The Business of Japanese Foreign Aid: Five Case Studies from Asia (European Institute of Japanese Studies East Asian Economics and Business Studies Series)

Japan is now the biggest donor of Official Development Assistance (ODA), distributing one fifth of all world-wide foreign aid. Concentrating heavily on infrastructure projects in Asia, Japanese ODAs have predominantly taken the form of concession loans, raising many questions about the aims and motives of the Japanese foreign aid program.

Marie Söderberg brings together five case studies focusing on the procedures, methodologies and business mechanisms at the implementation level of ODAs, suggesting that there are many more factors influencing the process than might have been anticipated. Examining countries such as China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, these studies explore the process of receiving aid, arguing that many of the recipient countries exert considerable influence over the distribution of Japanese foreign aid.

Professor Miller does an excellent job introducing all the topics covered in a first year civil procedure class. He is a good speaker and I found him somewhat entertaining at times. He is able to break down a topic into its essentials and allows you to understand what the whole point is about. I agree with the other reviewers that he does not go into a great detail into each subject - but how can one really cover a full course in depth on 10 cds?. However, these CD's will allow you a great springboard into fully understanding what your standard text is saying. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that the tapes are a bit outdated with only a 1999 update available (at least on the ones I bought for my 2006-2007course ).

Comprehensive, with some drawbacks.......2007-05-23

Mr. Miller speaks very clearly but too slowly sometimes. He's a little obtuse at times-- doesn't define some concepts very well, pontificating about a subject using terms and phrases that, in my opinion, he shouldn't presume the listener knows. The sound quality of the recordings is poor, but acceptable. Not as much "fun" as the S&S Torts recordings by Finz. A little bit dated-- (about 8 years old?). Overall good.

Perfect for Commuters.......2006-09-26

The two hour plus commute I endure every day to get to school has forced me to get ultra-creative in my study methods. Sum and Substance CDs in general have been a godsend. The Civil Procedure set in particular is easy to understand, meticulous,entertaining enough to keep one's interest, and follows right along with the classic two semester first year civil procedure class. Now instead of fuming silently over wasted time, I can anchor my knowledge while I ride.

A must have for any First Year Civil Procedure Student.......2006-05-17

Don't make the mistake I made and wait until second semester to buy these Arthur Miller cds. Spend the money up front and between these cds (and the Glannon books) you will be set and you'll find it was well worth it right from the get go. The cds got me through all the tough topics and made Civ Pro one of my favorite subjects. Miller trudges through all the big items in an easy, sensible way with very clear hypos, and a sense of humor that totally grows on you. His teachings stood out in my mind so many times during my final and honestly think I would have been in a terrible position without these cds.

Prof. Miller is widely acknowledged not only as tops in the field, but as an extremely effective teacher of the subject. Prof. Miller has perfected his teaching of this course over many years, and these recordings provide a condensed version of the course he has taught at Harvard Law School for many years.

I was lucky enough to have Prof. Miller as my Civ Pro professor - but this is your chance to hear the "highlights" of his course for yourself. Professor Miller explains it all in very clear terms, and alerts you to potential exam questions and pitfalls. Also, much of Prof. Miller's sense of humor and love for his subject comes through on these recordings -- if anyone can make you love (or at least like) this subject, it's him.

The "book description" above belongs to a different book: this hornbook is not part of the "Black Letter Series," its author is not Professor Clermont, and it doesn't come with a handy computer disk.

It is, however, an extremely helpful hornbook to have and use during your first-year course on Civil Procedure. If you're a One-L, buy this early and use it often; it'll go with pretty much whatever casebook you happen to be using (mine was Yeazell). It's extremely well-designed and its discussions are clear and sound.

If you're looking around in order to decide whether you need a hornbook at all, the answer is: yes, you probably do. There may be students who can squeeze a profitable education out of the "casebook" approach, but I'm not one of them and you probably aren't either.

During your first semester, it will be tempting to spend a lot of time briefing cases. Don't let me talk you out of doing so, or you'll be really mad at me the first time you get called on unprepared. But you'll probably be better off spending a little less time briefing and a little more time reading this hornbook first.

This is the most helpful study aid available for Civil Procedure! The text is very easy to understand and it is orgainized to follow the progression of the law school course. The authors do an excellent job of explaining the development of personal jurisdiction and subject matter jurisdiction to the present day. It also does a fine job of explaining the federal rules (and includes an index of each FRCP and where it is cited).

An excellent source for information to supplement a casebook.......2000-05-05

This is another in the long line of hornbooks from West publishing. It is an excellent source to supplement and even embellish the law of Civil Procedure contained in whichever casebook you are using. Since most Civil Procedure courses are a year long, I would strongly recommend investing in this hornbook, it is very handy to have when outlining and preparing for finals.
