    Book Description

In Australian economic history, as in the nation's politics and culture, the Great Depression is a dominant theme. In this volume, an international group of economists and economic historians has collaborated to examine the ways in which Australia survived and recovered from economic depression. The Australian experience is set in the wider context of the world economy, and comparisons are made with Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan.

    5 out of 5 stars Well-organized and thorough.......2001-07-16

The book contains more than 3,000 quotations organized into general topics, helpfully listed at the beginning. Within each topic quotes are listed chronologically, with proverbs and sayings at the beginning.

Those looking for specific quotes can try the author or subject indexes at the end. I found the sources complete and accurate. They tell not only who said it, but when, where, case #, etc. This book is a valuable resource.

          Book Description

The two excellent fodder grass species of genus Cenchrus - C.ciliaris (Cc) and C.setigerus (Cs) - are inhabitants of drier sandy areas throughout Africa, the Canary Islands, Madagascar and eastwards to India. In India, they mostly occur in western parts, including the Great Indian Desert. Small patches of the two grass species also occur in semi-arid tracts of southern India. In its area of distribution, the two species exhibit high degrees of morphological and physiological distinctions warranting population differences. Extensive surveys and intensive studies established 25 ecotypes of grass Cc and 9 of grass Cs in western India. The population differences lie in morphological, physiological and cytological aspects. Mathematical approach has confirmed the distinction. Biochemical analysis further supported the population differences. Culture experiments have established high forage yielding ecotypes. Extensive semi-natural grazing lands of the two species occur in the region. Forage yielding capacity varies between 250 and 750 g m 2/y 1. Herbage dynamics, system transfer functions and accumulation and flow rates give a good knowledge of energy flow in the semi-natural grazing lands dominated by the two species. Some of the ecotypes of the two grasses have high nutritive value in terms of total protein and digestability. Seed production, germinability and culture experiments have shown its establishment potentials. Accordingly, cultivation of some of the ecotypes of the two grass species in India, Australia, USA and Africa have given encouraging results.

              Description:
Whether land management planning provides for sufficient habitat to sustain viable populations of indigenous wildlife is one of the greatest challenges confronting resource managers. Analyses of the effects of land management on natural resources often rely on qualitative assessments that focus on single species to reflect the risk of wildlife extinction across a planning area. We propose a conceptual framework for sustainable management of wildlife habitat that explicitly acknowledges the greater risk of an extinction event when considering the viability of multiple species, e.g., an indigenous vertebrate fauna. This concept is based on the principle that the likelihood of at least one event (i.e., species extinction) is the joint probability of the extinction probabilities of individual species, assuming independence among species' responses to disturbance. We present an ecological rationale to support the view that, at a spatial scale of 10^4-10^6ha (i.e., planning area) and a temporal scale of 10^2 years (i.e., planning horizon), wildlife species operating at varying ecological scales respond relatively independently to disturbances typically associated with land management. We use a hypothetical scenario of a wildlife viability assessment and Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate that the probability of 'any extinction' is consistently higher than the probability of the 'single most likely' extinction, and that the difference between these values increases as more disturbance-sensitive species (i.e., species at risk) are analyzed. We conclude that risk assessments that rely upon the most sensitive single species may substantially underestimate the risk of wildlife extinction across a planning area. Furthermore, the selection of a planning alternative based on relative threat of local extinction of wildlife populations can vary depending on which paradigm is used to estimate risk to viability across the planning area.

                Book Description

When bombarded with X-rays, solid materials produce distinct scattering patterns similar to fingerprints. X-ray powder diffraction is a technique used to fingerprint solid samples, which are then identified and cataloged for future use-much the way the FBI keeps fingerprints on file. The current database of some 70,000 material prints has been put to a broad range of uses, from the analysis of moon rocks to testing drugs for purity.

Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry fully updates the achievements in the field over the past fifteen years and provides a much-needed explanation of the state-of-the-art techniques involved in characterizing materials. It covers the latest instruments and methods, with an emphasis on the fundamentals of the diffractometer, its components, alignment, calibration, and automation.

The first three chapters outline diffraction theory in clear language, accessible to both students and professionals in chemistry, physics, geology, and materials science. The book's middle chapters describe the instrumentation and procedures used in X-ray diffraction, including X-ray sources, X-ray detection, and production of monochromatic radiation. The chapter devoted to instrument design and calibration is followed by an examination of specimen preparation methods, data collection, and reduction. The final two chapters provide in-depth discussions of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

While the material is presented in an orderly progression, beginning with basic concepts and moving on to more complex material, each chapter stands on its own and can be studied independently or used as a professional reference. More than 230 illustrations and tables demonstrate techniques and clarify complex material.

Self-contained, timely, and user-friendly, Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry is an enormously useful text and professional reference for analytical chemists, physicists, geologists and materials scientists, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and analytical chemistry.

X-ray powder diffraction-a technique that has matured significantly in recent years-is used to identify solid samples and determine their composition by analyzing the so-called "fingerprints" they generate when X-rayed. This unique volume fulfills two major roles: it is the first textbook devoted solely to X-ray powder diffractometry, and the first up-to-date treatment of the subject in 20 years.

