In Workfare: Why Good Social Policy Ideas Go Bad, Maeve Quaid delves into the definition and history of workfare, and then continues with a critical and comparative analysis of workfare programs in six jurisdictions: three American (California, Wisconsin, New York) and three Canadian (Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick). Drawing from these case studies, Quaid develops an analytic model that illustrates how workfare falls prey to a series of hazards whereby good social policy ideas fail. Their demise, argues Quaid, begins with politicians with a zest for big ideas but little interest in implementation, continues with short-sighted policy makers, resistant bureaucrats, cynical recipients, flawed evaluations, and is completed by fleeting and fickle public attention for these news stories. Quaid's identification and analysis of these hazards is especially valuable because the hazards can also be applied to innovation in any area of social policy, such as health-care, education, pension plans, child-care, and unemployment insurance.

Carbon nanotubes are exceptionally interesting from a fundamental research point of view. Maybe, but I'm not sure this is it. It comes VERY close though. My complaint (which prevents me from buying my own copy) is that far too many important concepts are mentioned in passing with the reader sent to the literature for the details. For $130, a bit more completeness would be nice. I realize "serious" workers in the field will call me lazy for wanting a $130 book to be as self-contained as possible. So be it...

It's OK........2005-10-03

I have only just started reading this book and I'm haveing alot of trouble finding the houmor in the book. And also I can't really tell what is going on in the story. The plot seems to be choppy and I can't get a mental picture as to what is going on half the time. But I can not bash the book untill I'm done reading it. I hope things start to smooth out the more I read it and get a feel for the style of the book.

Good silly fun.......2004-10-01

This book is over 200 years old and still popular. There's a good reason for that.

It captures all that people love about slapstick, and doesn't worry about toning it down for the kids. The two heros drift from town to town, bordello to bordello, and bar to bar. They're petty grifters, always trying to pull another meager scam, and always getting the worst of it in the end.

There's no real plot here, just a sequence of vignettes. They're all like enough in kind to create a rhythm, but different enough to stay entertaining. Lots of the humor is low - potty humor, not restricted just to human waste. As in some britcoms, our heroes suddenly appear in their underwear time and again - or out of it, or next to it, or looking up into a tree at it. The real fun is in their silly pranks and exaggerations, always found out in ways that make them look like total twits.

Ikku Jippensha's work is still a good read, even today. Sometimes, though, English doesn't capture the flavor of the original. The translator just shouldn't have bothered with some of the puns, and a few turns of phrase probably sounded better back when this was translated. End-notes are scanty, and there appears to be a systematic error in page number references towards the end of the notes.

None of that really interferes with a good read. Enjoy the prat-falls as much as the original readers did, 200 years ago and in Japan.

An outstanding comic novel.......2001-09-10

Students of Japanese literature will find Ikku Jippensha's Shank's Mare to be an outstanding comic novel and essential to a thorough study of Japanese literary history and culture: Thomas Satchell provides the English translation of this story of adventure and discovery. The original was issued serially in 1802: this will appeal to modern readers.

an attempt at some sort of balance.......2006-10-01

I always approach a biography or a volume of history written by a Brit with great caution.

The Brits always whine about "popularizing history," and then write the most dull, godawful books one can imagine. They seem to have a knack for terribly written history. Gibbon died a long time ago, and it has all been downhill ever since.

Added to my worry about the book was the fact that the author worked for the BBC. I cannot think of a greater qualification for disaster, slanted history, and lack of objectivity than working for the BBC. There was a time when it had a serious news department, with serious reporters. But that was long ago. What you get from the BBC today is slanted rubbish, with a strong anti-American and anti-Western bias. Like Reuters, the BBC has become a cruel parody of itself.

So with those two worries in mind, I decided to read the book about the Mahdi and Gordon.

Overall, I got a fairly pleasant surprise. The book is readable. It does not suffer from the British style of history, so you can actually read and enjoy it. A good start.

The author also tries to tell the story of the Mahdi, with a certain degree of objectivity. And the Mahdi's story needs telling. He seems to be the forerunner of what we are facing today--Islamic fanaticism, and a charismatic figure to spur it on. Bin Laden and the Mahdi share many traits--some positive, most not.
One can, with a certain degree of imagination, see the appeal of the two. They both put their money where there mouth is--and both show the power of example. I might not like the example, but you have to give them a certain degree of credit. By giving some credit, you see how they developed a following.

