Book Description
"Colker's book provides a comprehensive review of the ADA's history and a thorough analysis of how effective it has been in vindicating the rights of the disabled. She does not paint a pretty picture, but it is an accurate, empirically based assessment."
Trial
"[A] comprehensive, factually-supported, and carefully reasoned book in a manner worthy of academic interest. At the same time, [Colker] writes in a plain style free of academic jargon and returns consistently to the human-interest arena of practical ramifications."
New York Law Journal
"This book is must reading for teachers, school administrators, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, disability rights lawyers, and Deaf Community leaders who hope to help take the citizen ship interests of deaf and hard-of-hearing people to the next level. The book helps these constituencies make the essential connections between raising and educating deaf children and the rights and opportunities those children hope to enjoy."Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education

Introduction.
"
The Disability Pendulum chronicles societal views and court reactions to the evolving ADA. Ruth Colker shows that public acceptance and inclusion of persons with disabilities into society is as much driven by attitudes about disability as by law and policy themselves. Colker offers an enriched and fresh analysis of the forces affecting the civil rights movement of persons with disabilities in American society."
Peter Blank, Charles M. and Marion Kierscht Professor of Law and Director, Law, Health Policy & Disability Center, University of Iowa College of Law
"Ruth Colker's book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in disability rights. Colker has long been one of the most astute observers of the development of disability rights in the courts. This book lays out the compelling story of what the ADA was intended to do and what the courts have done to the ADA. The book is both inspiring and sobering."
Chai Feldblum, Georgetown University Law Center
"
The Disability Pendulum helps us to appreciate that how we address these issues will shape the lives of the next generation of children with disabilities."The Law and Politics Book Review
Signed into law in July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became effective two years later, and court decisions about the law began to multiply in the middle of the decade. In
The Disability Pendulum, Ruth Colker presents the first legislative history of the enactment of the ADA in Congress and analyzes the first decade of judicial decisions under the act. She assesses the success and failure of the first ten years of litigation under the ADA, focusing on its three major titles: employment, public entities, and public accommodations.
The Disability Pendulum argues that despite an initial atmosphere of bipartisan support with the expectation that the ADA would make a significant difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities, judicial decisions have not been consistent with CongressÆ intentions. The courts have operated like a pendulum, at times swinging to a pro-disabled plaintiff and then back again to a pro-defendant stance. Colker, whose work on the ADA has been cited by the Supreme Court, offers insightful and practical suggestions on where to amend the act to make it more effective in defending disability rights, and also explains judicial hostility toward enforcing the act.

Book Description

Book Description
Excited states and free radicals are involved in the normal physiology of living systems, in pathological processes (including lipid peroxidation, inflammation, Parkinson's disease, cancer, and aging), in the mechanisms of drug action, and in the photochemotherapies such as the PUVA therapy
for skin diseases and PDT for cancer. This text introduces the reader to this rapidly expanding field, one that lies at the borderlines of physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and medicine. The authors explore in particular how time-resolved spectroscopic methods have found solutions at the
molecular level to biological and medical problems. Topics include the nature of excited states and free radicals and the techniques for their study, activated oxygen species, DNA, proteins, carotenoids and photosynthetic reaction centers, photodermatology and melanogenesis, and aspects of cancer
related to radio-, chemo-, and photodynamic therapy. Researchers and graduate students in photochemistry, photobiology, photomedicine, radiation chemistry and biology, and cancer therapies will find this book to be of very significant interest.
Book Description
Written in an informal yet substantive style that is a joy to read, this book provides a uniquely engaging, in-depth introduction to the concepts of quantum physics and their practical implementation, and is filled with clear, thorough explanations that help readers develop insight into physical ideas and master techniques of problem-solving using quantum mechanics.
