    Book Description

This book compares the Italian and Japanese economies in a number of areas, including corporate governance, growth, financial and foreign trade structures, labour markets, and industrial organization. The two economies have often been successful thanks to institutions, policies, and practices that differ importantly from those of the dominant Anglo-American model. Often the essays are the result of collaborative ventures between specialists coming from both countries.

            Book Description

Photosynthetic Adaptation: Chloroplast to Landscape thoroughly studies photosynthetic mechanisms at each structural level, from cells to leaves, crown, and canopy. The authors question whether photosynthetic adaptations take place primarily at the metabolic and biochemical level or through changes in structure and form, or both. In the interest of genetic engineering and agricultural applications, the authors analyze the relative importance of genes that control both metabolic and light reactions as well as the structure, arrangement, and orientation of photosynthesis.

                  Book Description

Over 130 years ago, James Clerk Maxwell introduced his hypothetical "demon" as a challenge to the scope of the second law of thermodynamics. Fascination with the demon persisted throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, information theory, and computer science, and links have been established between Maxwell's demon and each of these disciplines. The demon's seductive quality makes it appealing to physical scientists, engineers, computer scientists, biologists, psychologists, and historians and philosophers of science. Since the publication of Maxwell's Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing in 1990, Maxwell's demon has been the subject of renewed and increased interest by numerous researchers in the fields mentioned above. Updated and expanded, Maxwell's Demon 2: Entropy, Classical and Quantum Information, Computing retains many of the seminal papers that appeared in the first edition, including the original thoughts of James Clerk Maxwell and William Thomson; a historical review by Martin Klein; and key articles by Leo Szilard, Leon Brillouin, Rolf Landauer, and Charles Bennett that led to new branches of research on the demon. This second edition contains newer articles by Landauer, Bennett, and others, related to Landauer's principle; connections with quantum mechanics; algorithmic information; and the thermodynamics and limits of computation. The book also includes two separate bibliographies: an alphabetical listing by author and a chronological bibliography that is annotated by the editors and contains selected quotes from the books and articles listed. The bibliography has more than doubled in size since publication of the first edition and now contains over 570 entries.

4 out of 5 stars The Second Law.......2007-01-16

A collection of articles that explain the Second Law of Thermodynamics by looking at its most famous violator. It contains articles by William Thompson (who had not yet been made Lord Kelvin), Leo Szilard, Charles Bennett, Rolf Landauer and a cartoon by Larry Gonick (a fragment of which, a grinning little demon sitting on Maxwell's shoulder, is on the cover). The modern solution to the paradox posed by the demon is that the erasure of previously stored information in order to make room for the result of the observation increases the entropy of the demon by at least as much as the entropy of the vessel is decreased. Read Feynman Lectures on Computation for more context.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, complete, and well-organized.......2003-02-20

Maxwell's Demon 2 is one of the best books I've found in the field - the authors address key issues in a clear and engaging manner. This is an excellent and well-organized reference book and includes any number of original papers which are difficult to find through other sources. Highly recommended.

                      Book Description

In this important anthology, Judy Weiss has translated three twelfth century Anglo-Norman works: "Amis and Amilun," "Romance of Horn," and "Haveloc." Forerunners of the great medieval Romances, these lays entertained the families of barons who accompanied William the Conqueror to Britain, incorporating the legends of their adopted land. These texts, here translated into English for the first time, are essential reading for anyone interested in the poetic riches of the courtly tradition.

                      Book Description

Not long after Alaska was purchased by the United States from Russia in 1867, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service (USRCS) made its first appearance in the Bering Sea. Over the next forty-eight years the ships and men of the USRCS firmly established U.S. sovereignty in the area and performed amazing acts of rescue and humanitarian aid-contributions that have received little attention until the publication of this book.

