Income, Inequality, and Poverty During the Transition from Planned to Market Economy (World Bank Regional and Sectoral Studies)

The objective of this report is to consider one important part of the transition process for countries in Central and Eastern Europe: that is, the role that urban policy has played and continues to play in the move to market-based economies. Beside tracing the historical circumstances that affect the way cities in transition economies function, it shows the effects that these circumstances have on the opportunities and concerns that exist for policymakers. The report is organized as follows: Section 1 discusses the fundamental differences between the initial conditions in the region's transition economies and those in other countries. It considers the effects that socialist planning had on the distribution of population across cities and within cities, respectively, then it reviews the implications of these conditions for urban poverty. Section 2 considers the principal concerns for city management implied by these unique urban problems. There are at least three systemic issues that urban policies must address. They are allocating resources efficiently, managing social safety nets, and building strong local institutions. Section 3 provides proposals for action. It discusses the policies that can help achieve a more equitable, sustainable economic environment taking into account the historically unique features of urban development in the region. This section then goes on to identify priorities and strategies for the region and the World Bank.

Laos - the Lao People's Democratic Republic - in one of the least understood and studied countries of Asia. Its development trajectory is also one of the most interesting, as it moves from state, or perhaps more appropriately, subsistence, to market, at the same time as finding itself in a key geographical position in the fast-changing southeast Asian region, where, with boundaries more permeable, and new patterns of spatial integration forming, a new Greater Mekong sub-region is emerging. Based on extensive original research, this book, unlike others on Laos which concentrate on the macroeconomic picture, assesses how economic transition and marketization are being translated into progress (or not) at the local level, and at the resulting impact on poverty, inequality and livelihoods. It concludes that the process of transition in fact contributes to the growth of poverty for some people, and shows how people manage to cope in very unfavorable circumstances.

From the supplier: Market transition economies share one common feature, which is a growing disparity in real incomes and, therefore, increasing inequality in income distribution. The reduction of state subsidies, the shift of labor from state to the private sector, the creation of a newly affluent class and changes in asset ownership cause increasing income inequality, which in turn increases the number of both the rich and the poor. Policymakers are always concerned with ensuring fair income distribution but this concern becomes especially critical during the early years of systemic change and economic contraction as a nation shifts from a centrally planned to a free-market system. Poland's experience suggests that rapid growth makes for the easier resolution of income distribution issues.

Recent econometric evidence suggests that trade liberalization has an elusive relationship to growth and income distribution. This paper provides an explanation for these results via numerical simulations of a dynamic structuralist CGE. The conclusion is that if families become too poor to finance human capital accumulation, or the state too stingy to supply it at a reasonable cost, exports of skill-intensive goods can become uncompetitive and the transition to openness may involve increasing poverty, unemployment and stagnation. The model design incorporates an informal sector as well as accumulation of human capital. The paper simulates two trajectories, a ''green'' path in which per capita income grows steadily with a rapid rate of human capital accumulation and a reduction in the level of economic informality. A second, or ''red'' path is also possible, however, with a growth rate that is much lower, an expanding informal sector and an inadequate rate of human capital formation.

For anyone who is interested in Tractor History this book will be an outstanding source of information. There are also additional books for other time periods written by the same award winning arthor.

Very informative.......1998-10-05

This book has an excellent sampling of tractors in this era.Plenty of pictures and illustrations of the inner and outer workings of these machines.Not an encyclopedia or a how to manual but one can get a good general overview of the history of the tractor.

A limited edition of "Development of the Agricultural Tractor in the United States was compiled and printed in 1954 by the Agricultural Engineering Research Branch (Farm Machinery Section), Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. As demand for copies exceeded the supply, and since it was not practicable to arrange for a reprinting by the USDA, The American Society of Agricultural Engineers sponsored this second printing, in order that this comprehensive and notable contrivution to the early history of the ageicltural tractor might be given wider distribution. The offset plates used for the original printing were loaned to ASAE for this puopose. Except for the omission of five pages of tractor demonstration and tractor show scenes, this second printing is identical in content with the first. This 1974 edition was the first combined edition of Parts I and II. Part I represents agricultural tractors utilized in the United States from 1855 thru 1919. Part II represents agricultural tractors utilized in the United States from 1920 to 1950. The text includes hundreds of photo and illustations, descriptions of the tractors and tables on production and machinery specifications. Extremely unique book.

This is an excellent book if you want to understand Electrodynamics for what it really is-a relativistic field theory!

Very nice and concise book.......2006-04-26

Starts from the foundations of Special-Relativity, including Lorentz transformation, groups and spinors, then dynamics.
Formulation of Lagrangian fields and the conserved quantities is also very good, though I think Rohrlich's book is better.
Covers self-interaction and radiation reaction in a very clear way.
In short, for this price, it is truly a gem.

A beautiful little book.......2002-11-09

This is a concise, clear, friendly but unfussy little book on classical electrodynamics (CED), and relativistic fields. Simultaneously, it provides an easy introduction to the mathematical machinery of relativistic dynamics and fields. There is an agreeable emphasis on the Lagrangian formulations, a good-sized chapter devoted to radiation and radiation-reaction, and a (regrettably) short piece on action-at-a-distance CED. This book is about the structure of CED in general, and does not deal with particular arrangements of charges, currents, coils, etc. etc. in the manner of an undergraduate text on EM.

Learnin all about Classical Fields.......2000-03-23

On the subject of Classical fields, I have not read a better book than Barut's. It is clear and comprehensive. I discovered more about things like the Lorentz group and the Lagrangian formalism of fields than I thought existed. It is an excellent book by all standards. If you need to learn Quantum Field theory, start here first. Learn all about classical fields. The equations in this book are ready for quantization.

Family life.......2003-11-27

England on the eve of the modern period was a troubled place, but the Pastons made the most of it, rising from Norfolk farming to national celebrity. Their letters (covering a period from about 1420 to 1503) give a remarkably modern idea of their characters and much fascinating information about daily life, society, commerce and the law. The women as well as the men in the family come over as extremely well informed. This seems to be the only edition in print at the moment. The entire collection was last published in two parts in 1971 and 1976, edited by Norman Davis, but the letters included here have been well selected. The Paston Letters make an eventful and informative read.
