Law Made Easy.......2003-09-16
Like any portable or abridged version, this book gives all the information necessary to know where to continue looking or what options are not available. A great book for quick field reference.
OCD Law Students only.......2001-11-06
The Uniform Commercial Code is a model code designed to allow the individual states to adopt those "ghost written" portions of contract law their legislatures are too lazy or bored to bother with.
Yes, I make a living applying the UCC as it has been incorporated in Chapter 400 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, but this book is --at best--little more than a slim overview of a vast area: it is not suited to any meaningful use in a legal practice.

Book Description
Even to a botanist, the rain forests of the tropics consist of a bewildering variety of plants and plant forms, most of them woody and tall and therefore bearing their flowers and fruits discretely out of sight in the dense, high canopy. Animal and bird life is arboreal, heard but not often
seen, while the insects, fungi and bacteria at work are specialized studies in themselves. In this eminently readable book, the author brings together an interesting collection of vignettes on plant and animal life in the rain forests of Malaysia and Indonesia -- the richest in numbers of species in
the world. Each plant chosen exemplifies some aspect of the wonderful web of rain forest life. Evolving and proliferating through millions of years, the complex interrelationships of a rain forest can be admired -- or destroyed -- by human beings, but never replaced. The author cogently illustrates
the basic principles of rain forest ecology, which in its intricate complexity makes of any rain forest a wonder of the natural world, and uses examples throughout to develop a passionate plea for conservation. The book is elegantly illustrated with color plates drawn by Mohamed Anwar of the Bogor
Herbarium and line drawings by the author herself.

Book Description
This introduction to tropical food science addresses the needs of two groups of people. First, there are those living in the tropics who require a simple introductory text. Food science is perhaps the most important science affecting their lives. The second group consists of students, administrators, and workers in industry and research in temperate zones, who are concerned with food problems but who have no firsthand knowledge of the tropics. The text provides a concise and accessible guide to all the major elements of the subject, including the nutritional value of tropical foodstuffs, its digestion, and the preparation and preservation of food. The author has taken care to avoid the use of jargon and the text is supplemented by many useful and explanatory illustrations.

Book Description
Stem Cells and CNS Development critically reviews recent findings on stem cells, their involvement in neurogenesis and gliogenesis, and the therapeutic implications of these findings. It defines by consensus the classes of stem cells in the nervous system, compares their similarities and differences, discusses the gains made in identifying human homologs of neural stem cells, and describes how these cells are beginning to be used
for therapeutic purposes. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, this book provides all developmental scientists and neurobiologists not only an authoritative account of the current results in neural stem cell research, but also an incisive review of the rapidly emerging therapeutic uses of stem cells.

Heavy-hitters represented.......2002-09-07
Having just started working in the area of neural stem cell research at the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence RI, I turned to Dr. Rao's book as a primer on the field. I was delighted to discover that in addition to having excellent content, the book was consistently well-written. As I started to read the journal literature, I discovered that many of the chapter contributors are heavy-hitters in the field. People like Fred Gage of the Salk Institute and Arturo Alvarez-Buylla of Rockefeller University are contributors. Of course, Dr. Rao himself is a major name in the field and contributes to several chapters. I could not give it a full five-star rating because there are a few weak links, such as the penultimate chapter on transplant therapy, which provides little insight. But I wish I were allowed to give it four-and-a-half stars because, overall, this is a great book. After I got mine, two more people in our lab bought copies. I recommend that anyone in the field do the same!
Excellent.......2001-08-18
Dr. Rao has done the neuroscience community a great service in producing this work. Very useful, very well written.

