        Book Description

Although criminal justice systems vary greatly around the world, one theme has emerged in all western jurisdictions in recent years: a rise in both the rhetoric and practice of severe punishment at a time when public opinion has played a pivotal role in sentencing policy and reforms. Despite the differences among jurisdictions, startling commonalities exist among the five countries-the U.K., USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand--surveyed here. Drawing on the results of representative opinion surveys and other research tools the authors map public attitudes towards crime and punishment across countries and explore the congruence between public views and actual policies. Co-authored by four distinguished sentencing policy experts, Penal Populism and Public Opinion is a clarion call for limiting the influence of penal populism and instituting more informed, research- based sentencing policies across the western world.

                  Book Description

Methuselah Flies presents a trailblazing project on the biology of aging. It describes research on the first organisms to have their lifespan increased, and their aging slowed, by hereditary manipulation. These organisms are fruit flies from the species Drosophila melanogaster, the great workhorse of genetics. Michael Rose and his colleagues have been able to double the lifespan of these insects, and improved their health in numerous respects as well. The study of these flies with postponed aging is one of the best means we have of understanding, and ultimately achieving, the postponement of aging in humans. As such, the carefully presented detail of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control of aging.

                  Methuselah Flies:
§ is a tightly edited distillation of twenty years of work by many scientists
§ contains the original publications regarding the longer-lived fruit flies
§ offers commentaries on each of the topics covered — new, short essays that put the individual research papers in a wider context
§ gives full access to the original data
§ captures the scientific significance of postponed aging for a wide academic audience

                      Book Description

On the 50th anniversary of Yang-Mills theory, this invaluable volume looks back at the developments and achievements in elementary particle physics that ensued from that beautiful idea.

During the last five decades, Yang-Mills theory, which is undeniably the most important cornerstone of theoretical physics, has expanded widely. It has been investigated from many perspectives, and many new and unexpected features have been uncovered from this theory. In recent decades, apart from high energy physics, the theory has been actively applied in other branches of physics, such as statistical physics, condensed matter physics, nonlinear systems, etc. This makes the theory an indispensable topic for all who are involved in physics.

An international team of experts, each of whom has left his mark on the developments of this remarkable theory, contribute essays or more detailed technical accounts to this volume. These articles highlight the new discoveries from the respective authors' perspectives. The distinguished contributors are: S Adler, F A Bais, C Becchi, M Creutz, A De Rújula, B S DeWitt, F Englert, L D Faddeev, P Hasenfratz, R Jackiw, A Polyakov, V N Popov, R Stora, P van Baal, P van Nieuwenhuizen, S Weinberg, F Wilczek, E Witten, C N Yang. Included in each article are introductory and explanatory remarks by the editor, G 't Hooft, who is himself a major player in the development of Yang-Mills theory.

                            Book Description

Providing a comprehensive discussion of the polymathic writer and thinker Ernest Gellner, this book presents a lucid exposition of his thought, making clear both his major contributions to the diverse areas in which he worked and the underlying consistency and unity of his thought. Examined is how Gellner's analysis of the social, economic, and cognitive forms intrinsic to modernity carries forward the work of Max Weber and Karl Popper and also enables him to develop a profound and original philosophy of science which is at the same time a political philosophy.

This set of essays is concerned with the explanation of large scale social change. Concentration is on the social stagnation characteristic of agrarian circumstances, the conditions for exit from that world, and the varied social orders that inhabit, sometimes precariously, the modern world community. The distinguished contributors from archaeology, anthropology, sociology, economic history and philosophy, have all been stimulated by the work of Ernest Gellner, and the essays are in dialogue with his view of our social condition.

Chiefs of Nations: First Edition: The Cherokee Nation 1730 to 1839—109 years of Political Dialogue and Treaties brings to light an abundance of uncharted and detrimental facts that serve as testimonial…changing the history of the Cherokee Nation.

Covering the Colonial period with new and fresh accounts taken directly from the Colonial records to the onset of the federal period with the United States, as recorded in the minutes of the 1st to 17th congress; Chiefs of Nations radiates to the publics need for truth and realistic coverage between the United States and Indian Nations; once governed by traditional governments—populating the entire continent, of the United States of America.

Both technical and dramatic, Chiefs of Nations, unlike other books such as, Browns Old Frontiers, Cherokee Tragedy, The Cherokees, Trail of Tears (The rise and fall of the Cherokee Nation): Chiefs of Nations, discovers the actual causes that led to the acts and resolves of Congress, for the expansion of the Southeastern States and Territories—into the Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations boundaries.

Populated with fully quoted documents from the Federal Records and unedited Treaties, Chiefs of Nations, reveals the shocking truth: exposing the contentions between rival factions and the development of an insurgent political party in 1825, that ultimately gained control of the Cherokee Nation, and released claim to all their remaining lands in 1835.

1 out of 5 stars Impossible to Read.......2007-01-10

This book is so poorly written it is virtually impossible to read. I slogged through it by training myself to ignore all punctuation but my mother stopped trying after the first few pages. It is as if there is some software program the author used that just inserts punctuation randomly so that nothing makes any sense. There are also multiple misspellings and misuses of language. Example: "Cherokee, war units on active duty--remained at Winchester"; "The first being the convention between Georgia and South Carolina: for the purpose of creating a boarder for Georgia that extended up to North Carolinas Southern boarder."

I am shocked that this book was published this way. Whatever happened to editing?

5 out of 5 stars Cherokee Nation Cover - Up.......2006-06-09

This book offers extensive Colonial records which reveals a fabricated and distressing history of the Cherokee Nation. Included are broken Treaties, land cessions, annuities not received, as well as various letters from Officers and Native leaders.

You will see evidence of distorted facts and misrepresentations of Cherokee history. Documented Federal records bear overwhelming evidence of falsified information. The author does an excellent job discussing the inadequacies of historical reference books and their apparent cover-up of the Cherokee Nations history.

                              Book Description

Famed in story as "the great leviathans," sperm whales are truly creatures of extremes. Giants among all whales, they also have the largest brains of any creature on Earth. Males can reach a length of sixty-two feet and can weigh upwards of fifty tons.

With this book, Hal Whitehead gives us a clearer picture of the ecology and social life of sperm whales than we have ever had before. Based on almost two decades of field research, Whitehead describes their biology, behavior, and habitat; how they organize their societies; and how their complex lifestyles may have evolved in this unique environment. Among the many fascinating topics he explores is the crucial role that culture plays in the life of the sperm whale, and he traces the consequences of this argument for both evolution and conservation. Finally, drawing on these findings, Whitehead builds a general model of how the ocean environment influences social behavior and cultural evolution among mammals as well as other animals.

The definitive portrait of a provocative creature, Sperm Whales will interest animal behaviorists, conservationists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists as well as marine mammalogists.

Sperm Whales:Social Evolution in the Ocean is one of the most informative books about odontocetes i have come to read in past two years about cetaceans.Mr. Whitehead's book i consider to be perhaps one of the greatest texts about toothed whales since the ground-breaking work of Ken Norris' The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin. This is the only book you will find about sperm whales that truly brings you into the realm of this amazing creature. Believe me, all other books relating about this animal pale in comparison to this wonderful work by arguably the greatest cetologist of our day.
