Book Description
"Any lawyer who deals within the Black community needs to read it."
--New York Amsterdam News
"Within Harris's reasoned, cogent analysis lurks a legal strategy tethered to the nation's tattered and perennial traditions of white supremacy, which aims to acknowledge it, use it to explain its devastating effects on the black psyche, and provide a legal tool for some degree of amelioration. Ultimately,
Black Rage Confronts the Law is more about U. S. power relations than law. Therefore, it will be damned. Therefore, it will be praised. Therefore, it should be read."
--Mumia Abu-Jamal,Author of Live from Death Row
On a deeper and more profound level [this book] illustrates the degree to which social and economic hardship and deprivation can justify human misconduct.--Library Journal
Paul Harris made an impact just two years out of law school with his innovative `black rage' defense. Harris convinced the jury that, in America, unemployment for a proud and talented black man can cause . . . a kind of temporary insanity. The theory not only gained Harris's client an acquittal, it left the man's integrity intact. --California Lawyer
In 1971,
Paul Harris pioneered the modern version of the black rage defense when he successfully defended a young black man charged with armed bank robbery. Dubbed one of the most novel criminal defenses in American history by Vanity Fair, the black rage defense is enormously controversial, frequently dismissed as irresponsible, nothing less than a harbinger of anarchy. Consider the firestorm of protest that resulted when the defense for Colin Ferguson, the gunman who murdered numerous passengers on a New York commuter train, claimed it was considering a black rage defense.
In this thought-provoking book, Harris traces the origins of the black rage defense back through American history, recreating numerous dramatic trials along the way. For example, he recounts in vivid detail how Clarence Darrow, defense attorney in the famous Scopes Monkey trial, first introduced the notion of an environmental hardship defense in 1925 while defending a black family who shot into a drunken white mob that had encircled their home.
Emphasizing that the black rage defense must be enlisted responsibly and selectively, Harris skillfully distinguishes between applying an environmental defense and simply blaming society, in the abstract, for individual crimes. If Ferguson had invoked such a defense, in Harris's words, it would have sent a superficial, wrong-headed, blame-everything-on-racism message. Careful not to succumb to easy generalizations, Harris also addresses the possibilities of a white rage defense and the more recent phenomenon of cultural defenses. He illustrates how a person's environment can, and does, affect his or her life and actions, how even the most rational person can become criminally deranged, when bludgeoned into hopelessness by exploitation, racism, and relentless poverty.

Biometric Systems: Technology, Design and Performance Evaluation
ASIN: 1852332433 |
Book Description
Biometric identity verification (BIV) offers a radical alternative to passports, PIN numbers, ID cards and driving licences. It uses physiological or behavioural characteristics such as fingerprints, hand geometry, and retinas to check a person's identity. It is therefore much less open to fraudulent use, which makes it ideal for use in voting systems, financial transactions, benefit payment administration, border control, and prison access.
This is the first book to provide business readers with an easy-to-read, non-technical introduction to BIV systems. It explains the background and then tells the reader how to get their system up and running quickly. It will be an invaluable read for practitioners, managers and IT personnel - in fact for anyone considering, or involved in, implementing a BIV system.
Julian Ashbourn was one of the pioneers in integrating biometric technology and has provided input into many prototype BIV systems around the world.

A technical guide to the future.......2002-04-22
In light of the circumstances following 9-11, this book sheds light on the technological direction that biometrics will provide in identifying the populous.
While these thoughts may send thoughts of "Orwell" in the minds of many readers, the benefits to be gained by utilizing biometric technology will clearly eliminate a substantial amount of fraud and identity theft within our society,
While this book is technocal in nature, it is written in a non-technocal format and focuses much of the attention on the application aspect of the technology. This is a great read for the businessman seeking new venues to employ technical advances into the business process.
A good practical guide.......2001-11-02
This book is a very good practical guide for all those wishing to actually implement biometric systems. It cuts right through to the practical issues and doesn't get lost in unnecessary technical detail. The example project section is especially valuable and gives a great deal of useful and practical information which is not available in purely academic works. For anyone actually designing or using biometric systems, this book is worth its weight in gold
Good for Managers, no for developers.......2001-10-23
This is only an introductory book in biometrics. It doesn't explains neither algorithms nor techniques, only shows some facts of biometrics. I don't recommend this book.