Must-have book for Physics instructors .......2006-04-11
Lots of classic demos plus some unusual ones. Each chapter includes explicit instructions, background material, safety warnings, and references. A terrific resource for science teachers (specifically in physics) at all levels, though most useful at the high school or college level.
Book Description
At the turn of the 20th century, Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) emerged as an author to be reckoned with in the world of detective fiction, introducing the highly memorable scientific detective Dr. Thorndyke, an early forensic sleuth. Armed with his little green case full of scientific detection aids, Thorndyke unravelled murders and mysteries using logic and material evidence.
This volume collects seven of Thorndyke's most puzzling stories, including "The Man with the Nailed Shoes," "The Moabite Cipher," "A Message from the Deep Sea," and many more.
Freeman's important novels include: The Mystery of 31 New Inn (1911), The Eye of Osiris (1911), and A Silent Witness (1914), artistically written and memorably characterized. Later major works include The Red Thumb Mark, When Rogues Fall Out, and The Jacob Street Mystery.

A contemporary of Sherlock Holmes: better........1998-01-22
This is from memory of reading it about 50 years ago. Austin Freeman created a better detective than Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. His "Dr. Thorndyke" is Holmes with TV's Quincy added: a more logical detective who explains things better to the reader. Indeed, some of the stories are "inverted", i.e. you know who did it and how, but you follow the good doctor as he unravels the case. I wanna new copy of his cases!

Book Description
Here, in one complete volume, is the depth and breadth of the great island nation and its people represented in an easily browsed, friendly format. From the Abbey Theatre to the Dublin storyteller Zozimus; from the origin of the Troubles to the origin of the limerick; from the stunning beauty of Connemara to the shattering tragedy of Bloody Sunday; from the greatest writers of the English language to the “confrontational television” of Gay Byrne’s The Late Late Show–every aspect of Irish culture, geography, and history is collected and annotated in more than 900 entries from A to Z. Readers will encounter heroes and terrorists, poets and politicians, all of Ireland’s counties, ancient myths, and pivotal events–all expertly and succinctly described and explained.
With entries written by some of the world’s leading authorities on Ireland, Everything Irish is perfect for everyone, from the inquiring reader to the serious student. You can spend a few minutes learning about the much-maligned Travelers and then move on to the equally contentious (in its time) medieval tithe. Visit the majestic Cliffs of Moher and then delve into an analysis of paramilitary groups like the Irish Republican Army and the Ulster Volunteer Force. Explore the ruins of a Romanesque castle or experience the piercing light of the winter solstice inside prehistoric Newgrange, a passage grave older than the pyramids.
Across centuries and across counties, the rich landscape of Irish life and heritage springs to life in these pages. An indispensable source of fascinating information and captivating anecdote, this is one book that will never be far from the hands of those with curious minds or an adventurous spirit.

