Book Description
This book is a valuable tool that provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of business considerations as well as legal issues for secondary market securitization of tax-exempt assets, including the securitized TOB market. It discusses and analyzes solely the securitization of state and local government obligations, interest on which is federally tax-exempt, using partnerships, custodial arrangements, trusts and other structures that pass through to investors the interest income without changing its character for federal income tax purposes.

Book Description
The function of vertebrate hearing is served by a surprising variety of sensory structures in the different groups of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. This book discusses the origin, specialization, and functional properties of sensory hair cells, beginning with environmental constraints on acoustic systems and addressing in detail the evolutionary history behind modern structure and function in the vertebrate ear. Taking a comparative approach, chapters are devoted to each of the vertebrate groups, outlining the transition to land existence and the further parallel and independent adaptations of amniotic groups living in air. The volume explores in depth the specific properties of hair cells that allowed them to become sensitive to sound and capable of analyzing sounds into their respective frequency components. Evolution of the Vertebrate Auditory System is directed to a broad audience of biologists and clinicians, from the level of advanced undergraduate students to professionals interested in learning more about the evolution, structure, and function of the ear.

Book Description
Integrated Science is a straight forward, easy-to-read, but substantial introduction to the fundamental behavior of matter and energy in living and nonliving systems. It is intended to serve the needs of non-science majors who are required to complete one or more science courses as part of a general or basic studies requirement. It introduces basic concepts and key ideas while providing opportunities for students to learn reasoning skills and a new way of thinking about their environment. No prior work in science is assumed. The language, as well as the mathematics, is as simple as can be practical for a college-level science course.
Book Description
Some writers so capture the soul and spirit of a people that they are identified with them forever after. In England, it was Charles Dickens, in the United States, it was Mark Twain. For the Slavic nations, and to some extent for all Central Europeans, it is the Czech writer, Jaroslav Hasek.
Hasek's most important work was centered around a Czech soldier's experiences in World War One. It's actual title is The Fateful Adventures of The Good Soldier Svejk during the World War, but it is known by tens of millions of Central Europeans as simply, The Good Soldier Svejk. This monumental, humorous work is acknowledged as ". . . one of the greatest masterpieces of satirical writing" by no less a standard and exalted reference than the Encyclopedia Britannica.
The book's central character is a quintessential, working-class citizen-soldier, often abused by the fates and the forces of the Austrian empire. In both civilian and military life, Svejk lives by his wits. His chief ploy is to appear witless to those in authority. In fact, he is fond of pointing out that he has been certified to be an imbecile by an official military medical commission. Consequently, he reasons, he cannot be held responsible for his sometimes questionable actions because he's a certified nitwit!
Yet, Svejk is not a coward, nor is he indolent. He is drafted back into the army as cannon fodder to die for an Emperor he despises. His method of subverting the Austrian Empire is to carry out his orders to an absurd conclusion. His is an inspired resistance. He holds the foreign authorities, and their Czech fellow travelers, accountable for their ridiculous platitudes and pseudo-patriotic blather.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2006-12-01
I found that this book was absolutely amazing. After reading John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces and looking for something to match its wit and humor I discovered Svejk. The tale follows Svejk and his time in the military during WWI. Its main character, being a notorious imbecile, gives the book outstanding humor. Svejk never plays by the rules, in spite of that, he manages to seem innocent. Some of the reviews said that it translation was horrendous but to me it seemed perfect. This book is a unknown, must have, of world literature
Good Try But No Cigar.......2005-08-17
When I saw this new translation of Svejk in a bookstore I immediately bought it. I love the novel and I have always thought that the Cecil Parrott translation, although good, wasn't quite "it". The problem with Parrott's translation is that it is a little too formal compared to the Czech original (incidentally, I'm fluent in Czech, so I know what the prose should feel like). This new Sadlon translation promised to remedy this situation, so optimistically I plowed right in, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, although the language has been (appropriately) "roughed up" a bit, the prose has suffered. Hasek's prose flows. It feels "right"; it doesn't jar. Unfortunately, Sadlon's translation at times does. Parrott's prose is, I think, closer to the original in its feel, while Sadlon's vocabulary is closer to the original. Blending the two, I suppose, might be the answer.
Amazing Satire.......2004-10-12
