Book Description

This work focuses on the economic challenges the American economy has met during the post-World War II era, and on the new challenges--represented notably by the competing economies of Japan, Germany, and the entire European union--that confront it as the twenty-first century approaches. The book shows how the transformations brought about by international competition fit the long-term processes of economic growth and change with respect to structural mutations, technological development, the role of the government, and the evolution of government-business relations. Nicholas Spulber presents a detailed critique of the thesis alleging that the American economy had experienced some kind of decline, and argues that the economy will continue to move forward energetically and successfully if growth and change are primarily left to emerge from the impulses and incentives of the private economy.

3 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title. Nothing Special Here........2001-02-21

Throughout the book, there is a careful discussion of planned economy versus free market guided economy. It carefully frames the discussion as follows. A partially planned economy may be a good idea say some writers. He shows that if the largely planned economies have consistently failed, how can some one argue that a little bit of planning will be successful. He shows how well known liberal economists that think a little bit of government planning will be good are really lazy thinkers. He refers to the powerful accuracy of the market place in preparing the economy for the future and discusses the place for government regulation. One day someone will write a book explaining how poorly boards of directors and top management forecast the future for planning purposes. But given the greater knowledge on the micro pieces of the economy by corporate officials and investors, their chances of foretelling the future is far greater than government officials. The market place works in amazing ways. He rejects the desire of some economists to see decline as the future of the American economy if governmental planning does not address the bogeyman created in the minds of the liberal views he discusses. He holds fast to the expectation that the impulses and incentives of the private economy assure long term growth. The federal government has a role in monetary policy, fiscal sensitivity to the business cycle and environmental regulation. Partnerships between governmental officials and industry have a record of doing more harm than good.

For the first 200 pages, the book does provide a sleepy review of the American Economy in comparison to Japan, German and Europe for the period of 1947 to 1989. Big picture comparative data does not provide much insight. In a review of the economy since WWII, there is an attempt at comparing the economy under all the presidential administrations. It leaves out what is happening in congress and at the Federal Reserve. An economist should know better than to ascribe excessive economic powers to the respective presidents. The process is drawn out to show Democratic bias for government directed planning for the economy and the Republican commitment to market directed forces. He takes the Clinton administration to task for its heavy handed bias for government planning.

The first printing of the book is 1995 and yet the data in the book stops at 1990. Did the author die or vegetate. What ever the reason potential buyers should have been warned of its dated status at first printing.

The book's subtitle "The Struggle for Supremacy in the 21st Century" appears to be a belated addendum to help sell a book with a very shallow purpose. The chapter on Government-Business Relationship is lifeless particularly in its treatment of research and development and technology. The author is oblivious to the applied technology engine that is drive economic progress in many areas-- thanks to the venture capital community. He reveals a bias that university originated research is what really counts. In the long-run it is the vital raw material, but the venture capital applications that draw on any country (even the former Soviet Union science) are what is so uniquely American.

The book is not well written. It has ponderous sentence and paragraph construction. On many subjects a laundry list of topics are brought up but not dealt with in any depth. There is very little in the book about the struggle for supremacy in the past, current or about the future struggle. There is a message that the American economy keeps on winning due to its free market driven status, but there is little stimulating thought about the future of much of anything.

As a student, the NY Practice (Hornbook) is an easy reference guide in my current studies. I would recommend this book to all students.

5 out of 5 stars Vital for New York Practice.......1999-04-07

David Siegel's New York Practice is considered the bible for legal practitioners in the Empire State. The book follows the CPLR generally, pulls in appropriate court-made rules and references important procedural provisions of the Court Acts. It is written in a practical and conversational style infrequently encountered in legal writing. The authoritativeness of the book, despite its readability, is reflected in the numerous cites to the text in the opinions of the courts of New York, and beyond. As a law clerk, I refer to the book often.

1 out of 5 stars Cliched and Poorly Written.......2005-12-23

This is a horribly cliched and trite book.

Liberal activist do-good trial lawyers save the world. Mentally retarded living in their own feces, chained to the walls. Hell on earth!

Who comes in on the white horse to save the day? Why the class-action liberal trial lawyer of course!