Good for the casual reader, but lacking any real depth........2004-08-07
I picked up a copy of "Everything Irish" from a local discount book store for $6.99 (USD), and that price seems about accurate for a book this disappointing. Although intended to be a basic encyclopedia of Ireland, "Everything Irish" continually leaves you wanting so much more that it seems almost too simple even for the most carefree reading.
The entry on the Troubles, which is listed as the "Northern Ireland conflict", is one of the longer entries with approximately 1 1/2 pages (not front and back) of information. However, it's such a brief overview that even a casual follower of Irish politics over the past few decades will wonder why the Troubles occurred in the first place, as well as how the events affected Northern Ireland and its people. In what becomes a recurring trend throughout "Everything Irish", these are questions that the reader will be asking but which are never fully answered by the book.
As far as the Irish saints are concerned, Brigid, Colm Cille (Columba), and Brendan are hardly covered, and with the entry on Brendan being particularly noteworthy (in a negative sense) for having just one paragraph of brief information. The article on Patrick propagates the myth that he drove "the snakes" out of Ireland, without clarifying that virtually all historians believe the "snakes" stood for pagans and pagan beliefs.
This glaring error could be chalked up to the fact that the writers, Lelia Ruckenstein and James A. O'Malley, don't seem to be historians at all, with the jacket saying that Ruckenstein is a book reviewer and O'Malley's a lawyer who sits on the board of a theatre company. These hardly seem to be qualifications for writing a non-fiction reference work, though they do explain how such a mistake could end up in a book on Irish history. Seeing as the writers could have read just about any other book on Irish history to learn how wrong their statement is, it's amazing that it somehow worked its way in.
For a supposed reference work, it also contains much opinion, including a line asserting that the mission of Palladius (who is given a paragraph even shorter than Brendan's) "has been largely overshadowed by, and subsumed into, that of Patrick, though is his groundbreaking work made him equally deserving of the title saint". While that may be true, it is in no way appropriate for a reference work, and also is not backed up in any way considering the complete lack of information on the man.
Rather than using the usual "See also..." method for cross-referencing, entries are tied together using asterisks before words within the articles. For example, the article on the Dubliners has a line saying that they became a band at "O'Donoghue's music bar in *Dublin". This asterisk does not mean that the article on Dublin contains any information on the Dubliners; rather, it simply shows that an article on Dublin exists. While this method certainly saves space on the pages, it can become particularly annoying the more you read, especially since you never know whether you're actually supposed to turn to the referenced article or not.
Additionally, no references are ever given, nor is there a bibliography. The only sources of any sort listed are for the images, of which there are few. Readers will find themselves sorely missing them, since the entries are so short that they'll want to go somewhere else for information.
"Everything Irish" does have some positive points. Not all entries are completely lacking, with the ones on subjects like James Joyce, the Irish Free State, and partion having some fair length to them. It typically uses traditional Irish spellings, though readers unfamiliar with the language will be sorry to see there are no pronunciation guides. While the book obviously has a pro-Irish stance, it generally stays neutral on political issues. There's also a very nice timeline at the end of the book that covers events from 7000 B.C. to 2002 A.D., though you can't help but notice how few of the events mentioned are discussed in the book.
In short, "Everything Irish" is a fair book for the casual reader looking for a no-frills starting point, but even the most uninformed regarding Ireland and its history will be left wondering if they've actually learned much of anything. It's certainly not the type of book you'd want to look up information in if you're writing a paper or book yourself. If you're looking for nothing more than the most basic information available, however, this book is perfect for you, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2.
Excellent Resource!.......2004-05-31
I was doing research on Ireland for my current novel and ran across this book. It contains all the information I needed and a whole lot more. This book is a great resource for anyone searching for information about Ireland or the important people from this country.

Book Description
This beautifully written book weaves reflections on anthropological fieldwork together with evocative meditations on a spectacular landscape as it takes us to the remote indigenous villages on the shore of Lake Titicaca, high in the Peruvian Andes. Ben Orlove brings alive the fishermen, reed cutters, boat builders, and families of this isolated region, and describes the role that Lake Titicaca has played in their culture. He describes the landscapes and rhythms of life in the Andean highlands as he considers the intrusions of modern technology and economic demands in the region. Lines in the Water tells a local version of events that are taking place around the world, but with an unusual outcome: people here have found ways to maintain their cultural autonomy and to protect their fragile mountain environment.
The Peruvian highlanders have confronted the pressures of modern culture with remarkable vitality. They use improved boats and gear and sell fish to new markets but have fiercely opposed efforts to strip them of their indigenous traditions. They have retained their customary practice of limiting the amount of fishing and have continued to pass cultural knowledge from one generation to the next--practices that have prevented the ecological crises that have followed commercialization of small-scale fisheries around the world. This book--at once a memoir and an ethnography--is a personal and compelling account of a research experience as well as an elegantly written treatise on themes of global importance. Above all, Orlove reminds us that human relations with the environment, though constantly changing, can be sustainable.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-04-13
(Planeta.com Journal) -- Lines in the Water (University of California Press, 2002), a beautifully written ethnography of rural fishermen and their families. The book's subtitle "Nature and Culture at Lake Titicaca" specifies the center of action, but the scope is much broader and deeper. It's actually hard to find the words to say how delightful this book is. Author Ben Orlove is an environmental science professor at the University of California, Davis, and his book is based on three decades of trips to Peru and Bolivia. The book is a showcase of fresh writing and a major contribution to the literature about South America. Orlove provides a frank account of the role academics themselves play. He includes himself in this story and shares candid observations -- from his reactions to office politics to daydreaming about museums. This book is highly recommended. Eco travelers visiting Lake Titicaca would do well to read this book in advance.
A gem of a cross-disciplinary book.......2003-02-24
This is a gem, written with great respect for the indigenous people who live aound Lake Titicaca, well-annotated and with wonderful photographs by the author. Orlove has broad interests - anthropology, economics, natural history, environmental issues, to name a few, and a talent for accessing interesting memories. He conveys his astute observations in clear and vivid prose. The book is organized nicely - I especially liked the material in the final chapter, entitled "Paths", which offers an antidote to the sad fact that roads and highways are so often destructive to local people and to biodiversity. Paths, literal or metaphorical, also provide valuable linkages and essential connections among the various components of this remote but very interesting and community with ancient roots. Orlove provides the reader with a sense of having traveled those paths for a short while with him.