Fully explores the concepts and strategies of quantum mechanics, showing the connections among the physical concepts that govern the atomic and sub-atomic domain of matter, and examining how these concepts manifest themselves in the mathematical machinery of quantum mechanics. Focuses on the explanations and motivations of the postulates that underlie the machinery of quantum mechanics, and applies simple, single-particle systems in one dimension. Illuminates discussions of ideas and techniques with a multitude of examples that show not just the answers but also the reasoning behind them, and adds dimension to the subject with historical, biographical and philosophical references throughout.
Designed for a wide range of readers interested in various branches of physics and engineering physics.
Customer Reviews:
Got me through Quantum Mechanics .......2007-03-14
A classmate recommended this book to me when I was struggling with upper division quantum mechanics in college. It was a lifesaver. The book is a terrific introduction to quantum. It explains both the concepts and the math, and it's a relatively easy read because the explanations are so clear. It is a worthwhile read for any physics student struggling with quantum mechanics. Really, one of the best physics books I've encountered. I can't gush enough about this book. I wish Morrison would write books covering all the undergraduate physics topics.
Superb introduction to QM.......2006-05-20
This book explains the mathematics, relates the math to the postulates, while guiding the reader (i.e., user) to using the postulates and the math to solve problems in Quantum Mechanics.
I have only the basics of Differential Equations and mechanics/dynamics (self-taught), but this book generally includes everything needed beyond calculus to work through the examples. (And even some of the calculus.)
My only criticism is the lack of solutions for the problems. That the book includes many worked examples largely overcomes this flaw.
In fact, this book is much like having a REALLY GOOD professor who explains and works through the examples with you, then offers good homework problems to do on your own. (The only thing that is missing is to have a teaching assistant correct your mistakes.
)
Another reviewer criticized this book as 'wordy' -- I call those clear and complete explanations. The open layout, short paragraphs and sections, as well as the explanations for most every step of the math make this book easy to pick up and read.
If you want 'terse' then buy something else, or just skip the explainations whenever you don't need them.
Morrison even includes much of the background math and physics instead of just assuming that you know this from previous classes or studies. Practically every chapter offers suggestions for deeper or alternative understanding of the topics covered. These are thoughtul reviews and descriptions, not mere bibliographical afterthoughts.
This is a fantastic book for self-study (or to accompany a confusing class or text). If you can make it through the first few chapters (perhaps chapters 2-4), even with difficulty, then the book will become VERY READABLE.
If you have an under-developed background in math, then expect to work hard in the beginning, but do expect that this book can be understood by anyone with a serious interest in learning quantum mechanics.
Quantum boy.......2004-11-08
I think this book is one of the best introductions to Quantum Physics. Although it is a bit wordy, it is evident that the author has a great passion for the subject and does a great job of explaining all the basic terminology, concepts and mathematics behind this great theory of modern physics. The book also takes a more applied approach to the subject and enables the beginning student to much more easily see the connection between the mathematics of QM and experiment. Highly recommended as either an undergraduate textbook or as a supplement to other "standard" textbooks such as Liboff or Griffiths.
A Wonderful Approach to QM.......2000-08-24
Thank you Dr. Morrison for a wonderful text on Quantum Mechanics.
This text covers everything relevant to Quantum Mechanics. It addresses the ambiguity of many concepts. He takes a single term or concept, writes it once, and then rewrites it using several different approaches. He leaves nothing to guess.
He tells you when you have just encountered an important milestone in your reading then warns you, before going on, to reread the previous section or chapter.
He poses questions in the text that you yourself are thinking. He then clarifies those questions. He does not assume you were ever taught or fully understood such things as the "Postulate of Quantum Dynamics", or whether "Stationary states really exist."
Dr. Morrison's approach, to the sometimes complicated concepts of QM, is a work of art. He could teach this stuff to elementary school children. I anxiously await the full exploits of Vol.II and the development of the Hydrogen atom.
Please hurry Dr. Morrison!
An Outstanding Text in Quantum Physics.......2000-05-18
Review of Morrison's Understanding Quantum Physics, A User's Manual
As a physics teacher and a student of Quantum Mechanics for many years, I have been particularly disappointed with the dirth of good texts for beginning students. There are worthwhile texts for those who understand the basics sufficiently, but Quantum Mechanics presents special difficulties to the neophyte: duality, probablility, transforms, correspondence, wave mechanics, matrix mechanics, Fourier analysis, continua and discrete spectra, commutation, operators, observables, measurement, and much more.
