In North America industrial agriculture has now virtually displaced diversified family farming. The prevailing system depends heavily on labor supplied by migrants and immigrants, and its reliance on monoculture raises environmental concerns. In this book Jane Adams and contributors--anthropologists and political scientists among them--analyze the political dynamics that have transformed agriculture in the United States and Canada since the 1920s. The contributors demonstrate that people become politically active in arenas that range from the state to public discourse to relations between growers and their contractors or laborers, and that politics is a process that is intimately local as well as global.
The farm financial crisis of the 1980s precipitated rapid consolidation of farms and a sharp decline in rural populations. It brought new actors into the political process, including organic farmers and environmentalists. Fighting for the Farm: Rural America Transformed considers the politics of farm policy and the consequences of the increasing alignment of agricultural interests with the global economy. The first section of the book places North American agriculture in the context of the world system; the second, a series of case studies, examines the foundations of current U.S. policy; subsequent sections deal with the political implications for daily life and the politics of the environment.
Recognizing the influence of an array of political constituencies and arenas, Fighting for the Farm charts a decisive shift since the early part of the twentieth century from a discursive regime rooted in economics to one that now incorporates a variety of environmental and quality-of-life concerns.

VERY Helpful.......2007-05-27
You know you've been led astray before. Other books in this genre rely heavily on expensive, hard to find ingredients you've never heard of, forcing you to spend far more on searching and supplies than store bought versions of the finished products. This book is so simple and easy to follow, you'll smack yourself on the head and wonder "Why didn't I think of that?" Within an hour of cracking open this book, I had already tried out three different ideas. A handful of fresh Verbena on a string perfumed my living room, a new spray bottle of dryer scent was blessing my clothes with amber, and I was cleaning my kitchen counters with citrus scrub. The next day I was experimenting with creating new tea blends with the herbs in my garden. As days progressed, store bought sprays and cleaners were pushed aside and forgotten. I was so pleased! My only additional expenditure was a whole ten bucks on the two ingredients I didn't have - Borax and Soap Flakes - and now I can make all but two of the recipes in this book.
Speaking of recipes, the Tudor Lemon soap is probably the easisest, and thankfully, Julia Bird skips the animal fat and burning lye steps I've seen in other books. Just soap flakes and lemons, really, that's all you need. No need to endanger yourself at all. No need for goggles and a burn kit. None.
I love this book, and I feel I made a good investment by buying it. I think you'll like it too.

For anyone who wants a useful index of how to mix scentful herbs for food, oils for aromatherapy, natural and effectful house cleaners, keeping bugs out, etc - close to hand. It's got beautiful photography to illustrate it and it is very easy to follow, lots of tips on 'how to', psychological as well as physical impacts of the different scents. Basically an instruction for beeing one with nature in your everyday life making things a lot easier:-)

Beginning with a discussion about whether or not to allow children to believe in Santa Claus, Gardner recounts the history of the famous poem. In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore, a scholar of classical and Oriental languages, dashed off the ballad merely as a way of entertaining his two young daughters at Christmas. Originally titled "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", the poem describes an elf-sized Santa Claus and "tiny reindeer," so getting down the chimney was no stretch of the imagination. After the poem was published in a Troy, NY newspaper, its popularity quickly grew and the cult of Santa Claus took off. Copious illustrations show Santa's evolution in the hands of various artists.
After setting forth the original poem, Martin Gardner proceeds to later imitations, parodies, and sequels, beginning with a series of hilarious specimens all titled "The Night After Christmas." The book concludes with a discussion of the only significant addition to the Santa Claus legend since Moore's—Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Born as the hero of a Montgomery Ward Christmas giveaway pamphlet, Rudolph became famous when songwriter Johnny Marks put him into a song that swept not only the nation but also the world.
This wonderful tribute to the greatest Christmas poem of all time is the perfect holiday gift and a superb addition to Christmas book collections.

Of all places, the Wall Street Journal did a clever review (in verse, an imitation itself) on Saturday, December 3, 2005. Since you have to subscribe to see their web site a sample of the review goes like this:
"Twas the month before Christmas and all through the city
Like the influx of shoppers along came this ditty....
That what to our wondering eyes should appear
But a whole sheaf of send-ups to tickle the ear."
With 9- and 12-year-old sons, we've outgrown the usual picture books for Christmas, but they have developed great senses of humor. This book sounded like a lot of fun moving into the teen years, so I ordered it sight unseen. (They liked the review and were interested in the idea of the parodies.)

Influences on Euthanasia.......2007-08-01
Dowbiggin, a history professor at the Univ. of Prince Edward Island, has written an excellent introduction to the subject here. It is written in a way that the average educated person would understand, but it contains powerful ideas. He shows the way that ideas from outside medicine have helped shape the euthanasia debate. It is brief, but enlightening. Readers who want more depth will find it in his earlier book, _Merciful End_ about the American euthanasia movement.

This book is a disaster.......2007-06-14
This text is in its sixth edition and contains all types of errors. The text doesn't bother to even give the slightest idea of how expressions are derived. Many of the formulas are incorrect. Some of the exercises are absurd. The solutions manual is no better. My recommendation is that you buy either Cochran text if you're mathematically inclined or Yamane's Elementary Sampling Theory for a more hands-on text. Don't waste your time or money on this text.
I think this book is a waste of money. .......2007-02-11
I think this book is almost completely worthless. All it contains is 30 blank pages and 30 pages of definitions, most of which have nothing to do with statistics. For example, there are definitions of gain, union, voucher, strike, closing, journal, and firm.
Amazon's description of the book is also misleading. The statement that "Cram101 Textbook Outlines gives all of the outlines, highlights, notes, and practice-tests for your textbook." is completely wrong. You have to buy this material from their website.
I would have returned this book except it wasn't worth the shipping cost. Amazon wouldn't pay for the return since they sent me the book I ordered.
If you are taking survey stats save your money and ask your TA or professor to answer your questions.