A Great Biometrics Book.......2001-08-29
This is the best overall book on the subject of biometrics for potential users - bar none. For anyone who is interested in actually implenting a biometric system, then this book is essential reading as it covers much more than just the technology and offers much practical insight. The introductory sections make a particularly interesting read and I found the whole book extremely thought provoking and enjoyable from cover to cover. Excellent!
not a useful book.......2001-08-24
This book was disappointing. The presentation of biometrics was very shallow. I wanted to learn more detailed information about biometrics but the treatment in this book was very superficial.

Description:
Back-side contact Au and Ag microelectrodes were used as transducers to construct planar all-solid-state electrodes suitable for flow-through analysis. The microsensors were based on plasticized PVC potassium-selective membranes containing ion-electron conducting polymer-polypyrrole doped with di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate. The proposed technique allowed simple construction of microsensors in one step, by membrane solution casting directly on the surface of the planar metallic transducers. The performance of the microsensors based on Au and Ag transducers were determined and compared with planar sensors based on internal electrolyte immobilized in polyHEMA. The addition of the polypyrrole to the membrane composition did not influence on the selectivity, reproducibility and long-term stability of the microsensors but improved their standard potential stability in time in comparison with coated-wire type sensors. Moreover, all-solid-state microsensors based on Au transducers exhibited better signal stability than Ag based sensors.

I love this book........2003-08-06
Who would think of a 600 year old book being relevant to modern women? But it is. de Pisan provides insight into the mindset of another world (France in the 1400s) as well as engaging observations of women, men, and how they lived in her world. Her ideas and advice still offer insight into modern American culture -- we inherit many influences from mainland Europe and its own history. The richness of her observations of human nature and adept interpolations from her own experience also transcend language and culture barriers. Bear with the old prose and medieval literary trappings. It's fascinating.
A Treasure for all people.......2002-08-18
I personally find this book to be useful for the modern individual as well as the noble lady of the High Middle Ages, with only a very few mental changes. It combines ideals for the mind and soul with practical advice on marriage and running a household. The second section that offers advice for women of every social class down to beggars and prostitutes is fascinating. I find the book pleasant reading -- in fact, I am about to buy a second copy as my first is wearing out, and a copy as a gift for a friend.
I have a different take on this book than some, in that I am a member of an historical re-creation organization that studies and lives Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Christine de Pisan was writing for the woman that I am on the weekends. I tell my fellow historians that I think this book should be a required read for our queens, princesses, and noble ladies, and at least one knight of my aquaintance makes his squires read it as being useful for everyone.
Notice the difference in the titles: Three Virtues and The n.......2001-12-12
Please note that this book is not The Book of the City of Ladies.
The Miss Manners of her Time.......1999-05-29
I'd never heard of this remarkable woman before I bought this book, and I'm shocked that she isn't more publicized. The Treasure of the City of Ladies is a collection of advice for every woman in the medieval world, with none of the segments longer than 1-2 pages. It's not the easiest read in the world, but the advice is relieved with tongue-in-cheek humor. The author's interests are wide, so even though much of her advice refers to nobility, she also covers servants and regular people. This is a great research book for anyone interested in women during this era. I found this book very refreshing because, unlike other writings of the time, it refuses to believe that women are inherently weaker or prone to evil. And surprisingly, much of the author's advice is still applicable today.
Book Description
In this rousing sequel to his classic Can Do! The Story of the Seabees, William Bradford Huie continues the saga of the combat-trained civilian plumbers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, wharf builders, and civil engineers who served in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalions. A lieutenant (j.g.) in the battalions himself, Huie begins this story in 1944 with the battle for Iwo Jima when the Seabees secured the beachhead while braving concentrated enemy fire and lwo's daunting terrain to rig floating causeways, blow up wrecked landing craft, and drive their bulldozers up three terraces that rose from the ocean. This book fully chronicles their heroism, including the unforgettable efforts of the men of the 31st Battalion who crawled the length of a landing strip to pick up shrapnel as Japanese snipers fired away.