Morrison covers these topics clearly and in great detail, aimed squarely at the beginner. I am always fond of teachers who follow themes, reintroducing concepts over and over to show how they support new ideas. These are teachers who use nuance that you do not notice until you read the tale a second and third time. Morrison does that. An author with complete control over the subject matter, he proposes to create for the reader a powerful, understandable tool for examining the micro world, and he succeeds admirably.
Many texts have disappointed me because I find inconsistencies, unclear definitions, examples with so little discussion supporting them that they are impossible to understand. Not so with Morrison. I have read and studied this entire book at least three times over the past 1 1/2 years. I have found no inconsistencies in the math, nothing that wasn't clear within a couple of readings. Indeed each reading brought greater clarity, since each time I understood more of the coming tale than I did when I first read it. QM requires study and insight, a pondering of the issues. Morrison offers a clear, methodical approach, rather than difficult, inconsistent prose and math. Each time I read it, I see Morrison's craft as an author and a teacher.
Examples densely populate the text, a good number of which I have seen nowhere else. Every topic benefits from them and from dozens of problems which build upon each other. If I had difficulty with a problem, I tried earlier ones, moving back through the chapters until I discovered where my understanding went faulty.
I must admit a certain admiration for Morrison's ability to create a text for beginners that can generate understanding and clarity during graduate studies. I also admire the detail with which the publisher presented the mathematical formulae: attention to super- and sub- scripts, to summation indices, to counters. I found no mistakes in the math.
Not all topics are covered. Missing are discussions on relativistic QM; 3 dim aspects (he focuses on 1-dim distributions and indicates how to move to 3D); Dirac notation (mentioned modestly); spin and angular momentum; the Hydrogen atom orbitals. I agree with him, arguably, that these can be relegated to "advanced topics". What he does cover (see list above) is done superbly well. His next book will no doubt cover these topics as thoroughly and rigorously.

Book Description
A Companion to Contemporary Britain covers the key themes and debates of twentieth-century history from the outbreak of the Second World War to the end of the century. Comprising 30 essays written by leading international scholars, it provides readers with a single-volume reference to the varied perspectives dominating historical writing on this period. The volume opens with an assessment of the impact of war, before moving on to examine Britain 's continuing role in the wider world, particularly the legacy of Empire, Britain 's 'special relationship ' with the United States, and integration with continental Europe. Domestic politics, the economy, society, and popular culture are also covered, including such topics as class consciousness, immigration and race relations, changing gender roles, and the impact of the mass media.Where essays include discussion of the last years of the century, they often present the first assessment of recent developments from a self-consciously historical perspective.

5 star read.......2005-05-17
This book had a big meening for me because I knew the crew of the Pride very well.I was on the tall ship Te Vega with Jennifer who was my watch officer. Our crew spent alot of time getting to know the Pride crew.It hit our crew very hard when we heard the Bad news. This book is a must read.
Victims of Nostalgia.......2004-12-22
The Baltimore clipper schooners, famous for their speed, pestered the British in the War of 1812. They were slender and fast, low in the water but with two extremely tall, swept-back masts. The city fathers of Baltimore in the 1970s figured the city needed something to be proud of. It had lost its football team, crime was up, and the docks were in decay. To boost civic pride, a replica Baltimore clipper was proposed, and eagerly funded, built, staffed and sailed. _The Pride of Baltimore_ was a gorgeous ship, looking smart in any display of the beloved Tall Ships. In fact, it was first proposed to be a dockside museum, but it eventually became a seagoing craft, spreading the good name of Baltimore (and business interest in it) to Europe. The plan to resurrect the Baltimore clipper was a resounding success. Unfortunately, lots of the clippers had sunk two centuries ago, largely due to their top-heaviness, and _The Pride_ did so, too, in 1986, in an unexpected storm as she was returning to Baltimore from the Virgin Islands. Four of the crew of twelve perished. In _Pride of the Sea: Courage, Disaster, and a Fight for Survival_ (Citadel Press) Tom Waldron has given the story of the ship and the disaster, a story which ought to please true-life adventure fans. He also comes to some sensible conclusions about how the accident happened, beyond the simple explanation "freak storm."
