As the second most industrially developed economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, World Bank officials argued that Zimbabwe could be the first African country to succeed with economic liberalization. However, the experience of structural adjustment was disastrous, as it led to widespread deindustrialization. In contrast to predictions, a World Bank/International Monetary Fund program led to the collapse of industries it was meant to promote: textiles, clothing, and footwear. This book examines the reasons behind this seeming paradox through an in-depth case study of the experience of textiles, clothing, and footwear sub-sectors in Zimbabwe under structural adjustment. Economic liberalization failed because it did not relate to the local economic context. This failure led to autonomous development of the trade and financial sectors, to the detriment of production. The economic crisis that resulted is a critical factor behind recent political instability and the current crisis of governance in Zi Economic liberalization failed because it did not relate to the local economic context. Description:
The extraction behavior of various nucleobases was investigated with a series of calixarene derivatives. A calix[6]arene acetic acid was found to extract around 80% of adenine from an aqueous phase, and showed the highest specificity for adenine among all the nucleobases tested. The important factors influencing the recognition properties of calixarene were discovered to be its cyclic structure, its cavity size, and the functional carboxylic acid groups. The carbonyl group and the position of the amino group in the guest molecules also affect the extraction efficiency. Calix[6]arene forms a stable 1:1 complex with adenine by entrapping it into the cavity. Adenine was readily recovered from the organic phase by contacting with a fresh acidic solution.

A calix[6]arene carboxylic acid derivative was utilized as an extractant for various amino compounds including amino acids. The host compound exhibited a high extractability compared to that of commercially available extractants such as di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The important factors for amino acid extraction were found to be its cyclic structure and its cavity size, the functional carboxylic groups, and the length of the alkyl chains. The hydrophobicity and the ionic property of guest molecules also affect the extraction efficiency. Calix[6]arene forms a stable complex with a guest molecule by entrapping it into the cavity. The molecular geometries of calixarene before and after extraction were also discussed using computational calculations with the PM3 type of semi-empirical method.

Excellent supplment to Brown and Churchill.......2006-08-14

I used this book for two Graduate semesters of Complex Analysis. The course text was Brown and Churchill which I often found lacking in detail. This book might not be consider by some as a Graduate level text however I found it to be an excellent supplemental text to fill in the gaps and improve my understanding of the material.

hey I know why this book is out of print!.......2004-05-01

This book doesn't have very many examples and is excessively terse. It doesn't have many routine problems either; they're either hard or very hard, and no hints are included for any of them. I didn't think this book was very helpful at all. I used Jerrold Marsden's book as a reference & it was more helpful. The complex variables book by Brown/Churchill doesn't cover any of the topological concepts, but it's a good reference also.

No need or audience for this one........2006-08-25

I would not consider assigning or recommending this title to my students who are going to read Iliad IX in Greek. The late Malcolm Willcock's commentary on Books I-XII (ISBN 185399507X) costs only three dollars more, is certainly the equal of this one in critical acumen and literary appreciation, and is more helpful on the Greek. (And of course, it also covers books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12.) Griffin is aware of Willcock's work, which he rightly describes as "unpretentious and helpful" (p. 47). He has not produced new material that will require students or scholars to notice his little book.
