two-dimensional electron gas, employed in field-effect transistors, and the quantum well, whose optical properties have multiple applications in lasers and other opto-electronic devices. The book will be invaluable to undergraduate and first-year graduate physics or electrical engineering students taking courses in low-dimensional systems or heterostructure device physics.
Customer Reviews:
excellent introduction to quantum structures.......2003-04-02
i read this book and it seems to be very readable. it explains the physics behind the quantum heterostructures in a lucid and tractable manner. i recommend this volume before reading the treatise by weisbach & vinter. those who want to start research on quantum structures will find this book as an invaluable resource. its comprehensive and almost exhaustive.
A first taste of mesoscopic physics.......2002-10-14
Readable introductions to mesoscopic physics are few and far between, many being either far too simplistic and naive or too mired in formalism. Davies gives clear and lucid discussions of such topics as electron confinement in quantum wells, the integral quantum Hall effect, quantum point contacts, and MODFET's/HEMT's. Although by no means extensive and in depth, Davies does point out simplifications and refers the interested reader to relevant references for more details. Overall, it is a balanced introduction.
This book is a useful point of entry for undergraduates to low-dimensional semiconductor physics. Reading this book is good preparation for more advanced and specialized literature including: Solid State Physics vol. 44 ed. Ehrenreich and Turnbull; Perspectives in Quantum Hall Effects, Das Sarma and Pinczuk.
As with any new text, there are errata but an up to date webpage of corrections is maintained by the author.
Good Introduction.......2002-03-17
The first book you should read if you wanna do some Low Dimentional Electron Physics and only learned Solid State Physics before. It just covers all topics in this field --- with the knowledge in this book, you could read any new paper published recently.
And this book's written style is very friendly --- just a textbook! So it could be finished in 2 days if you know the basic notions in Solid State Physics and concentrate on it.
So there is no match for such a good introductory book --- there's no other ones like this --- I searched a lot when I tried to enter this field, and this is a good choice:)
2D or not 2D..........2001-05-24
Graduate level concepts are expounded upon in the manner of an undergraduate text (i.e. readable. Boggle!). John Davies does not assume that the reader has already done all of the calculations available in the field. Rich conceptual descriptions are rooted in an easy formalism accessible to anyone with a background in the elements of physics. This text is proof that even the exotic physics of quantum mechanics in reduced dimensions is not difficult when care is taken by the author to relate to the reader as a student rather than a peer.

From Reliable Sources: An Introduction to Historical Methods
ASIN: 0199243158 |
Book Description
Published here for the first time in paperback is much of a final and long-anticipated work on philosophy of history by the renowned Oxford philosopher, historian, and archaeologist R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943). The original text of this uncompleted work was only recently discovered in the archives of Oxford University Press. Also found there were two conclusions written by Collingwood for lectures which were eventually revised and published as The Idea of Nature, but which have relevance to his philosophy of history as well. These pieces are included in this volume, accompanied by further short writings by Collingwood on historical knowledge and inquiry, selected from previously unpublished manuscripts held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. All these writings, besides containing entirely new ideas, discuss further many of the issues which Collingwood is famous for having raised in The Idea of History and in his Autobiography. A lengthy editorial introduction sets these writings in their context, and discusses philosophical questions to which they give rise. The editors also consider why Collingwood left The Principles of History unfinished at his death, and what significance should be attached to the fact that it contains no reference to one of his best-known ideas: that of historical understanding as re-enactment. This volume will be a significant publication not just in Collingwood studies but in philosophy of history generally.
Customer Reviews:
R. G. Collingwood's Principia Historia.......2003-06-25
This is the book, or a fragment of the book, that R. G. Collingwood was preparing to write his entire life. It is, in this edition, very incomplete. I have rated it as four stars only because there is too much matter from the editor, and not enough of Collingwood. This book, read in conjunction with his series on Philosophy and History, particularly the "Essay on Metaphysics", "The Idea of History", and "An Essay on Philosophical Method", will give the reader a very complete idea of Collingwood's philosophy. The book, as Collingwood conceived it, but did not live to complete, was to be an expanded version of his earlier "Speculum Mentis" (1924), which was his only complete treatise covering the entire range of philosophy.
"Speculum Mentis" is in fact one of the most remarkable books written in the last century, and Collingwood must be rated among the great philosophical thinkers of all time. Like all the great philosophers he has been misunderstood, most of all by philosophers, who, rather than read the text read their own interpetations into it, and then try to classify and pigeonhole the writer based on this. His writing style is beautiful. He is nearly as easy to read as C. S. Lewis, whom he knew, and more so than his close friend and colleague at Oxford, the Celtic philologist, J. R. R. Tolkein.
The best book covering these three and their teachers at Oxford is James Patrick, "The Magdalen Metaphysicals: Idealism & Orthodoxy at Oxford, 1901-1945" (Mercer University Press, 1895), which is available through Amazon.com. This interesting book should lead you to a new understanding of these men and the similar philosophy that informs the work of each.

Book Description
In the late 1950s, against the unfolding backdrop of the Cold War, American and European leaders began working to reshape Western Europe. They sought to adapt the region to a changing world in which European empires were rapidly disintegrating, Soviet influence was spreading, and the United States could no longer shoulder the entire political and economic burden of the West yet hesitated to share it with Europe. Focusing on the four largest Atlantic powers--Britain, France, Germany, and the United States--Jeffrey Giauque explores these early stages of European integration.
Giauque uses evidence from newly opened international archives to show how a mix of cooperation and collaboration shaped efforts to unify postwar Europe. He examines the "grand designs" each country developed to advance its own interests, specific plans for collaboration or accord, and the reactions of the other Atlantic powers to these proposals. Competing national interests not only derailed many otherwise sound plans for European unity, Giauque says, but also influenced such nascent European institutions as the Common Market, the antecedent of today's European Union. Indeed, beyond examining the origins of the European community, this comparative study provides insight into national attitudes and aspirations that continue to shape European and American policies today.

The Rape of the Forests.......2001-08-07
Australia does not have the strong tradition of Nature writing that America does. One exception to this is Western Australian writer William Lines. This book, the title of which pays its respects to an Eric Newby classic, is the story of his walk he did along a previous version of Western Australia Bibbulman Track which runs south from Perth. Lines deftly describes the every day aspects of the walk but intertwines his descriptions with an account of the history, a rather sad one, of Western Australian forests as a result of greed, ignorance and stupidity. An Australian environmental classic.