When the proposal for a new Baltimore clipper was made, one of the first naval architects to consider the job wrote, "... an exact replica of an old sailing vessel is unlikely to meet Coast Guard requirements." Indeed, the civic boosters and the architect who got the job made a conscious decision not to have _The Pride_ certified by the Coast Guard. It was risky to sail on her, but it was authentic, and it appealed to those who loved ships with sails. There was a crew of both old salts and rookies, none of whom were over thirty. Six of them were newcomers to the boat. A violent, unexpected squall of sixty knots simply pushed over _The Pride_; there had been a risky maneuver to bring the ship under better control, but the risk had not paid off. The ship rapidly took on water, and with no compartmentalization, sank quickly. The rafts failed to work properly; only one could be inflated, so that the eight survivors had to make do on a raft that would have been crowded with its recommended crew of six. Waldron expertly describes the chaos of the sinking and the hellish five days on the raft afterwards. Time after time, ships passing near enough to see them did not see them, until a Norwegian supertanker picked them up. The only lightness in the raft comes from a couple who had fallen in love on the boat. The young woman said matter-of-factly, "I don't want to go through life without being proposed to." Her boyfriend, taken aback, issued one of the strangest proposals ever: "Sure, Leslie, if we survive, we'll get married." And so they did, after funerals and investigations and recriminations, all recounted here.
_The Pride_ and its four lost crewmen were sacrificed to nostalgia, a dream of the romantic days of sail without recalling the nightmares the sea can bring. Nothing symbolizes this as much as the hand-held radio beacons that would have sent signals to satellites when the ship was in danger. Both beacon devices were available to anyone who could grab one, but they were inaccessible, mounted on the inside of the doomed vessel. The reason? They were too modern to be kept out on deck and detracted from the vessel's historic aspect. Waldron's terrific account of the loss of _The Pride_ recounts many such lapses. _Pride of Baltimore II_ has been built, and to modern standards this time. But as a survivor reminds us, the most modern of boats are going down, too: "When you go out to sea, it's a big place out there and the sea has all the power."
Sad Memory, Wonderful Tribute.......2004-06-07
Having lived in Maryland until just a couple of years ago, I clearly remember the Pride and when she sank. I was at Martin's Airport with a friend the day the survivors returned, and it was a moving experience. I cried seeing these people, whom I had never met, yet knowing what they'd been through and seeing the sadness on their faces. It's one of those moments in time that you know you'll always remember, but life goes on and it fades into the background. But seeing this book at our local book store brought it all back to me in vivid color. I shared the experience with my husband, told him about this beautiful beloved ship that we were all so proud of and the pain every Marylander felt when we heard the news that she was lost, and that some of its crew were lost with her. This book is a moving, loving tribute to our beloved Pride and her crew and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates the sea.
A great read.......2004-06-07
Having grown up on the Atlantic Ocean, this story was captivating to me. It is almost unbelieveable how dangerous the ocean can become in a matter of minutes; the author, Tom Waldron, did a great job of describing the fury of the ocean at it's most violent.
Waldron put the story together in a logical, readable format. He included a lot of interesting information about how the ship was built, the history of sailing ships, especially clipper ships, and even included numerous pictures, so one is able to attach faces with names in the narrative.
Interesting to me was the description of the life on board the Pride -- lack of space below, lack of showers, etc. A very primitive existance. The vivid descriptions of the storms were captivating -- made the book hard to put down.
Finally, the section about the aftermath was most compelling. Waldron described in detail the suffering and emotional roller coaster the survivors went through until their rescue. I recommend this book highly.