I bought the old translation of this book for a class, and then I happened upon this translation on amazon.com. I ended up buying it, and now my only regret is that I will have to read Books Two and Three from the old version. The translation allows for fluid, enjoyable reading, filled with an irony and humor that I have rarely found in translations of any book. Only the new translation of Andrei Bely's "Petersburg" comes close to the satire of this work, among the books I have recently read. If you are looking for a book about the absurdity of war and the resilience of a man who stands ready to fight it with his own foolishness, you should read this book. I will be eagerly awaiting the further translations by Zenny Sadlon and Mike Joyce, because the older translation does not even compare to the older, and, frankly, less funny translations. This book is not just a humorous book, however; it is a biting satire of a world gone mad in the midst of the Great War, a time when nations turned against each other as if they were merely playing a game of chess, with consequences for the lives of good citizens of many nations. Svejk presents a constant front of simpleton patriotism, one which the military and medical officials believe can only be mocking or ironic. This in itself reflects the contrived and ridiculous nature of the imperial fealty that was demanded of subjects during and after the First World War: even the most trained and disciplined soldiers find Svejk's constant and vocal patriotism ridiculous; it must be a parody. By admitting this with their punishment of him, they say very little about Svejk and a great deal about the false nature of blind patriotism and imperial loyalty, a sentiment only truly found in a few characters of the book, such as the archduchess who comes to give Svejk gifts in response to his idiotic screams in the street in support of the Great War. By reflecting on the false nature of patriotic war-mongering among the elite, Svejk stands to protest the mistakes of leaders by following them absolutely and enthusiastically, parroting the propaganda he is fed to such a level that even the propagandists are embarassed. Unlike other anti-war protestors or observers in most other anti-war tracts, Svejk stands out as someone who accepts the premises of the ruling class to such a degree that they are, themselves, embarassed to have set them forth. I thank goodness that this new translation lets that shine through, far from the old and stilted language of past translations. It is worth the money and time to wait for the new volumes of Books Two and Three to be published, and to buy Book One in this new translation, rather than to waste any time and money on an old translation that misses the point and insults the spirit of the genius Jaroslav Hasek who so beautifully and hilariously told the story of Svejk the good soldier and his fateful adventures.
What a disappointment.......2002-10-09
Svejk is not an easy book to translate - after all, Hasek was an anarchist. I've read the Penguin translation and it wasn't bad but stilted and very British English. This new and improved translation is quite simply terrible. A translator needs to know not only the words in both languages, but correct grammar as well. And this English speaker/writer does not. Stick with the older translations.
Yes, there can be a near-perfect translation.......2002-08-31
I own this book and the Czech original. Before I got this particular
translation, I used to feel sorry that my American son would never be
able to get a glimpse into the mentality of a nation living at the
bottom of the food chain, powerless but never defeated. This book
captures perfectly the spirit of Svejk, his seemingly pointless
rambbling, apparent half-wit, and his truly folk origin.
I found only one(!) place were the translation did not convey a
possible double meaning of the original, which is
absolutely remarkable. If the reader does not "get" the book,
it is not because of the translation. In fact, amongst my fellow Czechs and
Slovaks, there are only two groups of people when it comes to Hasek's
Svejk: those who love it and those who despise it. So the fact that there are
the two extremal types of reviews of this particular translation constitutes the
ultimate testimony of the translator's success.

Book Description
"Messengers of the Wind goes beyond the autobiographies of everyday women. These are women who have long been an invisible part of American culture. Their stories are haunting, frightening, encouraging, and courageous. . . . Katz is a faithful guide."
--The Minnesota Daily
In Messengers of the Wind, Native American women, old and young, from a variety of tribal groups, speak with eloquence and passion about their experience on the land and in urban areas; about their work as artists, activists, and healers; as grandmothers, mothers, and daughters; as modern women with a link to the past. And as each woman, renowned and obscure, tells her remarkable personal story, it is clear that each has tapped into the power that comes from within and has reached back into a history that brings with it courage and hope.
" 'Giving energy to Mother Earth' -- Yes. That is our duty as women, as Natives, and as human beings. Messengers of the Wind is a way of doing just that. It is not a dance, feet patting our mother, but it is an offering, the voices of the women sent to comfort her. Thank-you, Jane Katz, for your offering. It is a special and much-needed gift."
--Paula Gunn Allen
Author of Voice of the Turtle
"COMPELLING. . . INTIMATE."
--The Cleveland Plain Dealer
"A RICH COLLECTION OF PERSONAL STORIES. . .REWARDING. . . These are powerful women with important stories to tell."
--Kirkus Reviews

