    Book Description

For too long the study of impoverished Puerto Ricans living in the fifty states has been undermined by the use of broad generalizations. Puerto Ricans have been statistically grouped with all Latinos, studied with models developed for understanding African-American life, and written about as if New York's Puerto Rican community was the only such community worthy of detailed study. This book changes all that. In this important new work, Susan Baker looks beyond the traditional models and rewrites the origins, current state, and reasons behind Puerto Rican poverty.

The book tells the story of how Puerto Ricans have left the Rustbelt cities to return to the island or to seek job opportunities elsewhere. Those left behind are predominantly poor women with dependents who live in segregated neighborhoods with little chance of finding low-skilled jobs because of competition from non-citizen, non-politicized workers.

In her alternative explanation, the author presents data from across the country and puts forth an explanation that is grounded in Puerto Rican history and sensitive not only to the interconnectedness of the island and mainland population, but also the increasing distress faced by Puerto Rican women and the sad truth that Puerto Rican citizenship in this country is a second class one.

        Book Description

Flexible Incentives for the Adoption of Environmental Technologies in Agriculture identifies and structures more flexible economic incentives for the achievement of environmental goals in agriculture. It provides a conceptual framework and presents case studies that analyze how flexible incentives can address environmental problems that are caused by agricultural production. The book brings together economists, agency personnel and political economists for the purpose of exploring how new cutting-edge economic tools could be developed and applied to environmental problems. The goal of the book is to complement and to expand the economic theory of environmental regulation and technology adoption with new research findings.
The key theme of this book is the important role technology takes when addressing environmental problems. New technologies and technical development are broadly defined to include economic instruments, innovative ways to communicate environmental information, new economic institutions, and education. This book is designed for public and private policymakers, government analysts, teachers, researchers and students who specialize in the fields of natural resources, agricultural economics and environmental regulation. It provides a fresh perspective on what types of incentives may be used to lead us to the desired environmental outcomes and offers new ideas about the types of economic instruments that may achieve these outcomes.

              5 out of 5 stars A work of genius........2007-08-30

With a light-to-moderate amount of self-tuition, this system can give a complete thicko absolute power over fundamental mathematics. I don't know what else to say about it, other than that if Trachtenberg was taught worldwide in schools from grade 1 upwards then no kid anywhere would ever be called a maths dunce ever again.

If you haven't read the book this probably sounds like inane hyperbole; otherwise I bet you already thought the same thing.

5 out of 5 stars Problem here = solution here : You can now PUT your CALCULATORS up FOR SALE ! .......2006-06-20

Starting out; you really only need to know how to count one-tru-eleven.
The book sets out by presenting to you a new way to 'think' multiplication [you'll learn to 'read' each individual cipher - no more memorizing of multiplication tables] - completely mastered in about one lazy afternoon.
Soon, you will be reading and handling numbers as well as ciphers in much the same way you now read books.
Your memory will work and expand quickly; you'll find yourself dividing, multiplying and adding just for the fun of it - without any support of tools like pen & paper etc., even for billions * billions or division into like a zillion decimals !
In about one month I worked through this book cover-to-cover, read every page of every chapter, did every single exercise over.
*** This SYSTEM is guaranteed to WORK - anyone can learn it ***
Even for someone who is not intimidated by numbers: this is the only book, you'll ever need to become the wizzard of basic math.
Do not for any reason skip any chapter or pages or the entire philosophy WILL elude you !
With pen [indeed: PEN] and paper work your way attentively and meticiously through every single exercise - even the obvious ones ! PLEASE; Stay with each of the examples and repeat them over untill you've completely 'got it'.
About half-way through this book you'll probably find calculators much too slow AND in-accurate [too few digits displayed]; you'll always vision the complete solution in your head long before you've finished punching the calculator's keys.
The division chapters seemed the most difficult ones to me [two entirely independent and very different systems]; work through both of them. The latter diviion sytem is by far the most difficult part of the entire book - PLEASE brace yourself to put the extra effort into mastering it - and then SELL your CALCULATORs !
Your conception and memory skills as well as self-confidence will be instantly and permanently boosted.
Excellent self-study guide for children, too !
The very best self-study basic-math teacher for anyone who shyes away from basic accounting - or just wants a-trick-or-two to improve their calculating-speed.

4 out of 5 stars is it good?.......2006-01-30

well i kinda make up tricks and other ways of solving problems too..so i just want 2 kno if im gonna understand this thing..im in 7th grade

5 out of 5 stars Multiplication by 5 works !!!.......2005-12-30

Dont read it wrong. It really works

What are you taking half of and what should you add. Take half of the neighbour and only add 5 if its a uneven number. Dont add the number you have in front of you (just see if its even or odd)

Its a revolution, i will not use my calculator all the time from now. It really works.

