    Book Description

Employing a rational-choice approach, Professor Ramseyer studies the impact of Japanese law on economic growth in Japan. Toward that end, the author investigates the way law governed various markets, and the way that people negotiated contracts within those markets. Findings reveal that the legal system generally promoted mutually advantageous deals, and that people generally negotiated in ways that shrewdly promoted their private best interests. Whether in the markets for indentured servants, prostitutes, or marriage partners, this study reports little evidence of either age- or gender-related exploitation.

5 out of 5 stars Sheep dogs my faithful friends.......2000-11-27

This book is all about the history and Eric Hasall's own experiences of working sheep dogs and the shepherds and farmers who's work relies on them, there are lots of tales and stories about these clever dogs that are sad, funny, courageous, and heart warming. Eric travles all around Britain going into every county and region to find these remarkable dogs that are devoted to their masters and companions. The book also has points about buying a pup, training it, housing and feeding it and the exciting world of sheep dog trails. this book is not a pet owners guide, but one for real working sheep dog enthusiasts.

This friendly self-help workbook covers mathematics essential to first-year undergraduate scientists and engineers. In the second edition of this highly successful textbook the author has completely revised the existing text and added a totally new chapter on vectors. Mathematics underpins all science and engineering degrees, and this may cause problems for students whose understanding of the subject is weak. In this book Jenny Olive uses her extensive experience of teaching and helping students by giving a clear and confident presentation of the core mathematics needed by students starting science or engineering courses. The book contains almost 800 exercises, with detailed solutions given in the back to allow students who get stuck to see exactly where they have gone wrong. Topics covered include trigonometry and hyperbolic functions, sequences and series (with detailed coverage of binomial series), differentiation and integration, complex numbers, and vectors.

2 out of 5 stars Verbose and generally not helpful........2006-12-31

I am a mathematics teacher, at the secondary, community college, and college (undergrad and graduate) level. This book does not address the basic needs of the struggling student, namely: what is mathematics for? Further, the book is verbose so that even the successful student will get bogged down in the sheer magnitude of the book.

                5 out of 5 stars A truely fantastic bookl.......2006-08-17

It has been many years since I studied any maths , and then only at a fairly basic level. This book takes me to places I never knew existed before, but to my amazement I could actually understand what was being taught.I especially found the step by step solutions to the problems most helpful.Unlike some texts that just give you the answers, and you are left wondering "how did they come up with that"? All in all a most user freindly book.

5 out of 5 stars Precalculus the Quick Way with Vectors (i,j,k).......2006-08-12

I use this as a precalculus book. I pick it over a normal precalculus for two reasons: one I only wanted to do math that only pertain to science and engineering and second because she had a chapter on vectors which I wanted to learn.
Don't be fool by the size of this book. The book is about the size of a Webster Dictionary but it really doesn't take that long to finish it. She only make you do the average about 6 to 13 problems in each section so you will breeze though the book fairly fast.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for self study.......2002-12-23

As a finance professional, I was becoming overwhelmed with the growing complexity of financial products. Over time, my patch work math education was beginning to fray resulting in growing frustration and loss of confidence.

Jenny Olive's book is very helpful for people entering into a self study math program to bring together their fragmented college level math education and build mathematical understanding. If you were like me, the fast pace of college level courses forced you to cut corners and rush through material without the deep understanding that builds confidence. The book begins with Algebra and moves on to Trig and Calculus. The explanations are extremely lucid and the exercises are put together intelligently to move you toward greater complexity. And yes, there is no substitute for working out the problems as any good mathematician will tell you. I disagree with a previous reviewer on this score. Although, I felt (somewhat arrogantly) that I did not need to review Algebra, I found myself red faced and stuck in some of the more advanced problems. Fortunately the clear explanation and repeated problem solving gave me the insights that I was lacking. I found it helpful to work with a graphing calculator to help visualize some of the mathematics. It's also a great way to learn a graphing calculator!

I understand that Ms. Olive is adding two new chapters to her next edition, which she has kindly made available on her website for persons who own the current version. It would be nice if she would make it available in a downloadable PDF version.

I am hoping that the author will choose to follow this up with similar books on Probability and Linear Algebra. Her recommendations for further reading would also be very helpful. Great math books (and math teachers)are worth their weight in gold. Buy this book for your math library. You won't regret it.