messengers.......2007-01-15
sort of dry and slow...but there were a few very interesting stories. good book but a bit bland.
Fabulous Insight! into Native America Culture and Feelings!.......2000-07-23
This books truly shows identifies the disconnect between the Indians and culture of the Americans who took everything from them. Great insight into the perspective by American Native women. Retells the history of the Native Americans and their struggle to find a place of their own (one that American's had not already taken). Wonderful historical information and references at the end of each chapter. A true recollection of what happen throughout the United States during a difficult time in history and it continues today through sterotyping and prejudice. Very good reading. I couldn't put it down.
Best book on social action that I have read........1998-12-09
Felt like I knew these Native American Women as I read their stories. Must admit I needed a box of kleenex handy. They told of their experiences and each personal story told of their strength and choices they made and their past history. How they had survived tore at your heartstrings. Another plus was that a photo was included for most of the women. Each story was special and I learned so much about Native American Women by reading this book. Sometimes their words seemed so powerful you would quit reading and think about that woman's remarks before reading more. Highly recommend this book.

A pioneer family homesteads in the Dakota Territory.......1998-12-27
Set at the turn of the twentieth century, a husband and wife make the decision to take on the challenge of homesteading in the Dakota Territory. As the territory changes from frontier to "settled area," the threat of WWI reaches the people. The family feels threatened by a force it has never had to deal with before. Rugged individualism comes at a price and for some the price is supreme. An artist tries to make her statement in colors and strokes upon the canvass of rural life and struggle. The Wind as Messenger is an insightful story which takes America's last chance at pioneering through its complete cycle.

Book Description
Have you ever wondered how a taxi meter works? Or why it takes so long for an elevator to respond to your call? Or what makes a hit single? In
How Long Is a Piece of String?, you'll find the answers to these and many other everyday questions.
Dip into this intriguing book and discover the astonishing "37% rule" for blind dates, the avoidance tactic of the gentleman's urinal, and some extraordinary scams that have been devised to get rich quick. Here you will also uncover the origins of the seven-day week and the seven-note scale; an explanation of why underdogs win; some clever techniques for detecting fraud; and the reason why epidemics sweep across a nation, then disappear.
How Long Is a Piece of String? is the perfect book for anyone curious about the way in which math underlies our everyday lives.
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent introduction to the fun of mathematics.......2005-03-28
This is a follow-up to the earlier, excellent, "Why Do Buses Come In Threes?". While the earlier book focused on those annoying little mysteries of life, this asks a set of different questions, many related to tough decisions such as how conmen get rich, or "should I phone a friend?"
The answers, like before, lead us through a gentle, humorous exploration of mathematics and its relevance to everyday life. Along the way we explore (among others) geometric progression (why all pyramid schemes eventually fail), the geometry of stacking, fractals, chaos theory, the mathematics behind taxi meters, and various uses and abuses of statistics, both to detect and commit fraud.
The two messages of this book are that mathematics is important, and that it's fun. It's in the same vein as the work of Martin Gardener, but with a British slant.
To aid casual readers or those who've previously found the subject forbidding the maths is kept at a fairly simple level. Most of the time the concepts are communicated in words and simple graphs, but key equations are included and explained for completeness. The text is easy to read and the illustrations clear and amusing. Although aimed at those new to the enjoyment of maths, it's also a good memory jogger for those with a bit more background.
I thoroughly recommend this book, and also the authors' earlier volume.
I have never read a book so quickly.......2003-12-29
I received this book for Christmas 2003, by the 26th I only had 40 pages left. If you are looking for a book to improve your mathematical ability, this is not for you. If you like to think and wonder why things are the way they are, then this is the book for you. I found myself reading one section after another, chapter after chapter. From the reasons why pyramid schemes are destined to fail, what is the best way to pack boxes of belongings when moving house, when do you take the money and leave 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' and many more fascinating and thought provoking ideas and concepts. I liked the book so much, I bought the previous book 'Why do buses come in threes?' the same day I finished this one - and I have already read one third of that one and it is not even New Year yet. This book would make the perfect gift for anyone who likes to think! So if you think they think, I think you should get it!
