Book Description
Understanding Tolowa Histories develops a multi-leveled historical inquiry of the Native Tolowa of Northwestern California. The Tolowa were displaced and nearly destroyed in the nineteenth century. Since then, they have struggled to reclaim their collective identity and language and are now re-emerging as a cultural and political group.
Presenting a wide-ranging analysis of ethnographic, linguistic and historical materials, James Collins explores the linguistic and political dynamics of place-claiming and expropriation as well as the relation between otherness and subjugation. He shows the role of such discourse in the ongoing controversies about tradition and identity in Native and non-Native America and establishes the place of the Tolowa and Native California in the larger pattern of US/Indian history.
Customer Reviews:
I now understand.......2001-02-01
My wife is of Tolowa descent and I have found this book to be a fascinating read. Over the years, I have been quite puzzled, and intrigued, by what I interpreted to be the quirky behaviors, of my wife and family, such as: refusing to talk about the past; only using the native tongue to scold children and family pets; embarrassment on being identified as an Indian; an easy acceptance of the appearance of poverty even when they have good incomes; in-laws jokingly offering to bring old cars and other junk to the house so that we would look more Indian; a fascination verging upon obsession for poaching fish, game, and firewood; and, a general reluctance to do anything in a legal manner when other options are available.
This book has helped me tremendously in understanding my Tolowa kin and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to learn about the present-day Tolowa people. As a benefit, the book briefly covers traditional culture and language -- for which a previous reviewer regrettably found great fault for its lack of detail. However, one only has to reread the title to see that the focus of this work is not traditional culture and language, but rather, how real people, whose assimilation into the American culture only appears to be complete, cope with living in two cultures.
Where else in America do the young men quietly slip out of a warm house full of family, food, and friends to illegally fish for salmon they could easily afford to buy because the fish and game wardens are, as they say, "never out on Thanksgiving"? So, to Mr. Collins I say: "Well done."
I was pleased........1999-08-10
Contrary to the previous reader, I found this book both interesting and accessible. It presents a small Native California group, the Tolowa, in an historical narrative that explains who they were before Americans settled California (and Oregon), how they were changed by conquest, and how they have survived. It does not write in arcane detail about the traditional culture, but it does provide considerable amounts of information organized into an intelligent argument. Unlike many traditional anthropological studies, it doesn't stint the periods after the Northwest was settled by Americans, that is, contemporary history. Although it is not a linguistic book, it presents a clearly-written and detailed argument about language, place, and identity, and the final chapter has a long discussion of how Tolowa efforts to preserve their native language have been part of cultural persistence. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Tolowa, in an accessible history of Native Californians and Native Americans as part of the broader currents of U.S. History, or in a sensitive discussion of the politics of identity and why it matters. But be sure to buy the paperback, the hardback is way overpriced.

I was disappointed........1998-09-16
I am an avid reader and collector of ethnological and cultural writings of the Pacific NW as well as being a native of the region. This book lacks the scholarship and detail necessary for a definitive work about the Tolowa people. It is too ambitious. It also follows the pattern of prescribed Anthropology in ignoring the fact that U.S. State boundaries are artificial in terms of culture. Oregon native cultures are as closely related to the Tolowa as California native cultures. In the linguistics section there is not enough information. This book is simply too thin to really say anything important. I also think the editing and writing could have used a few more drafts. For anyone doing research on the Tolowa, I can not recommend this book.

Book Description
Local Government Tax and Land Use Policies in the United States is an accessible, non-technical evaluation of the most recent economic thinking on the nexus between local land use and tax policies. In Part I, Helen Ladd provides a comprehensive summary of the extensive literature on the interaction of local land use and tax policies. She explores the theoretical controversies and clarifies issues such as the use of land use regulation as a fiscal tool, the effects of taxes on economic activity and the success of tax policies to promote economic development. In Parts II and III, a group of experts presents new research on important issues such as the impact of growth on tax burdens, metropolitan tax base sharing, the incidence of impact fees, and the shift to land value taxation in urban areas. Local Government Tax and Land Use Policies in the United States raises provocative questions concerning the conventional wisdom in fiscal policy. It will be indispensable for economists and students interested in urban issues and local public finance as well as planners and policy makers.

Book Description
This study offers frank evaluations and a pro-and-con analysis of various retrenchment strategies. It focuses specifically on how environmental conditions and administrative and political aspects of cities affect the decisions to implement specific retrenchment strategies during periods of revenue decline or stagnation. The book takes the reader beyond the rationalistic and incremental approach of urban decision-making and demonstrates that decisions requiring fiscal retrenchment can be confusing and ill-planned. It also reveals how any action taken by the city will reflect the chief executive officer's perception of what the situation demands. The first part of the book, The Evolution of Financial Decline, discusses the structural antecedents that have contributed to the decline of financial sources. Here, the major literature that investigates the causes and consequences of urban fiscal strain is reviewed. In Part Two, Reacting Toward Fiscal Stress, the chapters deal specifically with different management techniques available to municipalities to cope with resource decline. The strategic advantages and political ramifications of these approaches are discussed in detail. These chapters also provide an inventory of response techniques for urban managers. Part Three, Retrenchment and the Urban Policy Process, builds upon the garbage can model developed by March and Simon by proposing that the retrenchment process is haphazard and random. The book concludes with some considerations of what happens to the urban policy process during periods of resource scarcity. This book should appeal to anyone interested in public administration, urban studies or political science.