                This timely, authoritative volume features:
                * Clear, concise descriptions of both theory and practice-including fundamentals of diffraction theory and all aspects of the diffractometer
                * A treatment that reflects current trends toward automation, covering the newest instrumentation and automation techniques
                * Coverage of all the most common applications, with special emphasis on qualitative and quantitative analysis
                * An accessible presentation appropriate for both students and professionals
                * More than 230 tables and illustrations

Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry, a collaboration between two internationally known and respected experts in the field, provides invaluable guidance to anyone using X-ray powder diffractometers and diffractometry in materials science, ceramics, the pharmaceutical industry, and elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for theory and application........2000-10-28

This book provides an introduction to powder diffraction theory as well as a comprehensive list of everything involved with the actual diffractometer. This is not just a theory book nor a technical manual. It describes clearly all the factors involved in the production of x-rays, the workings of motors and detectors to the reasons for using divergence slits as well as the principles of phase identification and quantitative analysis. It is a great book for someone who will be using a diffractometer for the first time and will be doing the work themselves. This is not a crystallography text. It is more a handbook of practical applied powder diffraction. Well worth the money.

A textbook for the senior undergraduate or graduate student beginning a serious study of X-ray crystallography. It will be of interest both to those intending to become professional crystallographers and to those physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, metallurgists and others who will use it as a tool in their research. All major aspects of crystallography are covered--the geometry of crystals and their symmetry, theoretical and practical aspects of diffracting X-rays by crystals and how the data may be analyzed to find the symmetry of the crystal and its structure. Includes recent advances such as the synchrotron as a source of X-rays, methods of solving structures from power data and the full range of techniques for solving structures from single-crystal data. Computer programs are provided for carrying out many operations of data-processing and solving crystal structures including by direct methods. These programs are required for many of the examples given at the end of each chapter but can be used to create new examples by which students can test themselves or each other.

                    Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: CHEMICAL CBYSTALLOGRAPHY AN. INTRODUCTION TO OPTICAL AND X-RAY METHODS BY C. W. BUNN OXFORD AT THE CLARENDON PRESS Oxford University Press, Amen House, London E. G. 4 GLASGOW NEW YORK TORONTO MELBOURNE WELLINGTON BOMBAY CALCUTTA MADRAS CAPETOWN Geoffrey Cumberlege, Publisher to the University FIRST PUBLISHED 1045 REPRINTED WITH CORRECTIONS 1946 Reprinted lithographically in Great Britain at the UNIVERSITY PRESS, OXFORD, 1948, 1949, 1952, from corrected sheets of the second impression PREFACE CEYSTALLOGRAPHIC methods are used in chemistry for two main pur poses the identification of solid substances, and the determination of atomic configurations ; there are also other applications, most of which, as far as technique is concerned, may* be said to lie between the two main subjects. This baok is intended to be a guide to these methods. I have tried to explain the elementary principles involved, and to give as much practical information as will enable the reader to start using the methods described. I have not attempted to give a rigorous treat ment of the physical principles: the f approach is consistently from the chemist's point of view, and physical theory is included only in so far as it is necessary for the general comprehension of the principles and methods described. Nor have I attempted to give an exhaustive account of any subject ; the aim throughout has been to lay the founda tions, and to give sufficient references ( either to larger works or to original papers) to enable the reader to follow up any subject in greater detail if he so desires. The treatment of certain subjects is perhaps somewhat unorthodox. Crystal morphology, for instance, is described in terms of the concept of the unit cell ( rather than in terms of the axial ratios of the earlier morphologists), and is approached by way of the phenomena of crystal growth. The optical properties of crystals are described solely in terms of the phenomena observed in the polarizing microscope. X-ray diffrac tion is considered first in connexion with powder photographs; it is moj* e usual to start with the interpretation of the diffraction effects of single crystals. These methods of treatment are dictated by the form and scope of the book ; they also reflect the course of the writer's own experience in applying crystallographic methods to chemical problems. It is therefore hoped that they may at any rate seem natural to those to whom the book is addressed - students of chemistry who wish to acquire some knowledge of crystallographic methods, and research workers who wish to make practical use of such methods. If the book should come to the notice of a more philosophical reader, I can only hope that any qualms such a reader may feel about its avoidance of formal physical or mathematical treatment may be somewhat offset by the interest of a novel, if rather severely practical, viewpoint. The difficulties of three-dimensional thinking have, I hope, been lightened as much as possible by the provision of a large number of vi PREFACE diagrams ; but crystallography is emphatically not a subject which can be learnt solely from books: solid models should be used freely models of crystal shapes, of atomic . nd molecular configurations, of reciprocal lattices and of vectorial representations of optical and other physical properties. Most of the diagrams are original, but a few have been reproduced, by permission, from published books and journals: Figs. 197, 207-9, 215, and 222 from the Journal of the Chemical Society ; Figs. 199, 203, and 217 from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, Figs. 102-4 from the Journal of Scientific Instruments ; Fig. 229 from the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Fig. 161 from Inter nationale Tabetten ftir Bestimmung von Kristallstrukturen ( Berlin: Born traeger); Fig. 192 from the * Strnkturbericht ' of the Zeitschrift fttr Kristallographie\ and Figs. 212 and 216 from Bragg's The Crystalline State

                                    Book Description

Somewhere between tales and polemics, these funny, ribald, and inventive pieces show Voltaire doing what he does best: brilliantly challenging received wisdom, religious intolerance, and naïve optimism. Traveling through strange environments, Voltaire's protagonists are educated, often by surprise, into the complexities and contradictions of their world. Arriving on Earth from the star Sirius, the gigantic explorer Micromégas discovers a diminutive people with an inflated idea of their own importance in the universe. Babouc in "The World as It Is" learns that humanity is equally capable of barbarism and remarkable altruism. Other characters include a little-known god of infidelity, a pretentious graduate who invites a savage to dinner, and an Indian fakir who puts up with a bed of nails to gain the adoration of his female disciples. These "fables of reason" challenge the assumptions of reader and protagonist alike.
