Book Description

This introduction will serve as a 'first stop' for those interested in Japan, its role in the Pacific Asian region and, in turn, that region's role in the evolving global system. In this volume, P. W. Preston critically analyses the political economy, social institutions and culture of Pacific Asia. The analysis focuses on Japan , it's relations with the inner periphery of Southeast Asia, and its developing linkages with the reforming socialist countries of China and Indo-ChinaThe critical perspective, awareness of cultural and ethnic trends and a sophisticated grasp of social patterns makes this volume an essential introduction to the region.

      Book Description

The authors of this study emphasize the effectiveness of collectively funded public insurances as opposed to genetic information regulation within the private insurance sector. Genetics has provided tools to determine individuals' risk of future disease, which is of key interest for insurance companies in determining insurance premiums; but persons with high enough risk may remain uninsured. For this reason, genetic information has been regulated. But, regulation may not be the solution, according to the authors, and they call for the resumption of social insurance, a key element of the welfare state.

      Download Description

The result of two key social developments in recent years are examined here: the partial dismantling of the welfare state and the progress of genetics. Genetic insights are becoming increasingly valuable for risk assessment, and insurers would like to use these insights to help determine premiums. Combined with the fact that social welfare is being curtailed, this could potentially create an uninsured high-risk population. Along with considerations of autonomy and privacy, this is the basis for an ethical critique of insurer's access to information. The result has often been regulation of such information; but the authors argues that due to adverse selection, regulation will not solve these problems, and this may jeopardize the survival of private personal insurance. Instead, we should look towards the resurrection of social insurance, a key component of the welfare state. This will interest academic researchers as well as professionals involved with genetics and insurance.

The War On Weeds In The Prairie West: An Environmental History by history buff and weed control expert Clinton L. Evans covers four centuries of the history of pervasive and tenacious Canadian weeds, since their arrival as seeds from England in the sixteenth century. Agricultural battles against these weeds through the centuries are traced in this aptly researched, informative compendium filled with amazing cross-connections in the natural world and human cultivation. The War On Weeds In The Prairie West is a very strongly recommended addition to gadening and agricultural studies supplemental reading lists as well as academic horticultural and ecological history reference collections.

This book has a lot of interesting ideas, but my copy was missing pp 42-43, 46-47 (just blank) and there was wrinkles in the paper on some of the pages like it came out of the press wrong or something. I should have returned it but I was too lazy and I just bought the book on a whim, not anything in it that I desperately needed. Caveat emptor (I'd recommend getting it thru interlibrary loan if you are interested).

                    Description:
This review summarizes independent reports of yield decreases in several agricultural systems that are associated with repeated cropping under wet or submerged soil conditions. Crop and soil data from most of these agroecosystems have led researchers to attribute yield decreases to a reduction in crop uptake of N mineralized from soil organic matter (SOM). These trends are most evident in several long-term field experiments on continuous lowland rice systems in the Philippines, but similar trends are evident in a continuous rice rotation in Arkansas, USA and with no-till cropping systems in North American regions with cool, wet climatic conditions in Spring. Soil analyses from some of these systems have found an accumulation of phenolic lignin compounds in SOM. Phenolic compounds covalently bind nitrogenous compounds into recalcitrant forms in laboratory conditions and occurrence of this chemical immobilization under field conditions would be consistent with field observations of reduced soil N supply. However, technological shortcomings have precluded its demonstration for naturally formed SOM. Through recent advances in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, agronomically significant quantities of lignin-bound N were found in a triple-cropped rice soil in the Philippines. A major research challenge is to demonstrate in the anaerobic agroecosystems that these lignin residues bind sufficient quantities of soil N to cause the observed yield decreases. A key objective will be to elucidate the cycling dynamics of lignin-bound N relative to the seasonal pattern of crop N demand. Anaerobic decomposition of crop residues may be the key feature of anaerobic cropping systems that promotes the accumulation of phenolic lignin residues and hence the covalent binding of soil N. Potential mitigation options include improved timing of applied N fertilizer, which has already been shown to reverse yield decreases in tropical rice, and aerobic decomposition of crop residues, which can be accomplished through field drainage or timing of tillage operations. Future research will evaluate whether aerobic decomposition promotes the formation of phenol-depleted SOM and greater in-season N mineralization, even when the soil is otherwise maintained under flooded conditions during the growing season.