Yeah for the liberal trial lawyers. Yeah for the crusading journalist who exposed this horror. Boo for the mean evil bureaucrats! Boo for the currupt and inept politicans!

This is an endless stories told by many liberals 60's do-gooders themselves. Ahhh, if only the world was like it was back then. If only the courts were so friendly to righting the wrongs as they were then. If only Bush wasn't in office.... Wait, I digress.

And the Rothmans are liberal do-gooders. David sits on the board of George Soros's foundation (does it get any more liberal and biased these days?!?) and once was on the Board of the ACLU. Sheila is one of the travel-loving Human Rights type (human rights activist just another phrase for someone who loves to travel to exotic places and get other people to pick up the tab). She works on projecs with phrases like the "Socially Disadvanted" and worries about "the poor" from her Ivory Tower perch at Columbia.

Look, this is a badly written, highly cliched, highly biased book.

If you want to read something good on a topic like this, at least spend your money on something well writeen:

                    Book Description

The proper planning, design and management of land use demands a careful balancing of many goals, and the search for desirable land uses, coupled with effective and sustainable management practices, is made more complex by the interactions between the environment, the economy and society. One of the main reasons underlying the growing interest in multicriteria analysis for land use management is the need for an integrated approach to such complex problems. Multicriteria analysis can support the structuring of land use problems, allowing the concerns of major actors to be explored, giving trade-offs between conflicting goals, and leading to the evaluation of options from different perspectives. The integration of spatial concepts into multicriteria schemes means that this type of methodology can now make a substantial contribution to land-use management. The 19 contributions to Multicriteria Analysis for Land-Use Management illustrate the state of the art in the field, highlighting current theoretical, methodological and practical issues. Recommended for a broad readership of scientists, land-use managers and decision makers.

                      Description:
The development of a third world country requires a conscious balance between different planning and policy issues, such as population growth rate, gross national income, self-reliance and long-term sustainable ecological development. This paper reports on a cross-disciplinary project to design a decision support system (DSS) that aims to assist government policy makers in planning the regional agricultural development of the Bungoma region in Kenya. The DSS is based on the agro-ecological zones (AEZ) model, a previously developed non-interactive optimization model that provides an agro-ecological and economic assessment of various types of land uses, including cash-crops, food production, grazing, forestation and farming. This work extends the decision analytic scope of the AEZ model to explicitly incorporate a multicriteria optimization formulation that facilitates a direct trade-off analysis between the various decision criteria within a user-interactive decision support modeling framework. The DSS uses in-depth information about the Bungoma region, extracted from a large-scale FAO database on Kenya that includes information on various climatic and soil characteristics (e.g., thermal and moisture regime, soil type, slope class) and socio-economic data (e.g., projected growth rate and product demand patterns) for 90000 agro-ecological cells. At each stage of the analysis, our system offers the decision maker several alternative planning strategies with different suggested land uses for over 100 different types of crops, fuel wood and livestock land utilization types for evaluation, allowing the decision maker to take into account trade-offs between a number of planning and policy criteria, including food output, net revenue, gross value of output, self-sufficiency, production costs, arable land use and degree of erosion. Furthermore, the DSS facilitates a direct assessment of the stability of each solution with respect to the food output and erosion in any particular cell and for any given climatic scenario. Description:
This paper evaluates the desirability of three planning scenarios concerning the reorganization of public services and infrastructure for outdoor recreation in the coastal zone of the town of Arbus (Sardinia, Italy) using both the contingent valuation (CV) method and multicriteria analysis (MCA). The most relevant methodological point of this paper is to demonstrate how the results of the CV procedure can be used in the MCA procedure to improve the accuracy and objectivity of the MCA results.