He did the rest, how can he bee wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Method really works - Instantaneously.......2005-04-11

I have read a lot of books on speed mathematics, and without exception, they are all useless except this one. The method described here is easy. But most importantly, it scales up to larger numbers without additional complexity. This scaling up is what differentiates this method from the others.

The key to learning this method is skip the first chapter. Don't waste time in learning how to multiply by 8. Rather, start with the second chapter, the "direct method" for multiplication.

You will surprise your friends and family when they see you multiplying numbers in your head.

                                  Book Description

The classic poems and spine–tingling stories of a Gothic American master collected in one volume.

Of all the American masters, Edgar Allan Poe staked out perhaps the most unique and vivid reputation, as a master of the macabre. Even today, in the age of horror movies and high–tech haunted houses, Poe is the first choice of entertainment for many who want a spine–chilling thrill.

Born in Boston in 1809, and dead at the age of 40, Poe wrote across several fields during his life, noted for his poetry and short stories as well as his criticism. The best of each of these is collected here, including the classic poem The Raven, and timeless stories like The Tell–Tale Heart. In his introduction to this volume, G. R. Thompson argues that Poe was a great satirist and comedic craftsman, as well as a formidable Gothic writer. "All of Poe's fiction," Thompson writes, "and the poems as well, can be seen as one coherent piece – as the work of one of the greatest ironists of world literature."

                                  5 out of 5 stars A solid Poe collection.......2001-08-14

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the undisputed giants of United States literature--indeed, of all world literature. And "Great Short Works of Edgar Allan Poe," edited by G.R. Thompson, is a solid sampling of some of Poe's most marvelous literary achievements. The editor's selection allows the reader to experience the many different facets of this genius: Poe as poet, as critic, as mystery writer, as science fiction pioneer, as satirist, and, of course, as seminal master of horror.

Of course, no selective presentation of Poe will please everybody. I'm sure that most Poe enthusiasts will bemoan the absence of a favorite piece from this collection. Personally, I missed "The Gold-Bug," one of the stories that most impacted me as a young reader many years ago. But Thompson has packed a diverse cross-section of great material into a fairly compact space. You'll find such essential triumphs as "the Raven," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

This edition includes both a good bibliography and a chronology of Poe's life. "Great Short Works" is a good resource for both the general reader and for classroom use.

I want to make this short and simple. If you want a good feeling for what Poe has to offer you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Poe has the neatest writing style........1999-02-01

I love this book. I like being able to sit down for a few minutes and get through a whole story.

Some of the stories I liked the most were: A Descent Into the Maelstrom. The Masque of the Red Death. The Black Cat. The Premature Burial. Some Words with a Mummy. The Cask of Amontillado. Shadow-A Parable. Silence-A Fable.

These are just a few of the tales, and none of the poems. One thing I noticed is that some of Poe's tales have the same basic idea to them. They've just been written a little different. Like a couple of them have the give himself away at the end because he thinks people can hear the heart of the dead person beating. There's a few other similarities between stories too, but you'll just have to read them to find out.

A Descent Into the Maelstrom was very good. Poe did a great job describing the "situation". As he did on Silence-A Fable too.

If you like Poe, this is a great summary of his works.

                                                  Book Description

Animal Advocacy and Englishwomen, 1780-1900 focuses on women writers and their struggle to protect animals from abuse in the transition from preindustrial to Victorian society. Looking critically at the work of Sarah Trimmer, Susanna Watts, Elizabeth Heyrick, Anna Sewell, and Frances Power Cobb, Moira Ferguson explores the links between Britain's evolving self-definition and the debate over the humane treatment of animals. Ferguson contends that animal-advocacy writing during this period provided a means for women to register their moral outrage over national problems extending far beyond those of animal abuse, effectively allowing them to achieve a public voice as citizens.
The writers in question represent multiple genres, time frames, and political approaches. Taken together, their productive lives span more than a century. They are ideologically divided on animal protection, and their political identities range from conservative Anglican Tories to radical reformers. Through their plural discourses on animal advocacy, these women actively participated in an ongoing humanitarian struggle that forged a connection between Englishness and kindness to animals, intensifying as industry and empire advanced, and effectively linked gender with national identity and self-definition. Their concerns resonate in a global as well as a national context; cruelty to animals emerges as a metaphor for imperial predation. In this sense, the writings constitute a gendered response to an evolving colonial discourse about others.
Moira Ferguson is James E. Ryan Professor of English and Women's Literature, University of Nebraska. Her books include Subject to Others: Colonial Slavery, 1670-1834; Colonialism and Gender: Relations from Mary Wollstonecraft to Jamaica Kincaid; East Caribbean Connections; and The History of Mary Prince, A West Indian Slave, Related by Herself.
