          Book Description

Macrophytes and macrophytes ecology have gained an added importance with the introduction of, and legal requirement to implement, the European Water Framework Directive. This reflects the valuable role that aquatic plant communities play in assessing the ecological status of water bodies. Significant changes in the status and general abundance of these communities has been recorded in the last three decades, consequent on such factors as global warming and, increasingly, on the spread of aggressive alien species. These changes have been most felt in those waters that are exploited for amenity and recreational pursuits.

The increased biomass of aquatic vegetation in water bodies has adversely impacted on leisure use of these systems but has also impacted on their use for agricultural, flood relief, municipal and domestic purposes. The loss to national economies resulting from this excessive plant biomass has been appreciable and has put pressure on water managers to develop weed control procedures that are efficient, environmentally sensitive and cost-effective. The results from the most up-to-date research activities and field trials of leading aquatic plant scientists and managers in all five continents, aimed at resolving these weed problems, has been drawn together in this volume.

The title of this special issue, 'Macrophytes in aquatic ecosystems: from biology to management', is wide-ranging and reflects the broad scope and scale of the papers presented therein. It further recognises the old paradigm: 'knowledge to achieve management and management to achieve knowledge'.

            Book Description

There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years.
Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

              Book Description

Weeds hold an enigmatic and sometimes controversial place in agriculture, where they are generally reviled, grudgingly tolerated, and occasionally admired. Weeds affect crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. This makes them an important object of scientific study. This book offers a global perspective on weed science by presenting contributions from an outstanding group of researchers in 12 countries, reviewed by over 50 experts. It discusses technologies, which could relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimise profits and preserve human health and the environment. These technologies represent the science of weed management. The aim of the book is to provide insight and recent progress in the science of weed research. Articles presenting the novel and critical appraisals of specific topics are included. The topics of ecology (i), management of invasive plants (ii), evolutionary biology of foxtail species (iii), the benefits of weeds (iv), ecological and physiological aspects of weed/crop competition and chemical control (v), aquatic weed management and characteristics of weed management systems using information obtained in recent research (vi) are discussed. The volume concludes with in depth discussion on weed management with specific examples. Thus, in totality, the book covers the physiology, ecology and management of weeds and summarizes much of the current state of weed research. The comprehensive coverage of the subject, make this a valuable reference book for both students and researchers. Readers will gain a unique perspective on weed ecology, physiology and management.

                            Book Description

This book, Volume 23 in the Tetrahedron Organic Chemistry series, presents organolithium chemistry from the perspective of a synthetic organic chemist, drawing from the synthetic literature to present a unified overview of how organolithiums can be used to make molecules. The development of methods for the regioselective synthesis of organolithiums has replaced their image of indiscriminate high reactivity with one of controllable and subtle selectivity. Organolithium chemistry has a central role in the selective construction of C-C bonds in both simple and complex molecules, and for example has arguably overtaken aromatic electrophilic substitution as the most powerful method for regioselective functionalisation of aromatic rings. The twin themes of reactivity and selectivity run through the book, which reviews the ways by which organolithiums may be formed and the ways in which they react. Topics include recent advances in directed metallatio

                              Book Description

Lewis acids provide inexpensive access to elaborated molecules obtained with high selectivities (regio-, stereo-, and enantioselectivity). Lewis Acids and Selectivity in Organic Synthesis is the first book to deal with these new and promising roles of Lewis acids. The book begins with general considerations on Lewis acids and a description of Lewis acid-carbonyl complexes, which are involved in most of the reactions described: ene reactions, allylsilane and allyltin addition to carbonyl compounds, addition of nucleophiles to acetals, conjugated addition of allylsilanes and allyltins to unsaturated carbonyl compounds (Sakurai reaction), and Diels-Alder reaction. Subsequent chapters examine these issue in detail, with special attention given to the way Lewis acids induce diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The extensive use of schemes (approximately 1000) ensures rapid visual uptake of the information. Lewis Acids and Selectivity in Organic Synthesis serves as a valuable source of information for all who face the challenge of selectivity in organic synthesis.

                                  Book Description

Selectivity is an increasingly important part of organic synthesis. The whole basis of organic chemistry, and especially organic synthesis, depends upon the selectivity which can be achieved in organic reactions. This concise textbook describes the strategies which can be adopted to improve selectivity, and the reactions which have been specially designed to afford high selectivity. The aim is to illustrate the range of processes to which these principles can be applied and the high degree of selectivity which can be achieved. Selectivity in Organic Synthesis aims to provide a solid introduction to this subject, focusing on the key areas and applications.

5 out of 5 stars Asymmetric Synthesis Made Simple.......2000-08-17

Suitable for organic chemistry students taking a course on synthetic organic chemistry or asymmetric synthesis in upper division of graduate level, "Selectivity in Organic Synthesis" fills the gap between fundamental concepts and reactions of undergraduate organic chemistry text and the much-complicated journal articles that requires in-depth understanding of the chemistry. This book focuses on stereoselectivity of carbonyl compounds and alkene reactions - with clear explanations on kinetic resolution, symmetry and formation of chair-like transition states leading to the stereospecific products. The text, overall, is intended to be concise, readable and interesting.

                                      Book Description

This book provides an introduction to nonequilibrium statistical mechanics applied to ideas in chaotic dynamics. The author illustrates how techniques in statistical mechanics can be used to calculate quantities that are essential to understanding the chaotic behavior of fluid systems. Beginning with important background information, the volume goes on to introduce basic concepts of dynamical systems theory through simple examples before explaining advanced topics such as SRB and Gibbs measures. It will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics, nonlinear science, theoretical physics, mathematics, and theoretical chemistry.

John Stuart Mill sets the stage for all liberal political thought. He discusses such topics as the role of society over the individual, the role of the individual over society, the death penalty, the importance of the individual, the ideal voter, the ideal citizen, the role of women in society, and the importance of personal liberty. Alan Ryan superbly organizes this edition by also including some constructive criticisms of Mill's thought in the last partition. This book is an excellent edition for any student of political philosophy.
