Vietnam's economy has grown rapidly since its government introduced economic renovation policies (doi moi) in the late 1980s. Although still extremely poor, Vietnam is on its way to becoming an emerging market economy, but investors have become concerned that its strong performance cannot be sustained. Despite doi moi's success in stimulating structural changes, a wide range of market-oriented institutions must still be developed, if Vietnam is to maintain macroeconomic stability and broad-based growth. Without that, its growth could become narrow and urban centered,and this would have profound negative implications for the reduction of poverty, the pace of urbanization, and Vietnam's ability to manage urban congestion. The editors and their contributors address issues of institutional development as the key to continuing Vietnam's successful transition to a market economy and to improve the welfare of its people. Among the book's themes are the need to clearly define the complementary roles of the public and private sectors, and the need to strengthen the government's capacity to perform its unique functions effectively. Economic policies that provide the incentives for investment and production are a necessary, but not sufficient, component of the development process. The volume clearly shows that what is going on in Vietnam is relevant to most developing countries, and that these processes are of crucial concern to international business-people.

Contributors present reviews of the literature in their particular area and also present ideas for future research.

This textbook is intended for undergraduates who are carrying out laboratory experiments in the physical sciences for the first time. It is a practical guide on how to analyze data and estimate errors. The necessary formulas for performing calculations are given, and the ideas behind them are explained, although this is not a formal text on statistics. Specific examples are worked through step by step in the text. Emphasis is placed on the need to think about whether a calculated error is sensible. Students should take this book with them to the laboratory, and the format is intended to make this convenient. The book will provide the necessary understanding of what is involved, should inspire confidence in the method of estimating errors, and enable numerical calculations without too much effort.

The best teacher of stats I've had.......2002-02-14
I have taken a few physics labs at this point and have seen my share of appendices on statistics in the back of the lab manuals. They taught me about how to plug in the numbers and told me a little bit about why the equations mattered, but little else.
This slim, inexpensive book has done a magnificent job about teaching you not only how to do the math (it includes problems and has solutions in the back) but also how to think about different types of experiment error, and where it is appropriate to use certain equations or error-propagation approximations. If you ever have trouble with basic lab statistics, or are just getting started as a science major, this is a great book to have.
Great book for experimental physics students........1998-03-10
This book really covers it all - from error handling and propagation to how to make data regression for data analysis and so on - for the experimental physics student. It's very well written in a direct and right-to-the-point way. Definatly a great book.

Well Researched and fascinating read!.......2006-10-01
Larry Arnold asks the right questions and provides readers of his book a real window into the "twilight zone." It doesn't matter if one is a "bus-driver, butcher, baker or candlestick maker" what matters is that intelligent, research is done. Logical questions are asked and those who would dismiss spontaneous Human Combustion as nothing more than a "cigarette fire" are left with a feeling so uncomfortable they either drop the book in alarm or read and learn. Fascinating and thorough and it left me asking what really is going on? We may have answers in Physics, who knows. What I do know is that Larry Arnold has written a very well researched and entertaining book and he has taken "heat" for daring to write about a subject the debunkers would rather have people not look into. Spontaneous Human Combustion does happen and it happens to people who have lived through it! Read this and prepare to have your brain turned around to consider how these cases can happen especially when you find out how extremely hot a crematorium oven has to get inorder to consume a human body even then, some bone fragments are still left and have to be "ground" into powder. Fine paper wasn't burned next to some of these bodies that were reduced to "powder" while sitting in a chair. Why????

Great addition.......2000-11-04
As a scientist working for the United States Government during the 80's I must applaud Larry's effort here. After aquiring my PHD in Chemistry I started working for the government during the Reagan Administration doing basic research into possible explanations for the paranormal. While defunking most of them, SHC was one of the more interesting to me. Larry provides clear insight using mostly interviewing techniques to elaborate. I may be biased due to my previous experience here, but I enjoyed this book as a scientist.

I actually have been doing a continous report on spontaneous human combustion and came across this book while looking for information. Do you seriously think a school bus driver will have any scientific information? His facts were either made up to his liking or none existant. If you want to believe in something you will do everything you can to make it true. In this book, that is what Larry E. Arnold did. If you're looking for simple entertainment this book will work fine but if you want the truth or something vaguely similar this book is not worth your time.

From the supplier: States and localities in various parts of the US are aggressively confronting the EPA on issues involving the enforcement of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Should states fail to meet performance standards and deadlines, the EPA announced that it will cut off the state's federal funding for highway construction. Many states such as California have expressed their preference to hold off state-run pollution testing in an attempt to delay the transfer of costs to taxpayers.
