3 out of 5 stars walking the hair path.......2002-02-15

Recovering from economic recession is just like walking in a hair path. Not everyone has absolutely the same capability. But no one save until he makes it. So read the book and one may try to win or to loose. This is the price on should pay.

If you are looking for a resource that explains the various methods of charitable giving and can be used to help donors (or beginning development professionals) determine which is the best approach or instrument for their personal use, "Investing in Charity" can be a most helpful addition to your library.

The authors promote the book by claiming it is written for modest as well as wealthy donors. Personally, I believe this book can best be used to help donors who are considering "major" gifts or who plan to make a large number of significant gifts. The book can help them determine how to maximize the impact of their giving for their favorite charities and themselves. Even though the introductory chapters on donor motivation, selecting a charity and how charities function are too simplistic for a major donor, the rest of the book can be very valuable as it relates to the various methods of giving.

I especially liked the way the authors go into detail on planned gifts, trusts, and annuities. They give excellent explanations of the variety, benefits and liabilities of each method, from the perspective of the charity and the donor. The sections on tax implications are also presented in clear and helpful terms.

Equally helpful, are their chapters on Private Foundations, Supporting Organizations and Donor-Advised Philanthropic Funds.

Planned giving, estate planning, trusts, gifts of closely held stock, gifts of non cash assets, insurance, etc. can be complicated and overwhelming. Helping a potential donor understand how they work and the benefits of these instruments could turn, what would have been a 5 figure gift, into a 6 or 7 figure gift.

Each chapter ends with a helpful checklist and series of questions which can help direct the donor to the sources contained therein. In addition, examples are given of specific language which can be used for those who want to deed property or make testamentary gifts. Helpful information is also given on the use of charitable giving as a tool to enhance retirement planning.

An extensive index at the end, adds to the usefulness of the book as a resource guide.

This book will get good use in my library. I give it 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Accurate, But Dull and Incomplete.......2001-10-03

This book does enable donors to learn and accurately negotiate the technical details of sophisticated charitable giving, but it stops short of really guiding or "empowering" them. For one, it fails to celebrate and build upon the motivating excitement of why donors give and how the nonprofit sector is so vital and inspiring. Example: The words policy or advocacy are never mentioned as charitable options or types of programs. It's a dull read: donors must practice "due diligence." The message: giving money away is such hard, complicated, serious boring work you will wonder what happened to the joy of giving and the joy of charitable results. Second, the authors inexplainably ignore the option of using community foundations. Third, much valuable information is omitted: There isn't any mention of the many services of the Council of Foundations or similar helpful organizations. Are 501(c)(4) organizations eligible for gifts? We're not told. In the whole text I could find only two web sites mentioned! Nor does the book offer any referral section or recommended reading. Venture philanthropy - no mention! Fourth, instructing donors they "must" visit the charity's site, meet its executive team, AND examine all its core literature before deciding to give is extreme. Ugh.

          Book Description

In recent years, bioethicists have worked on government commissions, on ethics committees in hospitals and nursing homes, and as bedside consultants. Because ethical knowledge is based on experience within the field rather than on universal theoretical propositions, it is open to criticism for its lack of theoretical foundation. Once in the clinic, however, ethicists noted the extent to which medical practice itself combined the certitudes of science with craft forms of knowledge. In an effort to forge a middle path between pure science and applied medical and ethical knowledge, bioethicists turned to the work of classical philosophy, especially the theme of a practical wisdom that entails a variable knowledge of particulars.

In this book contemporary bioethicists and scholars of ancient philosophy explore the import of classical ethics on such pressing bioethical concerns as managed care, euthanasia, suicide, and abortion. Although the contributors write within the limits of their own disciplines, through cross references and counterarguments they engage in fruitful dialogue.

                Book Description

This fascinating book explains why the materials we can see and touch behave as they do. In a completely nontechnical style, using only basic arithmetic, the author explains how the properties of materials result from the way they are composed of atoms and why it is they have the properties they do: for example, why copper and rubies are colored, why metals conduct heat better than glass, why magnets attract an iron nail but not a brass pin, and how superconductors are able to conduct electricity without resistance. The book is intended for general readers, and uses mainly words, pictures and analogies, with only a minimum of very simple mathematics. The author explains how it is possible to understand the basic properties of matter, and translates the technical jargon of physics into a language that can be understood by anyone with an interest in science who wants to know why the world around us behaves in the way that it does.

