Far removed from the markets they're meant to serve, insensitive to market needs, inflexible in how they do business, America's oliuopolistic corporations are terrorizing consumers. The result is that the American market system does not work as it should, and indeed, performs far below its potential. Samli argues that the system should not be treated as though it were sacrosanct. Indeed, it must be made to do more than it is doing to encourage competition and create consumer value--things it neglects, says Samli, because of a mistaken notion that laissez-fairism is working well, and that in today's free economy things are just fine. Not so, and corporations are actually suffering on their bottom lines. By creating true consumer value and by stopping their headlong rush to merge and thereby decrease competition, corporations can achieve their profit goals more easily, and even establish higher ones. The trick is to pay more attention to their customers, to be more responsive to their needs and wishes, and in Samli's words, to turn a "kinder and gentler" face to the world. His book is a challenging, provocative declaration for policy makers in the public and private sectors, and for academics, an important adjunct to their studies of how business, government, and society interact. First, says Samli, merger mania must stop. Government must exercise its full power to protect, inform, and educate consumers--and take care that business, unchecked, does not prey upon them. He cites evidence that consumers are not equal, that many are frail and vulnerable, and that in many markets they are simply being ignored. Samli maintains that far from being hostile to business, he sees business as actually working against itself. If business thinks of, and works for, the benefit of the consumer, if it eschews strategies that simply cut costs and contribute to self-enlargement, consumers will become empowered. In fact, Samli calls for more regulation, not less, and for more competition. He also calls for consumers who are better educated, and for the nation to cultivate its resources--human and environmental--in ways that will enhance economic performance, not only for society that depends on corporations, but for corporations themselves that depend on society.

I can't really complain about the book, I hate Chem. It's pretty simple and you can understand most of the stuff if you look through the examples.

Not what I though.......2004-05-29
I enjoyed the essays that dealt with his life and his experiences in the theatre. The politically based essays aren't anything that I am interested in.
history coming alive.......2000-11-14
I read his first essay about Brooklyn on the NYT books site and had to buy the book. Miller captures the past while avoiding nostalgia and bitterness towards the present, a very hard trick to master. The Depression really comes alive in his books, as does the immediacy of the Communist witch hunt. For someone in her 20s, it's hard to imagine how visceral the fear must have been, but Miller describes the uneasiness in not knowing whether the world was becoming socialist, fascist, communist or holding on to democracy. His writing was also beautiful - perfectly constructed sentences.

On April 17, 1975, after five years of civil war, the Khmer Rouge guerrillas invaded Cambodia's major cities and forced the residents on a mass exodus to the countryside. Their leader, Pol Pot, established a government based on terror to bring about his dream of an agrarian society where work was done by hand—without what he believed to be corruptive influences. By the time the Vietnamese captured Phnom Penh and ended this brutal experiment in communism in 1979, an estimated two million Cambodians were dead and hundreds of thousands had begun to flee the country for refugee camps in Thailand.
Survivors of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge now living in the Midwest tell their stories in this work. Many of them were children during that time, unable to comprehend exactly what was happening and why, but now able to reveal the trauma they experienced.
Noeun Nor and Sinn Lok recollect being wrenched from their families and put into labor camps around the age of five. Prum Nath talks about her mother encouraging her to eat the last grains of her family's rice. Sokhary You remembers giving birth on a mountain without a doctor or hospital and using rusty scissors to cut the umbilical cord.

My son.......2007-04-18
My son herd sarah talk at his school and requested that i would buy this book for him. He read it and loved it. He has taught me a whole bunch about the history of Cambodia and the reasons that it all happend and what happened. I give this book 5 stars because even though i haven't read it my son has told me more about this book than any other that he has read deserving me to come back to this site and make sure other people buy this book and read it.

This is a great book. I personally know the author, and it took her over 13 years to write it. She interviewed many real cambodian refugees and did a lot of hard work. It is very informative.

Fermi Remembered-A magical time for 20th Century Physics.......2005-08-08
This book is based on a symposium held at the University of Chicago to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Enrico Fermi's birth on September 29, 2001. The editor, James Cronin, was principal organizer of the symposium. A distinguished list of speakers was assembled, and written versions of their reports are included in the book. Extensive research in the U of C archives produced many interesting documents, including letters to Fermi and by Fermi, and notes written in Fermi's hand on a wide range of topics. The results of this archival search are also included in the book.
The decade immediately after World War II was a magical time for physics. The success of the Manhattan Project, Radar, and many other defence applications of physical science attracted much talent to the field. It seemed that almost everyone wanted a PhD in physics, and graduate schools like Chicago were mobbed. Fermi was the center of attention, and the students that he trained, both individually and in classes, went on to illustrious careers.
This book covers many aspects of this exciting time. Space limitations in this review restrict my comments to only a few specifics. Fermi's computer program to calculate charged particle orbits in the cyclotron, written for the Los Alamos Maniac computer, is wonderful. It should be read by every programmer. The review talks by Fermi's colleagues, Richard Garwin, Murray Gell-Mann, and Marvin Goldberger, are not to be missed. The reading public interested in the history of 20th century science, in particular the period 1945-1954 when government support of peacetime research came into being, will find this book full of information not easily obtained elsewhere.
