            From the supplier: A five-year study was conducted on four locations in East Central Saskatchewan, Canada, to determine the impact of tillage systems on the productivity of oilseed and cereal crops. The study followed a crop-fallow and a continuous-cropping sequence under conventional, zero and minimum tillage systems. Results showed that continuous-cropping and conservation-tillage systems were feasible alternatives to conventional cropping practices.

                From the author: Atrazine losses in surface runoff from a silty clay loam under no-till (NT), chisel (CH), and disk (DK) tillage were measured using simulated rainfall. Atrazine (0.56 kg [ha.sup.-1]; 0.50 lb [acre.sup.-1]) and rainfall (6.4 cm [h.sup.-1]; 2.5 in [h.sup.-1], for 1.25 hr) were applied to small plots and atrazine in sediment and dissolved in water was determined for all runoff samples. Total atrazine losses were CH (58.6 g [ha.sup.-1]) [greater than] NT (44.1 g [ha.sup.-1] = DK (41.9 g [ha.sup.-1]). However, sediment losses were CH (2.84 MT [ha.sup.-1]) [greater than] DK (2.09 MT [ha.sup.-1]) [congruent] NT (0.37 MT [ha.sup.-1]). Dissolved atrazine in runoff water accounted for more than 99.8% of total atrazine loss, and atrazine lost through sediment transport was insignificant. Although atrazine partitioning between solution and solid phases in soil is often directly related to soil organic matter content, atrazine adsorption by soil organic matter did not control the amount of atrazine lost in runoff. Poor relationships between apparent Kd values and soil organic matter content across simulated rainfall studies suggest experimental conditions affect runoff losses of atrazine more than atrazine adsorption by soil organic matter. No-till systems reduce water and herbicide runoff under natural rainfall conditions, but results under simulated rainfall conditions are mixed. Presaturation of plots with water, high-intensity simulated rainfalls shortly after atrazine application, and other experimental conditions may outweigh tillage effects and mask differences in atrazine losses from land under different tillage systems. Future best management practices (BMPs) used to reduce herbicide runoff from agricultural land will be developed from simulated rainfall studies. Identification of successful BMPs that minimize herbicide runoff under environmental conditions requires careful selection of experimental conditions used in simulated rainfall studies.

                  From the supplier: The effects various tillage and planting system treatments on the crop residue content of soil surface were evaluated. Sixty-nine tillage and planting systems treatments were used in the investigation, including field cultivation, till-plant, no-till plant, chisel plow and blade plow. These treatments were implemented in an experiment site using conventional agricultural equipment, such as the fertilizer applicator and stalk chopper. Results show that only the no-till approach was able to provide residue cover levels equal to or greater than 40% after planting.

                    From the author: Crop-fallow using conventional mechanical tillage has been the traditional management practice for farmers in the semi-arid northern Great Plains. This practice reduces soil quality and is not sustainable. More intensive management systems utilizing reduced- or notillage, fertilization to meet a yield goal, and systems producing a crop annually are being developed. In 1984, a study was initiated to compare crop yield, water-use efficiency, and nutrient-use efficiency under a spring wheat-fallow system to that under a spring wheat-winter wheat-sunflower annual cropping system. In 1995, soil samples were collected and laboratory analyses performed to quantify a number of soil quality attributes and determine the effect these management practices have had on soil quality after 11 years. Soil quality attributes were greater under annual cropping than under crop-fallow and improved as tillage intensity decreased. These results suggest that the more intensive management strategies are more sustainable.

                      From the supplier: The effectiveness of several corn and soybean tillage systems in minimizing rain-triggered phosphorus runoff in cropland was evaluated. Rainfall simulation experiments were carried out on a Catlin silt loam soil at a slope of 1.5-4.0% and a Tama silt loan soil at a slope of 6.0-13%. The tillage systems studied include ridge-till, strip-till, chisel, no-till and fall moldboard. Results show that the average concentration of dissolved phosphorus runoff was greater for the no-till than all tillage practices.

                        From the author: Our objective was to analyze economics of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cropping and tillage practices after 10 years of evaluation. We initiated the study in 1983 on a Dooley sandy loam (fine-loamy, mixed Typic Argiboroll) 11 km (7 mi) north of Culbertson, Montana. Annually cropped tillage treatments included sweep tillage in fall with spring disking, sweep tillage in spring, and no-till. A conventional follow-crop rotation was included. Spring wheat yields ranged from 74 kg/ha (1.1 bu/acre) to 3,465 kg/ha (51.5 bu/acre). Net return was highest for no-till annually cropped wheat at $19.04/ha ($7.71/acre) and lowest for barley-spring wheat rotation at -$23.74/ha (-$9.61/acre). Under conditions of this 10-year study, in a 356 mm (14 in.) precipitation zone, we conclude that annually cropped no-till wheat production was the most profitable cropping practice.

