This is an innovative analysis of the relationship between women's economic opportunity and marriage in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It is based on an intensive study of York and Yorkshire, but also utilizes evidence from other parts of England and continental Europe. P. J. P. Goldberg explores the role of women in the economy and the part that marriage played in their lives. Importantly, he challenges the Wrigley and Schofield thesis of nuptiality: his analysis of the demography of marriage demonstrates that in late medieval Yorkshire, women participated strongly in the labour force, deferring marriage or avoiding it entirely. This is a stimulating and intelligent book, which makes an important contribution to our understanding of medieval ways of life.

Inspiring.......1999-11-20

I read this book as a child in Poland in the early 70s. It has always had a special place in my heart. It is the best physics book I ever had a pleasure to read (I am not a physisist). Truly inspiring.

Essential Study Aid.......1999-11-18

Perhaps more for those who have already studied physics, although of interest to anyone with an inquiring mind. This book provides an invaluable way of looking at the physical world and forming logical arguments to arrive at the theories we learn in a physics degree. Included is a wonderful look at the ancient Greek studies of astronomy, from measuring the Earth to getting some idea of how far away the sun is. Written before the Feynman Lectures, and in some ways better, since it deals with the fundamentals in a more concrete fashion. Definitely needs a reprint, hungry minds are being starved! And I want my own copy!

This history of the Bengal Famine of 1943 describes the interplay of politics, economics, sociology and military policy, which caused a famine due to a lack of cash, not a lack of food. The Famine, whose story is almost unknown due to wartime censorship by the British, occurred because of a hyperinflation in the price of rice caused by the provisioning for the major offensive against the Japanese on IndiaÂ's eastern borders. Relief efforts were halfhearted because much of the countryside was in a state of endemic revolt against the British. The logistical problems caused by massive gifts of food by the British and Indian troops to the starving people threatened to stall the forthcoming offensive. The cause of the Famine was the deadly alienation between the Bengalis and their British rulers.

A rather free translation, but that's allright.......2001-03-29

Those of you who can read French, consider buying the work by Henri Gougand, la Chanson de la croisade albigeoise, because this one contains the original document on the left, and the translation on the right. But that doesn't mean Shirley's translation is bad, it is a translation that doesn't match the rhyme that Guillame (William) de Tudéla and his anonymous successor used. In fact, Shirley's translation is more readable than the original manuscript and offers in depth details that the other chroniquer of the Albigensian crusade, Pierre the Vaux-des-Cernay, does not mention. The introduction by Janet Shirley is one of the most compact and informative written pieces on this subject yet. And the story itself is still readable after almost seven centuries. Those who are intrested in the Albigensian Crusade, and want to have a look at a genuine source should consider buying this translation

Fun and intriguing read.......2007-01-05

Anyone remotely interested in the brain, neuroscience, or just science in general may enjoy this book. It is written in an informal, conversational style. At times the author gets slightly carried away with her own wit, but her personality does keep the book lively. The contents of the book could be described as a broad survey of the various aspects of (at the time) the current understanding of the brain -- intertwined around a series of relevant interviews with some of the notable researchers in the field.

Read this book when you're young---.......2001-10-22

In another lifetime, I would have studied neurobiology--and this book would have been what inspired me. I read this book a decade ago, and recently re-read it. It's still as good; and is enhanced by Asimov's forward. The book touches on the relationship between who we are physically, and what we think. There are chapters explaining the intricate link between our senses (visual perception and sound, for example--how sound can sometime produce 'colors').

The Three-Pound Universe discusses madness, heaven and hell, god, the neurobiology of madness, altered states of consciousness....it touches on a lot, without going too in depth. It was a great introduction, one that inspired me to read more on the subject. If this book had been published in the 1980's, and I had stumbled on it in high school, it could have changed my life.

This is one of those books that end up profoundly affecting your life and your world view. I changed the direction of my career because of things I read in here. Take a chance and read it. You will never view the world quite the same again. It led me to read at least ten more books that were mentioned in it and they were great too. Reading this book is really a worthwhile way to spend your time.

Great start, gets bogged down for the long haul........1998-09-24

This book really seemed promising, with a great title and a very fine first 50 pages or so. But then it sort of gets lost, meandering through a survey of all sorts of disconnected research material. It seems to be saying the same things over and over, pozing interesting questions along the way, but always just leaving them on the table and moving on. I had to fight to read the last 50 pages (I hate not finishing books). Good cover and publishing job.

I have a head injured son and I have made it an avocation to study the brain and how it works. Out of the dozens of books I've read - this is the most exhaustive and thorough book I've seen. More importantly, the material covers everything you'd want to know about our minds including psychology, philosophy as well as the physiology. It's entertaining as well as informative. I keep giving my copies away so I keep having to buy more. I highly recommend this book - for the uninformed as well as the most knowledgable of experts. It's hard to find another book as comprehensive.
