Book Description
The debate over "Britain in decline" still rages in the academic, political and public spheres. In this concise undergraduate book, B.W.E. Alford examines Britain's economic development within a framework of political, social and cultural factors, including topics such as the alleged process of deindustrialization, the role of sterling, labor relations and the impact of government policy. Professor Alford provides a clear and essential introduction to the subject, yet shows how complex and deep-rooted are the causes of the "British Disease."

Customer Reviews:
Caught their attention.......2005-07-31
I read this to a group of first graders and it was a great recall story. We had a good conversation about how the farmer would feel and how his wife was feeling after each event. It was also good for sequencing.... as a group read in a classroom...I can recommend this to kindergarten- grade 2 teachers.
Still making me chuckle.......2002-10-20
I read this story several years ago, and it still makes me laugh when I think about it today. Any book that has such long-lasting ability to make somebody smile is well worth checking out. The last scene, when the rancher brings his wife a box of Crackerjack from the town and then what she finds inside is a perfect ending to a delightful story.
Nice premise, but needs more of a plot.......2000-10-19
A tall tale contrasting what happens to Rancher Hicks and his spouse Elna. Hicks goes to visit his very dull town and neighbors. . . MEANWHILE, back at the ranch, fantastic surprises await Elna (she wins a prize, her dog has puppies, inherits a winning lottery present, rebuilds the entire ranch, etc.). The back-and-forth contrast is amusing, but ultimately this is somewhat of a one-joke book, which may lose its appeal fairly quickly.
Meanwhile Back at the Ranch.......2000-05-08
I love this book! It is a wonderful book of surprises. Even a college class enjoyed listening to it being read. The humor of what happens in the town and what happens at the ranch will be sure to capture the attention of many. Young and Old!
Teaching Suggestions about this book.......2000-02-18
Meanwhile back at the Ranch offers a delightful opportunity for teachers to introduce the concept of parallel story plots. The story is about a rancher who visits a sleepy little town. Back at the ranch his wife is having an exciting time by winning freezers, receiving a winning lotto ticket, becoming a movie star, striking oil, and receiving a visit from the President. The story moves from town to ranch and back again with the transition phrase..."Meanwhile...back at the ___. This can be used in a story line where the students write about the principal or their teacher attending a conference or meeting while back at the school many things are happening. This book provides a springboard for writing that students find irresistable. Middle schoolers and high schoolers find the pattern of the book delightful to follow and often invent extremely humorous situations that happen back at school. For a great writing activity, introduce this book to your class.

Book Description
In 1935, Nikola Tesla revealed that an earthquake in the region of his New York laboratory in 1898 was the result of a machine he had been experimenting with. This book presents his technology based on sonic vibrations. Now for the first time the secrets of the Tesla Oscillator are available to both the layman and advanced researcher.
Customer Reviews:
A place to start.......2006-10-12
The book has loads of theory. The plans for an oscillator are fair and will give you a place to start. A mention is made that it resembles a modern control solenoid, agreed, but perhaps should include salvaging parts from other such items to build up one. Im sure it could be done, and once again this book gives a start. In any case it does show how to use a commercially available air vortex unit for heat and cooling, in conjunction with the oscillating device.
Attention all mechanical engineers?!.......2005-11-22
Well...I have the book, I'm an aerospace engineer, I've made a living over the past several years reverse-engineering the Tesla Turbine and Pump, and, I must say - I personally like this book.
The mechanical drawings are well worth the measly price of the book, alone. Drawing from lack of true patent info regarding the amazing "Earth Quake Machine" (which we KNOW Tesla did, in fact, invent), the authors do a very nice job at interpretation. Now...I would believe if someone took these drawings and input the CAD info, we could go from there and find out how accurate they are. A true working mechanical oscillator would quite literally "shake" things up a bit.
Anyway...again, I did like this book. Take it for what it is - an attempt to explain an invention of probably one of the greatest inventors of all time - Nikola Tesla...Tesla's mechanical oscillator.
Earthquake machine.......2005-06-24
I was hoping that this book would shed some light on the concept of creating artificial earthquakes. Instead, it was loaded with ideas and inventions that had NOTHING to do with Tesla's Earthquake machine. There is one little chapter, and they should seriously change the name of the book.
Where is the real information?.......2000-07-28
Upon discovering there was actually a book on this subject, Tesla's famous earthquake machine; I was amazed. Tesla is my favorite inventor and I have been interested in building his device for years. But I was sadly disappointed when I read this book. The stories and information are repeated multiple times throughout the book, the instructions are only really a set of diagrams, and overall - this book was a complete letdown. Hopefully someone will someday redeem this poor account for Tesla's technology.
Some good info but misleading title........1999-02-03
The first part of the book covers Tesla's mechanical oscillator (principle of operation, etc.). Later, a series of blueprints are presented to detail the construction of a small oscillator. A knowledgable person with access to machining equipment should be able to construct one with the information provided. It will not, however, guide you through the proccess! It simply presents the "bare bones" info. After that, the book strays from its title. There is some rather strange talk about alternative religion and some Zen philosophy stuff. Then, were shown text and construction info for some other neat devices (heat pump, motors, etc.). Anyone who enjoys science or wants to build an "Earthquake Machine" will probably be satisfied with the content. Be prepared for some of the off topic discussion though.