Bringing together widely scattered documentation and records, maritime historians Dennis Noble and Truman Strobridge chronicle events in the service's colorful history. Filled with high drama as well as historical significance, the story includes a number of notable figures, among them Capt. Michael A. "Hell Roaring Mike" Healy, the black revenue cutter captain who became a legend of the Alaskan frontier and was memorialized in James Michener's novel Alaska. The cuttermen explored vast unknown areas in their multimission role, providing humanitarian relief after earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, bringing medical care to isolated areas, feeding starving North American natives, and rescuing shipwrecked sailors, whalers beset in the ice, lost explorers, and others in trouble in the hostile environment. Among the many projects described in the book is a noble social experiment carried out by these early U.S. Coast Guardsmen. They imported reindeer from Siberia and taught the Alaskan natives how to herd to assure a steady food supply and to avoid future famines. They also transported federal judges and their staffs to isolated settlements to bring a veneer of civilization to the rough frontier.

The authors describe and analyze these events in colorful narrative detail. Readers will quickly come to understand why the USRCS became so admired throughout the new territory and appreciate the effect the service had on the political, economic, and social life of the North Pacific region.

5 out of 5 stars History of Alaska territory and US Revenue Cutter Service.......1999-07-29

Heretofore, little has been written about United States' early years governing their new territory of Alaska nor of the governmental thread that kept this vast territory intact. Archives do hold much of this history and that is where the two authors of this book went for sources for this intriguing tale of a little known service executing an enormous responsibility.

The U.S. Revenue Cutter Service arrived in the Bearing Sea soon after the purchase of Alaska in 1867. For the next forty-eight years, until it became the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915, this small group of men, in mostly wooden ships, became the foundation for the government that established the sovereignty leading to the firmly established state it is today.

The cuttermen explored vast unknown areas in their multi-mission role. They provided humanitarian relief following natural disasters, brought medical care to isolated areas, fed starving North American natives, and rescued shipwrecked sailors, charted territories discovering isolated tribes in the wilderness and brought law to hostile surroundings. The small crews created a veneer of civilization in the rough frontier and the isolated settlements by their presence. Solutions to problems solved by a lonely unsupported sailor at the scene, a hundred years later became the laws of the new state so sensible were some of their actions.

From widely scattered documentation and records, maritime historians Truman Strobridge and Dennis Noble chronicle events in the service's colorful history. The story, filled with episodes high drama as well as events of historical significance, includes a number of notable figures. One is Capt. Michael A. "Hell Roaring Mike" Healy, the black revenue cutter captain who became a legend of the Alaskan frontier and was memorialized in James Michener's novel, Alaska.

The authors noted, "The early cuttermen have never received the credit due them for their efforts as seagoing policemen who served the indigenous people of an isolated region." Readers will quickly come to understand why the USRCS became so admired throughout the new territory and appreciate the effect the service had on the political, economic, and social life of this north Pacific region.

Each chapter can be made into full-length books from the materials developed by the authors' research. Most notable for biographies are two of the Service's officers: the above mentioned Healy and Lt. John C. Cantwell, who in addition to his shipboard duties, explored via river and land treks, a remote region of north-west Alaska.

This is a must read for students of Alaska history and it is a rare volume for maritime historians, as it covers one phase of the history of the mostly unrecorded U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.

The book is end noted, referencing rare and widely scattered original sources. The bibliography is extensive and the book is indexed. It is an excellent first choice for researchers and historians.

Truman R. Strobridge was an archivist and historian in the federal government for more than thirty years including being the Coast Guard's historian and a college teacher in Alaska. He is the author of nearly one hundred articles and two books.

Dennis L. Noble retired from the Coast Guard as a senior chief marine science technician where he made six Arctic voyages and two to the Antarctic. Following Coast Guard retirement he earned a Ph.D. in U.S. history is the author of nine books, seven on U.S. Coast Guard history.

                              Book Description

A number of monographs of various aspects of complex analysis in several variables have appeared since the first version of this book was published, but none of them uses the analytic techniques based on the solution of the Neumann Problem as the main tool.