                                          Book Description

`His figure was striking, but not so from grace ... and as he stalked along, wrapt in the black garments of his order, there was something terrible in its air; something almost super-human.' First published in 1797, The Italian is one of the finest examples of Gothic romance. The fast-paced, narrative centres on Ann Radcliffe's most brilliant creation, the sinister monk Schedoni, whose past is shrouded in mystery. From the novel's opening chapters the reader is ushered into a shadowy world in which crime and religion are mingled. In the church of Santa Maria del Pianto in Naples, Ellena Rosalba and Vincentio di Vivaldi first meet; but their love is ill-omened. Leagued against them are the proud and ambitious Marchese di Vivaldi and her confessor Father Schedoni. When Ellena vanishes on the death of her guardian, Vivaldi sets out in pursuit of her across the mountainous regions of southern Italy before himself falling prey to the Holy Inquisition. This revised and expanded edition explores the novel in the context of British attitudes to Italy and Roman Catholicism in the late eighteenth century with close attention to the novel's style and form.

Vincentio di Vivaldi was the only son of the Marchese di Vivaldi, a nobleman of one of the most ancient families of the kingdom of Naples, a favourite possessing an uncommon share of influence at Court, and a man still higher in power than in rank. His pride of birth was equal to either, but it was mingled with the justifiable pride of a principled mind; it governed his conduct in morals as well as in the jealousy of ceremonial distinctions, and elevated his practice as well as his claims. His pride was at once his vice and his virtue, his safeguard and his weakness.

5 out of 5 stars So Many Turns of Events!.......2002-08-06

The Italian was Radcliffe's last novel. It is about a nobleman who falls in love with a woman whose identity is unknown to herself and the reader throughout her sufferings. She is oppressed by many people in whose hands she falls as she is snatched away from the nobleman Vivaldi to prevent their marriage. Like all of Radcliffe's heroines, her character is marked by an amazing fortitude despite the horrifying things to which she is frequently subjected. Vivaldi faces the powers of the Inquisition and Radcliffe gives the reader some idea of their dealings with offenders and their ways of making prisoners "confess." There are many turns of events which are delightful until another perilous event disappoints and grieves the reader. This is certainly what most reviewers call a page-turner. The sentiments are by no means modern. For a reader who is looking for modern unrestrained "romance," none of Radcliffe's novels is a good choice. Her stories are for true romantics.

                                          2 out of 5 stars A Difficult Read.......2001-08-02

I found "The Italian" to be less satisfying, more lurid, more obscure, and harder going than "Romance of the Forest." The plot moves slowly and the punctuation of this edition was a definite impediment for me. The decadent qualities, atmosphere of depravity, and character style were intentional, I realize, but I found this book to be mired in its genre, cardboard in character development, and unrewarding. I enjoyed the similar "Uncle Silas" far more.

4 out of 5 stars Gothic Romance at its Best.......2000-07-14

Let it first be said that Lewis's "The Monk" is heavily influenced by Radcliffe. Reading "The Monk" first would throw the reader off the track. This novel is an excellent selection from the genre of Gothic novel, and is indeed a masterpiece. The Gothic novel had a great impact on Romanticism, and on the literature of the absurd. Overall, an enjoyable read!

3 out of 5 stars The "Queen of the Gothic Novel".......1998-10-26

This is one of Radcliffe's two best novels, the other being "The Mysteries of Udolpho". A little excursion into literary history will clear up the confusion of the reviewer who feels that Radcliffe copied Lewis' "The Monk". If any copying was done, it was the other way around. At the time Lewis began writing, Radcliffe was the top Gothic novelist, and one of the most popular authors of any genre. Lewis, himself, stated that he was inspired to write "The Monk" after reading "Udolpho". (In fact, Radcliffe's mastery of the gothic influenced such poets as Byron and Keats, who called her "mother Radcliffe" for her legacy, and many other writers of her day and far beyond.) Among her major influences were Shakespeare, Milton, and Walpole, who basically founded the gothic novel. But Radcliffe took it to a new and higher level than Walpole, and Lewis took off from Radcliffe's new elevation, and went in another, though not necessarily higher, direction. Having read both "The Italian" and "The Monk" (my copies rest amiably next to one another on the shelf), I would say they are BOTH very much worth reading (as is "Udolpho"). Reading "Udolpho" first, and then "The Monk", will demonstrate how much Lewis drew his inspiration from the master. Reading "The Italian" will show that master at once at the peak and, unfortunately, the close of her literary career.
