The revised edition of his first book, "Square Foot Gardening" is a much better source of information on how to use his system to grow food. The reason I bought this book was that it was supposed to have much more information about growing food on a large scale. That was what I was interested in. But, if you are more interested in marketing your produce, there is some info here that would be better suited to that.

This book is probably one o the best books on market gardening tht you can possibly get. In a age when the government is telling us in Europe that we must diversify. This book provides a great insight into how to grow Niche crops for a particular market. It provides detailed information upon plants to grow and indeed offer an insight into the uses and statistics of the particular plants in question.

Airy, nothing concrete.......2005-07-30

Ugh. This book is *not* worth it. There's a lot of fluff, but almost no information you can't find hundreds of other places. It's just a mishmash of old ideas, with absolutely nothing new or concrete. It *certainly* doesn't focus on herbs, as it might seem to; it mentions them a few times in passing, mostly in only one chapter. Instead, get "Making Your Small Farm Profitable," by Ron Macher. Not only does it cover all the ground covered in this book, it does so without the fluff and feel-good-ness, and with real, concrete, actionable plans and ideas.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the Second International Rangelands Congress held in Adelaide, Australia in May 1984, and includes some 350 contributions drawn from 43 different countries. The Congress addressed the problem of the conflict between land-users and the degradation of this valuable resource. Some 40% of the Earth’s land surface is and or alpine and therefore unsuitable for agricultural cultivation. Collectively, these lands are known as rangelands and in their natural state they constitute a habitat for grazing animals, both domestic and wild. Despite their low productivity, rangelands have been used for thousands of years as a source of food and fibre, but other uses such as mining, tourism, recreation and conservation are exerting increasing demands. The result is often conflict between land-users and degradation of the resource.

Book Description

The first edition of Preparative Acetylenic Chemistry was published in 1971 as one of a series of laboratory manuals containing experimental procedures. The book was used extensively by students during practical courses and laboratory research work and enabled procedures to be carried out by persons with relatively limited bench experience. Discussions about their results have in many cases led to modified procedures or descriptions which have now been incorporated in this considerably revised and up-dated edition.

The new book contains a collection of some 250 experimental procedures on a scale of at least 0.1 molar for the preparation of a wide variety of compounds with a triple bond. A number of procedures in the old edition have been omitted and replaced by others; the subdivision and titling of the chapters and experiments have been changed; and the indexes have been replaced by a type-compound-method index. Some new and attractive methods have been included, e.g. eliminations under phase-transfer conditions and couplings under the influence of zero-valent palladium compounds. In a number of cases, additional experiments have been described in order to give a more complete picture of the scope of the concerned methods.

This collection is based on almost 30 years active bench experience by the author and all the procedures have been checked at least once in the author's laboratory. It will undoubtedly provide as much useful and practical assistance as did its predecessor.

procedures that work!.......2001-02-17

This is an excellent laboratory manual for chemistry involving alkynes. The experimental procedures have been tested and - at least in the reviewer's hands - worked very well. Several experiments are also described on large scale. The only point that I dislike (which cost this book one star) are the author's suggestion about using gas burners for heating; most institutions prohibit nowadays the use of gas burners.

This book presents in a logical and consistent way the material that every budding condensed matter theorist should know on field theory before engaging in serious research.
Within the first seven chapters, the authors derive the key results in euclidian field theory and lay the basis for further developments in renormalization theory and critical phenomena. That part of the book is almost self-contained and could serve as an alternative to the traditionally particle-physics oriented field theory course.
Chapter 8 introduces properly the core concepts of any book on the subject, namely the renormalization group and critical phenomena. Once more, every technicalities are derived and no prior acquaintance to field theory is required (unlike in books like Itzykson & Drouffe two volumes). The major techniques, such as dimensional regularization, are nicely exposed. A salient point for using this course as a first introduction to quantum field theory would be that students would have a better feeling on the true meaning of renormalization and scale invariance than if those were presented in a particle physics context.
Part II of this book exposes more specialized topics. The Coleman-Weinberg phenomenon and critical behaviour with several coupling constants are well presented. Crossover phenomena, critical phenomena in two dimensions have their respective chapters, too.
Part III begins with real space renormalization methods ; here the presentation is a bit too formal, and returning to books like the one by Nigel Goldenfeld would improve the reader's appreciation of those methods.
The book ends with some numerical recipes used in statistical field theory. Sample programs can be downloaded on a dedicated webpage.
In short, an excellent, comprehensive, highly recommended textbook and reference work.

It was very interisting but you had to pay full attention to what was going on. I like that in a book. You kept wanting to find out more and more but the plot wasn't all that great. If your the silent type i think that you should read it.

I was required to read this novel for an American Ficiton class in college. Most students would rate required reading very low just because it is required reading. Wieland has a low rating because it deserves it, not only because it was required. As an English major I love to read but Wieland tests any readers ability and patience. Brown's writing style is comparable to James Fenimore Cooper's Deerslayer - extremely descriptive and at times, without a difinitive end. The many themes that are found in the novel are outdated to today's readers and will have little if any effect on the interest of the novel. The grotesque theme of familial murder mimicks the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. If you are a Poe fan, Wieland may interest you. For those that are not Poe or Cooper fans, I would suggest looking for reading elsewhere. Wieland is time consuming and not worth the trouble.

Having to rate a book like this is no easy task. I give it four stars as a sort of average. The edition itself, with a solid introduction by Emory Eliot, is very good. The novel, like all of Brown's works, is a somewhat unsatisfying effort.

That said, let me add quickly that this novel is a must-read, without a doubt. This truly Gothic tale will keep you in suspence from start to finish--and guess what, Brown even claims a historical precedent for the narrator's brother slaughtering his wife and children. This is Real TV!

It is not a great novel (although superior to, for instance, "Edgar Huntly" and "Stephen Calvert") but it is a fascinating one. Brown was quick to jump on the bandwagon of female fiction that proved to be the bestseller in 19th century America, and this semi-epistolary tale by a female narrator is fascinating if only for the problems its form poses. For instance, its epistolary character, meant to create a sense of urgency and directness, never convinces due to its pretentious literate (read, latinate) diction and syntax. Moreover, Brown's choice of a female narrator--a man writing like a woman writing like a man--, while marketable in 1798, shows that he always bites off much more than he can chew. A much better (and earlier, 1797!) example of a female epistolary novel is Hannah W. Foster's "The Coquette," available in a wonderful edition also by the Oxford UP.

Unlike what some would have you believe, Brown is not the earliest American novelist. It is interesting to note that some of his fans claim Brown instead of Cooper, completely forgetting the books put out by female authors and read mainly by women. I might add that Brown had a male predecessor also, a namesake, William Hill Brown ("The Power of Sympathy," 1789): one shouldn't try to simplify the history of early American literature. However, to come to grips with American literature, and especially its love for the Gothic (mystery, murder, incest), "Wieland" is a great start, and this is a very good edition.