Book Description
Born in Oakland, California, in 1910, the young Toshio Mori dreamed of being an artist, a Buddhist missionary, and a baseball player. Instead, he grew flowers in the family nursery business, andinfluenced by contemporaries such as Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Heming-way produced a body of extraordinary fiction. His well-crafted, humorous, wise tales celebrate the Japanese American community he knew so well, and reach beyond it to describe the essential human condition. The promise of a writing career was tragically interrupted when the publication of his first collection of short stories, Yokohama, California, was cancelled after the United States entered World War II. Mori was soon on his way from Oakland to Topaz, Utahone of 110,000 citizens of Japanese descent held in internment camps between 1941 and 1944. When Yokohama, California was finally published in 1949, Toshio Mori was, at last, able to claim his place as "one of the most important new writers in the country" (William Saroyan). Unfinished Message includes fifteen stories, a novella, letters, photographs, and an interview with Toshio Mori. Some of this material has never before been published.

Customer Reviews:
excellent framework to begin study of Chinese philosophy.......2003-10-17
Dr. Mote's monograph outlines the foundations of Chinese thought from Confucius (551-479 BC) through the bureaucratic innovations of the first dynasty (the Ch'in, 221-206 BC). The book covers early Chinese cosmology, Confucianism and its derivative schools, Taoism, Mohism, and the pragmatic successes of history's first totalitarian government -- the Ch'in State. It does not attempt to cover later influences such as Buddhism.
The actual text is short (114 pages) so Dr. Mote must use a concise (and occasionally dense) style to cover all this ground. When the reader finishes this book he is rewarded with an introductory understanding of each of these philosophies, how they developed, and how they influenced each other. An excellent jumping-off point for further studies. (Uses Wade-Giles and earlier romanizations).

Book Description
This ambitious work focuses on the world of Chinese thought during the Chunqiu (Springs and Autumns) period (722-451 B.C.E.), the two and a half centuries directly preceding and partly overlapping the time of Confucius, China's single most influential thinker. Ideas developed by Chunqiu statesmen and thinkers formed the intellectual milieu of Confucius and his disciples and contributed directly to the intellectual flowering of the Zhanguo (Warring States) era (453-221 B.C.E.), the formative period of the Chinese intellectual tradition. This study is the first attempt to systematically reconstruct major intellectual trends in pre-Confucian China.
Foundations of Confucian Thought is based on an exploration of the Zuo zhuan, the largest pre-imperial historical text. Relying on meticulous textual and linguistic analysis, Yuri Pines argues that hundreds of the speeches of Chunqiu statesmen recorded in the Zho zhuan were not invented by the compiler of the treatise but reproduced from earlier sources, thus making it an authentic reflection of the Chunqiu intellectual tradition. By tracing changes in ideas and concepts throughout the Chunqiu period, Pines reconstructs the dynamics of contemporary political and ethical discourse, distilling major intellectual impulses that Chunqiu thinkers bequeathed to their Zhanguo descendants.