Huie does equal justice to the historic actions of the Seabees at Omaha Beach on D-Day, where they manned fifteen hundred vehicles during the first wave of landings at Normandy. His fascinating accounts of the creation and testing of various pierheads, floating bridges, and "Rhino" ferries are laced with colorful stories of moonshining, brawling, and carousing. Huie's stories of the Seabees's accomplishments in World War II are often credited with as inspiring succeeding generations to rise to the same spirit of devotion and loyalty to their task.

Excellent Resource.......2001-07-14
I couldn't put this book down. It provides tips for both the novice and the experienced researcher. It was just the information I needed to begin my family history search and I'm sure I will use it often.
Excellent Starting Point.......2001-07-09
This book will get you far whether your family kept excellent family records or NOT. It discusses and addresses the difficulties most African Americans face in tracing their family history. It provides many tips and resources for obtaining family information.
not as good as I'd hoped.......2001-06-09
The book gives a nice overview of black geneology but it's not the only book you'll need. It's an introduction to the subject. Unless your family kept marvelous records in the old family bible this book won't get you too far.

Book Description
By the year 2000, the USDA predicts that 15 percent-8 million-of our children will be on their way to using Ritalin. In this illuminating investigation of the epidemic of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) today and its most widely prescribed treatment, the powerful psychostimulant Ritalin, psychologist Richard DeGrandpre sounds a warning: we may well be failing our children by treating symptoms and not causes with a quick-fix and ultimately unsatisfactory solution. Drawing on the latest findings from developmental, psychobiological, and social scientific research, DeGrandpre seeks to solve the problem of ADD by "solving" its history. He attributes the disturbing prevalence of inattention and hyperactivity in children to the larger societal consequences of a speed-up culture that has profoundly altered our perceptual expectations, our very experience of time, and our ability to defer gratification. Our society-wide rush to more, and faster, stimulation leaves children especially vulnerable to "sensory addictions." "Ritalin Nation" both exposes the shortsightedness of mere biological explanations of ADD and offers some practical guidelines for charting a more hopeful future in environments that deliberately "make time for time," cultivate a less hurried existence, and promote a saner, safer community for our children.
Customer Reviews:
a different and very worthwhile perspective.......2007-07-25
I had read many other fine books that debunk the ADHD myth, and thought that those other authors had covered all aspects pretty well. However, after reading this book, I was surprised to learn just how much our modern culture of 'I want it now!' plays in promoting inattentive and fidgety behaviour. My only criticism of the book is that it was slow to begin with, but I am glad I stuck with it, because it picked up. I highly recommend this book.
Stimulant medications can reduce symptoms and improve ability to complete tasks.......2006-09-27
I read Dr. Degrandpre's first book before I attended his talk at a local book store. He came across as genuinely kind and sincere, but at the same time I found it frustrating to listen to him tell the audience that AD/HD is not a brain disorder, that it is inappropriate to treat AD/HD with stimulant medication, and that AD/HD is the unfortunate result of the environment that we live in.
Thanks to the support of my husband, I live in an ideal environment and I still struggle with symptoms of AD/HD. Over the past fifteen years, I have met many others like myself, more than 3,000. We exchanged information about what worked, and what didn't. What I learned is that there are many approaches to living with AD/HD symptoms and that when stimulant medication works well, nothing works better.
I also learned that medication alone is not enough for some of us. I experienced additional relief from my symptoms after I added a basic vitamin regimen of a multi, B-complex, C, E, a calcium/magnesium/D/K/mineral formulation, and fish oil. Medication, afterall, does not treat vitamin deficiencies. A good, first read on the benefits of nutritional supplements for the brain is Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper.
It has also helped to follow the advice of others: get enough sleep; eat regular, healthy meals; exercise; treat yourself and others with courtesy and respect; work hard; find time to play; make time for family and friends; and surround yourself with work, people, and interests that "make your heart glad".