1 out of 5 stars Really a no good book.......2007-03-20

This book is the worst book I ever purchased I want my money back

                5 out of 5 stars Very Clear.......2002-07-04

This book provides a clear and interesting description of how quantum mechanics explains the workings and properties of light and matter. Learn why copper is the color it is and why glass is transparent to light, among other things. These explanations are provided in a mostly non-mathematical way but at the same time are not fluff. Its nice to see a book explain how quantum theory effects everyday life instead of the usual round of mystical pronouncements. I was actually surprised at how engaging the book was, actually at times I could hardly put it down. Hard to believe getting all that interested into why things are the way they are but if you are interested in physics and engineering you will find this an enjoyable book. I would like to see the author write more books on other aspects of physics and quantum theory.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Big Book.......2002-03-11

Most people may find certain aspects of Physics as overbearing , too confusing, and mathematically FORBIDING.Anybody who has studied Physics knows that Quantum Physics is the foundation of modern physics.I found this book inviting, imformative, and very helpful in my self study of modern physics ,without the mazes of mathematical formulations, matrics, transformations, and operators overcoming my train of thought. The skill of the author as a writer makes this book a smooth and educating read.I recommend this book to anybody interested in physics.

4 out of 5 stars very smooth explanations.......2001-08-10

This is very interesting book about somee selected concepts and physics of the materials. There are no formulas, everything is in narrative format. Author starts with crystal structures, particle wave concepts, atom, some quantum mechanical concepts and than application of quantum concepts to heat transfer, magnetism, conduction, electric current and super conductivity.Author provides very nice descriptive pictures and diagrams. Any one who wants to read more about similar subjects with more formulas, still easy reading could also profit from " Understanding Properties of Matter by De posta".

5 out of 5 stars Quantum Mechanics made Understandable.......2001-06-24

I am a network engineer with little rememberance of my college physics. I'm in the process of reacquainting myself with physics and picked up this book. I found it exceptionally interesting, understandable, well explained, and well illustrated. The development is exceptionally smooth, starting from first principles and carefully building concepts. It was sophisticated enough so that there is real meat, not just fluff. I feel it has prepared me to dive into more rigorous QM textbooks because I have an understanding of some of the consequences of QM.

                                Book Description

By nature, human beings seek to make sense of their past. Paradoxically, true historical explanation is ultimately impossible. Historians never have complete evidence from the past, nor is their methodology rigorous enough to prove causal links. Although it cannot be proven that 'A caused B,' by redefining the agenda of historical discourse, scholars can locate events in time and place history once again at the heart of intellectual activity.

In Past Futures, Ged Martin advocates examining the decisions that people take, most of which are not the result of a 'process,' but are reached intuitively. Subsequent rationalizations that constitute historical evidence simply mislead. All historians can do is to locate them in time, to explain not why a decision was taken, but why then? To illustrate, Martin asks a number of questions: What is a 'long time' in history? Are we close to the past or remote from it? Is democracy a recent experiment, or proof of our arrival at the end of a journey through time? Can we engage in a historical dialogue with the past without making clear our own ethical standpoints? Although explanation is ultimately impossible, humankind can make sense of its location in time through the concept of 'significance,' a device for highlighting events and aspects of the past. In so doing, Martin suggests a radical new approach to historical discourse.

                                  Book Description

Through changing times, from slavery to the present, freedom has meant different things for the African American. Yet, education has always been seen as crucial to obtaining true freedom and equality for all African American people. This book attempts to look at the African American struggle for racial equality and socio-economic equity from Reconstruction to today, by focusing on African American educators who persevered in this struggle and the philosophy which guided their practices. The book has a special focus on the role of adult education in this struggle. In this updated edition of Freedom Road a new chapter has been added that explores the role that Malcolm X, a minister in the Nation of Islam and civil rights activist, played as an adult educator. Today educators are beginning to recognize that lifelong learning will play a critical role in an ever-changing society. This book, therefore, lends a historical perspective to contemporary issues in education.