The author seems to have little use for Gordon, and downplays his role in the story as much as possible. He even has a hard time giving Gordon credit for not running, and facing death with the others in Khartoum. I realize its very fashionable-- in these days of Londonistan-- to look for all the good in Islam, while downplaying the West, but Gordon deserves more credit. The man had courage, and the courage of his convictions. He was certainly no more "nutty" than the Mahdi. Gordon was a flawed, but brave figure. He, too, put his life where his mouth was.

This book is worth reading if the story interests you. The story of the Mahdi needs telling. History does repeat itself. Bin Laden and the Mahdi are not the same, to be sure, but there are some stunning simililarites. Both fanatics believe, or believed their faith, and both carried it to remarkable levels. Bin Laden and the Mahdi appeal to the Islamic desire for a leader to make Islam proud, and make the infidels quake.

a comprehensive wonder.......2007-08-12

Perhaps one of the best and most comprehensive book on scientific derivations available. Pretty much any word that you want to find is in the book with detailed explanations. I highly suggest this book for those who like studying languages and every science lab should have a copy available.

The real thing.......2002-06-16

It is somewhat hard to say this of a book of more than forty years old but this would seem to be indeed what it is cracked up to be, an indispensable reference for anybody interested in the composition of scientific words. I would expect that someone would have come up with something better in the time since the appearance of this book (it first appeared in 1927, reaching the present form in 1956). However everytime I have a question on a scientific word this book produces something useful, usually an answer to my question or otherwise some interesting new bit of information.

The only quible I have regards printing quality. The original typography is very ambitious in trying to condense so much information on a page and it suffered a little in this facsimile reprint. Even so printing quality is pretty decent, it is just that it is short of the crispness I would like to see.

THE authority for taxonomers.......1998-12-23

I am not sure how many people will read a review for book which is #174,000+ on Amazons list. It is certainly NOT a bestseller but it is a fantastic book nonetheless. If you are a taxonomer or just wish to know about word origins as used in scientific nomenclature, this book is for you. I must admit, I rarely use my copy but I have it when I do need it. Besides having derivations from Latin and Greek, it has explanations useful for people who may wish to synthesize words for scientific use. At times, it is fun to use this book as a guide and make up scientific words for the most mundane things - try it and see how wonderful something like a flyswatter can sound. Levity aside, this is THE 882 page authority on history of the English language, The nature of Greek and Latin and the formation of scientific terms.

Glaring omission.......2005-12-21

I bought a book club edition of this work several years ago, and was immediately disappointed to find that it did not contain entries for "science" or "scientific." This information could be particularly useful in relation to the current public debate over "intelligent design" versus Darwinian natural selection for use in high school science lessons as explanations for the origin of species. Otherwise a useful little reference no home should be without.

Though contributors are biologists, now useful mostly as a document of intellectual history.......2007-08-06

This book, now quite dated, consists of the proceeds from a conference in those heady post-Communist days of the early 1990s. It consists of US and East European biologists discussing problems of transboundary protected areas in Eastern Europe. The obvious subtext to the conference was a bit of scientific and policy imperialism, to inform post-Communist public land managers of the state of the art in the West.

Judged by this book, that altruistic motive seems pretty well justified. The first part of the book consists of American experts discussing US experience, while the rest consists of East Europeans doing the same for their experience. It's painfully clear from a comparison of the two parts just how far many East European land managers fell behind international standards under Communism. The apparent exception is Polish scientists and land managers, who clearly remained part of the international community. Their chapters tend to be the strongest, comparable in quality to the US chapters. Several chapters provide good information about Bialowieza Primeval Forest on the Polish-Belorussian border, for example.

The rest of the book is painfully descriptive and boring. If you want facts and figures about protected areas in Eastern Europe, this is a good source - - but you can probably find the same information on the Internet now. There isn't much to learn about biology or environmental policy in this book because of the huge gap in quality. However, it might make interesting fodder for anyone studying the intellectual history of environmentalism in Eastern Europe, or the spread of western ideas to the East in the early 1990s.