All helpful, but the reality is that untreated AD/HD and, to a lesser degree, treated AD/HD - (there is no cure, only a reduction in symptoms) - interfers with the ability to consistently do all of the above.
Living with the symptoms of AD/HD means falling off the horse again and again, and getting right back on if you're smart. I think AD/HD is best described as an "inconsistent performance disorder". Do all people experience this? Yes. Do all people experience this to the same degree that people diagnosed with AD/HD do? No. That's how we define AD/HD as a "difference", a "condition", or a "disorder".
My favorite quote of late is by John Wooden: "Do not let what you cannot do interfer with what you can do.".
I periodically read both pro- and anti-biopsychiatry books. The problem with the books that argue strongly against taking stimulant medication is that they fail to discuss or even acknowledge that there are many people who have improved their quality of life by privately taking stimulant medication over long periods of time. To date, I have not found a better treatment. I think it wrong to discourage people diagnosed with AD/HD from trying the short-acting stimulant medications. If the first stimulant doesn't work well, often the second or third stimulant tried will. It's then just a matter of adjusting the dosage.
If you choose, like I do, to read books with differing viewpoints, I encourage you to read at least one pro-biopsychiatry book. Daniel Amen's book, Healing ADD, provides a fascinating look into what Dr. Amen has learned from the 10,000+ SPECT brain scans of his patients. And it offers guidance on which medications and nutritional supplements to try first for each of the six sub-types of AD/HD that he describes in the book and treats in his medical practice.
For parents, I recommend any book by Mel Levine, M.D. I also recommend the parenting techniques described in Howard Glasser's book, Transforming the Difficult Child, The Nurtured Heart, eventhough it, sadly, like Degrandpre's book, is opposed to treatment with stimulant medication.
And for those adults who continue to struggle with symptoms that sometimes accompany the core symptoms of AD/HD, particularly anxiety and/or anger, many have benefitted from the cognitive-behavioral methods taught by Recovery, Inc. groups throughout the U.S. and elsewhere since the 1930's. Meetings are non-religious, weekly, and are supported by free-will offerings. The group uses the book, Mental Health Through Will Training by Abraham A. Low, M.D. It's very dated, but the principles are as true today as they were then. It's a classic work.
This book has no scientific basis, and it is almst hypocritic!!.......2006-04-25
This book is nostalgic and has no scientific basis on anything.
I do agree with the author in one point: Ritalin is given away without any battery of exams.
The author complains about the fact that society is too fast paced!
The book is highly based on the author's opinion. DO NOT PURCHASE IT if you are trying to find a real sociologial or scientifical explanation for this disorder!
This book might change your life.......2006-02-08
I cannot make a long story short - you need to read this book to understand why the medical community perpetuates the belief that there was such an entity like ADHD without providing convincing scientific evidence. It gave me great relief that I have not been the only one refusing to do what we have been trained to do in current in pediatric residency programs - to label children with non-favored behaviour as ill. The disorder is within our communities - unfortunately not only in the US - other societies are catching up. Fortunately, there is a new review of the (lacking) scientific evidence in the December 2005 issue of the Journal of Child Neurology, which will hopefully spurn a wider discussion. But beyond questioning the existence of ADHD, the book helped me to value the gift of time - and sharing it especially with children.
If you have ADD, please read this book.......2006-01-25
If you have ADD, I strongly encourage you to read this book. Don't' just read this one, read as much as you can about ADD so you can make the best decision possible. As a man diagnosed with ADD, this has proven to be worth its weight in gold.
The books main premise is that ADD is not a true disorder, rather it stems from a culture that is plagued with the need for quickness. He makes a strong argument saying our culture produces the effects of ADD. He goes against what others in the ADD field claim. Other ADD pundits claim that people with ADD have brains that are not working correctly. Before Ritalin Nation, I read "ADD and Romance" which said ADD people must take medication. Completely opposite view points, but it is good to get both sides of an argument.
Since I have read Ritalin Nation I have not taken any medication. It has changed my views on the subject. What I find interesting, is when I asked my Doc. if there are any other solutions besides taking strong mind altering drugs, and she told me no. This is exactly the kind of the close mindedness Degrandpre speaks of.