A Brilliant and Humorous Expose of Deluded Science.......2005-08-29
There is little I can add to the excellent comments already presented here. The only thing that could have improved this volume would have been a bibliography.
An excellent, curious collection.......2005-07-10
Gardner, in his usual fine style, tackles biorhythms, ESP, quantum theory, black holes, faith healing, and much more. The collection also includes letters from readers and the author's replies, which make the book especially intriguing. A large collection of fascinating topics.
The simple, effective arguments against pseudoscience.......2003-12-06
I first read this book almost twenty years ago and even though some of the events and principals have faded into oblivion, the basic theme has not. While there are some negative consequences of science, in many ways they are secondary to the enormous benefits. The number of ways in which the scientific approach has benefited our lives are clearly too numerous to mention. And yet, there are those who, largely for personal gain, choose to ignore it when it is advantageous to do so. When that advantage is financial, we can at least understand them, even while we consider them despicable. The saddest of all are the ignorant masses who fall victim to the nonsense that the charlatans dispense.
In this book, Gardner primarily takes on the purveyors of pseudoscientific nonsense rather than the followers, debunking ESP, UFOs and other views that fly in the face of mountains of scientific data that has been painstakingly accumulated and repeatedly verified. There are simple, effective counter arguments against most of the areas of pseudoscience, and Gardner quite effectively makes them, at times properly separating the arguments when they need to be separated. For example, the idea of life after death and mediums communicating with the dead are two separate issues. One can expose the false medium without proving that there is no life after death. It would be so simple for any departed spirit to send a special message that would be conclusive proof that they were alive, and yet no medium has ever managed to do it. The best that is offered is a general "all is good here" style of drivel, which means nothing.
My favorites in these stories are always those that invoke the giant conspiracy explanation of events. Especially hilarious are the proponents of UFOs who firmly believe that the U.S. government has conspired for over fifty years to hide information about crashed alien space ships. I am the first to admit that governments lie to the people, but to believe that such a secret could be kept for so long is ridiculous.
The entire scientific world owes a debt to Martin Gardner for his courage in taking on those who are either very gullible or who are willing to prey on the gullible, all in the name of pseudoscience. To me, the wonders of science dwarf the petty "accomplishments" of the crackpots and sleazeballs he writes about in this book. Much of it is human nature at its' worst.
How can people ignore the evidence?.......2002-02-20
Great book. Kept me fascinated throughout. Prefer Michael Shermer, but I loved this one nonetheless.
A must have for critical thinkers.......2000-08-26
A classic compendium from the skeptic of skeptics, Martin Gardner. Though the book is now a little dated, the articles and essays on the dubious psychic "research" conducted by Targ and Puthoff are classic examples of why people believe in bizarre things simply because they want them to be true. This should be required reading for high-school and college students.

Book Description
"At one time cannibals in New Guinea believed they could absorb the skills and knowledge of their enemies by eating their brains."
Believe it or not, in the 1950s and 1960s competent scientists actually tested an "edible memory theory." Only through the time-honored tradition of scientists cross-checking one another's results did the theory get discarded.
Science is everywhere! It's astonishing to what extent it pervades our lives, influencing us on a daily basis. But there is a lot of faulty and phony research, and it's difficult for the public to discern what science is good and what is false or misleading.
Nibbling on Einstein's Brain takes a fun yet informative look at the scientific facts that constantly bombard us.
How can we equip ourselves to better judge what is good and what is suspect? First we must examine how good science works. And don't worry, there is plenty of good science out there. You'll learn how to follow a "scientific method" for developing theories, designing research to test those theories, and analyzing the results in order to reach conclusions. You'll be amazed at how fascinating the process can be. Now go back: is the initial theory still sound? Good science is always checked and rechecked, both by the original scientist and by others in the field.
Plenty of tips are offered on how to be discerning when it comes to science. Chapters are organized into specific themes to help the reader become a skilled scientific watchdog:
Science Watch
21 "Baloney Busters" look at how science can go wrong (sometimes in hilarious ways). A checklist of things to watch for ends the chapter.
Media Watch
Since most of us rely on the media to learn about scientific advances, how can we tell when something is reliable? "Media Alerts" examine how reporting can confuse or misrepresent science. Tips on how to be a smart consumer of news and products are recapped in a final checklist.
Mind Watch
"Mind Traps" explore how the human mind -- your mind -- can muddle the science news you receive. There are hints on how to look critically at science research and how to doubt while still keeping an open mind. A mind-trap question checklist finishes things off.
The engaging text is perfectly geared to middle readers and is complemented by amusing illustrations and a lively design. Numerous sidebars throughout feature intriguing facts, examples of experiments, humorous tales, and provocative quotes from scientists, astronomers, and philosophers. Kids are encouraged to question the process of science so they can separate the good from the bad. A list of recommended books, magazines, and Internet sites as well as a glossary of terms complete this illuminating exploration of science and how it enters our everyday world.