                            From the supplier: The effects of tillage on infiltration in Wedowee sandy clay loam were determined. Three types of tillage treatment were examined and field traffic was restricted to alternate interrows. Infiltration rates in the non-trafficked interrows were found to be significantly higher than those in trafficked interrows. Moreover, infiltration measured one to two weeks after tillage revealed more clearly the soil water differences in the three tillage treatments which most likely explains the observed differences in corn grain yield. Thus, soil physical properties significantly affect crop production.

                              Book Description

                              Recent concerns over the possible hazards of electrical and magnetic fields in the home and workplace are comprehensively addressed within this book. The chapters contain detailed research on the biological effects of electric and magnetic fields, and evidence for and against any interaction of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and the biological systems.

                              The two volumes cover:
                              * The relative risk of exposure to EMFs
                              * Putative behavioral and neural effects of EMFs
                              * EMF effects on cells

                                        Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering, Third Edition is a highly acclaimed undergraduate textbook that teaches all the mathematics for an undergraduate course in any of the physical sciences. As well as lucid descriptions of all the topics and many worked examples, it contains over 800 exercises. New stand-alone chapters give a systematic account of the 'special functions' of physical science, cover an extended range of practical applications of complex variables, and give an introduction to quantum operators. This solutions manual accompanies the third edition of Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering. It contains complete worked solutions to over 400 exercises in the main textbook, the odd-numbered exercises, that are provided with hints and answers. The even-numbered exercises have no hints, answers or worked solutions and are intended for unaided homework problems; full solutions are available to instructors on a password-protected web site, www.cambridge.org/9780521679718.

                                          Book Description

                                          Esta es la primera obra donde aparece el legendario burlador de la fe y de las mujeres, Don Juan, que conjuntamente con el Quijote son los héroes de la literatura clásica española más universales y populares. El don Juan de Tirso que seduce a doña Isabela haciéndose pasar por su marido, inspiró posteriormente a otros autores como Moliere, Verdi o Zorrilla. Sin embargo, este don Juan original, padre de todos los demás, es curiosamente el menos conocido.

                                            On purpose of commemorating the fourth centenary of the birth of the Spanish dramatist Tirso de Molina, the Department of Modern Language and Literature of The Catholic University of America, sponsored a so-called The International Symposium on Tirso de Molina, which was organized by Dr. Joseph M. Sola-Solé, assistant professor, and took place in Washington D.C. in November 1988. One of the academic byproducts of that event is the volume Tirso's Dons Juan, Metamorphoses of a Theme, edited bu Joseph M. Sola-Solé and George E. Gingras, associate professor, and published in Washington D.C. The Catholic University of America, 1988. It assembles numerous scholary contributions then presented by well-known specialists in Hispanic Literature, although dealing with a single and specific the: Don Juan, the character and theatrical personage. As such, this book remains referred to as rare collection of high quality level studies on the subject.
                                            I'ts hard task to distinguish any of the thirteen articles selected for this publication, because each one or them is worth enough to be summed up as unique in the meaningful conjoint of texts. A relevant theme as Tirso de Molina and his provocative personage, Don Juan, justify the value of this book as a whole. DThe erudition of the authors of the articles assembled by the book constitutes, as ma matter of fact, the most efficient factor for its success in the realm of literature, along with the appropriate viewpoints and approache adopted by the authors for analyzing and understanding the Spanish dramaturgical creation of Don Juan, undoubtedly one of the most famous characters os hero-villain of the world literature. In this book the article "The present state of Studies on the Don Juan", written by Armand Singer, of West Virginia University, deserves a special mention for having presented the most complete bibliography ever inlisted on the theme, and amplified after his research-book "The Don Juan Theme, Versions and Criticism: a Bibliography" (Morgantown, West Virginia Univesity Press, 1965) and is subsequent "Supplements", all of them published in the WVUPP, in 1966, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980 and 198. The article "Some Observations on the Generic Status of the Don Juan Theme from Tirso de Molina to Mozart", signed by George E.Gingras, an associate professor of the Department of Modern Language and Literature of the Catholic University of America, by examining the problem of generic displacement performed by the theme in a variety of neoclassical dramatic and musical forms, also deserves another distinguishid mention.