Managing Decline: Difficulties in Explaining Behavior.......2000-03-16
The United States has emphasized growth management, but managing decline is a different paradigm in this culture. Pammer's book offers the first detailed look at how municipal governments cope with declining resources and revenues. His analysis finds it very difficult to explain in a systematic way how local governments actually do that. While some may criticize him for his approach to looking at the problem, his examination reveals the true nature of how cities response to decline--it is random, sometimes haphazard, and unpredictable given circumstances surrounding the jurisdictions.
Having working in government, I can relate to what Dr. Pammer is showing. Although we are facing economic boom in the late 1990s and 2000, his his argument that managing decline is random is relevant for the future as well since economic booms can go bust. Therefore, the key issues for public and non-profit management is the following; Is there a concise way to cope with decline? Although Pammer does not mention the following points in a concise manner, his final observations elude to the fact that organizations need to be focusing on performance management and monitor stakeholder perceptions and concerns. These issue are particularly true of non-profit organizations.

Large Herbivore Ecology, Ecosystem Dynamics and Conservation (Conservation Biology)
ASIN: 0521810612 |
Book Description
The adaptation of herbivore behavior to seasonal and locational variations in vegetation quantity and quality is inadequately modelled by conventional methods. Norman Owen-Smith innovatively links the principles of adaptive behavior to their consequences for population dynamics and community ecology, through the application of a metaphysiological modeling approach. The main focus is on large mammalian herbivores occupying seasonally variable environments such as those characterized by African savannas, but applications to temperate zone ungulates are also included. Issues of habitat suitability, species coexistence, and population stability or instability are similarly investigated.

Book Description
Suitable for a one-semester course in general relativity for senior undergraduates or beginning graduate students, this text clarifies the mathematical aspects of Einstein's theory of relativity without sacrificing physical understanding.
The text begins with an exposition of those aspects of tensor calculus and differential geometry needed for a proper treatment of the subject. The discussion then turns to the spacetime of general relativity and to geodesic motion. A brief consideration of the field equations is followed by a discussion of physics in the vicinity of massive objects, including an elementary treatment of black holes and rotating objects. The main text concludes with introductory chapters on gravitational radiation and cosmology.
This new third edition has been updated to take account of fresh observational evidence and experiments. It includes new sections on the Kerr solution (in Chapter 4) and cosmological speeds of recession (in Chapter 6). A more mathematical treatment of tensors and manifolds, included in the 1st edition, but omitted in the 2nd edition, has been restored in an appendix. Also included are two additional appendixes – "Special Relativity Review" and "The Chinese Connection" - and outline solutions to all exercises and problems, making it especially suitable for private study.
Customer Reviews:
Poor choice of textbook.......2006-12-07
I chose this book as the text for an undergraduate mathematics seminar, thinking that the students
would like something very elementary. Unfortunately, the book's presentation isn't simply pedestrian---
it is completely muddled. Many elementary points are presented via circular arguments which simply left the students baffled and confused. It is a real pity to see an elegant subject like general relativity butchered
so thoroughly. In retrospect, it would have been far better to first have them read Rindler's ESSENTIAL
RELATIVITY, and then give them selected excerpts from the elementary track of GRAVITATION by Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler.
I couldn't use it........2004-07-08
This book has everything I found to be correct in a text book but when I tried to teach with it I found it to have a lot of mathematics and not much of physical ideas.
Landau's Classical Field Theory book is much better but it is for advanced level, so I still didn't find a proper book.
Now I will try Schutz one.
A great first book on general relativity.......2003-06-09
I like this book because it has the best elementary introduction to the mathematics of general relativity. It starts out with simple multivariable calculus and geometric notions about vectors. It then explains the ideas of the natural basis and the dual basis, first in a plane and then on a manifold, with very helpful figures. With too many other books it is possible in a first exposure to completely miss the point of these ideas, which really are pretty simple when you come right down to it. It is true that the physical motivation and meaning of general relativity are not treated in that much depth, but these can be picked up from other sources. In my view it is the mathematics that is the most intimidating thing about general relativity -- the physical ideas are exhilirating and natural by comparison!
Great for independant study.......2003-04-28
As a person who did postgrad physics and maths over 5 years ago and has been out of the field for way too long, I found that this was a great introduction to GR, a subject I never got to do at university. It introduces the maths (tensors, manifolds and geodesics) in the earlier chapters and relies heavily on them in the introduction to GR.
The book has great solutions, or at least very helpful hints, to the problems that are given throughout the book. Though at times I was stuck with some, it generally it required me to only look at the first step of the solution to be able to solve the problem.
This book is a quantitative approach, while "A First Course in General Relativity" (Schutz) is a more qualitative approach. I personally perfer the quantitative approach, and found this book better than Schutz. If you're looking for a more verbose and wordy book, go for Schutz, while if you're going for a mathematical approach (includes the derivation of the Schwarzchild's solution and the rise of black holes coming from Schwarzchild's solution) then this book is more for you.
Useless.......2001-11-24
The second edition of this book (which is what this is) is a terrible change for the worse. The first edition tried to introduce (the mathematics of) general relativity, in the "geodesics" method - i.e., taking the shortest route possible between two points, teaching you the mathematics and basic physical postulates and nothing more. But while the first edition used modern differential geometry, this volume has been entirely re-written in coordinates!!! This means you'll be given the old definition of a tensor as a set of numbers that transform as ... and thus taking away the book's only merit, being a modern, quick, short introduction to the mathematics of GR. Sorry, but even if I wanted a sea of indices (which I don't and no one else should) I could have picked up Weinberg's book. Try Schutz's book on general relativity instead.