A true life adventure rivaling fictional sea stories.......2004-05-22
This book is a page turner. Very well written, with both historical information regarding this type of ship, and this ship in particular. Those parts of the book discussing the sailing characteristics of the Pride were highly interesting from a technical standpoint, and when applied to the storm situations described, made pretty exciting reading.
I found the backround information on the ship's crew, the story of how the ship was built, and the aftermath of the sinking, added greatly to the books interest. The story of the crews stuggle to survive after the Pride sank rates with any survival-at-sea saga that I have ever read. The details provided are just amazing, and make you feel like you were right in the raft.
This book is as good a read as you will find in current literature.
Book Description
Part critique of existing policy and practice, part call-to-action, Technology and Literacy in the Twenty-First Century explores the complex linkage between technology and literacy that has come to characterize American culture and its public educational system at the end of the twentieth century.
To provide a specific case study of this complex cultural formation, award-winning educator Cynthia L. Selfe discusses the Technology Literacy Challenge, an official, federally sponsored literacy project begun in 1996 that has changed—at fundamentally important levels—the definition of literacy and the practices recognized as constituting literate behavior in America. Selfe tries to identify the effects of this new literacy agenda, focusing specifically on what she calls "serious and shameful" inequities it fosters in our culture and in the public education system: among them, the continuing presence of racism, poverty, and illiteracy.
She describes how the national project to expand technological literacy came about, what effects it has yielded, why the American public has supported this project, and how teachers of English, language arts, and composition have contributed to this project, despite their best intentions.
A primary goal of this study is to make teachers of English and composition increasingly aware of the new literacy agenda and to suggest how they might positively influence its shape and future direction, both in the classroom and in the community. This awareness is an integral part of educators' larger professional responsibility to understand the way in which our culture thinks about and values literacy. Perhaps even more important, argues Selfe, this awareness is part of teachers' ethical responsibility to understand how literacy and literacy instruction directly and continually affect the lived experiences of the individuals and families with whom teachers interact.

Book Description
Scientific management: technology spawned it, Frederick Winslow Taylor championed it, Thorstein Veblen dissected it, Henry Ford implemented it. By the turn of the century, practical visionaries prided themselves on having arrived at "the one best way" both to increase industrial productivity and to regulate human behavior. Martha Banta takes a close look at texts ranging from mail order catalogs and popular romances to the works of Henry Adams and Nathanael West to trace the effects of the efficiency craze on the full fabric of American culture.

Book Description
Knowledge is the basic output of the defense technology establishment in the United States; it is what enables the development of weapon systems. From this premise, this volume explores the process of knowledge production in defense technology from the beginnings of the Cold War to the present time. Produced through the process of research and development (R&D), technical knowledge for defense is an economic commodity. It is "fundable" in the sense of having future value. Like other commodities in the futures market, it is purchased before it is produced. But unlike those other commodities, this knowledge is typically produced through the joint efforts of the customer and the vendor. br br This study highlights two polar aspects of knowledge production: technology development and technology transfer. It centers on the present, shifting concept of defense conversion that is redefining defense technology policy. The book also includes cited documents pertaining to the transactions that engage customers and vendors in the process of knowledge production. The documents constitute a literature of needs and claims, and they reveal two chief properties: problem formulation and tactical positioning. Apart from the substantive yield of these particular documents, the strategy of evidence in this volume has broad implications for further study, suggesting a means of analyzing knowledge production in other large social systems. br

Starring the Text: The Place of Rhetoric in Science Studies
ASIN: 0805894330 |
Book Description
The ubiquity of the Internet and digital technology has changed the sites of rhetorical discourse and inquiry, as well as the methods by which such analyses are performed. This special issue discusses the state of rhetoric of science and technology at the beginning of the twenty-first century. While many books connecting rhetorical theory to the Internet have paved the way for more refined and insightful studies of online communication, the articles here serve as a reflective moment, an opportunity to consider thoughtful statements from those who have published and been influential in the field.