                      Description:
Improved understanding of the interactive relationships of plant material decomposition kinetics to biochemical characteristics and nitrogen availability is required for terrestrial C accounting and sustainable land management. In this study, 15 typical and/or native Australian plant materials were finely ground and incubated with a sandy soil at 25^oC and 55% water holding capacity without nitrogen (-N) or with nitrogen (+N) addition (77mg Nkg^-^1 soil as KNO"3). The C mineralisation dynamics were monitored for 356 days and the initial biochemical characteristics of the plant materials were determined by NMR and wet-chemical analyses. Under the -N treatment, C mineralisation rates of the plant materials were positively correlated with their initial N contents during the first several weeks, and then negatively correlated with lignin and polyphenols contents during the late stages of incubation. Thus the ratios of lignin/N, polyphenols/N and (lignin+polyphenols)/N had more consistent correlation with the cumulative amounts of C mineralised throughout the incubation than did any single component. In terms of the C types determined by NMR analysis, the C mineralisation rates were initially related positively to carbonyl C contents, and then negatively to aryl and O-aryl C contents from day 3 onwards. Addition of NO"3^--N accelerated C mineralisation during the early stages, but resulted in lower cumulative C mineralisation at the end of the incubation for most plant materials. Under the +N treatment, the decomposition rates were correlated with the contents of lignin and the sum of cellulose+acid detergent-extractable non-phenolic compounds, or with aryl, O-aryl and N-alkyl+methoxyl C contents. Regardless of the N treatment, the ratios of aryl/carbonyl, O-aryl/carbonyl and (aryl+O-aryl)/carbonyl C had the closest and most consistent correlations with the cumulative C mineralisation among all biochemical indices examined. A double exponential model with defined mineralisation rate constants for the active and slow pools was used to describe the C mineralisation dynamics. The biological meanings of the kinetically estimated active and slow pool sizes are interpreted and their relationships to the initial chemical/biochemical composition of the plant materials are explored.

                          Book Description

Understanding the properties of snow and how it changes and interacts with the skis will help you appreciate the special phenomena that occur at the triple point, where the solid, liquid, and vapor phases coexist. You'll learn about alpine, cross-country, and speed skiing techniques, wax performance, and you'll get scientific data that is not readily available on the technical specifications and performance of ski equipment. The new edition will include a chapter on biomechanics & physiology of skiing. Other chapters will be revised & brought up to date. The discussion of Alpine skiing will include an extensive discussion of the new "turning" skis.

3 out of 5 stars lots of data; lack of concept; slightly out-of-date.......2003-01-25

I am a firm believer that understanding of the mechanics of a carving ski and of the forces transferred between the skis and the skier as he makes his way down the slope are necessary to better understand why one or another skier's action may help to intiate a turn, or shorten its radius, or, in contrast, will lead to a skidded turn. "The physics of skiing" is the only book I could find which addresses the mechanics and physics of skiing. It starts with the physical properties of snow and its formation in the atmosphere, then discusses the properties of snow equipment (mostly downhill skis, briefly snowboards and cross-country skis), and then goes into dynamics of gliding, wedging, and carving. The book is written as a college textbook with numerous (although fairly simple) equations and diagrams of forces. It requires a sufficiently strong background in physics. Although it contains a large amount of interesting data, I was not quite satisfied with it for two reasons. First, it lacks a concept. It is more a review of different literature sources on skiing-related topics than an analysis combining understanding of physics of skiing with a discussion of how this knowledge is applicable to modern skiing techniques. It provides the readers with the background theory, but does not lead to any suggestions how to benefit from this understanding and improve their skiing technique. Too bad that the authors did not have a good ski instructor in their company to make the book more useful and down-to-earth. Secondly, since it is based on references published between 1977 and 1997, part of the discussion is more applicable to the old almost straight skis than to modern supersidecut skis.

5 out of 5 stars Want to Know about Skiis and Snow? This book will tell you.......2001-09-30

As a ski instructor the subject of how and why these damn things work as well as how to set up your skiis has always been of interest. This book will give you 95% of the answers to those questions. The book covers down hill, cross country as well as a catagory called adventure skiing. I will be ordering extra copies to give to my skiing friends

                            Book Description

On a clear, cold morning in January 1998, in the Selkirk Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, six experienced skiers were buried in a massive avalanche. They didn’t have a chance. A combination of factors — steep, open terrain; an unstable winter snow pack; poor weather conditions; and a trigger provided by a handful of backcountry skiers — made the tragedy, the worst day for avalanche deaths in Canadian history and one of the most tragic in North America, inevitable. This personalized view of an avalanche explores a natural phenomenon that has been, and remains, a force of awesome, unstoppable power. The author also raises questions about risk — and about what might have enticed a group of knowledgeable, experienced skiers to place themselves in the path of an avalanche.

3 out of 5 stars Alice in Wonderland.......2000-09-21

As far apart from the Disney classic as the movie version of Moby Dick is to its literary partner, Alice in Wonderland portrays the fanciful tale of the little girl, Alice, wandering about in a world of her own childhood imaginings and storybook recollections. If you have never actually READ the book, than you have a chance to know what your mother always thought would scare you as a little child, but really just adds to the fantastical wonderland which was the author's intention.
