    Book Description

In the late 1990s, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia experienced a series of major financial crises evinced by widespread bank insolvencies and currency depreciations, as well as sharp declines in gross domestic production. This sudden disruption of the Asian economic `miracle' astounded many observers around the world, raised questions about the stability of the international financial system and caused widespread fear that this financial crisis would spread to other countries. What has been called the Asian crisis followed a prolonged slump in Japan dating from the early 1980s and came after the Mexican currency crisis in the mid-1990s. Thus, the Asian crisis became a major policy concern at the International Monetary Fund as well as among developed countries whose cooperation in dealing with such financial crises is necessary to maintain the stability and efficiency of global financial markets. This book collects the papers and discussions delivered at an October 1998 Conference co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the International Monetary Fund to examine the causes, implications and possible solutions to the crises. The conference participants included a broad range of academic, industry, and regulatory experts representing more than thirty countries. Topics discussed included the origin of the individual crises; early warning indicators; the role played by the global financial sector in this crisis; how, given an international safety net, potential risks of moral hazard might contribute to further crises; the lessons for the international financial system to be drawn from the Asian crisis; and what the role of the International Monetary Fund might be in future rescue operations. Because the discussions of these topics include a wide diversity of critical views and opinions, the book offers a particularly rich presentation of current and evolving thinking on the causes and preventions of international banking and monetary crises. The book promises to be one of the timeliest as well as one of the most complete treatments of the Asian financial crisis and its implications for future policymaking.

          Book Description

This two-volume book presents an up-to-date account of armored scale insects (Homoptera: Diaspididas), a family of highly specialized insects, many of which are important agricultural pests. Being sedentary, colonial and rather cryptic, many species have invaded new countries with important host plants. This has made them prime targets for biological control by natural enemies.

No other book has attempted to present such a rounded picture of this important group. It covers all aspects: morphology, systematics, phylogeny, biology, ecology, natural enemies (pathogens, predators, parasites), pest status, control measures (quarantine, eradication, monitoring, chemical control, biological control, mechanical control, integrated control), as well as pest problems and control on specific crops, from a worldwide perspective.

The armored scale insects: their morphology, systematics and phylogeny; reproductive biology and genetics; development biology and physiology; ecology; and techiques for their study is handled in Volume A.

The natural enemies of armored scale insects, and with their damage and control: pathogens; predators; parasites; hyperparasites; ecology and efficacy of natural enemies; techniques; economic importance; quarantine; eradication; forecasting and monitoring infestations; chemical control; biological control; mechanical control; integrated pest management; pest problems and control in specific crops is dealt with in Volume B.

The book is intended for a broad audience: professional entomologists, extension specialists, pest control operators and advanced horticulturists and agriculturists, as well as biologists, naturalists and environmentalists (the latter should find the strong emphasis on natural enemies and biological control of interest).

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of the GRE Physics Test.......2004-12-31

I used this book to prepare for a test in early 2002 and was surprised at the amount of similar questions posed on the actual exam. It's true that ETS recycles many of the test questions each year and the Physics test is no exception. If you are looking strictly for more in-depth test taking strategies then you should consider another book, as for practicing on actual test questions this book wins hands-down.

5 out of 5 stars A book you want to see before the test........2003-02-16

This book neither tells you how to solve the problems nor what knowledge you are expected to have before the test. This book contains only problems and answers. When you think you are ready for the test, this is the book you want to use. This book contains four actual tests and helps you time your exam and get used to the style of the exam. I found "Physics: The Easy Way by Robert L. Lehrman" a good book to review the kind of things asked in GRE physics test. In GRE physics test you are asked a hundred small questions which can be solved almost without calculation. You want to review the essentials and get used to the style of the exam for high score.

4 out of 5 stars Just the tests.......2000-08-22

Sadly, this publication by ETS contains nothing but 3 old GRE physics exams of (presumably) retired questions. The correct answers and the scoring statistics are given, but there is nothing in the way of explanation or discussion or strategies for attacking the test. Still, you should probably get this because its the only place you can get your hands on ETS's actual problems. Other books that purport to train you for the GRE often disturbingly misunderstand what kind of things ETS expects you to know and do on the exam. This book is only helpful if you invest a lot of time in it, but I still reccommend it highly if you plan on taking the physics GRE.