Biologists have a dirty little secret: while practically everyone knows of The Origin of Species (and owes much to it), almost nobody has read it. British geneticist Steve Jones wants to make the arguments contained in that great text accessible to modern audiences, and succeeds with the delightful Darwin's Ghost. Approximating the structure of Darwin's opus, Jones uses the original chapter headings and summaries as a scaffolding to build an up-to-date demonstration of the power of a few simple ideas. Heredity, variation, and natural selection are all you need to infer evolution over time, and now that Jones can fill in the gaps in Darwin's pre-Mendelian understanding of genetics, the case becomes airtight.
More than a polemic, though, Darwin's Ghost is nearly as pleasurable a read as its ancestor is--one suspects that part of Jones's mission is to inspire today's readers to turn back to the grand but humble Origin of Species. While he may not be able to quite match Darwin's vast erudition or hawk's eye for detail, he still makes the theory of evolution shudder and breathe on the page. Dog breeding, mass extinctions, and weird fossils of tiny elephants all march to his drumbeat and--just when you least expect it--return to the main point that all living things share a common ancestor. Whether you're one of the elite who's had the pleasure of Darwin's literary company or you'd like a taste of what you're missing, Darwin's Ghost will bring the spirit of the great man back into your world of ideas. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species is probably the best-known, least-read book. One of the most important achievements of the past millennium, it did for biology what Galileo did for astronomy: made it into a single science rather than a collection of unrelated facts. Important though Origin remains, its examples and intricate Victorian prose are now a century and a half old. They are ripe for renewal and reaffirmation. Writing as "Darwin's ghost," eminent geneticist Steve Jones updates this seminal work—and restates evolution's case for the 21st century.
Jones is a writer of engaging wit and dazzling erudition and has been called "the British Carl Sagan." Using modern examples—the AIDS virus, the puzzles of sexual selection, the physiology and psychology of pets, and the unparalleled genetic success of our own species—he shows the power and immediacy of Darwin's great argument and makes us appreciate how it makes life make sense. Eye-opening and entertaining, filled with astonishing facts, amusing anecdotes, and the very latest research, Darwin's Ghost is contemporary science writing at its very best.
Customer Reviews:
Not a good read........2006-03-28
I tend to agree with criticism presented in previous reviews.
I found "Darwin's Ghost" (my first attempt to learn more about Darwin and recent progress on his evolution theory) rather difficult to read. Certain fragments are very interesting and even shocking to the layman (just for example: Earth's history, details about bacterias, ants, bees and behavior of cuckoos and other birds/animals). And OK, I understand: there is no charity in Nature, everything comes down to DNA, its mobility, exchange, transmittance, etc.(meaning DNA science is a key in today's research on evolution). However I had to struggle quite often over many sections of this text. Swamped by chaos of too many examples, "Darwin's Ghost's" huge disadvantage is a lack of 'Glossary of Scientific Terms' - a MUST for any popular science book! I suspect that Richard Dawkins would be better pick, though on the other hand beware: he is focused too much on preaching atheism.
Dissapointing! Darwin's ghost must be feeling very uneasy..........2005-05-27
