The Stanford Law Chronicles: Doin' Time on the Farm
Alfredo Mirande Manufacturer: University of Notre Dame Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0268022836 |
Book Description
"Alfredo Mirandé answers the question: What happens when a Latino heart ventures into the Anglo male head that is the Stanford Law School? 'En la tierra del ciego, el tuerto es rey' [In the land of the blind, the one-eyed person is king]. " W. Frank Newton, President, Beaumont Foundation of America; former Dean of Texas Tech School of Law and President of the State Bar of Texas"Mirandé's story will engage readers, provoke conversations, and deepen our knowledge of legal education. It is quite a book." Gerald López, New York University School of Law
"Ten times better than the other stories of what it is like going through law school, Mirandé's book brings a social scientist's critical eye to what goes on in the classroom, to competition for grades and law review membership, to the way white students and professors treat students of color at an elite school, and to a minority student's struggle to make his legal education a force for social change. A sobering read and real page turner!" Richard Delgado, University Distinguished Professor of Law and Derrick Bell Fellow, University of Pittsburgh
In the midst of a long and distinguished academic career, Alfredo Mirandé left his position as professor of sociology and chair of ethnic studies at the University of California, Riverside, to attend law school at Stanford University. This book is both an extraordinary chronicle of the events in his life that led him to make this dramatic change and a comprehensive, first-person account of the law school experience, written by a person of color. Mirandé delivers a powerful and moving critique of the obstacles he encountered and of systematic attempts to strip him of his identity and culture. He also reflects on the implications of an increasing number of women and minority law school students for law and legal education.
Covering all three years at Stanford, Mirandé describes the elitism and rigid hierarchies he encountered in the classroom and his resulting alienation and frustration. He also discusses law review, the Immigration Clinic where he successfully represented his first client, and the alternative Lawyering for Social Change curriculum that became a haven in an otherwise hostile environment. Interspersed with his account of law school are autobiographical snapshots and experiences, including that of the death of his brother, Héctor, which was the catalyst for his decision to pursue his childhood dream of attending law school and becoming a lawyer. This controversial book is certain to spark lively debate.

Rider of the Pale Horse: A Memoir of Los Alamos and Beyond
McAllister Hull , and Amy Bianco Manufacturer: University of New Mexico Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0826335535 |
Book Description
A scientist's recollection of his life as a junior member of the Manhattan Project, Rider of the Pale Horse recounts McAllister Hull's involvement in various nuclear-related enterprises during and after World War II. Fresh from a summer job working with explosives in the chemistry department of an ordnance plant, Hull was drafted in 1943, after his freshman year in college. Unlike other accounts written by scientists and historians of that era, Hull's narrative offers a realistic picture of the dangerous and messy job that GIs and civilian powder men were asked to do. Life in the workshops where bomb components were constructed was very different from life in the offices where they were designed.Hull's description of his postwar work supporting the Bikini Atoll tests in the Pacific and the early concerns about the effects of a hydrogen bomb explosion illuminate the Dark Age of nuclear weaponry. John Hull's handsome illustrations show technicians and scientists at work and bring the story to life.
Rider of the Pale Horse adds valuably to the total record of the most important technological development of the twentieth century.Richard Rhodes, author of The Making of the Atom Bomb
Hull gives a bottom-up view as seen by a foot-soldier. His account of the grubby details of the project is illuminated by his later view of its historical repercussions and bears new witness to a turning-point of history.Freeman Dyson, author of Disturbing the Universe
A recollection of life in the workshops where nuclear bomb components were constructed during the Manhattan Project.

The Exact Location of the Soul: New and Selected Essays
Richard Selzer Manufacturer: Picador ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Over three decades, Richard Selzer has brought his skills as a surgeon to the page, wrestling powerful descriptions of pain and deliverance into words. This collection gathers representative writings from the whole of his career, including set pieces like the four-part "Letter to a Young Surgeon" and frequently anthologized essays on such delicate matters as delivering the news of a death to loved ones (and what happens to the corpse afterward).Death is a constant theme in these essays, for "only in literature do the dead have a voice." Selzer has a marked talent for removing some of the mystery and fear from what is, after all, an inevitable process. He is also superb at describing such routine events of the surgical theater as the scrubbing of hands, the proper and improper functioning of blood and organs, and the instantaneous decisions that a doctor must make during a normal day. Selzer's style is often ornate--"What heartbroken psoriatic, surveying his embattled skin," he writes, "would not volunteer for an unanesthetized flaying could it but rid him of his pink sequins, his silver spangles?"--and not to every taste, but his gentle reflections on human frailty afford a revealing view of the practice of medicine, which Selzer clearly loves. "Say what you will about writing," he notes, "there is no more thrilling an achievement than the successful completion of a difficult surgical dissection." --Gregory McNamee

Couldn't finish it.......2004-04-22
I simply could not force myself to continue reading this book as the experience was not unlike stabbing myself over and over again with a pair of scissors. I am by nature a pragmatist and I prefer concrete things, but here's my take. This guy may have sold millions of books. He did the standard invocation of ancient greeks, the druids, God, etc, lots of fluffy words, to make himself feel erudite. But there's no there there. I would rather read a bad romance, which is what this book strives to be.
It is very easy to explain his writing style and why I hate it so much. One example: "Touch the great artery. Feel it bound like a deer." Another: "Press your ear against the body, .... as a child holding a seashell". My second favorite: "In the canals, cilia paddle silently, like an Iroquois canoe".
The all time best, about a regular Joe patient who "miraculously" healed: "Could such a man have felt the brush of wings?"
Get it? It's a harlequin for Yalies. I have newfound disrespect for both editorial writers and book award judges.
This book is not techinical, it is not emotional, it is poetic. You can't actually relate to any characters, there are none that I saw. If you like his writing, your favorite actors are William Shatner and Charlton Heston.
This is my first review. If you like this book, great. I just wanted to warn folks of what they're getting, not make a judgment about others reading preferences. Had I received this warning, I wouldn't have wasted my time.
Simply lovely.......2003-01-03