4 out of 5 stars comprehensive and practical.......2000-04-20

with detailed explaination and cogent coaching, this book provides a hand-on way to tackle GRE questions

                  Book Description

Canada has a rich and interesting military intelligence history, one that continues to grow at a rapidly expanding rate. Intelligence is a key element of operations, enabling commanders to successfully plan and conduct operations. It enables them to win decisive battles and it helps them to identify and attack high value targets. In order to ensure the Commanders have the required support they need to plan and conduct operations, members of CanadaÂ's Military Intelligence Branch are serving in an increasingly dangerous number of hotspots around the world. In recent years they have served in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Haiti, Somalia, Rwanda, East Timor, and Afghanistan just to name a few. While Intelligence personnel have played a major role to play in ensuring the successful completion of these interdiction missions, many of their stories remain classified. This “history” cannot truly be complete until the official secrets act permits a clearer picture to be told. Out of Darkness—Light, Volume 2, should, however, give the interested reader at least a partial view of some of the service that has been carried out on CanadaÂ's behalf by the CF Intelligence Branch for the years 1983 to 1997.

                    Book Description

Humans are builders--we make structures to span rivers, to connect points of land, to offer shelter. Indeed, throughout history, civilizations have created structures of such immense scale, requiring such tremendous resources, that they might have been thought impossible. From the Taj Mahal to the Suez Canal, from Solomon's Temple to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, these feats of macro-engineering are a testament to the creativity and foresight of engineers, architects, government officials, and diplomats. Who came up with the ideas for these projects? How did they see them through to completion? What obstacles--diplomatic, legal, logistical, and engineering--had to be overcome for these structures to be built? What impact did these engineering projects have on the economies and cultures of their societies? This encyclopedia answers all these questions, showing how central these great engineering projects are to the history of civilization. It includes the legal documents that launched them. Building the World comprises detailed entries on over forty of the most important engineering projects in world history, such as:
                  • Washington D.C.: A "master-planned" city created to house the government of the new country of the United States
                  • Eiffel Tower: The construction of this now-iconic feature of Paris was protested by such leading French figures as writers Emile Zola and Alexandre Dumas
                  • The Channel Tunnel: While the actual tunnel was not completed until 1993, the idea of a tunnel under the English Channel was considered as early as 1802 by Napoleon. The rich illustration program includes 66 photographs and 30 illustrations, maps, and drawings that document the most important structures ever built. Each entry includes a detailed history of the planning and construction of the project, and a discussion of its subsequent importance. A unique feature of the encyclopedia is an extensive primary source collection that illustrates how the decision to create such a structure came to be, demonstrating the importance of individuals in imagining, planning, and building some of the most famous engineering landmarks in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Scary and full of informations.......2005-05-15

A relation between a disease know for its unknown causes and a new "designer" drug made to bypass the actual laws, drug that actually caused the addicts to get the Parkinson's disease, then the overwhelmed reaction to the medical research community that could make a disaster by spreading the disease amongst researchers unaware of precautions to take manipulating the chemicals that caused the six drug addicts to be sick. This book is great from the begining to the end, as entertaining as the best fiction book even though it is a very factual book. I do not have a strong medical background, but I clearly understood this book and enjoyed reading it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Compelling Reading.......2000-06-04

When I bought this book I didn't know what to expect - I thought it would be similar in style to Oliver Sacks' "Awakenings" (i.e. a series of case histories). While I enjoyed Awakenings I would have to say that this book is much better - it truly reads like an un-put-downable thriller. The plot has all the ingredients for a great story - whatever we might think of heroin addiction and the criminal backgrounds of many of the frozen addicts, we can only feel sympathy for their terrible fate; Langston is a perspicacious but poorly funded neurologist who must fight the prejudices of the medical establishment (and ultimately the government and President) in order to develop an exciting but controversial new treatment that will give the addicts the only hope of release from their living hell. It's great stuff, made all the better of course because its based on truth. The book is also hugely informative and gives a sobering insight into the suffering endured by victims of Parkinsons and other neurodegenerative diseases; as well as offering hope in the form of future treatments. It is also superbly written. What more can I say?

5 out of 5 stars A must read if somebody in the family has this illness.......1998-11-14

We are passing the book around the family now. The farther has PD. It has been great for us to gain an understanding of this mysterious illness.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating presentation of the beginning of PD research.......1997-01-25

A must for all Parkinson's Disease interested persons. A spellbinding tale depicting the beginning of modern science research into the causes of PD brought about by a very unlikely source. Hard to set aside once started. E. Jack Savely