I expected to find an easy and enjoyable introduction to Darwin's original. I ended up reading only the extracts from Darwin's original. How much more rationally structured and carefully exposed were Darwin's ideas and how sad the contrast with Jones' clumsy arguments and unstructured accumulation of examples. I needed no convinving about evolution against creationism. I was looking though for an adequate exposition of the alternative theories of evolution. Jones takes adaptionist/genetically-determined evolution as the "truth" and he discards alternative views in a few sentences (in his view "punctuated equilibrium" theories have been rejected....I wonder what Gould would have to say about it...). And while rejecting both in the intro and the conclusions that biological evolution can be extrapolated into human affairs, the book is full of unfounded anthropomorphic examples (e.g. cities "struggling for survival", some surviving and others vanishing!). No doubt that the acknowledgement of Lewontin, a radical Harvard biologist, at the first page of the book was the one that fooled me. The book is a tribute to Dawkins' and Spencerian ideas of evolution, not the complex evolution that Lewontin, Gould, Eldrege and others write about.
The book is the perfect example of what popular science writing SHOULD NOT BE. In order to make science accessible to the public, contestable theories are presented as undoubted "truths" and long and complex scientific debates muted.
Dr Giorgos Kallis, University of California at Berkeley
a brilliant concept, brilliantly executed.......2005-04-15
This is a great book, an update of Darwin's THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES, taking the structure of the revolutionary 1859 book and writing new chapters with the latest research findings, of course including modern genetics, which Darwin knew nothing about. The author, Steve Jones, is a genetics professor at University College London, so he is well qualified for this project. Every chapter is packed with fascinating examples of the mechanisms of "descent with modification through natural selection." While Jones makes clear where gaps have been filled in Darwin's theorizing, modern biology has mainly vindicated Darwin in every chapter, and has built on his amazing insights.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jones's style, which is infused with mordant wit. Over the years I have tried to read Darwin's great work more than once, and my eyes have glazed over. It is considered great literature by some, and I know it contains some beautiful phrases, but I found Jones to be far more entertaining. With DARWIN'S GHOST he joins Gould and Dawkins as one of the leading popularizers of biology of our times. This book claims a place on a very short list of essential books for any non-biologist who wants to gain a basic understanding of evolutionary biology in the early 21st century.
[NEWSFLASH -- the school board in Kansas is trying to downgrade evolution again -- it may be the Earth is flat, the sun revolves around the Earth, the Earth is only 6000 years old, and there is no such thing as evolution. It may also be the case that pigs can fly.]
No respect!.......2004-06-02
It is interesting to notice that while Charles Darwin remains the main reference in evolutionary theory, it is becoming more and more difficult to show respect for the ideas of a man that, besides being mentally sick, didn't really know what he was talking about. Since Darwin thought that the cell was just a little bit of indiferenciated protoplasm, it was fairly easy for him to come up with some just so stories about its hipothetical evolution out of nothing. Random mutations and natural selection have proved to be incapable of explaining evolution. Today, what we know about DNA and molecular machines is enough for us to conclude that there is no such thing as simple life and that we can hardly imagine how the complex specified information in the cell could be generated without the work of God, the Super Inteligent Designer. Besides, all the mutations that are generally presented as evidence of evolution has proved to be totally incapable to generate new DNA information. What is remarkable is how easily the intelectual community accepted Darwin's just so stories. But then again, if one thinks about how easily many intelectuals accepted Karl Marx's "scientific socialism" one just has to conclude that most intellectuals will readily accept all kinds of nonsense, as long as it keeps God out of the equation. They call this science, but for me it is just a (not that clever) form of self deceit.
An absolute Must read book!.......2004-03-06
A MUST READ for any lover of Darwin's works or evolution in general. If you are a believer in creationism, you may not like it, but then again, you would not like any book other than the bible anyway.