                5 out of 5 stars A great review.......1999-06-06

I didn't take any Math senior year, and I took 2 years off after high school, and now I'm going to be a Computer Science major, so I really needed this book! I bought it a week ago and I'm halfway done, so now I won't have to take precalculus over again. The previous reviewer is right, it could include more, but if I have time, I'll just buy a Schwab outline to cover vectors and so on. One thing about this book is that it has few exercises, which is fine, because what person self-studying is actually going to do 30 exercises . . . I would, but the few exercises gets me moving through the material faster.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Version to Buy.......2005-12-17

I bought the book at a bookstore and realized that Oxford has a slightly different version: "Notes from the Underground and the Gambler" (Oxford World's Classics).

The Oxford book is almost 300 pages long, or twice as big as other "Notes" books, and is divided into four parts.

                  1. There is a 13 page review or mini-biography of Dostoevsky and his life, along with an analysis of "Notes" and "The Gambler," plus a bibliography of references.

                  2. There is the "Notes" section part I.

                  3. Then there is the "Notes" section part II which is a story "Concerning The Wet Snow."

                  4. Finally, there is a short novel "The Gambler" written around the time of "Crime and Punishment."

I read the first few pages of Notes and the biography, but was immediately captured by "The Gambler" and read it almost non-stop start to finish. It is a very well written and compelling story about a young gambler - written in the narrative - that must reflect Dostoevsky's own passion for gambling in that period. This is the novel typed by Anna Grigorevna, a young 18 year old shorthand typist, who became his second wife. Together they produced "The Gambler" in just 25 days in October 1965. It is a wonderful story and one immediately understands the fame of Dostoevsky.

"Notes" is a source of inspiration for many modern writers. It fictional and is not a biographical or similar description of Dostoyevsky. It is broken into a series of 11 chapters or really two to four page essays followed by a short story. It is in the narrative form and describes the introverted life and thoughts of a young Russian. The first part is a bit choppy but obviously and excellent and interesting read. I have taken these points from another detailed analysis found elsewhere (from Paul Brians but not unique):
-1) it contains an all-out assault on Enlightenment rationalism,
-2) it is an outstanding example of Dostoyevsky's psychological skills,
-3) depicts his profound self-contempt combined with an exquisitely sensitive ego,
-4) the story contains one of the first characters whose childhood experiences have led him to fear love and intimacy even though he longs for them, and
-5) it portrays one of the first anti-heroes in fiction.
The latter figures were to dominate much serious fiction in the mid-twentieth century, notably Albert Camus' Meursault in The Stranger.

Highly recommend this version from Oxford.

5 out of 5 stars A Tour to Despair and Rebellion to Common Sense.......2002-12-06

A typical taste from the book:A shaken woman, deeply wounded in her soul, a poor woman forced to be a prostitute in order to feed her children, comes to the Man from the Underground for moral support. Now listen what he says to her:"In fact, you know what I really need:that you go to hell, that's what.I need peace. And I am willing to sell the whole World for a kopeyka just not to be disturbed. The World may go to hell or I won't drink my tea!Well, you know what I tell you,the World may very well go to hell, just that I can drink my tea in peace."

If you want to have a few hours of fun with what they told you is "good literature", then DON'T even open the Notes from the Underground. It's undoubtedly one of Dostoevsky's best works, but also one of the darkest and most confusing books ever written (it was Nietzche's favurite). The "hero" of the Notes is an enbittered man, an awful character, who has renounced to all hopes. He has withdrawn from public and social life and lives in his own private "underground", where he hopes the cruel laws of nature and morality will not touch him.He leads a rebellion to logic and common sense,to that "terrible two plus two is four",as he puts it.If you are willing to take a tour of his "underground", it won't be a pleasant experience at all! It's a dark place: no hope, no bright sights, no love, and even no sense. It's a place where the common world ends and where something else, very similar to hell, begins. If you want to visit the underground, be prepared to face the biggest philosophical questions about meaning of life, logic, the truth of common sense. It isn't a tour for anyone. You have to be strong, smart, you must have a sound religious and philosophical background. But if you are prepared to take the tour, you will have one of the most thrilling intelectual experiences ever.
I agree with Lev Shestov, who said that all Dostoevsky's major novels,Crime and Punishment,The Possesed,The Brothers Karamazov, are just a large annotation to the Notes from the Underground, an explanation for a larger audience. Go into the Underground and you will meet Raskolnikov, Stavroghin, the Great Inquisitor, Ivan Karamazov, Mitya Karamazov, Kirillov-they are all there, hidden behind the confusing flux of words that comes from the mouth of the Man from the Underground.

A short book that will take you a long time to read and even longer to understand. A book for corious and intellectually brave readers. A timeless piece of art, that will never stop to shake the ones who dare to take it in their hands without dismissing it as a "stupid little thing".