Superb Lessons in Critical Thinking.......2002-10-25
This book is the best thing for kids since peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were invented. It is illustrated, amusing, and fun to read even for adults. It's a complete short course in how to think, and how not to be fooled. Its advice applies to evaluating advertising, pseudoscientic claims, and what your teachers tell you. Hey, kids! Grownups can be wrong! Kids are encouraged not to accept everything they hear at face value; it is empowering to kids to know that they can use their own "baloney detectors." BUY IT! For your children, your grandchildren, to donate to the nearest school or library, or to read for yourself.

This wonderful book contains both the best evidence that the sinking of the Titanic was perceived in advance by extrasensory perception, and the best scientific assessment of that ESP evidence.
Exhibit A is the weirdly prescient Morgan Robertson novel published 14 years before the 1912 calamity, The Wreck of the Titan (originally published as Futility). From early-20th-century spiritualist Ella Wheeler Wilcox to modern woo-woo guru Uri Geller, who helped launch a whole Library of the Supernatural series with the strange coincidences in Robertson's book, people have puzzled over how, as Wilcox put it, Robertson managed to "fix on almost the very name which was afterward given to the ill-fated sea monster."
And there are more than 20 startling similarities between the dread tale of the Titan and the real, subsequent Titanic--both ships, for instance, were considered unsinkable, were the biggest ever, grazed an iceberg on the starboard side near midnight on the New York-England line at just over 22 knots, and were owned by a British firm with headquarters in Liverpool and a branch office in New York. On Broadway, to be eerily specific.
Robertson's story, and the story of his life, are interesting, but what makes this book great is the essay that makes sense of it all. The author (and editor of the book) is Martin Gardner, one of the most fun-to-read science writers ever. He is a fellow of CSICOP, the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, and coauthor of How to Think About Weird Things. (Gardner also urges you to read Michael Shermer's delightfully illuminating Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time.)
Gardner also includes the short story "From the Old World to the New," by W.T. Stead, a spiritualist, whose story features an iceberg-caused shipwreck on the North Atlantic, a captain named Edward J. Smith, and two lovers-at-first-sight named Rose and Jack (Kate Winslet's and Leo DiCaprio's characters' names in the 1998 film). After writing it, Stead boarded the Titanic, run by Capt. Edward J. Smith, and died in the shipwreck. (Key Twilight Zone music.)
Gardner includes other good stuff: a neat, evocative photo of the Titanic's Veranda Cafe, plus poems anticipating and commemorating the disaster, the best being Arthur Conan Doyle's "Ragtime!":
Ragtime! Ragtime! Keep it going still!
Let them hear the ragtime! Play it with a will...
There's glowing hell beneath us where the shattered boilers roar,
The ship is listing and awash, the boats will hold no more...
Don't forget the time, boys! Eyes upon the score!
Never heed the wavelets sobbing down the floor!

Titanic book rises again.......1998-07-15
The following review was printed in Doubting Thomas #1 (reprinted here with permission):
I am a fan of Gardner's work, especially his 1952 Fads & Fallacies in the Name of Science which helped jump start the skeptical movement. Gardner's wit is always refreshing and the curious reader is never disappointed.
So, it was a great pleasure to see this book being offered again after its initial publication in the mid-80s, not long after the remains of Titanic were found by Dr. Robert Ballard....
I would recommend this book in two ways: to read a good critique on precognition on this specific case, and as a selection of century-old literature that cannot be found in many places.
Great book for rationalists!.......1998-05-26
Martin Gardner, acclaimed rationalist, debunks those who would call Robinson psychic. Some of the "amazing coincidences" regarding "The Wreck of the Titan" may in fact be explained by the White Star Line's own news releases! Gardner includes the Robinson story, plus lots of other related Titanic material. Great book.