The additions made in this third, revised edition place additional stress on results where these methods are particularly important. Thus, a section has been added presenting Ehrenpreis' ``fundamental principle'' in full. The local arguments in this section are closely related to the proof of the coherence of the sheaf of germs of functions vanishing on an analytic set. Also added is a discussion of the theorem of Siu on the Lelong numbers of plurisubharmonic functions. Since the L 2 techniques are essential in the proof and plurisubharmonic functions play such an important role in this book, it seems natural to discuss their main singularities.

5 out of 5 stars High-level math, as expected from Hormander.......2000-04-14

I started to learn several complex variables a few weeks ago, and I noticed the absolute lack of textbooks on the subject. Probably the book that comes more naturally as an extension of undergraduate complex analysis is Gunning and Rossi, but this title is out-of-print (even finding a used copy is nearly impossible. Believe me, I've tried hard).

So, we have Hormander's book. Lars Hormander is known for writing high-level math texts (both in quality and difficulty), as seen in his famous 4-volume series about PDE's, and this book is no exception. His point of view is more related to his area of research (PDE's, again), and his demands for prerequisites are higher than GR (basics from Lebesgue integration, differential forms, algebra and point-set topology are more than welcome), but this book is a masterpiece of mathematical craftsmanship. The methods here developed are often unique, and the author presents the subject in a fully rigorous way. Along with the fact that it is one of the very few books on several complex variables still in print, this is a very valuable text, set in a high standard of excellence. My only complaint is the obscenely high price for a book so important. Several complex variables are an indispensable background for complex manifolds and algebraic geometry, and several important topics in theoretical physics (string theory, twistor theory, conformal field theory), and it's a shame that books like GR go out-of-print without any others for substituting them. Hormander's book doesn't go much deep in these directions, but you won't find any other book in print on the subject with such a high quality.

                                  Book Description

This book gives a comprehensive introduction to complex analysis in several variables. It clearly focusses on special topics in complex analysis rather than trying to encompass as much material as possible. Many cross-references to other parts of mathematics, such as functional analysis or algebras, are pointed out in order to broaden the view and the understanding of the chosen topics. A major focus is extension phenomena alien to the one-dimensional theory, which are expressed in the famous Hartog's Kugelsatz, the theorem of Cartan-Thullen, and Bochner's theorem. The book primarily aims at students starting to work in the field of complex analysis in several variables and teachers who want to prepare a course. To that end, a lot of examples and supporting exercises are inserted throughout the text, which will help students to become acquainted with the subject.

                                    Book Description

Since the 1960s, there has been a flowering in higher-dimensional complex analysis. Both classical and new results in this area have found numerous applications in analysis, differential and algebraic geometry, and, in particular, contemporary mathematical physics. In many areas of modern mathematics, the mastery of the foundations of higher-dimensional complex analysis has become necessary for any specialist. Intended as a first study of higher-dimensional complex analysis, this book covers the theory of holomorphic functions of several complex variables, holomorphic mappings, and submanifolds of complex Euclidean space.

                                              Book Description

Motivating this interesting monograph is the development of a number of analogs of Hardy's theorem in settings arising from noncommutative harmonic analysis. This is the central theme of this work. Specifically, it is devoted to connections among various theories arising from abstract harmonic analysis, concrete hard analysis, Lie theory, special functions, and the very interesting interplay between the noncompact groups that underlie the geometric objects in question and the compact rotation groups that act as symmetries of these objects. A tutorial introduction is given to the necessary background material. The second chapter establishes several versions of Hardy's theorem for the Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group and characterizes the heat kernel for the sublaplacian. In Chapter Three, the Helgason Fourier transform on rank one symmetric spaces is treated. Most of the results presented here are valid in the general context of solvable extensions of H-type groups. The techniques used to prove the main results run the gamut of modern harmonic analysis such as representation theory, spherical functions, Hecke--Bochner formulas and special functions. Graduate students and researchers in harmonic analysis will greatly benefit from this book.
