    Book Description

Reform of welfare is one of the nation's most contentious issues, with debate often driven more by politics than by facts and careful analysis. Evaluating Welfare Reform in an Era of Transition identifies the key policy questions for measuring whether our changing social welfare programs are working, reviews the available studies and research, and recommends the most effective ways to answer those questions.

This book discusses the development of welfare policy, including the landmark 1996 federal law that devolved most of the responsibility for welfare policies and their implementation to the states. A thorough analysis of the available research leads to the identification of gaps in what is currently known about the effects of welfare reform.

Evaluating Welfare Reform in an Era of Transition specifies what-and why-we need to know about the response of individual states to the federal overhaul of welfare and the effects of the many changes in the nation's welfare laws, policies, and practices.

With a clear approach to a variety of issues, Evaluating Welfare Reform in an Era of Transition will be important to policy makers, welfare administrators, researchers, journalists, and advocates on all sides of the issue.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for anyone studying the law.......2006-04-26

I'm a college student with a legal studies concentration. I've taken 8 courses on our legal system so far, most of which concentrate on the judicial system. In two chapters this book covers more than any textbook I've been assigned for my courses. Pound's discussions on the application of law are worthwhile in and of themselves. This is clearly the definitive classic text on american jurisprudence, most of which is still relevant despite its age.
That said, there is a downside to the book. It takes hours to read certain pages. In a few sentences Pound manages to convey the same information other authors do in pages. This is not hyperbole. I'm currently taking Judicial Process and Business Law. The combined texts for those classes border on 750 pages. This one book discusses all of the same topics, in much more precise and clear language, in 168 pages. If you want to learn why the law is the way it is, this is the one book you must buy.

        Book Description

Controversies on the use and conservation of plant genetic information have become major obstacles in international negotiations on trade, agriculture and biodiversity conservation. This book examines the origins of these controversies. It stresses the importance of agricultural politics in
directing developments in conservation and intellectual property protection. Evidence for this argument is derived from historical and contemporary data on Europe and the USA, as well as fieldwork in Latin America.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12

Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

            Book Description

Successful characterization of polymer systems is one of the most important objectives of today's experimental research of polymers. Considering the tremendous scientific, technological, and economic importance of polymeric materials, not only for today's applications but for the industry of the 21st century, it is impossible to overestimate the usefulness of experimental techniques in this field. Since the chemical, pharmaceutical, medical, and agricultural industries, as well as many others, depend on this progress to an enormous degree, it is critical to be as efficient, precise, and cost-effective in our empirical understanding of the performance of polymer systems as possible. This presupposes our proficiency with, and understanding of, the most widely used experimental methods and techniques.
This book is designed to fulfill the requirements of scientists and engineers who wish to be able to carry out experimental research in polymers using modern methods. Each chapter describes the principle of the respective method, as well as the detailed procedures of experiments with examples of actual applications. Book Description

In the fields of biologically active materials and functional materials, fluorinated organic materials are becoming a focus of significant interest. Over the past decade synthetic methodologies and reagents in fluorine chemistry have been developed, especially stereocontrolled synthetic methods, enzymatic resolution to synthesize enantiomers, fluoromethylated reagents, and fluorination reagents. These methods have contributed to the opening of new pathways for fluorinated materials. However, few fluorinated materials have been put to commercial use. Furthermore, there remain problems to be solved, such as the handling of the materials, availability of reagents and selectivity (stereo-, regio-, and/or chemoselectivity). Research chemists, technical engineers, and graduate students in all branches of chemistry, pharmaceutics, and material science interested in fluorinated materials need to know detailed experimental procedures of how to synthesize the target fluorinated materials. This volume summarizes the chemical and microbial methods for obtaining functionalized fluorinated materials for use as building blocks; detailed experimental methods (reaction conditions, solvent, temperature, handling techniques, etc.); and the stereoview (possible absolute configuration) of the structures with spectral data. Mono-, di-, tri-, and polyfluorinated materials derived from fluorinating agents, fluoromethylated reagents and building blocks are summarized. A chemical name index, molecular formula index, and reagent index are also included. The publication of this monograph will provide access to the enormous possibilities in fluorine chemistry, biological material chemistry, and functionalized material chemistry.

                            Book Description

In this significant revision of his ground-breaking book, Hecht uses a compelling narrative presentation. Students will see the wonder of physics as Hecht uses real-life applications, an unparalleled art and photography program that motivates conceptual discussions, a presentation that anticipates students' questions, and an approach that emphasizes contemporary physics while interweaving historical perspectives.

Building on the numerous strengths of the First Edition, this book is now thoroughly revised throughout with approximately 800 new problems, a new five-step problem-solving framework for all examples, new sketch-art accompanying many examples, more biological applications, new do-it-yourself experiments, and so much more.

I'm really mad at our school for having this as our textbook.

This book talks too much about the history of physics than to focus on concepts and how to solve problems. It doesn't tell you what kind of equations you should use for what type of problems. Some answers on the back of the book are wrong.
This book is bad for both self studying and for class supplement.
This book is just not for studying physics nor for anything else. I'd say it's garbage.

THis is an excellent book...but you really have to be committed to learn anything (esp. Physics). You can't expect to just read through once and understand everything. This book makes the reader think deeply about physical concepts, but again, you have to be committed to grasp them throughly. It is a very interesting book. Excellent resource for to-be-researchers. In fact, it introduces the reader to very interesting facts about different researcher. I used to read it like a story book (some chapters took about a day to read) but i enjoyed it. If you want to learn physics and want to learn it with an open mind, this is the best book. I have taken an engineering physics course also and their book was very boring and confusing compared to this one. so..enjoy!

I bought this book for a class and was hoping it would help me through it, since my teacher was not the best. It just made it more confusing. The book is littered with information, just too much for a person taking algebra based physics. Most people taking Algebra based physics need a step-by-step approach at learning the subject matter. This book does a poor job at doing so. The concepts are not clear and concise, and fails when attempting to outline major equations. The problems in the back have answers for the odd problems, but how do we access answers to the even problems? Where's the student solution manual? It adds much difficulty to the learning process. Wouldn't recommend it.

This book is an excellent, comprehensive review of the authors and their major, (classic) works of the 19th century. It is written entirely in French. The authors who are covered include (but are not limited to) Mme. De Stael, Chateaubriand, LaMartine, De Vigny, Hugo, De Musset, Sand, Balzac, Stendahal, Merimee, Sainte Beuve, De Lisle, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmae, et Anatole France. It provides a great deal of historical information about the period: the prevalent philosophies of the era, and the various literary schools: romanticisme, realism, and naturalism. The book also details characteristics of period theater, poetry, and criticism. Extremely helpful are the numerous footnotes regarding intertextual references and ancienne usages of words, figures of speech. It provides a series of critical questions to assist the reader in assessing the content, philosophy and devices used by the author. It is a constantly valuable reference, not only for the literature itself, but also with regard to the study of literature, history, and philosophy in general, as characteristics that are in common with, or differ from literature of other languages and periods. All the literature books of this series by LaGard/Michard hold to this high standard.