Don't be put off by the title and subtitle. Initially, I was. In the first chapter, McGee explains his purposes when identifying what he calls "The Seven Signs of a Renaissance." Obviously, the hybrid title fuses "technology" or "tech" with "renaissance" and the subtitle suggests McGee's optimism about the future which awaits his and others' children. This is a remarkably thoughtful and well-written commentary on a wide range of issues which two historical periods share in common, albeit 500 years apart. Specifically, those issues which concern Art, Globalization, the Human Potential Movement, Networks, The Pace of Change, Spiritual Awakening, and what Schumpeter has characterized as "Creative Destruction." Perhaps McGee's optimism is explained, at least in part, because the two historical periods also share several values in common, notably curiosity, passion, tenacity, and courage. They can also be described (and explained) in terms of ferocious competition. "The last Renaissance still stands as one of history's Golden Ages. Nothing in the last 500 years quite compares in terms of progress in the arts, exploration, spirituality, politics, and economics." That's true, at least until now. After years of research and reflection, McGee also concludes that "a renaissance can be a very dangerous thing. They are cataclysmic moments in our history, tearing down as much as they build up. My children and I were caught up in one of history's great social hurricanes. There was as much danger as there was promise in our future."

McGee devotes a separate chapter to each of the seven "signs" and then in the final chapter, invoking the apt metaphor of a Hero's Journey, observes: "We have been collectively cast out of the ordinary world by technology. Whether we liked the old world better or not is irrelevant. The world has changed and we must make some form of peace with it....At the heart of the Hero's Journey is the centuries old belief that heroes make their own destiny. They cannot control the the circumstances which have changed their world, cannot predict what they will meet along the way, cannot even be certain that they will survive the innermost cave. But there is a point in every story -- the climax, to use modern storytelling terminology -- the crisis ordeal, to borrow from [Joseph] Campbell [in his classic study, The Hero with a Thousand Faces], in which the hero is faced with some decision and must choose or perish."

I am reminded of the fact that the Chinese character for the word" crisis" has two meanings: peril; and opportunity. Which shall it be during the Technaissance? Who is equal to the challenge to be heroic? McGee offers several specific suggestions in his final chapter to those who are about to begin or have already begun their own "journey." He reiterates what is by now, obviously, a strong conviction of his own: his hope is that "this book will contribute in a small way to improving the world which my children will someday inherit." Then he suggests, "The only new Renaissance which matters is your own." The Technaissance will proceed with or without us. The choice is ours. McGee is well aware of the perils involved even as he is sincerely optimistic about the possibilities available to all of us to help build "the New World."

                                    Book Description

In 1492, previously separate worlds collided and began to merge, often painfully, into the world-system in which we live today. Columbus's four Atlantic voyages (1492-1504) helped link Africa, Europe, and the Americas in a conflicted economic and cultural symbiosis. These carefully selected documents describe the voyages and their immediate impact on Europe and the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. Symcox and Sullivan's engaging introduction presents Columbus as neither hero nor villain, but as a significant historical actor who improvised responses to a changed world. Document headnotes provide context for understanding Columbus's voyages within the broader context of fifteenth-century Europe and the policies of the Spanish crown. Maps, illustrations, a chronology, questions for consideration, and a selected bibliography invite students to analyze and interpret the documents.

3 out of 5 stars Columbus Day Celebrates Founding of America........2005-10-10

It is said that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. At least that is what all elementary school children were always taught: "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Of course, Columbus never did "discover" North America, and the regions he did explore were already inhabited. Nova investigated the history and authenticity of the Vinland Map, a document believed by some to be the first to depict America, and to date to 1440, half a century before Columbus' famous voyage. There are accounts the Vinland Sagas, 13th-century chronicles that relate Leif Erikson's discovery of Vinland.

He only discovered them from the viewpoint of the Europeans. Yet his first voyage did prove one thing for sure, that the earth was not only round, but that it was bigger than he had thought, Eratosthenes notwithstanding. In Washington state, the 9,000-year-old Kennewick Man was a rare find. Only a handful of skeletons this old had ever been found in North America.

One of the first known celebrations marking the discovery of the "New World" by Christopher Columbus was in 1792, when a ceremony organized by the Colombian Order was held in New York City honoring Columbus and the 300th anniversary of his landing in the Bahamas. The Bahamas, a group of 700 islands, dot the Atlantic Ocean from Florida almost to Haiti. Only 30 of the islands are inhabited. When Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World on San Salvador in 1492, the Arawak Indians were the only inhabitants there.

On October 12, 1866 the Italian population of New York organized the first celebration of the discovery of America. Three years later, in 1869 Italians in San Francisco celebrated October 12 calling it C-Day. How did Christopher Columbus find his way to the "New World"? He used maps, of course. There was just one problem. His maps were wrong!

The year is 1492. In three frail boats, Christopher Columbus heads west across the Atlantic Ocean. Half a world away, on the South China Sea, another ship embarked on a very different kind of journey. In its hold lay the riches of the Far East: intricately embroidered silks and the finest vessels of delicately painted porcelain. These were the treasures that Columbus could only dream of and only China could create.

Between the 13th and the 16th century, China was the greatest industrial power. Not only in Asia, but I would think in the world. The quality of what China was producing during that period was simply staggering to the vast majority of the consumers in the known world at the time.

On August 2, 1492, Columbus set sail in search of the East Indies. The voyage was financed by Ferdinand and Isabella by making the city of Palos pay back a debt to the crown by providing two of the ships, and by getting Italian financial backing for part of the expenses. The crown had to put up very little money from the treasury.

Columbus and 90 crewmen boarded the three ships that were to make the first voyage to the New World, the Niña, Pinta, and the flagship, Santa Maria. On October 12, 1492, Columbus first saw the islands of the new world, landing in the Bahamas. Later in the month, he would sail to Cuba, and to Hispaniola (now Haiti). He thought he had reached the East Indies, the islands off Southeast Asia.

All educated individuals in the 15th century, and especially sailors, already knew that the earth was round. What was not realized by Columbus, however, was just how big a globe it was. Columbus seriously underestimated the size of the planet.

On Christmas Day, 1492, the Santa Maria sank off Haiti. Columbus departed for Spain on January 16, 1493 on the Niña, arriving there on March 4. Columbus made three additional voyages to the New World. The second voyage set sail in September, 1493, with 17 ships. During his expeditions, he helped to colonize Hispaniola, and discovered the South American mainland.

He did not, however, see mainland North America during any of his voyages. He returned to Spain for the last time on November 7, 1504. He died at Valladolid, Spain on May 20, 1506, at the age of 55.

Much controversy exists over Columbus' expeditions and whether or not one can "discover" an already-inhabited land. The natives of the Bahamas and other islands on his journey were peaceful and friendly. Yet many of them were later enslaved by the Spanish. Also, it is known that the Vikings explored the North American coast 500 years before Columbus.

To mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' voyage, in 1892, President Benjamin Harrison made a commemorative proclamation. But it was Colorado, in 1905, that became the first state to observe a Columbus Day. Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually, and in 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. That's where it remained until 1971 when Congress declared it a federal public holiday on the second Monday in October.

4 out of 5 stars Another explanation for how we got alienated.......2006-10-24

Rifkin explains why people feel alienated from nature based on changing perceptions of time over the course of human history. From nature time, to clock time, and now to computer time. Relevant to how people respond (at work, for example) to highly-planned and highly-scheduled work. Good historical explanation of how we got to where we are today, and what the consequences are. Not so good in the last chapter about how to go about fixing it. Predictions about artificial intelligence in computers taking over didn't really come true. But still interesting reading.

For a different, perhaps complementary, view, read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.

I'm not quite sure what I think of Jeremy Rifkin's Time Wars except that I know it makes me think. I just don't know if he's right, but it doesn't really matter.

What Rifkin tells us is that there is a war developing or even already going on, between the advocates of speed and efficiency--almost speed for the sake of speed--and those who prefer, as he puts it, a "more empathetic union with the rhythm of nature." In that latter category he puts many members of the environmental , holistic health, biological agriculture, animal-rights, economic democracy and other movements, who may just think that they're a little bit lefty, not engaged in a struggle for our souls.

Rifkin outlines a history of time, as it were, or more specifically, a history of how people have viewed time. He analyzes different cultures' views of time, which are considerably different, the sense that humans can have power over time, which has not been the belief of all cultures in the past, and the rise to domination of Western views of time (along with pretty much everything else, at least right now).

If you are white and ever been immersed in black or other minority culture, you may hear references to "CP time" or "Indian time". This has often said as a joke but refers to the very different sense of the importance of time and punctuality. It's a smart observation, really, that points out that not everyone is driven by the need to meet a deadline, arrive precisely when expected, operate in a way that those of us in the West feel is the right way. And it's at the heart of what Rifkin is saying about our attempts to capture and define time.

Though the book is written in a very clear style, this is not a book to be read while watching TV or while otherwise distracted. There are Big Thoughts here about who we are as a society and how humans will view their responsibilities, the concept of progress, the Information Age and more, now and in the future.
